Two weeks ago, our CentCom commander took a break from meeting with Wali Kharzai to accept the annual Irving Kristol Award at a dinner hosted by the American Enterprise Institute.
While Petraeus portrays himself as removed from politics – noting he has not voted for many years – this foray into the heart of American conservatism is a striking step for a military leader who is supposed to stay outside the political fray.
Well, needless to say, it’s an enormous honor to be with you this evening especially given the many distinguished guests here this evening–Vice President Cheney, Governor Allen, Members of Congress, Ambassadors, serving and former cabinet officials, and many, many others–including a number of wounded warriors as well.
Indeed, I’m particularly pleased to have this opportunity because it gives me a chance to express my respect for AEI, an organization whose work I know not just by reputation–but also through first-hand experience…
… I feel particularly honored to receive an award that bears Irving Kristol’s name and why I welcome the opportunity to talk about ideas before an organization that is devoted to their development…
But while Irving Kristol may be gone, his influence will be felt for generations to come. He was, of course, one of our Nation’s foremost thinkers on a host of topics, from economics and religion to social welfare and foreign policy. He was a man of staggering intellect who possessed a view of human nature and American politics that has, in many respects, stood the test of time.
Petraeus’ speech has once again raised the possibility that he will run for President – and as ABC News noted:
The late Mr. Kristol’s son, Bill Kristol, noted in a tribute to the award’s three decades of honorees that none has ever gone on to become president. He then added to applause and laughter, “Perhaps this curious and glaring omission will be rectified.”
Rather than simply letting that moment pass, Petraeus said upon taking the podium that in mulling over the theme for his speech, “It never crossed my mind, Bill, to talk about what you were suggesting.”
The line was delivered with a smile.
At a time when even his COIN brethren are acknowledging “failures” in Afghanistan, one would think the CentCom commander had better things to do with his time – like actually putting an end to the increasing rate of civilian casualties in Afghanistan:
Nazir Ahmad says he heard gunfire coming from a guardhouse in the early hours of Friday, outside the large adobe compound he shares with nine other families. Thinking that thieves were trespassing, he and several men ran into the ink-black courtyard, where they were struck down by grenade explosions and gunfire. “They were shooting lasers,” says Ahmad, 35, confusing the laser-sights on his assailants’ weapons with actual bullets. Shrapnel flew into his cheek and hit his 18-month-old daughter in the back. A neighboring family fared even worse: within seconds, a father and four sons lay dead.

The Pentagon pushing studies that oil will reach $100 a barrel? Sounds like they are trying justify staying in Iraq.
The General is getting the Pentagon to do the work campaign workers do. Funny no mention of all the oil, oil speculators have stored in oil tankers waiting for the price to go up.
Remember when failing forward used to mean falling on ones sword?

High oil prices will be used to justify the war. Petraeus needs the war to keep going on or he needs to win the war.
The NeoCons need a foreign war to get back their Cred. They think with an Army General in the WH this time they can win.
They are playing their last card…and they know it.
What a great way for leaders to atone:)
Any word the Hague will start hearing war crime cases?
Tomorrow simple majority votes will pass billions of dollars for continued needless wars and occupations.
He’s running for president him and the Neocons will be very surprised if Petraeus has to settle for being Sarah’s VP. I wonder if he could take orders from a woman?
Outside the blogs Petraeus is not getting any press even from the Righties.
Why maybe talking about 2 wars still not won after 9 years is too much shit for even the righty blogs to serve the 20%ers dressed up with happy talk.
The Neocons however eat it up.
It sounds like a regular neocon circle jerk Petraeus attended. What is important to remember is that while Petraeus may be anathema to most of us he is just Obama’s kind of guy. Petraeus would make a perfectly dreadful President. At heart, he’s Sarah Palin with stars. But that’s not the point. A Petraeus-Obama matchup would just be another pseudo-fight where no matter what a corporatist wins and we lose.
What I want to know is where is his resignation for entering into politics?? BO should grow some and fire in disgrace his future opponent!
Ya know just like a wingnut prez would do….
Well we won’t get better choices from any GOP candidate Sarah, Mitt, Newt, Jeb, Petraeus, we need a primary challenge for Obama.
The price of oil in the world given current economic conditions should be in the $30-$35/bbl area. The reason it isn’t is because Goldman, its subsidiary J Aron, and other players like Barclays game the futures markets doubling the price and more. They have been doing this since 2004. If the DOD wants to do something about oil prices it could do a lot more by airstrikes on Goldman and J Aron than it has done in either Iraq or Afghanistan.
He is playing politics plus he hasn’t won the wars. He certainly was given every chance. Plus if we pull the troops out after congress approves the money Obama could have the army use the funds to create jobs.
Armies built roads in Roman times our whole infrastructure needs to be repaired.
The GOP complains we point out Bush took Afghan money and troops and sent them to invade Iraq letting Ossama go. Fixing America is much less a fast one.
Agreed the front pagers should cover this more every American recession since WW2 has been linked in whole or in part to high oil prices.
I agree. I pointed out earlier today that I had begun talking about a progressive party to counter Democrats before the November 2008 election. Nothing happened. People said the first order of business was to defeat McCain. But then nothing happened during Obama’s first year in office. We are too late to primary and run candidates in this election cycle. We need to start lining up candidates to run against Obama and most Democrats in 2012. But I still don’t see any movement in that direction.
