It’s been 24 hours since we began watching live video of the Freedom Flotilla as it attempted to deliver 10,000 metric tons of humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza, and much remains murky. With the Israeli government refusing to provide information on the killed, injured and detained passengers – who included European legislators, medical personnel and activists, all civilians – we are left in the dark.
Of course, Israel is quite happy to spread around the latest IDF videos which claim to show the events on the ships as Israeli commandos attacked. Left out of those video accounts is the essential, core fact that the ships were in international waters at the time – and had in fact specifically decided to alter their course to avoid just such a confrontation during the night.
Many of us watching the live feeds from Turkish TV heard the announcement of the captains decision to shift his course shortly after the Israeli warships made initial contact when the flotilla was still 100 miles off the coast. We then saw the passengers take off their life vests and relax after the initial preparations made with the first Israeli radio message. We thought that things would be calm overnight. We were oh so wrong.
The IDF – forgetting that in a wired world, they do not have total control of what we see and therefore think – has been flogging a set of videos purporting to show the boarding and also provided handy onscreen notes in case US media doesn’t see it the same way. They’ve also provided random shots of slingshots and a few boards or pipes – just lying on what appears to be a ship’s deck but note carefully that they provide no footage of these “weapons” being used nor proof they even belong to the passengers.
Now consider this PR effort in the conjunction with the pre-flotilla effort the IDF launched and which is well documented in the video above. Along with multiple lies about conditions in Gaza, the Israeli Government Publicity Office sent round an “ironic” press release recommending that journalists going to Gaza dine at an upscale restaurant, a claim made to counter any concerns about the desperate conditions in Gaza which had just been reported once again by the UN Relief Agency.
But just as many of us know the lie of today’s Israeli spin which claims Israel’s murder of up to 19 civilians was justified, the lie of the restaurant video effort was shown clearly when viewers saw Mahmoud Abbas dining in the Israeli video. Abbas has not been in Gaza since the launch of the Israeli siege and the video was years old.
Did some passengers resist the Israeli attack – perhaps. In fact some of the Turkish TV video appears to show one or two passengers pushing a commando against a door as he drops from the helicpter onto the deck. So we have the elite Israeli commandos, trained for weeks to board these vessels pushed about – and this justifies the killing of up to 19 civilians? Repeat after me: the passengers were aboard a legal vessel in international waters – not attacking Israel in any fashion – and never intending to land in Israel at all.
Or as Dror Feiler, an Israeli organizer of the flotilla said before sailing:
In an interview with Israel Radio, he said he’s considered the various scenarios: “Either they take over our ships and force us to come to Ashdod, or intercept and sink us — or we’ll make it to Gaza. If we make it, we will have broken the siege. If they sink us, they will be showing the true face of a country gone insane. And if they force us into Ashdod, then they will be exactly like pirates in the Gulf of Aden . . . they’ll be the new pirates of the Mediterranean.”
As of now, there are reliable reports of a death toll of up to 19, with at least 50 wounded and numerous journalists held without the ability to contact their employers. The PM of Ireland has rightly accused the Israeli’s of kidnapping Irish citizens and governments around the world are demanding explanations and information on their citizens as well as an independent investigation. People around the word have gathered to protest this new Israeli crime – from Iraq to Times Square.
The US however is simply asking Netanyahu to investigate – and parroting Israel’s own language – expressing regret at the loss of life. As I write this, the UN Security Council is still conferring behind closed doors with CNN I reporting that the US is blocking efforts to launch an independent investigation into Israel’s actions on the high seas.
Meanwhile, in Istanbul, Turkish families wait for word on their loved ones:
“My son is 4 years old and my daughter is 6. They packed 300 lollipops for their father to take to Palestinian children in Gaza,” [Aynur Akdeniz] said through tears.
… Like the other families gathered at the İHH building trying to obtain news from their relatives on the ship, Akdeniz said she was shocked by the attacks and that she was worried and crying.
“I did not expect that much cruelty. My husband even did not have a pocket knife on him,” she said. “It was a strict rule for all of them not to have anything that might be used as a weapon. But Israel was afraid of a few civilian people.”
While we wait for word from the passengers, we also have learned that a 21 year old American student in Israel has been shot in the eye by Israeli forces with a gas cannister and will lose her eye.

Barbarity. Though when they kill less then 100 people it seems to mean that they are exercising restraint.
as Glenn Greenwald notes:
What a rogue state, heedless of international norms.
