Thursday morning, I logged onto my computer and saw reports that Israel was letting a few extra goodies go through the Gaza blockade. Having heard such stories before, and knowing that what is really happening is that while certain items are temporarily allowed still others are added to the list of forbidden things, I didn’t think too much of it other than to assume it was bogus.
Little did I know just how bogus it really was.
Siun, one of my fellow writers in the FDL orbit, discovered that while the office of Israeli prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu had released a press release in English claiming that an agreement was reached at a security cabinet meeting that would allow for easing the Israeli blockade of Gaza, the Hebrew version of that same press release did not mention any such plan to lift the blockade — and Bibi’s office, when pressed, admitted that no such agreement was reached!
And yet, outside of FDL and the little tidbit Siun found buried deep in a Ha’aretz article, this is all but unknown. Google “gaza blockade” even now, and the traditional corporate media sources are all still saying that an agreement to partially lift the blockade was reached.
Meanwhile, as Siun was discovering the lede that was buried in an Israeli newspaper most Americans will never see, Bmaz, who normally is seen acting out the part of the crusty curmudgeon talking sports and law trash with Emptywheel and friends, was documenting the closing arguments of the Prop 8 trial with Emptywheel and Teddy Partridge, sending out quick texts filled with verve and information, and providing an educated and informed viewpoint that no other news outlet had to offer.
I think these folks should take a bow. They went above and beyond the call of duty this week.
If you like what FDL’s writers are doing, and you can spare the coin, please feel free to send a little money to help keep the ball, and the journalism, rolling. You are the wind beneath FDL’s wings — it wouldn’t be here without you. Thanks!

About Firedoglake
‘Morning, everyone! Coffee’s over on the counter by the fridge. Hope you don’t mind Splenda!
I lurvs me some Splenda. What I use.
Thanks for this Phoenix Woman. Yes, the FDL crew, including YOU deserve huge kudos and even a standing ovation.
Done. Morning, PW. It’s gorgeous here – 78 degrees at Chez Siberia.
Already 85 here. Gonna be another steam bath today.
Hey there, Toby. Is your shoulder feeling better?
I get more bang for the buck at the Lake than I ever did with cable teebee.
Here’s some local honey for those who can indulge. Sorry, but the substitutes gimme the heebie jeebies.
Yep. Global warming? Wazzat?
Hey, SD. I’m getting excited about watching my Gators tonight in the College World Series.
Ever try stevia or blue agave nectar?
ooo, it’s on da radio. After last night I need a break from da Rays.
Well, the PT is going well. I’m up to 125 degrees from 105 when I started last week. But I have to say that I’m aching this morning -
Mornin’ P-dub !
look back at FDL’s earliest reporting on this Corpflagration in the Gulf – ie, gusher rates, dispersant chemicals and worker safety – and look at what everyone else is just now getting around to reporting
mosey on over and read all the incredibly informative FDL reportage on the Cat Food Commission – and then name me another multi-issue site even talking about it
and frankly, I get verklempt thinking about the sterling Prop 8 coverage – imagine a live blog of Brown v Board of Education
my, my, my . . . the little blog that could
No, but they both sound interesting. Have to go the natural food store today and will look for them. Lurvs me some honey, though.
I was in the same boat wrt substitutes – bad chemicals and even worse taste dot dot dot but Splenda isn’t bad at all – been using it in baking for some time now
(((Toby)))
Keep reminding yourself that the pain now is a gain forever
I like that image, and I’m so proud to be a firepup.
Way OT – my friend Janis and hubby (live in CA) bought a new digital camera and asked if I’d like their old one. Canon Powershot A 620. She said I needed more pix of da tigers on Caturday. Lurv gettin’ presents in da mail.
Honey’s OK. Single-source honey is delicious!
Thanks for the coffee PW, no Splenda or honey for me though, I take it black ; )
Thanks so much, PW. Siun’s work is a fabulous example of why progressives have to create and sustain the space to speak, because the institutional pressures not to print these kinds of things are absolutely horrendous. And because the media is so easily manipulated, Bibi feels free to engage in bs activity without fear of ever being called on it.
Well, Siun called him out.
And because it happens here, more people become aware of the fact that bigger outlets are letting it slide. It has a ripple effect.
Thanks to everyone for all their support, in whatever form — donations, comments, diaries, spreading the word, or just reading. We all do what we do together.
