As Richard M. Nixon could have told Barack Obama, any time you’re on the beach in dress clothes and the press is watching, it’s probably not good news.
In this case, in an embarrassingly small-ball version of “Message: I Care,” President Obama got himself caught on video explaining to Lafourche Parish President Charlotte Randolph how tar balls could be cleaned up manually from the beaches where they’ve washed up.
If Ms. Randolph asked the president, “Um… but what about the marshes around the corner drenched in floating oil, or the massive underwater plumes — how do we clean those up?!”, it didn’t make it into this clip.
But, to be fair, in his prepared remarks at the scene, Obama made a seemingly honest effort to recognize the grave toll of the catastrophe wrought by Big Oil, and how the government he heads is obligated to respond:
As I’ve said before, BP is the responsible party for this disaster. What that means is they’re legally responsible for stopping the leak and they’re financially responsible for the enormous damage that they’ve created. And we’re going to hold them accountable, along with any other party responsible for the initial explosion and loss of life on that platform.
But as I said yesterday, and as I repeated in the meeting that we just left, I ultimately take responsibility for solving this crisis. I’m the President and the buck stops with me. So I give the people of this community and the entire Gulf my word that we’re going to hold ourselves accountable to do whatever it takes for as long as it takes to stop this catastrophe, to defend our natural resources, to repair the damage, and to keep this region on its feet. Justice will be done for those whose lives have been upended by this disaster, for the families of those whose lives have been lost — that is a solemn pledge that I am making.
. . . To the people of the Gulf Coast: I know that you’ve weathered your fair share of trials and tragedy. I know there have been times where you’ve wondered if you were being asked to face them alone. I am here to tell you that you’re not alone. You will not be abandoned. You will not be left behind. The cameras at some point may leave; the media may get tired of the story; but we will not. We are on your side and we will see this through. We’re going to keep at this every day until the leak has stopped, until this coastline is clean, and your communities are made whole again. That’s my promise to you. And that is a promise on behalf of a nation. It is one that we will keep.
Fine, Mr. President; we’ll be watching to make sure you do.
And for myself, I acknowledge that an epic, slow-motion disaster like this is a tough situation to deal with, and I’m sure President Obama feels like he’s doing the best he can within the constraints he has to operate under… just like with everything else. It’s just painfully awkward to watch, that’s all.

Swopa!!!
I hope he gets pissed when he reads about the little dog-and-pony show the BP workers put on for him.
I hope so too.
I’m so relieved to hear BP is financially liable, Barry. Before they were poisoned those marshes and habitats were priceless, what are contaminated wetlands worth? I’ll be surprised if BP is charged more than pennies per acre.
i want him so pissed he actually does something (like an emergency declaration and moving in national guard troops to take over bp rent-a-cops) instead of just a sternly worded comment
I sure hope it comes as a surprise to him.
not a good sign if it isn’t a surprise to him.
what are contaminated wetlands worth?
I’m guessing BP will bring in the appraisal at somewhere around $14, including lunch.
Way to watch that bottom line, Tony. You’re on-track to pocket a nice 2010 bonus.
Only stupid people walk on the beach in dress shoes. And what’s with the kneeling down photo op?
It was an impotent photo op, Obama doesn’t care who the extras were. All style, no substance… the president and BP are kindred spirits.
I don’t care if he is pissed off or not, but I definitely want him aggressively pursuing an investigation pursuant to charges of negligent homicide against BP, as well as imposing the maximum penalties available under the EPA.
$14 and I’ll bet the check gets lost in the mail.
And maybe impounding some assets, too. Just grab BP by the financial nuts and squeeze.
What’s the stale date, six months? Yeah, I think we can make that happen…
ding!
I think a permanent ban on deep water drilling would be an overdue (and improbable) development.
While I am not thrilled with Obama and think the government could have pressured BP more aggressively and publicly, but what else is he supposed to do down there? This was always a gesture to the people of the region and to show he cares. His presence (or that of any president) adds nothing to the effort.