Aloha, Siun…
As I noted on Mark’s awesome diary
There’s worse to come.
Yes. Israel was indeed afraid of a few unarmed civilians, and properly so. It will take unarmed solidarity that spans the world to break this siege and the Gaza cleansing.
It is unfortunate that Israel’s political elite are utterly shameless and cruel imperialists. One just wonders what kind of threat it will take to bring a humble Israel to the negotiating table.
Krauthammer has been on Fox all day apologizing and making the usual excuses. The chyron below says that Israeli soldiers descended from helicopters onto the decks of the ships, were “attacked” and were “forced to defend themselves.”
Really?
Drop from the sky in combat gear at midnight onto the ships and call it “defending themselves?” Where have we heard THIS before?
The news has been all Israel, all the way, but I think the world is finally figuring out who the “attackers” really are.
As I recall from Sunday school, David beat Goliath with a slingshot. But now Israel, sorry as I am to have to say it, is Goliath, and the people in this flotilla were the Davids who have handed Israel a defeat with the slingshot of publicity.
ACK — I see that emptywheel has beaten me to the punch. Never mind.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/05/31/AR2010053102860.html
This is just sickening.
When will this rogue state be reined in?
The Israeli right believes it’s own PR, and the fellacial praise they get from
the likes of Krauthammer and Kristol.
The fact is that both Lebanon in 2006 and Gaza in 2009 were
tactical stalemates and strategic blunders.
Yes, just like O.J. gets to hunt the real killer and BP gets to control their own crime scene.
Israelis fired on activists before boarding ship…
They truly screwed the pooch…!
“the Israeli Government Publicity Office sent round an “ironic” press release recommending that journalists going to Gaza dine at an upscale restaurant, a claim made to counter any concerns about the desperate conditions in Gaza which had just been reported once again by the UN Relief Agency.”
This is so sickeningly like the kinds of things the nazi german government used to say about the warsaw ghetto’s. i guess no one should be suprised.
Siun,
So good to see you! I have not seen you post or comment in the short while I have been back at FDL making comments and wondered what happened to some of the posters from ’05,’06,’07,’08 and ’09. You were one of them and *ilson too. I always kept up, just did not do much commenting.
You helped me with a song that I commented on about “Something happening here…” and chimed in with Buffalo Springfield as the group. I never forgot your help.
Now about your post.
“The passengers were aboard a legal vessel in international waters…”
I will be waiting to hear the comments from Obama, Rahm, and especially Joe Lieberman on what happened. Silence is not golden here and if they say nothing, then we can all see what they are really about.
The very fact that action is being held up in the U.N. by the United States
is a very telling sign.
No, I am not anti-semitic, not against the Israelis, I have supported many of their actions including the raids against terrorists and their organizations. Idi Amin comes to mind at the present, but I do not condone what happened here if all of it is true.
the Isreali’s were firing as they decended from the helicopters. i just saw the isreali ambassador to the US claim that they were firing “paint guns”. this claim was made on the news hour, to gwen eiffel.

I saw some of the coverage on CNN. It was typical he said/she said kind of stuff. You could tell what their slant was because they kept referring to the humanitarian flotilla as made up of “pro-Palestinian activists.” But then when they went to their correspondents in Istanbul and Israel, the mask slipped because the Istanbul correspondent was telling how Turkish custom agents had gone over the ships and had made sure they were only carrying humanitarian supplies, and the reporter in Israel reminded how Israel was controling all the information so we were only getting one side. Then it was back stateside where the CNN bubbleheads went back to their standard shilling.
The real impact is going to be diplomatic. We can expect Obama to be useless. But Israel has burned Turkey a longtime ally over this. This is also not going to play well in Europe. They are closer to the action than we are and they had officials on board. Then there is the international community, and there the fact that this took place in international waters is going to be a major concern. It is both piracy and state sponsored terrorism.
In terms of Israel, this kind of action was unfortunately unsurprising. Israel has a fascist government in power. Most of its electorate trends that way. So while an action like this might seem extreme and indefensible to us, from a fascist perspective, it is perfectly natural. If the international community condemns it, this reinforces the paranoia that spawned it.
The parallels with the BP oil spill are marked. In both, the leadership does not see a massacre or oil spill as the problem but the PR. In both, Obama will show how useless he is. Expect a few comments, in which he manages to blame the Palestinians, not accuse Israel directly of much of anything, and then nothing.
