Hey, again, Suz. Evening CTuttle!
Tearjerker follow-up on the little girl who worried about her mom being deported with Michelle Obama yesterday.
In an interview conducted in Spanish after the event, the 7-year old girl told a reporter: “I’m a big girl and I don’t want to be left with nothing. I could almost die.”
“My mommy wants papers so that she can be here legally, so that she doesn’t have to go to Peru,” the girl said (according to a rough translation by the bilingual Eye.)
still gonna have bands of showers moving through for a few days but no 58mph gusts :) i was able to put the birdfeeder on its hook for a bit this afternoon.
kicking back and hanging out :) tomorrow i am forced to head into town to get groceries and run errands but am feeling pretty good about being able to procrastinate doing that for 5 days…
hey et — i’ve never been able to figure it out — some things are a hit one day and no one wants to talk about it another. been enjoying your pics over at your place
Hi Suz nice tunes. Nahant sent his hawk pictures Pretty cool neighbors. i feel that way about Osprey just awesome predators. Getting into nightly meds as in meditation, Giving the big Kahuna the opportunity to drop in. And good to quite the mind. Happy wishes to all and goodnight,
Riki Ott calling in to Shannyn Moore’s radio show today, regarding a number of things: dispersants, the press gag, and working with individual victims on the Gulf. She’s over at Mobile Bay, where response workers are having severe reactions to the toxic chemicals. Demanding much more action from Obama.
Thanks Larue… I am fortunate they keep giving me opportunities to shoot some great shots.. Seems I am making a new flying friend… She trusted me to fly even closer to me.. I was amazed.. she was sitting on the wire not 15″ from me and kept giving me her call and posing for her pictures… .. it went on for at least 10-15 min… I won’t forget that encounter…
Dow down 376, oil still spillin’ in the Gulf, MSM calling Sestak a “progressive,” Obama still supporting Blanche Lincoln, ruing the loss of Arlen Specter and all the rest of the same shit on a different day.
had a little birdie fly into the house yesterday. after beating her wings against the windowpane, she let me gently cup my hands around her and when i opened my hands once outside, she flew off
Riki is doing a phenomenal job down there. There should be 5,000 people helping here. There might be three or four. Maybe she should rename what she is doing the Gulf Tea Party or some fucking thing.
Jeepers, guys, I’m down there on the bottom of prevthread, responding with all sorts of wonderful bon mots and personal stories, including a funny and heartfelt apology to our formerly GOP hostess, and you all have Moved. The. Fuck. On.
Wow, Dow is bad, there goes what’s left of my 401K.
Oil, I gotta catch up from today . .
Obama, well, I’m more than disappointed.
But he can’t save Blanched in June.
He either sinks himself and the party, or he realizes we drive him left of where he wants to be.
’10 in November is NO giveaway to Dem’s, despite what the progs are saying (cuz GOP is so bad).
And by ’12? If Obama has NOT moved left, and sold out some of his corporate pals, well, he and what’s left of the Dem’s could very well be swept out in a very, very bitter buyers remorse effort on the part of all the country’s voters, regardless of their party affiliation.
And they think they’re impervious to it, too, the arrogant fucks.
Thank you, Edward Teller. I’ll listen to it tomorrow morning with my parents. Dad was talking about the burning sensations people are feeling on their skin, but we didn’t go any deeper.. I just briefly heard a blanket of oil is moving into the marshlands, with Bobby Jindal doing a photo-op. Don’t have the heart for that tonight either. Tomorrow is another day…….
no..no..no..no..no..no..no..no…….
We have thick curtains in our bedroom, over the window and deck patio doors. It bothers Ms ET more than me. It is the lack of light in winter that bothers me.
Disappointed my Seminal post didn’t make the recommended diaries today -Time for Sun City 2010. What did I do wrong?
If you’re asking the question seriously, rather than just using it as a lament (I can’t tell without inflection), then I’d say
1. Today you’re up against environmental devastation and economic devastation financial “reform.”
2. I’d say that for a piece introducing a relatively new (to here) idea, it was a little long. Just like planting a seed in a garden, if you’re into getting the attention of news-scanners then a long piece only works after the seed of idea itself has been planted and had time to germinate in their consciousness.
