Thanks, BP!

Just how fast the oil is flowing has been the subject of intense speculation since the beginning, and numerous experts suggested the government estimate of 5,000 barrels (210,000 gallons) a day, also put forth by BP, was too low. In response, the government formed a task force called the Flow Rate Technical Group, which on Thursday raised that estimate to a range of 12,000 to 19,000.

Assuming the low estimate of 12,000 barrels of oil have been spilling since the Deepwater Horizon rig sank more than a month ago, the well as of today will have pumped out 440,000 barrels, or nearly 19 million gallons, surpassing the 11 million-gallon Exxon Valdez spill of 1989.

But remember — it’s important for us to be able to trust the oil industry.
