In the lead-up to Israel’s attack on the “Free Gaza” flotilla that left at least nine dead and dozens more wounded, Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon claimed that the basic supplies being brought by the more than 600 pro-Palestinian activists–medicine, wheelchairs, construction material–were simply not needed, as “there is no humanitarian crisis in Gaza,” a phrase repeated ad nauseam by Israeli press officials. The mission was not a humanitarian one, Ayalon said, but rather “a provocation intended to delegitimize Israel.”
The statement ignored, as it must, the reality on the ground. According to a spokesman for the UN relief agency in occupied Palestine, “There is a severe humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip,” which is to be expected when 1.5 million people are held in a de facto prison, barred from traveling to and trading with the outside world, forbidden the privilege of a functioning economy and faced with severe bombing whenever a car backfires in southern Israel.
But it’s one thing for reality and evidence to contradict state propaganda. That’s the case more often than not. How about when propaganda explicitly contradicts itself?
IDF spokesman Col. Moshe Levi–not one of Israel’s better propagandists, though I’ll concede he has a tough job–proclaimed Tuesday that Israeli soldiers had “been working non-stop for the last 24 hours examining the cargo holds of the three large cargo ships, and I can say with great assurance that none of the equipment on board is needed in Gaza.
“The equipment that we found is all equipment that we have regularly allowed into the strip over the past year,” Levi continued. “This proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that the whole premise of the voyage was for propaganda and provocation and not for humanitarian purposes.”
To debunk this claim, forget for a moment the reality-based assertions of the bleating UN and those butter knife-wielding former diplomats and Nobel laureates on the “Free Gaza” boats. Let’s turn to IDF spokesman Col. Moshe Levi in The Jerusalem Post:
“According to Levi, the soldiers also found construction equipment, including sacks of concrete and metal rods. He said that Israel did not allow those products to enter into the Gaza strip for fear that they would be used to construct fortifications for terrorists and for weapons manufacture.”
So all the equipment the IDF found was equipment they regularly allow to enter Gaza, except for all the equipment they found that they regularly forbid to enter Gaza. I’d say Levi should lose his job for such a poor effort at propagandizing, but I have a sickening feeling he’s got a better than 50/50 chance of being the next White House press secretary.

Oi Vey!!!!! *facepalmbothhands*
Nice read, thanks Mr. Davis for your post.
The idiocy, it burns indeed.
Brilliant.
Let the Palestinians live in tents, or build their homes from mud and sticks.
Brilliant.
The collectively punished have become the collective punishers.
During the period in 1933,34 when Russia was question about its ill treatment of Ukraine’s populace they staged orchestrated demonstrations of a people with plenty to eat all happy and joyous in their circumstance.
7,000,000 people died in one year, murdered by the russians.
~~~EDITED IN MODERATION, attempt to inflame~~~
There’s more to the logic: If all the equipment they found, after hours of searching, is equipment they regularly allow, that means none of it was contraband, weapons, etc, exactly as the flotilla people claimed.
And if their claims have been proven correct, all the material should be immediately turned over to the people of Gaza, all the captured crews and passengers released, and the Israeli government apologize and agree to pay reparations.
You are damn right I want to say the truth…..I am sick unto death of all the lies. Do you remember the USS Liberty that the Zionists attacked with impunity..what are a few American sailors deaths..a mere walk in the park?
I stay away from this stuff because it induces too much rage, but don’t ever call the truth inflammatory, that is as bad as those you so oppose, and if I were Shakespeare. your foil would miss the mark.
The full history of the Holodomor has been suppressed outside and to some extent inside the Ukraine. It doesn’t fit the politically correct narrative of the 20th century.
Inflamed!
On the Dianne Ream Show the Israeli ambassador after having said they could not identify the dead because the identities were unknown went on later to declare that the dead were IHH members. The narrative is so flimsy and phony that it hurts your head. In effect the dead are dead because they have been identified as “terrorists” but at the same time they have no idea who they are.
I’m still trying to figure out what’s with the paint ball guns (WTF)? And will the ships/boats be returned to their rightful owners after being essentially hijacked.
IDF, and Likud, are greatly worried these materials will be used to strengthen tunnel walls from Egypt which import munitions. And ox, food, medicine, and such.
So no cement for tunnel walls for the terrorists!!!!
*heh* I went to the Israel Foreign Ministry website to cite some memorable Ayalon quotes within the past two days, and, lo and behold, this pops up…
I wonder what happened…? ;-)
Thanks for bringing me back lol, I needed that
For the life of me I can’t fathom (other than some political edge) why Hamas refused the supplies Israel tried to deliver from the flotilla.
Well, ok, maybe it was loaded with spy shit, detection devices, perhaps even wired bombs and apparatus to kill more Palistineans . . .
But I’m mystified at Hamas’ rejection of the supplies.
Pups got thoughts?
And please, no Likudnics or IDF PR people need to reply.
We need to start a list of (im) posters who annoy us so we can ignore them.