I thought it was an interesting and well-written piece, and it was good to see some attention to that issue finally make its way to FDL.
Damn, I was hoping Cantwell and the other one could stave off a cloture vote.
Last I saw the finreg reform was as big a POS giveaway as bank/fin reform and HC reform.
Le sigh, I’ll catch up to it all tomorrow.
Right now, I’m enjoying some merlot, the smell of the wood fire smoke on me and my instrument cases behind me, and the tunes we picked and sang . . . I’ve missed a few in the past month, need to get to them all.
As much as I hate to go out at nights anymore, what I learn, share and come home with in ‘feeling’ from sanging with others is such a lift I can’t mentally afford to miss it!!! *G*
And they think they’re impervious to it, too, the arrogant fucks
They do think they’re impervious to it. Specter’s defeat (quite resounding, too), and Halter’s very strong showing are serious signs of the old order breaking down, but the Obama administration is doubling down on the old one, i.e. Lincoln.
It doesn’t matter if the dems or the ‘pukes are in power. There is so little difference any more, it’s useless even voting these days. Whether there’s a D or an R in front of the candidate’s name, you’re voting for the same person, just in a different body.
Hey,Suzanne, we are doing good. Maria Cantwell is standing as one of two civil servants in the senate to demand tougher FinReg. I didn’t have time today to call her offices but I will tomorrow.
We had another great community dinner before our council meeting. Starting to talk like calm grown-ups around here. It’s really inspiring to watch the conversation tone shift.
I have no clock anymore, Suz. It’s the weirdest thing. Who knows what time of the day or night I’ll wake up? Today is was 3:30AM, but tomorrow it could be 10:00 AM. The beauty of retirement!
A major artist was on the telephone with the DJ, 15 minutes.
About TN/Nashville, etc. I’m trying to hook her up with a Seminal Diary, and maybe a live blog interview, etc.
My point being, I heard from a bird (wink) that FDL is working with Riki maybe . . . I hope she front pages soon, does a live bloggy, and solicits help . . . . .
Maybe I need to get my bluegrass contacts more involved in spreading the word and call for volunteers to LA, although from what it sounds like, ya gotta be HASWOP certified, and BP and other officials are running people off . . . if one WANTS to volunteer, it seems getting in to do so is being blocked and if you DO get in, there’s no way to really help. They’s all poor, disrupted and beat from Katrina still, not much to share with others coming in and no way to really help vols get into the oil action . . .
Maybe with Riki down there, avenues will soon open up for folks to get involved in many more ways. The Obama Admin has to change directions here, or it’s gonna go down in flames country wide as more and more corruption and ongoing bad shit is revealed and exposed to the light of the truth.
Just a note to thank the FDL mods……there was a nasty post at the Seminal a couple of days ago….I was shocked by the nastiness. By the time I requested MOD cleanup for the throwup in the lobby, ET had also commented on the nastiness……….and in no time, the offending post was scrubbed. Made me proud. I read at Common Dreams a lot….and they, too, scrub off the graffiti quickly. Good work, Mods.
That, and failure to deal with Deepwater is gonna kill them in November, and in ’12. Not to mention the blowback from the POS fin reform when the econ tanks . . . in ’11 (I follow Hugh, I concur with him about that).
Bless ya, nice to see ya out, don’t let it get ya down too much, we need every prog boot and booty available for the duration . . ;-) Best to ya and yours and any critters that may own ya ( can’t keep track of all Puppers).
Spectacular day today. Bands of showers moving through but the radar showed an area SW of Portland relatively clear, so we took a trip there to the Heritage Rose Gardens. Spectacular all around. We are now on the backside of the storm track and it is awesome! The roses, breathtaking, and if that isn’t enough, we spotted a nesting pair of Osprey(I think) on a telephone pole. I have never attempted to photograph birds until this year, and this pair really paid off. One inflight shot in particular is worth the entire trip!
Birds, roses, thunderheads, my oh, my!
I love the weather radar sites. Without them, I would not have known to go there today.
Oh, lordy. I hope we’re not there yet. There seems to be to be a very distinct difference between most dems and republicans. Check all of the votes for the last year. The republicans are the party of NO following their leader, Rush Limbaugh. (NYT story I can’t find right now!)
