As always, the right remains a paragon of class.
Speak no ill of the dead? Well, let me simply say that the racist, populist, larcenous bigot of a Senator – a man who robbed the American tax-payer to pave his state with baubles and bribes – is not going to be much mourned in these parts.
Off to that great Klavern in the sky. Well “in the sky” might be a little too optimistic.
As the encomia mount like rotting, fly-buzzed piles of the pork-barrel spending he so systematically shoveled back to his West Virginia home, let’s not forget the late Sen. Robert Byrd’s most undeniable legacy: Undermining belief in politicians as little more than self-serving glad-handers on the hunt for more and more taxpayer money for their constituents.
Let’s just be fair. If an association with a Democrat terror outfit is an obvious disqualifier for one, it should be for everyone.
The man should have retired decades ago, along with the hatred with which he represented.
…keep a list of hagiographers in the press who don’t mention Byrd’s Klan connection.
Before his death early this morning at the age of 92, I placed the legendary West Virginia Senator Robert Byrd in the category of “only the wrong survive” along with Fidel Castro and Pete Seeger.
He just became the best kind of Democrat, joining the sainted ranks of those who can no longer demagogue and pander their way to power, who no longer tax honest people into poverty so that their less industrious neighbors can be bribed with “free” government giveaways, and about whom even Republicans feel compelled to say nice things.
If this post seems familiar, it’s because these assholes ran the exactly the same playbook against Ted Kennedy.

I would expect nothing less from this coterie of hacks, thieves, criminals and liars. (Yes, I sugar-coated my sentiments.)
Pete Seeger? WTF?
DFH.
These folks need to hear about the Bridge to Nowhere. But I don’t suppose it would do any good. I wonder if working for the people in your state is worse than picking up men in restrooms, going to Argentina to meet your lover, refusing to fund programs so that people out of work can feed their families, etc.? It goes on and on.
Yeah, ’cause OMG in the 30s he was a Commie!
Nothing like cut & paste
Conservatives are always so KKKlassy.
Re: the Klan connection: how come “youthful” mistakes are easily dismissed as irrelevant or “ancient history” for Repubs (oh, I know IOKIYAR), but the fact that Byrd repeatedly described his regrets for having joined the Klan and spoke out against it on many, many occasions, mean nothing for a Democrat? I heard one of those occasions this morning, on Terri Gross’s replay of a 2004 interview with the Sen. He could hardly have repudiated the Klan more directly.
And, of course, once upon a time, “bringing home the bacon” for your constituents was accounted a good thing in a politician. Let’s not forget, either, that Byrd’s constituents were among the poorest in the nation.
Let he who is without Strom Thurmond cast the first stone.
Robert Byrd was a product of his times. Heck, he was even born before women had the right to vote in this country. None of the above quoted commentators and pundits have even that lame excuse for their prejudices.
And I would wager that the folks at Powertools who trash Pete Seeger sing songs like This Land Is Your Land (Woody Guthrie – Pete Seeger’s friend), and If I Had a Hammer without any sense of irony whatsoever.
Of course! Remember McPalin co-opted Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the USA” without irony, (or permission). What conservatives hear is
“Blah blah blah blah blah,
Blah bla-bla blah blah blah
Blah blah blah blah blah
Ba-blah blah blah blah blah blah
Born in the USA
I was born in the USA
Born in the USA
Blah blah blah blah USA….”
It’s hard to understand the right’s ill-will toward Byrd.
Weren’t they against civil rights and for states rights at the same time that Byrd held these views?
Sure, Byrd understood the value of pork-barrel politics, but the right-wingers never hold that against Republicans.
Byrd has supported all the right’s military adventures over the years, with only one exception (and his objection to the Irag war seemed to be more about Congress giving up it’s war powers, not the merits of war itself).
I guess they are really mad at him for not following Strom Thurmond’s example and switching parties 40 years ago.
(St Ronnie of Ray-gunz tried to use that song first while being clueless of what it was saying for the same reason and got roundly smacked by the Boss for doing so)
Part of the reason for the hatred, beyond their usual ignorance and general hatred for anyone with “D” after their name, can be found in the clip at BT’s earlier post today. And his similar response to the Patriot Act.
Or you might just say, their hatred of the fact that he really knew and understood the Constitution, and tended to use that knowledge well against them.
