Then we hopped on the Blackpool Streetcar — the open-top F-line streetcar that runs in good weather only — and rode down the Embarcadero. It is the most fun vintage streetcar in all of San Francisco. Wooden-slat seats, bright lights strung from stem to stern, a cheerful airhorn and ringing bells. I’ve wanted to ride it since they put it in service a decade ago; yesterday was my first time ever! I perfected my parade float wave, riding all the way down the Embarcadero. We rode in the front seat and passed many cars stopped in traffic in both directions, as well as happy holidaying pedestrians.
Here’s a photo of the Boat/StreetCar at right.

We disembarked at the Ferry Building to join the big protest march to AT&T Park against the owners of the AZ Diamondbacks, because they fund the Arizona GOP, the folks who brought SB-1070 to America. I took some photos of some signs from that protest here. I hope these protests, as well as the much bigger one in Phoenix, will convince folks to reconsider. We’ll see.
Then… homeward bound, after a wonderful cloud-free day in one of the most beautiful cities in America. I plan lots of summertime rambles the next month or so in San Francisco. I try to remind myself — often — that people all over the world save their money all year long so that they can come vacation here for a short week. I really need to avail myself of all San Francisco offers more often. Try to be a tourist in my own town!
I was amazed to discover the huge greensward above Fort Mason, for example — I’m surprised to realize there are places I’ve never been in this city after living here over fifteen years. Are there locales where you live that you’ve never visited? Would this summer be a good time to check them out?
What plans do you have for this summertime? Are there nearby venues you’ll explore for the first time, or again? Have you any major expeditions planned? Is there fabulous big travel in your future, or little, but wonderful, travel?
Are you having a big faraway vacation or an exploratory stay-cation?
You’re not spending your summer stuck at your keyboard! Are you?
Let’s chat about summertime plans tonight….

About Firedoglake
teddy — that’s the perfect summer song. you described summer in san francisco so perfectly, it was like being back there again. thank you.
Alas…
Hi Teddy, glad you had a great day!
Hi Suzanne, how is the northwestern coast tonight?
We really think SF is giving us a wonderful time this summer, for her own selfish reasons. The City probably doesn’t want us to leave, although we are investigating our options.
Hey there newt!
Gotta pull at that chain, man. AFK is the way to be….
tis drizzly with rain on the way teddy. the rose festival is going on at waterfront park — folks have their umbrellas ready and don’t seem to be letting rain get in the way of fun teddy.
Rub it in, why don’t you…
I will free up to see clients, charge up and down the freeway into SF on occasion. My favorites are at Ft. Mason. I love it when they call.
That Blackpool streetcar really is the most fun thing ever. I’ve missed it several times, and had it coast past stops I was waiting at just because bad weather threatened. We saw it turn the corner and ran for it this time, although there was no need, since another streetcar was already ahead of it at the stop.
Then the driver went on break, of course. It takes two to operate, one up front handling the controls and another, like a conductor, helping people on and off at the door in the middle, checking fares.
Our friends in Portland have mentioned rain on FaceBook quite a bit this week, bemoaning the fact that they simply cannot catch a break in order to mow the lawn.
Teddy!
Still waiting for summer weather here. It has been too cool and wet for much rambling, though I have taken a few hikes. The places I would really like to go that I have not been is the high mountain lakes. So far I am off to a good start, but we will have to see if I can make it. It is about a 6-8 mile hike in to the lakes with a 2,000-4,000 foot gain in elevation. A bit of a challenge for a fat old man, but i am going to give it a shot.
its been a steady soggy but it is not constant rain. tis like spring all over again teddy
Ft Mason, I noticed yesterday, has become the home of the car-hood band shell that used to be set up in our neighborhood, in the Panhandle. Very cute little performance space, looks from up on the hill like an Apollo capsule half-buried in the parking lot. Then you realize all the different colored panels that make it up are old car hoods, welded together into a structure.
Very coot recycling/reusing.
Hello Dr (pause) Dick
i hope to do some local day vacations teddy — wanna drive up to mt hood and see timberline lodge, tootle up to seattle and see the market and i also wanna take the train up to vancouver bc.
i do hope to be able to drive to colorado and see stephanie and the phoenix area to see my mom — she turned 76 this month and i’ve not seen her since i moved up here.
mainly little trips like i did when i had the week off and went to astoria and to portland (and got to hang out with you)
I will definitely being going camping in Glacier National Park later this summer and hope to do some more camping in the area. So many beautiful places to camp so close by.
glacier is on my list — i want to see it while it still has glaciers *sigh*
One of my favorite places in the world.
spent a few weeks in montana, in the 3 forks area, back in early 80 visiting my then in-laws. gorgeous country and huge skies
Here’s a photo of it I took yesterday:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/21047123@N08/4655062786
I recall Montana very fondly from a trip my brother and I took from Vancouver to DC. Most of all I recall the speed limit, or effective lack of same.
that is so forking kewl
That has changed and we now actually have one, but it is 75 in most places on the highways.