I have petroleum allergies. Sensitive but not acute. Gasoline fumes can make me sick in an embarrassingly short time.
I just can’t stand the wasteland moving forcefully into vibrant environments. While our government does…thinks about doing…bickers about blame,..?
I’ve seen fucked, and we are there, imho.
I’m doing fine, Suzanne. Loveing grandmotherdom. My first girl just got back from presenting at a philosophy conference in Beijing……took her infant along and was amazed by the interest in an infant. Turns out that Chinese do not take their infants out for months or years. Amazed they were that an American (read: white kid) was being toted around Beijing in a Mobey (wrap thing.) Fascinating.
Hi Suz, doin’ reasonably well – thanks for asking. How are you?
Though I did have the misfortune of overhearing part of tonight’s “Two Hours’ Hate” (i.e., Olbermann and Maddow). A nightly spectacle of unrestrained prejudice and hatred which I find very unpleasant.
I continue to be happy that things continue to get worse in the world – because like the escalating pain of a disease that needs treatment and a change of lifestyle, things getting worse means people might eventually start to do something to make things better.
I found that Limbaugh story very annoying. I’m sick of fawning stories about how powerful he is. If he is powerful and we think he is dangerous we make him toxic and make help him destroy himself.
That is how you get rid of him. But nobody thinks he is dangerous enough to do what it takes.
See, I don’t think Olberman and Maddow are haters, I just think they are truth tellers in jester suits and I would so love it if they would dial it back by huge degrees and just, for g-d’s sake, report! But I do think they put truth out there. Where are you getting truth???
I think you just nailed a great new “support” group theme. Right on, dude!
Healing through utter rot. The Lazarus Method.
I’m thinking you might have something here.
> Actually, fdl is fairly progressive when it comes to rationally discussing Palestinian rights.
Yeah, Siun’s coverage of the slaughter in Gaza last year comes to mind.
But it’s not that it’s not discussed rationally. Though I would argue that rational discussion about barbarism, ethnic cleansing and slaughter is a huge part of the problem. Seeing something, realizing it’s wrong enough to lament and wring hands about it, but then do nothing to change it – hmm, sound like any current Presidents we know? – is essentially complicity. (BTW, that’s why we have a President who says anything and does nothing – because that’s a reflection of us.)
It’s that it doesn’t get discussed very much. So the seeds don’t get watered enough to take root and grow larger.
I think if you were to more regularly do shorter pieces about the various boycotts (cultural and economic) that would eventually change.
I sure do remember. 300 boats were towed to New Orleans from around LA to rescue folks. They were turned back. And the Blackwater fuckheads were patrolling the rich people’s neighborhoods.
Major screw-up on Obama’s part. If he did something to try to help fix the situation, what was it? True, he separated the jobs in MMS, but that a little after the fact.
I’m wondering if there is just nothing that can be done. I’m sure Obama wouldn’t intentionally let this mess continue. Nobody knows what to do. All we know for sure is that there should be no further offshore drilling.
I’m thinking the Russians were right when they suggested that we nuke the damn thing.
one of the things i like about fdl is the variety of music. i’ve had threads that had classical, head banging metal, jazz, and rock in the comments. i favor the blues but i like good music, no matter the genre.
I continue to be happy that things continue to get worse in the world – because like the escalating pain of a disease that needs treatment and a change of lifestyle, things getting worse means people might eventually start to do something to make things better.
And Rachel (who gets trashed on FDL quite a bit) took on Rand Paul and then gave a great follow up tonight. Who else is doing that? She took on C Street. Who else did that? She isn’t totally smooth, but she’s smart and pretty tough and just keeps on truckin’. God love her!
I asked my daughter to see if she could get a read on the fascination with her 3-month old son. She found that the children who were fascinated by him hadn’t seen infants (the one child thing makes for pretty limited experience) — and the fact that children were not taken out made my grandson kind of an oddity.
They think they’re telling the truth, I’d expect. But since they don’t seem to be aware of projection, what they’re really doing when telling us about the evils of the target du jour is just telling us about themselves.