Imagine the howls from the Reichtards if he’d busted out his slippahs…! ;-)
Thank you, Swopa. It’s even more painful to watch knowing we’re signed up for a $60 billion Carnage Investment Fund in clean oil recovery from the sand and it’s pipeline. /s/ + deep sadness
At bare minimum there needs to be a thorough review of it and the establishment of strong safety protocols. If we cannot establish the same level of safety that we have with the shallow water rigs, which is pretty good over all, then we should definitely ban it.
Most importantly we need to aggressively enforce the existing regulations. Doing that will mean going after 30 years of Republican anti-regulation moles embedded in the federal bureaucracy and thoroughly cleaning house.
See my 16. He could admit that there has been no effective government oversight of corporations since Reagan, vow to change that and then actually follow through.
They’ll no doubt find something to howl about either way. It’s what they do.
Missed by THAT much! Tasty ale sliding down the bar at ya.
I would say that he has to some extent already done that and quite publicly. He even showed some temper when talking about it.
Mado!
Erm, ultimately he takes responsibility. That’s code for the “royal we” which in our case, not being a monarchy, means us.
Save your breath. There is nothing the President can do which RF cannot find fault with. Nothing at all. Do notice, however, RF rarely has suggestions that will fix anything.
Remember all the folks who thought they’d hit pay dirt buying up the land for casinos and had a railroad approved to get to it after Katrina? Tough Shit!
I read that there may be toxic rain from all the chemicals, that it will be more devastating than just the marshes, water, etc.
Anyone know any more about that?

If I thought he retained a single frayed strand of credibility I might be willing to give his sincerity the benefit of my doubt. Unfortunately in my estimation it snapped a long time ago.
I think that, along with the financial meltdown, this shows just how thoroughly the Republicans have degraded the regulatory bureaucracy in this country (FCC is another example). It is going to take years, maybe decades, to fix the damage that they have done. When the press talks about the government failures leading up to this I wish they would have the decency to point out whose fault that is.
I agree, his presence is a strain on the community and a waste of money. Especially when he doesn’t have the balls to put on the ugly clothes and head for the marshes where the Real Photographs are.
We expect too much from our leaders.
Nationalize BP. Seize their assets including the 25% of oil leases in the Gulf of Mexico.
Here’s the truth—if, Pres Obama, you’re waiting because you fear they won’t stop the gusher if you do this, that’s their biggest trump card. Fact is, I’m doubtful they can stop it. I wish they could.
Anyone else find it odd the price of gas is dropping when in every other year prices rise beginning with Memorial Day Weekend. Maybe the other oil companies are worried about the threat of BP’s nationalization and don’t want to raise the ire of an already upset population which doesn’t have its anger well-focused at the moment.
The fault is BP’s. Sure there was lousy agency oversight and corruption and we have an unquenchable thirst for their product but the well blew because of their greed and criminal negligence. If the president wants to take charge, really take charge, it starts with seizing BP’s assets.
At this point, I do not doubt his sincerity, just his competence. While I always knew he was a centrist, I have also come to acknowledge that he is rather more sympathetic to the corporations than I had thought (though still not a Landreiu, Lincoln, or Nelson full blown corporatist).
Here is a suggestion, the president can admit he’s in over his head and resign.
I cast my independent vote for Obama. I do not owe him any additional support when I believe that at no time since the inauguration has he acted in good faith. Admittedly, his party’s corporate sponsors probably feel differently.
WTF good could he do there, other than get in the way of the people doing the actual work? This was a necessary trip to reassure people that he cares and is paying attention, but he actually does more good staying in Washington and overseeing the federal response (including possible criminal proceedings).
From the Guardian:

For someone as intelligent as President Obama I just can’t understand how he’s letting himself get filmed walking on a beach in dress clothes picking at tiny droplets of oil when 10′s of thousands of gallons are all over the marshes. I hope he didn’t get any stains on his pretty white shirt. I remember him getting some new consultants awhile back and they should also be fired or resign for letting this pathetic photo opt take place.
I just can’t fathom how the President is so weak when he has an opportunity to connect with those from the Gulf and the Nation. We need a leader not an intellectual.
The Oil Gusher is not just a mess for the Gulf but for President Obama. This is not his Katrina but his Chernobyl.
