So, what do you guys have planned for the weekend. Any good cookouts planned?

Late Night: Obama on the Beach |
| By: Swopa Friday May 28, 2010 8:23 pm |
As Richard M. Nixon could have told Barack Obama, any time you’re on the beach in dress clothes and the press is watching, it’s probably not good news. In this case, in an embarrassingly small-ball version of “Message: I Care,” President Obama got himself caught on video explaining to Lafourche Parish President Charlotte Randolph how [...]
The New Disasters |
| By: Eli Friday May 28, 2010 6:01 pm |
I’ve seen people variously describe the Gulf of Mexico catastrophe as “Obama’s Katrina” or “Obama’s 9/11,” but neither of those entirely works for me as a parallel. True, the government was woefully unprepared and ineffectual in 2001 and 2005 too, but that was because Bush was the worst president ever, not because industry lobbyists crusaded to cripple FEMA and airport security. Bush’s incompetence left the door to tragedy wide open, and Katrina and al Qaeda breezed right through it.
Grim Milestone in Headstones as Afghanistan War Becomes America’s Longest |
| By: Jim White Friday May 28, 2010 5:21 pm |
As we enter the Memorial Day weekend, it is especially sad that the United States is suffering its 1000th death in Afghanistan at the same time that Afghanistan is becoming the longest war in American history.
Iz R Gummit Learning? Barack Obama Meets Alan Greenspan, And Nobody Notices |
| By: Scarecrow Friday May 28, 2010 4:55 pm |
The New York Times front page editors waste our time with an above the fold piece in which Peter Baker ponders how unusual it was for President Obama to say “I was wrong,” since none of his predecessors could manage much more than “mistakes were made.” But wrong about what?
Reports: Immigration Makes Cities Safer |
| By: David Dayen Friday May 28, 2010 4:10 pm |
We know that the US-Mexico border where the President just sent 1,200 National Guard troops has actually experienced a drop in crime over the last several years. We know that the stories of rampant lawlessness due to undocumented immigration are overblown and often flat wrong. What we did not know until a recent report from the University of Colorado is that cities with higher levels of immigration are actually safer places to live.
Unions Begin to Organize California Marijuana Industry |
| By: Michael Whitney Friday May 28, 2010 3:25 pm |
Employees in California’s huge marijuana industry are starting to join unions. One hundred employees in Oakland pot shops – including Oaksterdam University and Blue Sky Coffee Shop, the establishments of California cannabis initiative lead Richard Lee – will announce tomorrow they will join the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW). The workers all signed cards and will have their union recognized under majority sign-up.
BP Suspends “Top Kill” Again After “Junk Shot” Hasn’t Stopped Gusher [Update: It Resumes] |
| By: Scarecrow Friday May 28, 2010 2:40 pm |
The New York Times is reporting that BP suspended its “top kill” efforts late last night after it became apparent the effort to clog up the Blowout preventer with a “junk shot” was failing to keep mud from gushing out the BOP and riser pipe.
As Oil Floods the Gulf, Hearings Reveal BP’s Criminal Behavior |
| By: bmaz Friday May 28, 2010 1:55 pm |
The Obama Administration and its DOJ owes the citizens a better effort than they have mustered to date. It is funny they are out trying to prosecute Guantanamo defense attorneys for doing their jobs and are still hell bent to persecute inconsequential marijuana crimes, but have no burning desire to go hard after BP, the biggest environmental criminal in history. How can that be?