His claim was also that the action was legal…that with the blockade they have the right to prevent the others from approaching and cited UN authority. It will be interesting to follow this arguement.
I’m wondering if Obama and the dems are willing to put Israel on one side of the scale and the rest of the globe on another, and then support Israel.
J Street Prez:
“In terms of Israel, this kind of action was unfortunately unsurprising. Israel has a fascist government in power.”
The oppressed have become the oppressors! German U-Boats come to mind. The tonnage on the Atlantic’s floor and the forgotten lives lost a sea. IDF has big balls like the sick Nazi bastards killed by our American GI’s in Europe? America killed bastards with twisted logic so the IDF could behave like NAZIS? Yes today is Memorial Day!! I’m enraged!
Hello AppleCanyon! and welcome back!
I post every Sunday night btw – come and visit.
As for what we will hear … crickets I suspect.
Those “paint guns” are used on the West Bank too – and kill people when aimed at their heads at close range – something has happened.
Do I believe they were just firing those … nope … but even if they were, they were not like a friendly game of paintball.
The framing of all of this as a “debate” is our media’s way to avoid simply reporting the facts. So convenient and so telling.
What ever happened to that story we heard last night about the Peace Activists using kids as human shields?
No Israeli video on that?
Finally some good news!
Great to see you and welcome back to the Lake.
Hope this brings back some memories.
Good point also were not the commandos wearing body armor and helmets?
Oxymoron:
Well done RBG – that remains a mighty good song, eh?
Good of AppleCanyon to remind us again.
but, but, but ….
Thanks Things!
And then there’s the Israeli clamp down on protests about this. Horrific that woman lost her eye because she was fired at point blank with tear gas. And, she was unarmed.
People are being asked to sign statements that they entered Israel illegally before they can be released. Did they use the same legal firm that BP used to get the fishermen’s waivers in the gulf?
Exactly. JStreet is walking a tightrope!
Yes it does, and sometimes it takes an Apple Canyon to remind of those moments. :)
That exact sentence stood out for me as well.
Any chance anybody will visit the Peace Activists being held Prisoner by Israel now? The U.N, Red Cross, Red Crescent, Amnesty International, Turkish, Greek, German, Irish etc diplomats?
I want to hear their stories about what really happened.
I want White Faces telling America in English how they were treated. This is a catch 22 situation Release the prisoners and they talk to the press.
Don’t release the prisoners and they become the the story.
I see no wining moves here except maybe if the Israeli Prime Minister resigns.
The ante has been upped…
Automatic weapons and axes…! *gah*
They were not firing paint guns? If we get someone in to check on all the wounded and it turns out Israel was lying about using paint guns then the idea of letting Israel investigate themselves becomes even more stupid.

Just like the one the IDF appointed to investigate Cast Lead ‘incidents’…! 8-(
I just checked to see if the Israeli Navy has tugboats at their disposal in their fleet. They do.
If Israel didn’t want the flotilla going to Gaza, take the Israeli Navy fleet tug boat/s, meet the flotilla after it’s no longer in international waters, and push/pull the whole frakin’ flotilla wherever they wanted it to dock.
It seems the hasbara operatives will soon have their talking points in order.
right now, obviously, they do not.
coincidentally, or not, certain familiar names are missing from this discussion so far.
Then where is the video of Israeli troops in the hospital? If they had that video they would have released it by now.
Fracking Amateur hour. Last night I heard knives, axes, pistols? now its automatic weapons pick a story and stick with it first rule of lying.
This is raising the stakes after you lay down a losing hand of cards.
Didn’t catch it all, but was listening to BBC “The World” on NPR on the way to get groceries this evening and they played a recording from the Israelis saying that some of the people aboard those vessels are “Pro-Palestinian” and they threw in Al Qaeda before Hamas as some of the organizations the people aboard the ships were affiliated with.
Of course, scare the Americans to think that the humanitarian mission was filled with evil Al Qaeda terrorists. Boogie-boogie! Obvious fear tactics.
Can’t wait to hear the White House view on things. I’m certain it will be something like, “We can’t comment on that and we’ll let Israel speak for themselves and we trust them.. blah blah blah. We have a special relationship with them and we give them billions of dollars each year for genocide.”
Really.. Is Israel the 51st state? If no one has noticed, we’re not doing very well right now. Any reason we continue to stand firm on Israel? Can’t we acknowledge that the creation of Israel where it is was a stupid idea. Can’t we acknowledge that supporting this state has no tactical of strategic advantage for us. Don’t give me that shit about Israel keeping the Arab states in line. The last thing the US needs to support right now is a bully.