Jason Leopold uncovered the fact that Bee Pee supplies 80% of the fuel required by DOD.
This “relationship” with Bee Pee will be termed a “National Security Asset” and Bee Pee will be protected as long as the “endless” wars go on …
We cannot disrupt the flow of fuel to the front (where ever it is, this week).

True, the regulatory bureaucracy won’t spring up magically with a wave of a wand…! It takes years to train the regulators to know what they’re regulating…! Similarly, an army can not be made overnight, like we’ve expected in Iraq and Afghanistan…! 8-(
Time for me to toddle off. Take care all.
I was just going to add, as long as I’m asking for things that should but won’t happen, how about we bring the troops home from Afghanistan and Iraq, deploy them to our Gulf.
Oh, and I want a Manhattan Project for alternative energy and climate change mitigation.
That’s hope and change I could really believe in. What we’re watching instead is simply kabuki.
g’nite dr dick
Sleep well. Think I will follow your lead. Best wishes to all.
g’nite rat
Aloha, rf and Dr. D…!
Alan Specter, Joe Lieberman, Ben Nelson, Olympia Snowe, Susan Collins, to name a few red flags. There’s so many others it looks like a festival.
That said, walking into Government Agencies after the Cheney, Addington, Bush years must’ve been like walking into an abandoned building with the sewer’s still active and overflowing, the electricity still on so who the hell knows where the “bad puddles” are…and scared very young people scurrying around on orders from the top.
Yeah, it just gets shittier the more you think on it.
We live near a refinery, so the thought of catastrophic events is always on the list of possibilities when the sirens go off. Or I should say, when a pitch black plume of smoke rises and NO sirens go off. For hours.
Color me confused. Did you guys see the Dylan Ratigan youtube on debbierlus’ seminal post? If this is true why isn’t it all over the news?
MODNOTE: link fixed
the doing nothing (no sirens etc) when everyone knows there is bad trouble takes scary to another level.
rachel had a segment tonight about there are now 3 plumes– the third is the big unknown but thought to be bigger than the two known ones
Yeah, even the local radio was silent during the Incident. Just old rock and roll, no problem 4 miles away as the crow flies. No alarms for Air Contamination, no talk at all for a full day. We heard through the locals before we heard through official channels.
Welcome to Amerika.
BP executives cut safety corners to turn a bigger profit. Then after the blow-out disaster and the deaths of eleven people, they low-balled the amount of oil actually spewing into the Gulf from the rupture while keeping hidden the live video feeds from a mile down for weeks, once again, so BP could turn a bigger profit by suppressing the cost of any future liability claims.
The only thing that might have mitigated this BP-made disaster is if a relief well had already been in place beside Deepwater Horizon when it blew, a safety measure required by Canada for drilling in the Arctic Circle. It wasn’t in place.
Because the oil is gushing so deep, it is dispersing wider than if it was closer to the surface, which will no doubt make the clean-up more difficult and longer-lasting.
We know that one presidency after another has deferred to Big Oil, so President Obama’s initial response (or seeming lack) is not surprising, with President Obama, the Interior Department and MMS depending on BP to handle the situation, even while BP was trying to cover all their bases, trying to cover their corporate asses, to keep their Big Oil profit engine running at full speed.
The clean-up will be long and costly…to someone. Maybe President Obama will succeed in holding BP accountable, exerting the full force of our federal government and every agency, seeking redress for any damage done, prosecuting where necessary for any crimes committed, after conducting a thorough investigation into all aspects of this Big Oil disaster, just like President Obama and his administration have used every federal government resource available, seeking redress for the damage done to our democracy and the rule of law by the previous Bush/Cheney administration, conducting thorough in-house investigations, prosecuting where necessary…..oh, right.
We should look forward and not dwell on the past. Maybe Congress will even give BP retroactive immunity like that given to the telecom companies. Ha. Ha.
Pardon me while I go in the other room and throw up. We are living in the dark ages but with a glaze of technicolor.
