Today, Afghanistan and foreign affairs dominate all the lineups for Talking Heads. No surprise in light of McChrystal’s dismissal.

About Firedoglake
If it’s Sunday, it must be McCain Day! (Benen is keeping track)
Good morning, Firepups. Woke up 5:45 a.m., hungry, couldn’t go back to sleep, so my Sunday is off to an early start. Lots to do, though. Have a good one, everyone.
Good morning, pups. It’s Dowd, Friedman, Kristof and Rich today. MoDo is in San Francisco and has a question: “Are Cells the New Cigarettes?” She tells us how Gavin Newsom, San Francisco’s iPhone-loving mayor, takes on potential cellphone dangers. The Moustache of Wisdom, in “War, Timeout, War, Time…,” says the time is right for Israel to take the diplomatic initiative. The time is also right for rainbows and sparkly unicorns… Mr. Kristof addresses a different danger in cell phones. In “Death by Gadget” he asks a question: Do we really want our cellphones and laptops to fuel a particularly brutal war in Congo? Mr. Rich, in “The 36 Hours That Shook Washington,” says that for President Obama, there are lessons to be learned in the McChrystal debacle.
Here they are.
The coffee and tea are ready, and the cold drinks are in the fridge. For breakfast I’ve got caramel croissant pudding. Decadent and dessert-like, but sometimes I just crave something like it. After about 3 weeks of almost no work my private client has flooded me, so I’m off to apply my nose to the grindstone. Have a great day.
thanks, Elliott, now listening to Tweetie’s panel all crediting Petraeus with the strategy they all like, that we’re losing with in Afghanistan.
OT, but not really….all week, Glenzilla has been arguing over the notion that Obama is helpless in the face of Congressional stonewalling and intransigence. He makes a very compelling case that Obama can get stuff he cares about done if he pushes, and links to a bunch of the discussion. It is an interesting read, including a Lichtblau article in the NYT about WH staff meeting with lobbyists across the street and away from requirements for disclosure in this “transparent” administration.

If you haven’t, go read all of the discussion.
I’ve always felt he didn’t make use of the bully pulpit.
Good morning all.
The discussion among Glenn and other columnists/bloggers has been fascinating. Obama gets done what he cares about, other times pays lip service while doing back room deals or letting things slide.
He is far from ALL bad, but I am truly disappointed in him and our government (yeah, I know, get in line and take a number).
It does my heart good to see president McCain back on the television circuit.
I can never see, or even think about Mccrazy, without seeing the picture that Christy posted….he was wearing a purple hat that may have been pointed. Wow, it may be in the Archives. And Palin had a big spot on the Matthews show this morning…what gifts.
MSNBC has changed it’s website just slightly. The design at the top is different but I bring it up because Tweety no longer has his own tab on top but Rachel does. Unfortunately Meet the Press still has it’s own tab. When are they going to realize that Gregory is never going to be any good?
morning everyone, can’t stay long but I can make a suggestion for the fundraiser
twolf is one excellant artist, the photo in the lead is given credit to him too
I am thinking limited edition litho’s will make a great gift for x amount of contribution, signed by twolf, etc
we can do that with all of the talent here at the lake, for instance anything signed by jane, marcy and all of the authors here, stuff like that
I had mentioned this to jane a while ago and she really liked the idea but it hasn’t been done yet
There’s a heart-wrenching program on cspan2 about how abysmal childcare possibilities are in the U.S. compared to every other rich, and many poor, countries. We all know that, but it hurts to hear it detailed.
Wonderful idea, perris.
Blogging your breakfast this morning? Haven’t “seen” you around much recently,
The heartless Republicans have made sure that we rank right up there with most developing countries and dictatorships when it comes to social structure and the spineless Democrats have abetted them. We can debate possible differences in motive but we can hardly debate that the result is the same, no matter which party is in charge. Personally I believe that the Democrats are just as corrupted and beholden to wealth as the Republicans. Nothing else explains why a bare Republican majority could push through any legislation it wanted while a robust Democratic majority must kowtow to them to get the most weak and watered down legislation through, if that.
So true.
Good morning, everyone.
One thing the program reminds me of is how far down the list so many social priorities have moved & how denigrated they are in U.S. society.
Besides the stats (the majority of the U.S. workforce is now female), here’s the worst story: Mother of quads worked the nightshift. She had some sort of sponsored (govt or union, I can’t remember which) during their first year. After that, her mother was able to watch them overnight, before going off to her job in the morning when the mother came home. Then the mother went to sleep, with the less than 2-year old quads in another room watching TV. No disasters happened, but geez.
The Republican mantra: “We’ll take care of you from conception to birth. After that…you’re on your own”
Hat tip to Jon Stewart
It’s not just the Rs or the anti-choice people. It’s the whole society.
I’m off. Be well.
Morning everybody
re: McCain
That part really got me too
I’m aware. I did say that I believed it wasn’t just the Republicans…
if only they’d think a little harder.
Lindsay Graham (Fox) wants the civilian side of our war government to go along with the military
Replace Eikenberry and Holbrooke – Graham
Gotta go get a Sunday paper to look for non existent jobs. Laters.
Feinstein – President should listen to Petreus – put all our eggs in Petreus basket
Bye Margaret!
thanks msmolly
Graham – Kagan a liberal activst
Not a strong proponent of civilian control, is he? For some reason the Constitution only matters to these people when it suits them. All other times it’s hopelessly out of date. And the intrepid media acts like that’s a reasonable position to have.
lol I remember the party pic of McCain – a classic
it’s scary
I like the way you think perris, what no Panera breakfast this morning, or are you eating at Marion’s?
thanks eCAHN — did you have difficulty finding childcare for your son?
watched the debate on requiring identification of source of campaign funds yesterday, the wingnuts were all about how unconstitutional the idea was that we would know who was telling us to support/oppose candidates. Funny, they started all those wars without any constitutional authority.
The Republicans are coming out strong for changing “the civilian leadership” and ditching the timeline for Afghanistan.
Liz Cheney – Obama’s economic policies close to being a threat to our security
The John MacSame Hour!!!with your guest David Gregory!
