We’re going to be need another $33 billion for Afghanistan this year. So what’s that, another couple dozen alleged Al Qaeda to chase around and ultimately toss around missiles at?
Meanwhile, we’re getting value for our money all over that place.
Top officials in President Hamid Karzai’s government have repeatedly derailed corruption investigations of politically connected Afghans, according to U.S. officials…
Oh, and wait there’s more…
even as the United States and its allies pour money in, U.S. officials estimate that as much as $1 billion a year is flowing out as part of a massive cash exodus.
Hmmm, maybe we should pay Karzai $2 billion to encourage him to keep that billion from leaving?
Meanwhile, no extended unemployment benefits for Americans.

About Firedoglake
I am so sick and disgusted at what is happening to my country. The US has always been imperialistic, going from location to location killing innocent people for corporate profits. But we still had some money for society’s less fortunate. We have no money for unemployment benefits, no money for universal healthcare, no money for education, no money for infrastructure, no money for alternative fuel, no money to clean up the environment, no money for social security cost of living raises; instead we face impending cuts to this valuable program. But when it comes to fucking war, there is no shortage of money.
There is a reason that Afghanistan is known as the graveyard of empires. The US is already badly wounded, this will “drown it in a bathtub”.
If you drink enough Bud Light Lime, it makes perfect sense.
How much does it take? I’m not sure I could drink that much.

Good morning. Not sure either, but attitude is everything. We’re not leaving ’till we’re heaving.
lol, great answer.
R.I.P. Sen. Byrd, CSpan crawl.
I am convinced there is now a world wide strategy to prune the middle class
every single country is now “concerned about their deficit”, here in new york the “democratic” governor is cutting back services, firing people, laying off people, furlowing people and PROMISING not to raise taxes
they are hoover economists, the entire damn planet
from Naomi Klein;
“I’m talking about the heads of state who, on Sunday night, smashed social safety nets and burned good jobs in the middle of a recession. Faced with the effects of a crisis created by the world’s wealthiest and most privileged strata, they decided to stick the poorest and most vulnerable people in their countries with the bill.”

Yes, Byrd is gone. May he rest in peace.
NYT Article
Good Monday morning, pups!
yup, that’s what I’m talking about
the problem ruth, the wealthy they are talking about can’t ever use this wealth, they have more of it then they can possibly spend
it seems to me the only purpose is to acquire these assets so the masses don’t have it, in other words, simply to create a greater delta, a greater devidew between them and everyone else
they want it to be a “have, have not” society, even though it is a fact their own assets will have less value, they don’t care, all they want is a greater devide
Perris, no Panera blog yesterday?
off till later, see all on the other side of the morning
Amazing the length of service, and developed a conscience, all the more credit to him.

busy time of year for me, have not been able to post too often, I miss you

The Gulf may be God’s reply to our endless murder and subjection of his children and rape of Mother Earth.
In the end we’ll be able to say I told you so, to what end?
David Dayen here did a good analysis of the process for replacement;

We need a populist government. Period.
Our power systems could much better be run with wind and hydro-electric dams, we have a dam and generating station here that was built in 1943. Then Big Oil took over.
Good morning, pups. It’s Monday which means we’re saddled with The Pasty Little Putz and Prof. Krugman. The Pasty Little Putz says there is only “One Way Out,” and that in Afghanistan the worse things get, the longer we will be staying there. Success is the only exit strategy. So I guess we’ll be there for eternity. Putzy, honey, go read Kim. (As an aside, he was 4½ during the evacuation of Saigon…) Prof. Krugman, in “The Third Depression,” says there was the Long Depression, then the Great Depression, and now we are in the early stages of a third depression. This one is primarily a failure of policy.
Here they are.
The coffee and tea are ready, the cold drinks are in the fridge, and the biscuits are out of the oven. We finally had a break in the heat last night with some lovely rain, and the temperature dropped down to the 70s. It’s only supposed to be in the low 90s today, which will feel like spring! Have a great day.
Thanks, Marion, from your link;
Krugman;
‘It’s almost as if the financial markets understand what policy makers seemingly don’t: that while long-term fiscal responsibility is important, slashing spending in the midst of a depression, which deepens that depression and paves the way for deflation, is actually self-defeating.’
We need a serious spine implant if we are to get out these illegal occupations in Iraq and Afghanistan, a spine implant that is not forthcoming in the near future. This administration has demonstrated time and again that they have no guts, no will, no backbone and no ideas; Good at campaigning lousy at governing.
If the Oh Bummah! administration gets back to the WH in 2012 the chances of resolving the mess in Afghanistan are nil, the best we could hope for is a new president that is not beholden to the MIC and that, I am afraid, is not going to happen in my lifetime.
The jobs report is due today. I hope it’s devastating. Something needs to wake up this government. And the dems had better start laying this at the feet of the republican party. I want the meme to be that they’re willing to destroy this country for political gain.
That’s what I don’t get– this austerity policy is going to hurt the rich too, in the end. So it’s not like it’s a conspiracy to fleece the middle class, it’s just pure stupidity. Am I missing something?
Well, if you find what you’re missing, let me know cuz I don’t get it either. If our economy is based on consumerism, we’re screwed. Stores going out, resorts staying empty……a downward spiral.
I have a meeting today about the feasibility of offering early retirement and then leaving those jobs empty.
Ideology is the only reason I see for sticking with the mantra of lowering taxes on the business and rich community to create jobs and prosperity, even tho the rich are losing as much as the working class.
If the plan is to prune some layers of paper-pushing middle management, well, okay. The way it’s worked at the hospital is they add middle management to oversee the creation of new paperwork involved in freezing hiring and not replacing folks who resign or retire, thereby making more work for the drones. Of course, the question of whether or not overworked staff make more mistakes is never addressed. /snarling
Good Monday everyone. Whether one agrees or disagrees with the positions, four well researched thoughtful opinion pieces in the Times this morning, in my opinion. Not a regular occurrence for them these days. Welcome break from the constant blare of partisan whining from most of the blogosphere and mainstream opinion media.
It might be treason.
We could at least consider that as an explanation and then see if that makes any more sense.
Personally, I think it does. I think treason explains everything here that we don’t understand because it is an act of war. The leaders of a country declaring ‘war’ on their own country has to be treason, what else can it be?
Pure stupidity?
Some people will say that (to cover their butt?), but I think this is way too well organized to be the product of stupidity.
Reactionaries have always been pocketbook patriots, loyal in the end only to their own purse.
There are a hundred Al Qaeda in Afghanistan! I am scared and shocked!
There are so many consequences of two illegal wars and “drone” attacks against anyone anywhere anytime by cowardly neo-con war criminals. It is necessary to have a police state. Six year old children can be designated terrorists for no reason by the Gestapo Homeland Security.
Of course the “Underwear Bomber” had known ties to terrorism and was escorted through security by an Al Qaeda handler. These wars are all LIES. Obama and Bush and the rest of the neo-cons are giving us fascism for billionaires to make war profits.
Swim is up top…
Yossarian lives!
The rich must burn something to stay warm!