That’s the building I work in, behind the ‘capsule’. Coolness.
The Gulf is faraway for me, presently…! ;-)
Do they use it for concerts, ever?
I consult in the offices where the newsletter production and events planning take place, always during the week. So I should know, but I don’t.
But it is quite a spot for it.
I remember the summer that Summer in the City came out. It was also the summer of Windy and Red Rubber Ball.
summer in sf is so iffy teddy — we all know what mark twain said…. and it was not unusual to be in the 50′s outside in sf when the rest of the bay area is sweltering in the 90′s… but when it is sunny with blue skies and white puffy clouds, tis magical
Are you headed there? What do you have planned?
san francisco nites
*heh* More Twain…
and
braggart :)
in my nostrils still lives the breath of flowers that perished twenty years ago
That’s a high recommendation, I’d say.
So far I’ve had no bites from any of the multiple orgs I’ve applied to in the Gulf to volunteer my services…! I’m still planning on taking military hops and meeting up with some Pups, Beach Bumz, and, Ranger Against War, at some point in my journey along the Red Neck Riviera…! *g*
Yes, Suz, I still haven’t sent that email…!
well, i hope to still be able to see ya while you are hoppin’
I think those multiple orgs. would like to be able to do something, but BP has the place locked down. They don’t want any lawsuits from cleanup.
I always did say you’d be the first pup on the list, eh…? McChord isn’t too far away is it…? *g*
I had not listened to the Lovin’ Spoonful in a very long time! That was great and John Sebastian has a great voice. I used to listen to them on the AM radio when I was a kid. Every town had a local AM station playing the top 40 and more.
Yes, that was the summer.
Yeah. They are being a bit quiet about it, but they are in full metal damage control mode these days, trying to limit their liability on multiple fronts.
If you go try and get water and soil samples from the ocean and the swamps to be tested.
That was the summer after my grandfather died. We were in Mpls. cleaning out his house. I sat in a chair and listened to those songs on a big old radio he had. It was also the summer of the 6-days war, I think it was called. 1966.
I was very surprised to see Legacy Media pick up on our own Michael Whitney’s focus on Cleanup Theatre, though. Both CBS and CNN talked on their primetime broadcasts about the crew brought in for the president’s visit. That is not something we would have seen under the Bush WH’s message control.
Of course, it is easy for the So-Called Liberal Media to come after anything that happens when a “Democrat” is president.
Oil, natural gas, dispersants and the farm chemicals that flow down from the Mississippi plus the normal pollution should interact chemically in very interesting ways.
I don’t trust BP or the government to tell us how. Kirk or Jim White should know a good lab to get the samples tested at.
Honestly, I’m willing and able to do anything…! I’ll be armed with a Flip cam and my laptop all the while, and, I do plan to blog my experiences along the way…! ;-)
Yep. Odd how they neglect to mention that it was the Bush administration’s gutting of the regulatory agencies and failure to enforce the existing statutes which is responsible for this clusterfuck.
Great quote at the beginning of this special on MSNBC — “There is something addicting about a secret.” from J Edgar Hoover. He oughta know, I guess…
I want to do some root digging nearby, very nearby. I actually don’t want ginseng, have some other herbs in mind, comfrey, stuff like that. Also want to go looking for some river rocks for my yard. I miss rocks.
I’m sure BP is fully aware that the toxic mess will end up damaging the health of any and all who work there, just like 9-11.
LOL. Better than anyone, I suppose.
Talk to Kirk and Jim White about what kind of samples and where from they want them. I am looking forward to seeing your diaries:)
I did spend a semester volunteering for NOAA’s estuarine studies on the Big Isle’s many estuaries…! ;-)
oooo that sounds like fun margot — one of these days, my landlady is gonna share her various walking trails with me and point out the various plants.
What river is near you, Margot?
Wow! Less than 6 degrees…
You know, Facebook has a BP page now where everyone who writes a comment about a post that has BP in it gets featured on that page. I wonder what’s going on…I’m going to be writing BfuckingP from now on.
Licking and Muskingum rivers.
Love it!
Time for me to toddle off. Take care all and have a splendid summer!
Flash drive save your stuff and keep a second flash drive hidden incase they accidently drop your equipment. a hidden in the hiking boot tape recorder with a good mike to pick up sound would be good.
A good cobbler could even make the hiding place water proof and place the recorder in a way so its easy to turn on with a causal tap from your other shoe.
Good your qualified :)
g’nite dr (pause) dick
See you in the summer, Dr
My mom has a big collection of smooth rocks that I think came from our 1968 trip out West, perhaps from one of the Great lakes.
Nite Dr. Dick.
