Republican U.S. Senate candidate Rep. Mark Kirk did not tell the whole story about how he found out his bio had misidentified him as having won a Navy “Intelligence Officer of the Year” award. It turns out the Navy tipped off Kirk’s House staff that news outlets were asking questions about his military record.
Last week, Kirk, a commander in the Naval Reserves, said his staff called the false claim to his attention as if they discovered it themselves. What actually happened was that after his staff got the heads-up from the Navy, Kirk’s team scrambled a damage-control operation, putting a statement on his website correcting the record before a story came out.
But…but…Blumenthal!1!!

About Firedoglake
As though receving any kind of award from the “military” is something to be proud of.
When is Memorial Day for America’s drone victims?
Condoning these slaughters by our Joystick President makes us all war criminals.
She’s absolutely correct. After a mini media firestorm over Blumenthal, (in which it turned out the narrative was at least partially manufactured by the NYT), she has been the only traditional media figure I’ve noticed even mention Mark Kirk’s far more egregious lies. People who pad their service records are annoying but quite common. Let’s start with W, who often spoke of the lessons he learned “during the Vietnam war”, (while he was flying for the Texas National Guard’s 147th Interceptor Group and not flying for the Alabama Guard)
Hey, I’m proud of my awards, both personal and unit citations. On the other hand, I was just an airframe mechanic.
Tragic Manicheanism
Good morning, pups. Loved Rachel’s show last night.
Did you know that CNN ran 11 segments on Blumenthal, NONE on Kirk! Our liberal media, my arse.
Media Matters
BTW their new “Political Correction” is great!
I won “Daily Kos Blogger of the Year” and The Nobel Peace Prize.
While Campbell Brown continued to whine that CNN is the only unbiased cable news channel. What a joke.
Indeed.
Kirk may have actually won that Rufus Taylor Award (not that it’s the same award he claimed). He may have worked the system, a good way to get ahead in this world, but not a good way to gel with one’s unit in a team effort.
Um, I wouldn’t brag about either of those, if I were you. Better to hide them under a bushel basket. *g*
OK. Coffee & dn headlines are over. I’m off. Be good.
and as it turns out, Kirk didn’t command the squadron that took over command of the Attack Wing as he claims. He was in 209 and the unit that took over was the 140.
You should write a diary on that point. That is an important point.
My unit won two awards when I was in the Navy, the Battle E and the unit maintenance award. What I mainly remember about them is that both times Bill Green came downstairs with a box and handed everybody a ribbon. They were probably mentioned during quarters at one point or another but I was either on night shift at the time or wasn’t paying attention during quarters. Unit citations were cool looking and all but no big deal. At least not for me.
MSNBC may be the best of the bunch, but that’s not saying much. Go read about Glenzilla’s interview with Eliot Spitzer (sitting in for Ratigan) yesterday:
Talking about Israel with Eliot Spitzer on MSNBC
I try to stay out of discussions about Israel/Pakistan, because I don’t feel well informed enough to have an opinion, but that completely one-sided broadcast is disgusting.
Why isn’t the story about the false award, rather than “his staff called the claim to his attention as if they discovered it themselves. What actually happened was that his staff got the heads-up from the Navy”
Let us not forget the choleric hysteria of Tweety re Blumenthal. Haven’t heard him say boo about Kirk. Or the chronicle of politicians over at Josh’s place.
Nope, Tweety’s too busy shooting off his mouth about Obama’s Iranian hostage crisis time. Spiraling into the cosmos on MoJo even as I type.
Tweety: loose cannon? journalistic malpractice?
I recount, you decide.
What kind of aircraft, if I may ask?
What did VAQ 140 fly? EA-6B’s?
F-14As
Yeah, I’ve no doubt Tweety was hyperventilating and clutching his pearls. I can’t stomach him though so I’ll have to take your word for it.
Great plane. Friend of mine was a flight test engineer on them at Grumman.
IOKIYAR
I think I will wear that on a t-shirt.
Although, a list of the R accusations about Dems with the R actions that are equal infractions would make it more wonderful to wear.
Blumenthal is the replacement corportist for Blanche Lincoln.