Simply listen to what they say about those who are to be hated (usually Republicans, but more generally anyone with whom they disagree, and especially anyone who has dared to disagree with them personally).
And now imagine similar things said with similar intensity, about some other group – let’s say, black people. (Or if you want to get nitpicky about it and go for something that’s more of a value than a body characteristic, people who like black people.)
Not so pretty, is it?
Hatred is hatred is hatred. It’s not OK to hate some group just because it’s popular with one’s viewers. Actually, it is OK, it’s just hypocritical to criticize someone else for being hateful and prejudiced when that’s what one is doing oneself.
Prejudice and hatred of anything, even prejudice and hatred, is still prejudice and hatred.
The only way out of prejudice and hatred is tolerance and love.
And also note their hatred isn’t spread evenly – there are very specific groups, night after night, that are the targets, even if they have nothing specific to do with the issue. For example, at the beginning of the Deepwater disaster, rather than talk about what Obama needed to be doing (and wasn’t), Olbermann went on and on and on about how Sarah Palin was an idiot. It’s hatred and prejudice and also propaganda – what nauseating swill.
It’s OK that they’re hateful and prejudiced, because if I’m going to tolerate and love I have to love even that. It even serves a reasonable function because it’s a great example of what not to be like. I just don’t prefer it.
Loving things I like is easy.
It’s the ability to love that which I don’t like that’s the real transcendence.
Oooh, I’m so jealous I can’t listen. Now I know you’re talking about “it’s a Beautiful Day”. Many great times at their concerts. Had the opportunity to meet David LaFlamme and Patti Santos at a reunion of The Family Dog at the old, closed Fillmore West. Some fucking wanker spiked a bowl of Sangria with blotter acid for old times sake. I didn’t get the message. I never got to thank them for all their great music because flowers started growing out of the walls. Ahhh, misbegotten youth.
I think letting Limbaugh continue in his insanity is the best thing ever for us. I really do. He has, what, 2 million listeners? That’s such a fraction of our population. Plus, I’m guessing that part of his audience is laughing at him as part of their entertainment. I listen to him sometimes in my car just to see what venom he’s spewing. Beck and Hannity have the same listeners would be my guess.
But you’re absolutely right on calling out the advertisers. That is important and admirable work.
Well, actually, she is flappable….which makes me crazy! She didn’t hold Rand(y) Paul to account for suggesting that carrying a gun into a bar was in some way the same as wearing black skin or ladyparts into to bar, ya know? But I do think she is doing the best she can against the loonies.
Hi Suz, hi pups, just a drive by because it is so late here, and I can’t even believe I’m still up…headed to bed now, but I wanted to drop this little gem for Larue:
I hear you. I’m not crazy about the ‘drama’ — but I do like that Olberman and Maddow take things on. I do wish they would dial it badk and become real reporters, and I really do not like the schtick, but I do like that they are willing to take things on. If Rachel Maddow didn’t ‘do’ Rand Paul with such energy, who would have?
As I wrote above, Riki has way too much to do. She has to leave the Gulf coast tomorrow or Saturday, but will be back down there. Jane is in touch with her.
Well I gotta admit, I noticed not too long after the erection and coronation that Olbie and Rache sure as shit got muzzled to death. And not to stray too far from the corp lines since.
But with Rand Paul, he’s a threat to the corp status . . . so, he’s ok to tag hard.
But by and large, even Dylan Ratigan is a bit muzzled on some issues.
So, I can quite understand FDL Pups for being disappointed in Olbie, Rache, and all of our ‘prog’ media folks.
And in reality, they ain’t proggy . . . they are as proggy as the corps that own the networks let them be proggy.
I think we should just start showcasing his “stuff’ at every opportunity. His penthouse is not what the gun totin’, freedom lovin’, brown people hatin’, women degradin’ men want to see. It’s so over-designed.
And the men love his talk. We’ve protested on opposing corners of a major intersection in small town America for a huge part of my children’s lives. Always 3 times more anti-war then Tea Baggers. Every damn Sunday this spectacle goes on. They LOVE Rush. If they actually saw the crap he owns I think they’d be worried. They’re not that kind of guy.