If you don’t wear a respirator you’re going to get really sick but if you do wear one, it looks bad for BP.
http://www.dailycomet.com/article/20100527/APN/1005271188?Title=7-Gulf-oil-spill-cleanup-workers-hospitalized
””Folks working those crews are not expected or trained to work in circumstances that would require respirators. If they were in that sort of situation they would be removed immediately,” Beaudo said.
Guidry also alleged that “when some individuals brought their own respirators, they were told by BP representatives on site that if they wore the respirators they would be released from the job.”
Beaudo responded: “I’m not aware that that has happened. It would be contradictory to our approach to safety.”‘
We know, but O’bama is an expert, as we discovered in the HCR slow moving epic disaster.
When you have ice water in your veins things tend to move very slowly.
This is ABSOLUTELY criminal. Too bad OSHA got killed. Too sick to wrap my brain around as a person who wore respirators for long periods. It’s part of suiting up for a toxic environment.
This is so wrong. And no clinics? Where’s the Red Cross? Out fundraising, probably.
They already have retroactive immunity,
1. The liability cap is $75 mill
2. The have bought and paid for the WHite House & Senate
3. They have the DoD by the balls
4. It’s the policy of this administration to look forward and not back
We need a leader not an
intellectualineffectual.There, fixed.
Why doesn’t Obama put on Hazmat gear and go down into the marshes? Why doesn’t Obama put on a wetsuit and dive into an oil plume? Why doesn’t Obama go down in a diving bell and plug the hole with Joe Biden and a bunch of sheets from the Lincoln Bedroom?
Do you realize how ridiculous some of these photo op criticisms sound? Or that there are probably legit security concerns? He went down, he made a fucking speech to reassure residents, he talked tough against BP, he made some promises that he may or may not (okay, probably not) keep.
Call him worse than Bush if you want, but Jesus, this petty carping and whining shit is unbearable.
just went over there. amazing clip. don’t miss it, folks.
Obama has as much power as I do, i.e. none. Even if he actually did care he’d be snuffed.
It’s nobody but us to save us, folks.
perfect description. as citizens united gains its full steam, the glaze will no doubt thin. i’m talking to god about this. i can’t see what else to do, personally.
Goodnight, all. I’m going to watch Meryl Streep’s ” It’s Complicated” and hope it’s as entertaining as I heard.
Have a good weekend.
g’nite openhope
Imho, you underestimate the power of the Real Photograph. A leader dresses in Oxfords to go to an envirinmental disaster and squats on the pristine beach with tiny tar balls.
Give me a break.
Obama has tiny tar balls? (ok, I cannot believe I said that)self editing.
yes, he has tiny tar balls. and there’s video evidence that he was fondling them, also.
it’s in a movie called “slick gulf porn”.
OMFG! You didn’t.
*banging head on desk* (and failing miserably at attempt to not laugh)
a girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do.
*laughing and laughing and laughing*
oh god.
oh god.
of dog.
F*$kin’ slap a BP baseball cap on his head and call it done.
I make a point to never dwell on the size of our leaders balls or vaginas.
Though I am prone to mentioning them from time to time. Just to see if the mods are awake when I mention the female anatomy. They are. :> There’s not many choices in female nouns as adjectives. Lot’s with the male though.
dayam, i sure did need that laugh, ladies — thanks
Feels good doesn’t it, Suz.
it did and was totally worth the looks exchanged between token and bailey — that she’s nuts i tell ya look
glad to oblige. teamwork, that’s what makes fdl special. and the mods…..

It’s too late for Obama to “be responsible” for this catastrophe, because it can’t be fixed. The Gulf of Halliburton will be a dead zone by the end of this year, just as the mid-term elections heat up.
The time to be responsible was before Pharma & Big Insurance & Wall Street & Big Oil bought and paid for every advantage for themselves at the expense of former middle class America.
Obama doesn’t care enough about this country to cut off the outright bribery by these terrorists, and that’s where the rubber really meets the road.
I would say that to cut off the outright bribery at this point in Corporate Coup D’Etat is not an option any of our elected officials have.
There are no heroes to save us from ourselves and the choices we made as a society/culture. We all did this together. Drive on. Me,too.
you folks let RF get away with all sorts of personal attacks; what gives?