Whatever his flaws, I’ve never heard/read a speech of his on Constitutional issues with which I found any disagreement.
Lovely people. Massachusetts led the way in trashing the Kennedy legacy.
What a laugh, were this not so Rovian and intentionally destructive of the language of public discourse. Equating Sen. Byrd with Castro or Seeger (neither of those two belong together) is like calling the corporatist Mr. Obama a socialist.
The Right seems unable to describe anyone except in terms that apply to themselves (a tactic, actually, that Rove perfected): racist, populist, larcenous, self-serving gladhanders, and political hatemongers.
Maybe a Palin presidential run would be worth it…just to see the expressions of utter disbelief when she starts playing “American Woman” at her rallies.
Hell, even Ron Paul brings home pork.
They all do it. Wish some would come our way. We’re drowning.
Yep, one warmongering conservative after another has tried to steal that piece without the vaguest idea of what it says. If “War Pigs” had “USA” in it, Ozzie would have similar problems as Bruce.
Ah, yes, anoth IOKIYAR moment, so early in the morning, too. I thought they liked the sinners who repent?
John McCain is Holier-Than-Thou and doesn’t bring home diddlysquat.
No, you’re thinking of that rabbi guy.
KKKlassy?
Here?
I rather liked those quotes. And they seemed appropriate.
Why no railing from the right about Palin’s hubby’s involvement in the Alaska Independence Party and her delivering a speech to a gathering? How anti-American can you get?
Scroll, baby, scroll…
Watched and listened on the Senate floor when Senator Byrd cast his no vote against the Iraq war resolution. Cried. The man could reach down deep pull out the words and thoughts like no one else.
Was also there on the Senate floor when he voted against the Patriot Act. Slammed that pile of papers (legislation) down on the desk next to him.
He also had the ability to admit that how he had voted on Civil rights issues was really really wrong.
Senator Robert Byrd was and will continue to be an inspiratio!
Too bad that Andrew, Glenn are not able to see a few of his good qualities at least hold back their anger for a few days.
I imagine that the Rs in the Senate will be much more careful. This trashing of Byrd could backfire badly for them.
Yes, but you can bet that they are not singing the last two verses of This Land is Your Land
Signs
Glad to see when trolls admit their true selves when they openly agree with hateful, devisive, self-centered, ill-timed, bullshit remarks.
Good for you.
Admitting the problem. It’s the first step to a cure.
Good luck.
This goes way back to the late fifties and early sixties. Back then there were yet to be hippies, so you couldn’t “punch a hippie”. Back then, the tactic was to “punch a folksinger”.
Curses on thee. I’ve had that song stuck in my head for a couple of days. And now this!
In 1971 I was told by a music producer that “Signs” was the greatest song ever written, so I should immediately write songs just like that.
1971 wasn’t the greatest year…
These assholes (or ones like them) ran the same playbook after the assassinations of JFK, MLK, and RFK.
You mean like how it’s OK for Sullivan to favorably cite the debunked and deeply racist book The Bell Curve and no Villager ever calls him on it, much less calls for his being banned from public life?
Or how it’s OK for Bob Barr, a member of the Council of Conservative Citizens (the modern-way version of the White Citizens Councils and Sovereignty Commissions of the past century — the racist groups run by the South’s powerful classes, as opposed to the Klan which got mainly the poor white folks with whom the CoCC types wouldn’t associate) to call airport security personnel the N-word and slap them around as he did a couple years ago?
You might enjoy Diane McWhorter’s book Carry Me Home She may cover an era a few years earlier than you reference. Before Civil Rights laws were being debated many of the civic leaders were KKK. It is my understanding and experience that as you recount they ran quickly away and into the GOP and into the various “Southern Heritage” associations, leaving the KKK to the angry uneducated.
“Let’s not forget, either, that Byrd’s constituents were among the poorest in the nation.”
Ah yes, let us not forget that Byrd did the unforgiveable by bringing home projects/pork/whatever to his constituents who happened to be poor. THAT, my friend, is but one of many of Byrd’s very unforgiveable sins as determined by RepubliKKKans.
Most RepubliKKKans are also probably pissed off that Byrd recanted on his infamous filibuster of the Civil Rights Act – which he endlessly apologized for over the years. No doubt the RepubliKKKans really hate Byrd for that traitorous action.