Imagine if we actually withdrew our support and actually acted as an impartial negotiator.. You know that crap Obama was spinning when he first got into office. Imagine how much better off we’d be.
U S activist loses eye. 21 year old Emil Henochowicz was hit in the face with a tear gas projectile fired by an Israeli soldier during a peaceful protest.

Paint guns? So supposedly those 20 people died from paintball shots? And the 50 people injured from paintball bruises? I guess they selected RED as the color of the paintballs, because I saw no green or blue or purple splotches. Just lots of blood red.
And this sort of raises the question of why the IDF would be concerned about a paint-ball gun wrested away from one of their forces? Oh wait, they had real weapons…after all. Caught us in another lie! So perhaps the story about the other guns also is bogus…as is the wrested weapon (one would think that trained IDF Special Forces would have “secure safeties” in close contact incidents that would make a weapon controlled by a non IDF individual useless).
With the amount of IDF footage and the number of so-called weapons shown on the videos you’d think that there’d be one that would show those “weapons” being used. In fact, since the Al Jazeera and Turkish TV footage was live it’s odd there’s no footage there either. Simply a lot of IDF assaults and shooting…of their lethal paintball guns.
Oh No! The ante has been upped further…
Oh NO! Ninjas with Automatic weapons and broadswords! *double* *gah*
Ninjas wait the Japanese are involved too:)
J Street is getting fairly useless.
Aloha, C’ape…! I did see an Ayalon cite mentioning ‘paintball guns’, but, I summarily dismissed it, along side all the other bile he was spewing…!
And…even if true…how would those on board have any clue that they were going to shoot paint as the rifles were pointed at them? Let’s see: We sneak up on your ship and board it while in international waters, before daybreak, even though we know you changed course so as to avoid a confrontation at night…we’ve threatened you before, killed your kin, accused your friends of lying, calling them “terroist” supporters…and as we climb on board/helicopter drop in, in combat uniforms, complete with helmets and masks and automatic rifles…expect you to know: Yep, just gonna do paint balls this time, folks! Hey, what to worry about, anyway?
Over-the-top parsing. Over-the-top, fictionalized parsing.

Remembering Soldiers with Invisible Wounds
Civilians attacking commandos. This is like those cops who attacked an apartment where their suspect was not. They shot and killed a 7 year old girl sleeping in her bed and arrested her grandmother for assaulting an officer. Or the commandos were “provoked”. Like the wife beater who actually said to me it was her fault because if she didn’t piss me off I wouldn’t beat her up. Why doesn’t Bebe just say, “we’re paranoid and blood thirsty and we will kill anybody that looks at us sideways”. This shit really looks bad when Israel does it. Now we know what we look like to the rest of the world in Iraq.
Based on my calculations of how much economic aid they’re getting compared to the states in crisis in the lower-48; Israel is the 1st state.
The Israeli government behave like animals…
Israel is a rogue, terrorist state
They apparently think it’s still 1968, when they can attack a US Navy ship and essentially get off with a handslap.
They think wrong.
Turkey, their best friend in the Middle East, is a friend no more — it has canceled all its joint exercises and recalled its ambassadors, and may be planning a naval escort for the flotilla to Gaza.
And that’s for starters.
P.S. If it was only paintballs, how could they so quickly change whatever you need to do to a rifle to substitute bullets for the paint? Is it even possible to do such a switch from paint to bullets within seconds, as obviously had to happen? (I don’t do guns or rifles, so have no idea.)
Yes.
*heh* The NewsHour still has awhile before it airs here…! I’m not sure if my TV will survive the ‘interview’…!
Soon, the U.S. will not be able to pay its legions. Israel will be alone. Then Israel will sue for peace.
Is planning, PW…! ;-)
:)
Evidently, the “paintballs” contained whitewash…..
Loo Hoo, I would suggest reading Jeffrey Goldberg’s Obama interview from May,2008 for the Atlantic magazine in its entirety.
Here’s an excerpt:
Obama on Zionism and Hamas
May 12 2008, 11:58 AM ET
Obama and I spoke over the weekend about Hamas, about Jimmy Carter, and about the future of Jewish settlements on the West Bank. He seemed eager to talk about his ties to the Jewish community, and about the influence Jews have had on his life. Among other things, he told me that he learned the art of moral anguish from Jews. We spoke as well about my Atlantic cover story on Israel’s future. And, speaking in a kind of code Jews readily understand, Obama also made sure to mention that he was fond of the writer Leon Uris, the author of Exodus.