;-)
Hell, I wish the mods would PUBLISH a list like that!
Save me the time and energy to call shit for what it is!
Save ALL of us time and energy wasted in replies!!! *G*
(just kiddin, mods, just kiddin, lil humor here, sending chocolates and bon bon’s as needed, liquor where appropriate)
*G*
The good news is this approach only reinforces that it’s a humanitarian crisis. As Dr. George Lakoff would point out, you reinforce a frame when you try to negate it. That’s why he titled one of his books “Don’t Think of an Elephant.”
Plenty of us know the history of the Russian changes thru out its history.
Who you talking down to?
(did I just fall for bait, Pups?)
I need a scorecard!!!!!!!!!
*G*
They said that they would take them once all the ship people are released, so I think it is some kind of show of solidarity.
To paraphrase Stephen Colbert, “the truth has a well-known anti-Semitic bias.”
Clogged with their own excrement.
Intertoobs are backed up from their bullshit.
Simple story.
Heck of a find, though, thanks for sharing it CT . . . yer a hoss.
;-)
So are you aware of the recent struggles over the writing of the history within the Ukraine?
Free Gaza issued this press release…
a bit of levity now and then is good fer ya..
Somebody read the thing?
My own personal experience when I was in Israel in 1981? Israelis treated Palestinians as I remember whites treating blacks when I was growing up in south Texas twenty years before.
The truth never does/is, Where the worst among us are awarded doctorates, and aficionados of the green goddess are sent to prison for their transgressions, or tazered, or tortured..on and on.
Where we are ruled by the least among us-h/t Plato
laughter..the best!!
Here is an example of how Palestinians are regarded by IDF.
It is a difficult thing to watch. This is 2003, I believe.
It’s a veritable goldmine of official, inane, Israeli propaganda, and, direct quotes from asinine Ayalon…! ;-)
Seems that what probably should happen next is another flottila of aid. Perhaps with a boat from each national government.
Michael Whitney is upstairs!
CO-Sen: Romanoff Releases White House Email with Job “Suggestions”
Actually, the Flotilla mission can be considered:
1. A humanitarian mission
2. A provocation intended to delegitimize Israel
3. A humanitarian mission intended to delegitimize Israel
Each of the three are legitimate — which to say, rationally defensible — reasons for sending a Freedom Flotilla to Gaza.
Then there is this bit of sophistry:
This reasoning ignores a relevant fact: The blockade has no rational legal reason to exist. It is a political act meant crush the inhabitants of Gaza. It is either a crime against humanity or a crime of war. The Freedom Flotilla and the IDF attack on it did not seek to delegitimize a legally rational and politically legitimate Israeli policy. The Flotilla and the attack on it merely augmented Israel’s already massive legitimation deficit.
Israel needs to get its house in order if it wishes to enjoy the legitimacy commonly given to a lawful state.
But, Levi did lay it all out line…
That truly sums up their height of paranoia…! 8-(
I wish Israel would get its hand out of the US’s pocket.
Thanks Newt☺☺ Very worth while watching.
It’s true. The Gazans can easily use shoelaces to menace Israeli gunships while the ships are shooting rockets at children hiding in a mound of rubble! It would be irresponsible of the Israeli government to fail to protect its brave soldiers from this shoelace terror weapon.
*heh* Just look at what those Turks did to those IDF commandos with mere mop handles…! ;-)
Anybody have a link on the info that Hamas refused the supplies? I haven’t seen an original source on that yet.
Speaking of weapons manufacture, the rockets have always been inaccurate, range limited, and not at all effective in actual physical destruction. HAMAS knows this and Israel knows this. Even the victims who shelter against the attacks know it as an irritant and scary but proven to be no more than that. Rockets give the young and frustrated in GAZA, release in form of pretend combat but yields zero destructive results.
What rockets have yielded for Israel’s political establishment is an excuse to continue its vile policies. What it gives HAMAS is the mirror image of Israel’s victimization as rockets reliably yield Israeli response which fuels political support. What HAMAS has not quite cottoned onto is that the rockets’ effectiveness as a polical weapon is probably weighing much heavier in Israeli favor than on HAMAS’s. The way things are progressing, it would appear that rockets are no longer necessary to yield the kind of retalitory repression and violence to the Palestinians in the eyes of the world. HAMAS were it smart would stop rocketry.
Absence of rockets will define more starkly the outlines of the disputes as Israel runs out of excuses. Is HAMAS smart enough to figure out that it can trade for only so long, on getting its supporters and would be supporters beaten up and killed is the way to political success? (Arafat was not) Israeli government in the meantime has long ago gone over the edge in terms of false victimhood to justify its policies.
HAMAS rockets can barely lift manhole covers compared to what real rockets like the puny ones that are fired from Israeli drones and helicopters can do, which is to take out buildings. The asymmetry of this conflict is staggering and would be a joke were it not for the real consequences. The ratio of captured “soldiers” as well as the ratio of dead and injured should be the measure of the conflict, not how many rockets were fired (made out of banned tomato sauce tins?) in the past year.