Yech… typical comments from the usual suspects, and nothing more or less than I would expect from that nasty crowd.
I do “enjoy” the comparison to both Pete Seeger and Fidel… Pete would be so proud. LOL… what a bunch of pishers.
Well, at least the right-wing commentators are being consistent, having also trashed W.F. Buckley on his death for his past but renounced racism, to wit (Nat. Rev. 1957):
Oh wait, never mind.
This isn’t exactly a trashing of Byrd, but it certainly is astonishingly crass and self-absorbed on the very day of the man’s passing.
Steve Forbes tweets:
There are a lot of people walking around lately who have no idea what to say, or how to be silent in that case.
Loved Chris Matthews’ freudian slip on “Hardball” today…when speculating on Senator Byrd’s replacement and President Obama’s Senate majority, he referred to “Carter’s” majority.
Priceless…simply priceless.
Crass? You betcha.
Especially Matthews’ horror and recovery when he realized the implications…
The Democratic Gov’s WV Secy of State has announced the Gov will appoint a replacement for Sen. Robt Byrd to serve until a special election in Nov. 2012.
Forbes thinking that the death changed anything is the usual lack of logic on the right.
Slime – all.
I guess Carter tickled Tweetie’s leg also.
Wow, who can really say that they are surprised that a bunch of hateful and ignorant mouth-breathers are saying stuff like this? This is all a part of their typical game. You wrongly accuse and criticize others of doing and saying really horrible, nasty things so that when you turn around and say and do the very same things, no one will be pick up on the irony or hypocrisy inherent in your hatred. These are the same mouth-breathing pond scum who were bitching and moaning about libruls being happy that Dick Cheney was in the hospital…Dick Cheney…who in the world can defend Dick Cheney?
They still are, and he changed his mind. Therein lies his sin.
We live in a land of fools
Really no more than that
They eat their handlers shit for lunch
Their fatted nipples hard with lust
grease covered lips
and K wide asses
Ready for thy masters thrusts
While we in wide eyed awe
Listen to Pete Seegers’s saw
That is shit
This is shinola
Eh Hosers
Look, I trashed Reagan, Nixon, Russert and Ford when they died, and the next time I hear some asshole Republican being lionized when they die, I’ll do it again. So I have absolutely no objection to exposure of this man’s warts as he is being prepared to lie in state in the capitol building.
If I were to be eulogized, it would be fine with me if the speaker just told it like it was. I’m not proud of everything, but it has been my life and I sure as hell wouldn’t want anybody tryin’ to make me out as some kind of plaster saint.
Having said that, there is plenty I could criticize Byrd for – but not for the KKK. In my mind, if you do wrong, believing it to be right, but later realize your error, confess it publicly, make amends as best you can and never do that kind of thing again, having learned from your mistake, then you have only proved yourself human – and ethical.
I’ll leave it to others to decide whether Byrd (or myself) met all those criteria, but having said all that, at least what I said about Nixon, etc. was accurate and unembellished by snide, tasteless smears like some of those comments listed above. Those jerks will deserve everything nasty said about them when they go. Hope I’m there to piss on their graves.
PS: That last sentence is not to be taken literally. I wouldn’t waste the time.
Geez, who would stoop so low as to do such a thing?
http://firedoglake.com/2010/01/11/senate-majority-leader-was-affiliated-with-white-supremacist-group/
After all, all Robert Byrd did was form his own chapter of the KKK, and personally recruit it’s 150 members.
This kinda reminds me of the work of Stan Greenberg’s firm in “greenwashing” and “rebranding” BP. Of course, he’s suffered a temporary setback there.
But, it sure looks like Byrd’s being furiously scrubbed, eh?
No. Repubs actually were pushing for civil rights. I suggest you learn more history.
This guy was a high ranking Klansman and was still using the N-word as recently as 5 years ago. The only reason you defend him is because he is a Democrat. Give me a break. Robert KKK Byrd was an evil little man and I am HAPPY to dance on his warm grave.
This is a myth. Most racist Dixiecrats did not switch to the GOP. Strom Thurmond was a rare exception. Most Dixiecrats remained in the Democratic party until they were swept from power by the GOP when they became the dominant party in the South, as the Democratic party drifted ever more leftward.