Hi Teddy –
I didn’t know about the Blackpool but it’s now at the top of my list of Things to Do Now That We Have Moved back to Civilization. A trip to the redwoods (Humboldt) is what we have lined up for this summer, but we could easily spend the whole time going back to our favorite places in the City and the East Bay.
Aloha, Dr. D…!
Margot, I just went to FB and searched B*P and found the page you mention. I see my friends up there with the comments and links they have posted.
Greenpeace’s entries into the new BP logo. Lots of great entries.
Dayam, you’ve got it honed, eh…? ;-)
There is no end to the possibilities while vacationing in SF! I need to learn more about San Diego, my stomping grounds.
I am still promised a trip to the redwoods, as that is where Patrick grew up.
Lots of people spend a great deal of money to vacation in San Diego, too. A great place to start is your city’s tourism and travel bureau. Sometimes they have great deals offered to tourists only, but you can get on them as well.
you could head up to idylwild for a day trip…. or visit coronado island. there is always the san diego zoo :)
Those are great. What would be even better if BP just went out of business. More likely it will change its name to something like Xe.
I got a gift for thinking worse case scenario BP however is really topping every worse case scenario I can think of.
When the Paranoid start to sound like Naive Optimists its time to pull out all the stops.
Dang, I think of better uses for a good cobbler. Kind of partial to peach but apple will do.
It helps to have relatives coming who have never been to your town, or at least to pretend like you do.
I read The Wild Trees (highly recommend it) and now I am obsessed with going to see them, the biggest ones. I think I drove through Humboldt when I was a kid but it’s been a very long time.
Blackberry is said to be the most waterproof.
You’re probably right, I can’t see an iPhone making a decent cobbler.
101 through humbolt is gorgeous.. just one narrow winding lane each way, no center medium, and the most gorgeous light filtering through the trees. tis magical
Yes, that was the only time I ever went to the free museums all over DC, when people came to visit. Now I miss them every time I go to a museum here, and pay a lot, or on the free (and very crowded) days.
I kind of remember – I can’t wait to go see it again. If it wasn’t cold and rainy so often I could see myself living there.
*g*
OT: Unconfirmed, 10 dead on aid ships bound for Gaza, per twitterers.
i learned i don’t melt when wet, contrary to what ex#2 claimed
I saw that. Comes as no surprise, unfortunately.
I was always told I could expect to float.
What happened?
Wasn’t Cynthia McKinney on one of those boats? Coulda sworn I saw that somewhere . . .
I found something at “latest headlines.” Israel has no shame.
Don’t know.
There are undoubtedly those who will claim that Israel has every right to defend itself from hostile flotillas delivering humanitarian supplies.
siun is still live blogging it on her thread downstairs….
The only line I’m drawing in the sand is if they Nuke it…! I’m not going if they do nuke it before I fly…! 8-(
I think this is a Late Nite first two threads are active at the same time at this time of Nite.
Thanks – I am trying to read the comments in reverse order. Looks like the MSM is very slowly picking up the story.
Up to 10 now…? F*ck…! 8-(
You do know the crazy have been talking that since the first week and they have been talking that more lately.
That’s unconfirmed, on twitter.
naw… not a frequent occurrence but not a rare one either
Just plan to bring your own protective gear and breathing apparatus, I doubt you’ll be able to find it anywhere near the Gulf, or be provided it by BP. Unless of course you manage to show up when Barack does, and get all the gear you need for their Potemkin cleanup theatre.
and to wear it, no matter how hot ya get….
No way what are they saying no tv here. Have they mentioned Israel stopped boats full of food in international waters, shot 10 people, attacked 2 ships belonging to NATO members?
Any attack on 1 member of NATO is an attack on them all. lets See Obama UN veto this without losing Turkey in the NATO alliance.
Turkey say no U.S Military flights over their airspace American wounded from Iraq and maybe Afghanistan going to German Hospitals get screwed.
I have been away too much:)
news.gather.com has this:
There is one claim that 21 people were captured by the Israeli navy off of the ship Spirit of Humanity, including Nobel laureate Mairead Maguire and former US Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney.
I met Mairead Maguire last summer.
You won’t be able to do anything down there. BP has it all taken care of. And it is all pretend. Nothing will really be cleaned up. Maybe they know that the leak will be with us until August or forever. Why clean up when you will just have to do it again? I believe they have opened up something that cannot be healed.
tis all kabuki — just like our government
Not any more…! 8-(
*heh* I recall going on road marches in the Mojave, in full MOPP 4…! ‘Course, I was a little younger and dumber then…! ;-)
*heh* Oopsie…! Bwhahaha…! ;-)
Why!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cynthia_McKinney
They just arrested the Lady with the Biggest Stones in the Congress that I have ever seen. I feel sorry… for them
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cynthia_McKinney
She maybe a little crazy but thats what we need right now. I think we should support her next time she runs.
Obama needs a strong Black Role Model.:)