Here are excerpts from our conversation:
JG: Do you think that justice is still on Israel’s side?
BO: I know that that there are those who would argue that in some ways America has become a safe refuge for the Jewish people, but if you’ve gone through the Holocaust, then that does not offer the same sense of confidence and security as the idea that the Jewish people can take care of themselves no matter what happens. That makes it a fundamentally just idea.
That does not mean that I would agree with every action of the state of Israel, because it’s a government and it has politicians, and as a politician myself I am deeply mindful that we are imperfect creatures and don’t always act with justice uppermost on our minds.
My staff teases me sometimes about anguishing over moral questions. I think I learned that partly from Jewish thought, that your actions have consequences and that they matter and that we have moral imperatives. The point is, if you look at my writings and my history, my commitment to Israel and the Jewish people is more than skin-deep and it’s more than political expediency.”
Obama on Zionism and Hamas – International – The AtlanticMay 12, 2008 … The Hamas leader Ahmed Yousef did Barack Obama no favor recently when he said: â œWe like Mr. Obama…

Memorial Day Memory Hole: After Israel Forgets “Exodus”, White House Forgets “Shores of Tripoli”. Will Obama Remember NATO?
Not a SINGLE mention of this on Daily Kult’s front page. What a joke.
I posted there about an hour ago asking why there isn’t an official article, only diaries. I was told it went against the “mission” (electing Democrats) of the site. In fairness, electing Democrats has been the mission of Daily Kos from day one. But they have diverged from their mission plenty of times before. Maybe the feature writers have Memorial Day off?
This is fucking lunacy.
And you know what, our hands are bloody too.
We enable Isreal to do whatever Israel does.
It’s sickening.
Assholes.
Just got back from a protest at the Israeli Embassy in LA. Unfortunately the gathering was underwhelming. There were however no defenders of Israel’s actions there, so we had both sides of Wilshire to ourselves.
My sweet little 18 year old cat disappeared a day ago and it has left me a bit weird.
Waking up this morning to BBC talking about the Israeli attack on the Gaza Aid Mission added another alienating factor to my weird world. While reading Siun’s post (with comments) and Greenwald’s I was in tears and disbelief. And when I read a comment about Israeli need to react to “slingshot” attacks (also reported by emptywheel), I started to feel like I was sliding down the fabled rabbit hole — and at the same time trying to restrain laughter. When I heard Michael Oren — Israel’s Ambassador to the U.S. — again mention “slingshots” early this afernoon, and then double down on Israel’s use of “Paint Ball Weapons” to restrain the evil “activists” I was sure that my water supply had been contaminated with LSD or some other mind-bending substance in some sci-fi-like attempt to subvert my rational thoughts (not to mention my essential bodily fluids). Nothing made any sense anymore: victims turned into “attackers,” resistance turned into “provocation,” and attacks on peaceful people in International Waters described as “asked for” by provacateurs. I must be somewhere beyond the looking glass — because I am having trouble appreciating the awesome disconnect between the humor, absurdity, and pathos of the Israeli attempt to explain the bizarre situation that we have absorbed today.
To top off the execrable coverage by the major media of the disaster today was PBS’s abominable treatment of Adam Shapiro by Gwen Ifill — coupled with the smooching of Michael Oren this evening — was the proverbial “cherry on top” of the whole mess. I vote for Adam Shapiro as one of the heros of the battle of the media.

Late Night: Thinking About What’s Missing
I suppose some may think me a bit off-topic, but Israel’s use of paint ball guns has resulted in NINE DEAD, which I take, and offer, as support for my anti-paint ball campaign.
Zenjuris … so sorry to hear about your kitty …
Exactly: let’s debate about facts, even though we don’t know what they are.
Al Jazeera was able to broadcast for 10 minutes before Israel cut off all satellite connections to the Free Gaza flotilla. You could hear shots being fired by the Israelis before the white flag on the ship went up and after the white flag went up. The reporter said that two people were all ready dead before the Israeli soldiers were even on the ship from the firing of live ammunition
Israeli commandos also confiscated all of the activist recording equipment. If Israel was so clear about the legality of their actions why did they cut off all communication outlets? Why did they block journalist access to all involved?