Late Night: When You’re Shallower & More Vicious Than Sally Quinn, Wow…
“Disproportionate Response” has been bandied about on the floor of the UN General Assembly, but, not even a whisper of it in the Halls of Congress…! 8-(
Awesome video. It is a shame that US media is unwilling to examine the US’s relationship with Israel and to show it for the disgrace it truly is. The reason the US props up such a corrupt and barbaric regime is beyond me. I wish Israel the best, but why the US has chosen to defend them, fund them and generally shield them from any and all UN action is a travesty. We have enough problems, the Israelis need to go their own way.
So tired of looking at footage of them abusing Palestinians with US weapons. If they’re so big and brave and desperate to show their will to survive, let them pursue that without our support. It’s time to let them sink or swim on their own.
This also reflects the failed leadership and limited vision of Hamas. Fire ineffective rockets to show you can. And give political cover for Israeli retaliation.
Bravo! I posted as much last night.
If I were in the Turkish government, I’d consider this an act of war. I can’t imagine how Ireland will react if their dignitaries on the Rachel Corrie are treated the same way (or worse, as the Israeli navy threatened).
It’s time for this B.S. to stop. The state has become hyper-aggressive, paranoid and a sponsor of terror.
And they have nuclear weapons.
The U.N. giveth and the U.N. can damn well taketh away.
Yeah, I meant to be explaining why the page disappeared8)
Very confused.
The Palestinians say the ships cargo lacked the MRI machines/CAT scan machines and other needs of the area – while having wheelchairs, etc that they do not need.
The vast majority of the material is now at the Kerem Shalom crossing, but needs pick up by the Palestinian side. The construction material is still in the Ashdod Port awaiting a decision as to what to do with it.
But held back of course is the knives, clubs, slingshots, bulletproof vests, gas masks and night vision goggles.
Holding back cement and metal rods because you fear Hamas will use the material to build bunkers and weapons seems wrong. I understand the cement and metal rods may get to Gaza after further review – but the Israeli list of permitted items lacks logic and is far too short, with too few trucks assigned to the transfer. – IMO
“Disproportionate Response”
Seems the initial report of paint ball troops with side arms is giving way to a mixed group where some had paint guns and others had machine guns (per a former US Ambassador to Iraq).
“A 1988 U.N. Convention, to which both Israel and Turkey are parties, prohibits seizure of ships on the high seas or acts of violence against the passengers. Ironically, the treaty was adopted in response to the hijacking of the Achille Lauro in 1985 by Palestinian terrorists.”
Uruknet posted this. It’s originally from Politico. VP Joe Biden in an interview with Charlie Rose airing on PBS:
Well, gee, maybe the big deal is that Gaza is, y’know, under siege!!! Maybe because stuff that outsiders bring to Israel to be distributed in Gaza will never get there! Yeesh!
I should note that the only “weapons” – knives – is weak tea for any real claim that they were stopping weapons.
If the blockade is illegal, the statement
“A 1988 U.N. Convention, to which both Israel and Turkey are parties, prohibits seizure of ships on the high seas or acts of violence against the passengers. Ironically, the treaty was adopted in response to the hijacking of the Achille Lauro in 1985 by Palestinian terrorists.”
applies.
If it is legal as a response to rockets fired into Israel, the blockade rules apply – and there are no “internationl waters safe areas” for a ship with the announced intent of breaking the blockade.
My guess is that the harsh blockade with limited permitted items will become a blockade with less limited permitted item list – and more trucks – shortly.
Has Egypt stated that it will drop its blockade of Gaza?
Mubarek is a bloody dictator and a US puppet.
Would you imagine the two UN resolutions condemning the siege be an indication that it’s more likely to be legal, or less likely to be legal?
WHEN THE OPPRESSED BECOME THE OPPRESSORS! FUCKING HYPOCRITES FORGETTING HISTORY AND THE SUFFERING OF PEOPLE, PERIOD! ABJECT FUCKING LOSERS!!!!!!!
Why do seemingly intelligent, progressive people like Eliot Spitzer and Arianna Huffington automatically defend Israel no matter what atrocity it commits? It reminds me of the near-universal reaction of black Americans to the O.J. Simpson verdict. Black people were so convinced that a corrupt police force framed O.J., that they couldn’t believe he was just another guy killing his wife. American Jews have this same blind spot of always believing they are the victims. Thank God for Glenn Greenwald….his bravery and moral sense are a shining beacon in a very wide and dark sea.
Hamas says they want to exterminate the Israel nation. What is Israel supposed to do? Let them? I think not.
What does this have to do with Hamas? There is NO CONNECTION between the aid flotilla and Hamas, whatever the apologists would have us believe.
Uh, Hamas controls Gaza, and was freely elected to do so, last I heard.
Just sayin’ . . . .
and now israel claims energy independence for the rest of their lives with another gas field find off the coast of haifa
but they wouldn’t exaggerate something like that