I disagree that elected officials can’t cut out the outright bribery of a “Corporate Coup D’Etat”. Elected officials are making the CHOICE not to cut out the bribery because they care more about being in positions of political power than doing what is right for the citizens of this country.
When will we get a mass produced, affordable electric car with a change from “gas stations” to “electric stations”? For people who live in rural areas, it is often difficult to get from point A to B without a vehicle. So, until the auto industry changes their mindset, or a wealthy investor decides to start up a new electric auto company for mass production, “we the people” must wait.
This message is devoid of any truth.
And poorly conveyed, too.
Face it, Obama doesn’t give a rat-fuck about anything or anybody but himself and his corporatist buddy-masters.
I do, however, think we are going to see a perfect storm, literally and figuratively. I think hurricaine season, which this year is predicted to be a doozy, is going to rain oil on about 1/4 of the U.S., from the Gulf coast all the way up the eastern seaboard. Just before the November elections.
That outta be fun! Watch Democrats, desperate to save their own electoral asses, turn on Obama like a pack of dogs!
I’m getting aroused just thinking about the prospect.
I am tired of hearing about bipartisan commissions to study the problem and everything is under control. We don’t need Jedi mind tricks – we need some kick-ass light saber action.
What this country needs is more bipartisanship. R i g h t ! !
Republicans, the corporations, and a corrupt media have brought the U.S. to the brink of destruction. Obama has proven to be nothing more than an enabler.
Except that since 1995, with the passage of the Deep Water Royalty Relief Act, this has not been the case. In 2008, MMS claimed it collected $10 billion in royalties, except it did’t (remember that?). We need a wide-ranging review of all mineral resource extraction policies ASAP. Primates that we are, when one group on K Street saw some other industry getting breaks the next group wanted it. The ultimate absurdity is that we now have royalty relief for such industries as soda ash, which today mainly benefits Indian and Belgian shareholders. Giving away the resource endowment for nearly nothing also makes it harder to appreciate their true value and could damage resources of future importance (e.g. nanometals, rare earths).
The U.S. is reaping what it has sown. Maybe the Mayans were on to something.
Geez, that’s so fan-boyishly sad. You would never see that kind of apologetic treatment with Bush, and yet Obama is really no different than Bush. Oh wait, I forgot, his packaging comes with a different label, even though the models are the same Chinese-built toys from the same manufacturer.
Actually, we just need nonpartisanship.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
Well—–he did keep his word to make sure the bankers
were taken care of!
as for the rest of the Americans….
You are S.O.L. suckers!
oh, I forgot…
oil cos., defense contractors, politicians, lobbyists, hedge fund managers…
You’re all “Good to go!”
F**K THE REST OF YOU SUCKERS!
Your friend,
B.O.
HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!
I was impressed the President was seen only walking on the beach like nixon. Why not visit a place where people are caring for oil tarred animals, why only 3 or 4 hours to visit the largest oil spill of the century, when he made 4 political flights to campaign for BBox in trhe last month.
I understand he can’t be Mike Nelson/Captain Nemo but he should have seen the marshes and the standing oil. I’m willing to accept that might have been vetoed by the SS, but they should say so.
There should be a statement forthcoming about the fake work crew that was outed while his plane was in the air.
They may be playing it close since there is so much anacdotal evidence of criminal malfeasance, but if in a month, there isn’t it will be trouble.
Sadly, it is becoming easier for me to believe the President isn’t necessarily incompetent but is he really using a mirror when he is answering his daughter about the hole?
Many, including me, are waiting for a catharsis of emphatic, genuine outrage, about this event a focus for our collective anger at the corporate person who is suffocating the Gulf and wreaking havoc on the shore….I fear he will be blamed for the petrorain that will fall in the south if he dosen’t have a sense of urgency about the millions of barrels of petrochemicals that will be watering the crops when hurricane season blooms.
Our troubles have just begun
Thanks for the link, Mary… I don’t have a t.v. so am dependent on internet and posters like you to provide important links from various shows. Very interesting, and you’re right, everyone needs to see it.