There’s a beekeeper at our Farmer’s Market on Tuesdays. BIG jars of honey for little dust. Iz wunnerful.
Oh, excellent! You’ll like the A620 — much less of a battery hog than its predecessors, though you should still take out the batteries if you won’t be using it for more than 24 hours.
That’s a very good camera SD! Can’t beat presents in the mail.
Bibi. *hand in mouth* mumpgh erggg mumpgh
Exactly.
I mentioned Siun and our Prop 8 gang because they were the ones who came most readily to mind — other exclusive-to-FDL stuff was happening last week but I just didn’t think of it all in time to mention it. (Besides, it would have made for a monster post.)
ooo, thanks for that tidbit. She’s sending 4 rechargeables with it.
Quick, think of fluffy tigers!
I’m still waiting for the event organizer to put up the slides shown at the oil gusher forum last Tuesday. Diary without ‘em ain’t cuttin’ it.
Spot on! This is how the narrative becomes the “reality” for all intents and purposes. Except of course for those people who know what the reality really is and are suffering because of it. Well done.
LOL…
No problem! I like Canons a lot. The older ones tended to need lots of batteries, and to have rather fragile plastic housing (they often don’t survive falls of more than three feet unless it’s onto carpet), but the newer ones improved in both these areas.
Man, I was looking at our BP page and the list of posts, and I was completely knocked out:
http://firedoglake.com/bp-oil-disaster/archive/
In addition to FDL writers, the Seminal posts by people like Spocko, Rick Steiner, Robert Weismann, Josh Nelson, Seymour Friendly, Mary McCurnin, Tony Collings — just amazing.
Scarecrow beat the main stream media by a week on what caused the collapse. He was the first to report on the plumes, and cited by Keith Olbermann for doing so. Mike Whitney went down to the gulf, reported on the fishermen and the lack of respirators, something nobody else was doing. He kept pushing and pushing, members of Congress started making statements, and now they’re having hearings next week that the White House very much did not want to have.
And Dave Dayen — well, what can you say. He’s a machine. The joke is that nobody has ever seen all three of him in one room.
If anyone hasn’t seen the page, take a look. It’s an incredible body of work, and I can say it, having had almost nothing to do with it.
fabu, fabu !!! can already hear the tigers – enough already dad !!
I already know they don’t like the flash. Used a borrowed camera couple times.
We need to give the WH even more things they don’t want or like.
haven’t even mentioned FDL Book Salon – again and again waaaay ahead of the curve:
look at all the TradMed ink C Street has received this year – and recall Siun turning us on to Jeff Sharlett’s book 2 freakin’ years ago -
just now on FB, someone was touting Andrew Bacevich – also a FDL Book Salon featured author – with Chris Hedges moderating for goodness sakes
dig it Hamsher ! You’re Charles Foster Jane :D
I’m frankly humbled by being around so many smart, hardworking, prinicpled and flat-out brave human beings.
Well, that’s what the PT explained. He said that with shoulder injuries, what the therapy is actually doing is causing little stretches and tears in the capsule, muscles, tendons, etc. which the body then rushes around to repair. The alternative (ie, doing nothing) is too painful and disgusting for a family site such as FDL to even discuss.
Hi, guys. I’m in a tight spot and details are here. Suffice it say I wouldn’t be making a public appeal unless it was absolutely necessary. Any help, however small, would be appreciated. In fact, I’m even thinking of taking a job cleaning up the oil spill on the Gulf Coast (Mrs. JP thinks it would be an invaluable opportunity to blog about it).
Oh, no!
I’m still waiting for my merit badge, though.
a little Central Texas mystery – mid week wave of local folks talking about going down to Gulf for clean up work – tried to track down source – when I reached the likely local guy and asked as to the identity of contractor, I got a “what contractor ?” “what flyer ?” curiouser and curiouser
I went searching for Girl Scout Badges to send you a virtually cute one, but their sites suck. I was a scout back when but couldn’t stand the militaristic BS. Sorry, hon. You don’t want one of their badges, and if I had tons of Saturday morning time, I could prolly figure out how to make one for you, but, yard and house work await.
How ’bout a big old hug? Okay, a very gentle one, avoiding the shoulder that hurts.
(((gentle hug)))
Innnn-ter-est-ing. Do you have a copy, and can you scan it?
Speaking of Prop 8 am I the only person on the planet who had not seen this about the judge in the case?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaughn_R._Walker
I am astonished that it isn’t mentioned more prominently in the MSM.