I served with a British Thermal Unit in Viet Nam. Honest.
Mark Kirk has another little problem. watch that ad that Maddow shows a piece of. In the service related photos that come up on the screen while extolling Kirk’s service record, they show an FA-18, not an EA-6B. To the best of my knowledge, no FA-18 has been outfitted for recon. They aren’t big enough to carry a TARPS pod for example. My knowledge about it is twenty years old so I could be wrong but the aircraft shown was the single seat fighter version, not the larger super 18 that can be used for training and so forth. Picking nits maybe but salient to the conversation. More subtle war record padding? I’m just pointing out.
Piece of crap maintenance wise, at least until the tough wing mod and that didn’t address the mass of hydraulic leaks. I’m sure engineers thought it was just peachy though. For example, why put the four way valve under the most complicated piece of machinery on board when, with an electric servo, they could have put it somewhere more accessible? Why not move the starboard pressure valve outboard two inches so it was a 15 minute job like the port side valve, rather than the six hours it took to change it out?
Bet you take a lot of heat for that.
UGH! On those very punny notes, I should probably try to get my walk in before the rain comes. Later pups. :-)
Mornin’, BT, pups
I’ve got a bunch of those unit citations/commendations. All of ‘em an’ 4 bucks will get me a mocha frappe at Mickey D’s. Yuk.
Campbell Brown: Same media phony that once had a show that boasted “no bull, no bias.” What a laugh. To no one’s surprise she eventually took that phrase down, must have been too big of a lie even for CNN.
Engineers put stuff where it fits best with regards to size, weight, and CG. Historically, maintainence is generally not high on the list of considerations. With the newer planes, however, that is changing.
Exactly. Like I said, Bill Green came down with a box of ribbons and handed them out. Whoopee!
I’m hip.
Right? Does FAUX “News” even still use the “fair and balanced” meme?
Shit, half the time nobody could remember the action we got commended for. Look good on the ribbon bars though.
Right? To this day I have no clue how or why we won the Battle E. It was a reserve award though, maybe it was just our turn…
IIRC the Battle E was awarded for passing an operational inspection. CO’s of destroyers particularly cherished them. Big white E on the wings of the bridge.
I probably wasn’t even there when the inspection happened then, though I remember getting ready for a big CAG inspection. I was a third class petty officer then and I re-painted all of the stripes on the deck and re-painted all of the tool silhouettes in the boxes one night. Woohoo for winning a painting ribbon!
No walking for me today! Already raining. :-(
Off to swim in the great capitalist cesspool.
Keep the Zionist trolls and apologists back on their heels today.
US KIA Irak: 4,400
US KIA Afghanistan: 1,087
Iraki and Afghan casualties: estimates vary to over 1.5M
US MBS 2010: 18,848 and counting
Be good to yourselves, and all other living things.
Namaste
Navy did have the best paint in the world, though. *g*
Anybody hear Maddow mention the murders committed by Israel?
I didn’t and I don’t think I will.
As for one of her frequent guests during the health care sham, Anthony Weiner is an Israeli tool and has exactly zero credibility with me, same for Spitzer.
it’s STILL not a Naval Award
My Grandfather EARNED a bronze star and a purple heart
AND WE HAVE THE CITATION LETTERS TO PROVE IT
these awards were issued by the United States Army
there is NO WAY to mistake a phony award from a podunk lobbyist-dick polisher outfit for an award given by THE UNITED STATES NAVY
there is just no way to make that mistake
Naval Awards are given out by Naval Officers, usually in front of a crowd
podunk lobbyist-dick polisher awards are NOT given out by Naval Officers
there is a really BIG difference
I caught the closing of something that may have been about the piracy on her show last night, but I have no idea what spin was put on it.
…Another one of Maddow’s frequent guests is Barney Frank, who’s called it like he saw it w/regard to the Israeli attack. Even Hamsher gave him kudos for doing so. It’s not a syllogism to say that because Maddow features American Jews in congress commenting on issues of the day, that , 1: they are all in agreement in their support of Israel, or 2: that she shares such a bias. I just don’t see that bias in her.