Our candidates not Rahm’s are wining I think that shows interest from the voters. We need to run more candidates but getting a real Lefty Presidential candidate would be tough.
Obama vs. Petraeus would be a fight between two moderate Republicans, and it’s not clear to me that Petraeus comes out worse in that match-up. Don’t get me wrong–I’m not saying he’d be significantly better (or, for that matter, much different). But we’re facing serious problems that Obama doesn’t seem able or willing to confront. If Petraeus has stuff he wants to say, I’m willing to listen. And I wouldn’t have said that even six months ago.
2012 could well be a year for a Perot style candidacy.
How the hell does does a joke from William Kristol raise speculation that Petraeus is going to run for president?
Is Siun relying on Kristol’s track record in picking winning candidates for president or something?
Or does being selected for the award qualify as candidacy?
Maybe not so much..
He won’t have anything to say you want to hear not if the Neocons are sliding up to him expect Fear,Hate and Greed toward dark, people, Gays etc.
Expect government cuts and tax breaks. I do wonder what Hope the GOP will sell during the election. So far they have all run as Reagan but every year they get further from the message of hope.
The GOP’s problem no hope the closet they got was Newt its sad when the Contract on America was the best the GOP could come up with for Hope.
Didn’t he help create Sarah granted she is an even bigger joke than he is but she is the only GOPer getting press for something besides a sex scandal and wanting to roll back civil rights.
Rand Paul is her only true worry. That and Mitt in a dark alley.
2011
Sarah Palin?
The carping about Petraeus accepting an award is just more crap for the pile.
Until you read that Petraeus resigned his commission, it’s a waste of space.
Get up on the wrong side of bed again this morning?
Besides, Obama needs him to first prosecute the Iran squeeze.
“DEBKAfile’s military sources report a decision by the Obama administration to boost US military strength in the Mediterranean and Persian Gulf regions in the short term with an extra air and naval strike forces and 6,000 Marine and sea combatants. Carrier Strike Group 10, headed by the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier, sails out of the US Navy base at Norfolk, Virginia Friday, May 21. On arrival, it will raise the number of US carriers off Iranian shores to two. Up until now, President Barack Obama kept just one aircraft carrier stationed off the coast of Iran, the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower in the Arabian Sea, in pursuit of his policy of diplomatic engagement with Tehran.
For the first time, too, the US force opposite Iran will be joined by a German warship, the frigate FGS Hessen, operating under American command.
t is also the first time that Obama, since taking office 14 months ago, is sending military reinforcements to the Persian Gulf. Our military sources have learned that the USS Truman is just the first element of the new buildup of US resources around Iran. It will take place over the next three months, reaching peak level in late July and early August. By then, the Pentagon plans to have at least 4 or 5 US aircraft carriers visible from Iranian shores…”
slept late. thx for asking, but I’m feeling pretty good.
how are you?
enjoyed your video link to the woman losing her birthday cake.
David Petraeus shouldn’t be swanning around with these war criminals, he should be meeting with his own attorneys to build a defense to his own war crimes charges. It’s ludicrous that Obama lets him get away with this kind of politicking — and the neocons are rubbing Obama’s nose in it.
Man’s gotta grow a pair.
Just what we need–a lying Neocon General with a questionable record of success as President of the US.
What a brilliant idea—not.
Teddy Partridge is upstairs!
Sunday Late Night: OmbudsAndy Wonders What Women Want in a WaPo
Teddy, do dish up all these war crimes that you just know Petraeus committed.
thot you shood no..
whew, thanks!
that’s a relief.
Man, every time I come in here people are batting around the idea of primarying Obama in 2012. How do you primary a president that’s got over 50 percent approval? How do you plan to get your guy or girl elected without splitting the Democratic vote and clearing a path to victory for Petraeus or someone worse? I mean, is there any real kind of game plan here, or are you guys just blowing smoke?
As far as I can tell, it’s either Obama or a crazy-ass Republican for the next six years. Unless things shift dramatically, I’d say we start finding ways to work with what we have.
I will not vote for the little creep again. His approval is 48% approve, 45% disapprove. Someone else can certainly do better than that, and they would have my vote for starters.
I’m looking forward to 2012.
: )
The only thing worse than a Republican is a turn-coat Democrat like Obama. I don’t care if a Repug wins because there isn’t any discernible difference between the parties.
Petraeus will not run for President this time out, for one simple reason. Obama boxed him in last fall, when he delayed signing off on the Afghanistan policy report, and forced the brass to go back to the drawing boards until they came up with something that looked like more than a Hail Mary. Petraeus and McChrystal, both of whom have Pres ambitions had to sign off on that policy. They would undoubtedly like to double-cross Obama, but it will not be possible. Checkmate.
Petraeus giving a deep bow in Cheney’s direction doesn’t sound so moderate to me. Let’s see, Cheney got us into these perpetual wars and Petraeus is fighting them, so what I guess everyone can agree is that war is good for business! Hooray war! (Cue chants of U S A! U S A!)
what deep bow in Cheney’s direction?
are you confusing mentioning him as being in attendance with some kind of endorsement of Cheney’s policies?
