But in questioning Elena Kagan on their obviously mutual love of fire-arms, Chuck Grassley manages to demand the recognition of such a right from God, while hilariously misquoting the Declaration of Independence. Sadly, it appears that Steve King now does all the thinking, such as it is, for Iowa’s congressional delegation.
So remember America, in the past 24 hours we’ve learned from the GOP: rape and guns are part of God’s plan — as is getting off your retirement age ass so we can keep financing awesome wars (and bank bailouts) just so we can have young soldiers come back and be homeless.
USA! (bang bang) USA! (bang bang) USA! (bang bang)

Thanks Attaturk! Grassley is regressing. Soon he will declare that God founded the USA to glorify Corporations! Citizens are here to fund corporate welfare!
125 days ’till the election, and they’re trying to hide the crazy. It’s not working.
In your guts, you know they’re nuts.
I can be just as small-minded, petty, and ridiculous as Grassley, Coburn, Sessions, and the rest of the dumbasses.
I don’t like Kagan because: She worked in the Clinton administration, Obama appointed her, she’s obviously not a liberal, and she looks like Larry Summers.
Only I wouldn’t want to say it on c-span.
This is the party that thinks it will make huge gains in November. If it does , the American people are the dumbest people on earth.
Is that a prediction…?
They elected Reagan twice and gave Bush 2 a second term (?), of course they’re the dumbest people on earth.
With cuts to education and Texas re-writing history books, they’re only going to get dumber. It’s all part of the plan.
Sure ,and they also fell for Obama’s schtick !
One of the health care welfare queens who shat on health care for all the rest. Grassley is a fecal cornucopia.
prognostication at its best
Funny. That’s the only thing I like about her. Lots of cool people worked in the Clinton Administration.
Missing Dubya
Good morning, pups. It’s Dowd and Friedman this morning. In “A Split-Screen Tale of Two Generals” MoDo is just full of questions: Can General Petraeus prove respect for the civilians? Can General Kagan prove respect for the military? It seems to be question day at the Times, because The Moustache of Wisdom is full of them too. In “The Real Palestinian Revolution” he asks a few: Checked the Al-Quds stock index lately? What about the broader changes initiated in the West Bank under the leadership of Salam Fayyad, the Palestinian prime minister?
Here they are.
The coffee and tea are ready, the cold drinks are in the fridge, and I’ve got a variety of bagels with cream cheese. I’m having one of “those weeks” at work so I’m feeling grumpy enough that I won’t inflict my mood on y’all. Have a great day.
Let’s give Americans some credit. We elected our first Black President. It may not be working out as perfectly as we had hoped but I was damn proud of America on that election night.
Good morning all.
Aussie PM an atheist.
Don’t blink or you missed it.
But, but …. Charles Grassley is a moderate Republican who is
our main hope for bipartisan agreement on health care reform.
Oh, never mind.
Or put differently, look at how awful the choices were.
Speaking of which, Elizabeth Edwards is on her tell-all tour. Gaw.
Good news of the day: Larry King is retiring.
Bad news, Katie Couric might replace him.
Although I am deeply reluctant to link to the David Weigel Memorial Latrine of Journalism,
Michale Gerson’s org*sm of bereaved concern trolling,
complete with the required pearl clutching, is a must (not) read.
Double gaw.
Combover Leon Cooperman, as ex-boss’s boss of mine, is a guest host on cnbc this morning. What a pleasure. NOT.
I really should know better, but I got out of the boat… Fellow Firepups, DON’T follow my example. Everything you need to know about what’s over there can be summed up thusly:
[shudder] I’m off to find the brain bleach.
McCrystal gets to retire with 4 stars despite fact that he hasn’t served the required 3 years at that rank: Wash Journal.
Speaking of brain bleach, Bill Bennett is the guest for 3 hours on In-Depth on cspan this weekend. How low can you go?
You rights come from your creator. This is so the govt can not take them away. Even atheists should be proud of the founders protecting our rights in this way.
Nothing rewards like suck-cess.
Matthew 22:15-21
15Then the Pharisees went out and laid plans to trap him in his words. 16They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians. “Teacher,” they said, “we know you are a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You aren’t swayed by men, because you pay no attention to who they are. 17Tell us then, what is your opinion? Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”
18But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, “You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me? 19Show me the coin used for paying the tax.” They brought him a denarius, 20and he asked them, “Whose portrait is this? And whose inscription?”
21″Caesar’s,” they replied.
Then he said to them, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”
The story of Jesus’ response to a question about taxes teaches about how Christians are to relate to government. Jesus taught to pay what we rightfully owe to the government and, by implication, obey the law of the land insofar as it does not require us to disobey God.
There is a reason why there is a separation of Church and State. Not all rights granted by the State are “God given,” nor are our politicians there to promulgates rights allegedly given to us by “God.”
Levi {Mathew} was a tax collector. He left that evil profession to follow Jesus. Taking a verse from the bible to meet your needs is not the way to go. Jesus warned about govts. He also said to obey all the laws. He did not want his followers in jail. He is not advocating taxes. He is advocating following the laws.
Well, you just proved my point that most Christians just argue from what they *want* to believe in terms of what they’ve read in the Bible.
My prior post is all directly from a Christian Bible website that my fundamentalist family refered me to in order that I would understand the Bible and the teachings of the prophets, Jesus, etc.
Yet when I quote directly from that website, you refute it and state something different.
Hence: angels can do a better dance on the head of a pin then any 2 Christians can do in terms of “interpeting” the Bible. Applying Bibilical interpretation to governmental functions is a fools errand in my opinion. I take the quote “Render unto Ceasar what is Ceasar’s” literally, rather than spinning it through my very own interpretation of it.
We could go on endlessly, but I see this kind of devolution all the time amongst some Christians, who brandish their Bibles, but come up with their own interpretations of what it means. Therein lies the rub: we all have our personal “filters,” and no matter how we try to be honest, good, moral and upright, we all come up with our very own intrepretations of what the Bible means. And then it all becomes pretty meaningless, in my opinion.
You can refute me all day long if you wish. I’m done.
What the flying fuckity fuck is Grassley even beginning to talk about?
