I love the Personal Democracy Forum, which happens on Thursday and Friday of this week in New York. Organized by Micah Sifry and Andrew Raseij of Tech President, it always attracts an interesting group of thinkers and activists from diverse disciplines and political perspectives from around the world.
Two years ago I remember sitting in the auditorium balcony at PDF while Elizabeth Edwards was speaking via Skype on an enormous screen. I was fussing with some new phone someone had handed me when I suddenly heard Elizabeth say something like “… turned us down, I think it was Jane Hamsher.” I had to discreetly tap a couple of people and ask “what the heck was that?” Someone had asked her about the early tempest in a teapot over the bloggers hired by the Edwards campaign. They said she couldn’t remember, but thought that she had offered me the job first, and I’d turned her down. I emailed Elizabeth: “It wasn’t me!” She emailed back “I didn’t think it was, but it was someone with good sense.”
I’m going to be a keynote speaker this Thursday morning, along with John Perry Barlow, Clay Johnson, Eli Pariser, Newt Gingrich and Anil Dash. We’ll all be giving short talk on “Can the Internet Fix Politics?” I’ll also be on a panel on Friday afternoon along with Patrick Ruffini, Taegan Goddard and Lisa Stone, talking about “The Enduring Importance of Blogs as Organizing Hubs.” And Cory Booker will be the closing speaker on Friday
Registration closes at 1pm ET today. You can get $100 off by registering here and using the code FIREDOGLAKE.

About Firedoglake
Ask Newt why Righty Blogs lie so much. My theory is you lie when the truth won’t get you what you want.
Ask Newt why the GOP media/blogs coordinate so much better than us and pick up each others stories/message.
How many stories do we do Denmark giving a $40,000 tax break for electric cars comes to mind and our supposedly liberal media won’t touch it?
Remember Newt loves high tech and tax breaks so you might want to lead with the second question to get him talking.
Fox News says stuff Rush says stuff from the Righty Blogs and Vice a Versa Finding recent examples should not be hard but I can’t help you there.
Really wish I could go, have other friends and acquaintances who will be there. But alas, this forum never seems to happen after the kids get out of school!
Should be a great time. I’ve heard great things about previous PDF events.
Ask Newt what he thinks of the book “King of the Mountain”
Wait. Newt Gingrich is a “thinker”?!?
Don’t touch him, warts.
No thanks, I don’t trust myself around Newt Gingrich. Especially if rotten fruit is available.
…or you could ask him in a throaty voice, “Newty, run fetch me some cigarettes, that’s a dear.”
LMAO! Just don’t ask him if he’s got a loofah. Ewww! I just made myself sick a bit.
Congratulations, Jane, and give ‘em heck! I’m sure you’ll do a great job.
I would suggest asking Newt how he sleeps at night, but I suspect he sleeps very well, indeed.
I’m sure it will be an interesting and thought-provoking conference and I look forward to hearing more about it.

I don’t have much in common with these folks.
It already has, that’s why the MOTU are so intent on controlling it.
Comcast hijacks my browser every time I try to directly navigate to buzzflashDOTcom, (it didn’t used to happen) I interpret that as a shot over my bow and believe it’s only a matter of time before they start screening FDL and truthout in the same way.
The net can and probably will be rendered useless for organizers/activists if the big providers get their way, and I don’t see what’s to stop them
.
“We’ll all be giving short talk on “Can the Internet Fix Politics?”
I hope someone will give public financing of elections a shout. There is a little flame glowing that needs oxygen.
The right like Newt are still insane! And many on the left caved in to the 0bamabots without critically analyzing 0bama and his fraudulent life story. Any attempt to disagree with 0bama was always met with orchestrated attacks crying racism, racism and racism. If this is the legacy of the internet, we better think long and hard about how it operates. This 0bama is such a fraud that the left should stand up and apologize to the world for this mistake.
No but its funny to hear him try and bend all truth his way.
Cite the fraud give examples and links. Yes he lied about healthcare, ending the wars etc but just looking at his past record before he became President was he really any more to the Right of Hilary?
Our commentors as a group do research the Righty blogs not so much. I have noticed the anti knowledge trolls attacking Wiki often with no evidence but then claiming their sources are factual and unbiased.
They seem to ignore our evidence their sources are lies.

Turns out Susan Smith’s stepdad was campaigning for Pat Robertson and molesting his daughter. Susan’s family values mom talked her daughter out of pressing charges.
Susan later killed her kids blamed black car jackers and Newt much like Jon McCain rushed onto the hate band wagon just in time for an election.

GOP Rep Mark Foley liked kids, the anti gay marriage Catholic Church has covered up had how many hundreds? thousands of child molesting cases. The Mormon church and the Boyscouts both anti gay have a case they covered up.
Given Newts own problems caring for his kids who would want him looking after the country? Newt always goes the low road to win. Only a weak man has to go the low road to win.
Do we want a weak President?
Why would you participate in an event that features Newt Gingrich? Gingrich is a ruthless sociopath who has been furthering the interests of the richest, most powerful, most tribalist entities for decades. If he is at the event, it is because it will help him, not because it will help “personal democracy”, whatever the hell that means.
What is the justification for legitimizing a man who should be shunned, if not indicted, for his numerous crimes against our nation and our society? Why provide cover for a man who couldn’t possibly care less about the interests of the average FDL reader? How is this any different from David Gregory shamelessly shucking and jiving behind Karl Rove? Isn’t it, in fact, worse, since this event is supposed to be substantial and not merely congenial?
Forgive me for asking, Ms. Hamsher, but if you are willing to be a co-star of an event with Newt Gingrich — a man personally responsible for a significant portion of the damage you yourself work to undo — who *won’t* you appear with?
To size up Sarah’s VP? Jane is a Left Blogger this is research.
.
So we must take every opportunity to oppose him.
He thinks it will help him thats because Newt does so well debating fake TV liberals who always surrender.
Jane’s been covering the issues and debating them non stop with US and the Trolls while Newt has been surrounded by Yes Men.
Jane is prepared to argue. But even if the talk is civilized a look at Newt gives us a look at how the Corporate GOP thinks.
We need to know our enemies.
Jesus seemed to prefer to hang with Hoes and Tax Collectors, he even debated with Pharisees. I will concede that no biblical Pharisee was ever as evil or as stupid as Newt.
WTF is Newt Ginrich doing showing up at something with “democracy” in the title?
That mendacious piece of offal deserves a good pie in the face a la Kristol. Why would anyone pay good money to be lied to by that evil, creepy asshole?