Yeah, Chet Helms, once he got burnt by Bill Graham he split and started Family Dog at The Avalon, and at Playland out on Ocean Beach.
What a story you have!!!
Thanks for sharing it!
Heh, I recall making home made Sangria in those days, it was all the rage (without the acid, of course).
We’d start with Red Mountain or Spanada . . . lol. Smuggle in gallon jugs of either to shows, wrapped in sleeping bags cuz back then they let bags in!!! Not to mention all the weed, hash, hash oil . . . sigh. lol
I had to leave for a while. We just had a security system installed.
We were vandalized last winter – my Subaru’s oil was drained, the oil warning light disconnected. Cost me $3,500.00. Palinbots photographed the house, made weird calls to my work and the house.
Who’s trashing Rachel? Who? There couldn’t be a better representative of our cause.
Yeah, Amy Goodman? (can’t think!) is really good, but most people still watch TV, they don’t watch online. Frankly, I don’t. Remember GRIT TV here? Who has time to watch all day? I choose to watch MSNBC at the end of the day to see analysis of the day’s news. I don’t watch for breaking news anymore. I like the back and forth Tweety has, I love the fact that I get new info and brilliant analysis from Rachel.
Four police shot in Eastern Arkansas, the first two killed by a pair of AK-47 wielding men after pulling over a van with Ohio plates in a possible drug stop. Later the police chief father of the was also shot along with a game department ranger.
The van has been traced to a Aryan Brotherhood Christian Identity church called the “House of Gods” that was once led by racist Harold Ray Redfeairn.
Well Limbaughs audience is about 30 million. Hannity is 13.5.
Your view is shared by many. I had a sad conversation with my mother the other night and she said that I should get out of “politics”. I don’t think of what I do as politics. I see it more as ethics.
But she knows the price I’ve paid for
doing my work, both emotional and financially and thinks that if I do something else I won’t be so bummed. It’s hard to get her to understand what I have done and do.
She listens to Rush and repeats his nonsense. She then was bemoning how decisive “politics” is. It is people like Rush whose jobit is to keep the division hot and constant. It is drama and it has a purpose. To entertain, yes. Bit also to convince, pursuade and excuse people’s worst selves. The self that is about greed covered by nationalism.
Racism covered by conseratism.
You have a good point. It becomes a Gladiator thang as opposed to real communication. Too much Them vs US. And yet, the gauntlet has been dropped by the Global Corporate Party. What are we to do?
I would start with fixing the MAJOR problems in our election system. Said Don Quixote.
Here is something I wrote in response to a Rush story over at Salon. I’ve put some thought into this.
I told them “I have some experience in having an impact on right wing radio hosts. I’m pretty confident that if someone was willing to pay for it they could drive him off the air.
There are a lot of big money interests that keep Rush afloat. It’s not the conseratives that keep him on the air, it’s platitude free speech liberals. They aren’t willing to do what it takes to get him off the air. They are the people who say, “I don’t like what he has to say, but I’ll defend to the death his right to say it.” To those people I say, “Really? Really? What if he told his listeners they should kill the President? And he did it on broadcast radio?”
I’m pretty confident I could put together a plan that would make Rush a liability instead of an asset. He would become the Michael Vick of broadcasting. But I doubt anyone would pay to enact the plan.
The plan is simple in case anyone wants to enact it. It includes getting Rush to talk more to uncontrolled audiences, following up on his DR visits, and looking at his current drug use.
Only Rush’s own words and actions can bring down Rush. But we could facilitate the fall if we wanted to. I don’t think anyone wants to because he is too useful and profitable.
Who is willing to spend the money it would take to facilitate his fall?
I think Rush is bad for the country. But is he bad enough for this country to convince people on the left to take steps to help him destroy himself?
Who is he hurting enough who will pay me and a few others to enact the “Rush Self Destruction Plan”? You know the right spent at least 12 million to get rid of Clinton with the Arkansas project. Anyone willing to spend $1.2 million on Rush?
I don’t think so. Some money is being spent to “document the atrocities” but the real work would be to uncover, expose and promote the illegal and immoral things he does. We wouldn’t have to make stuff up, but we would need to treat him like he is dangerous, not an innocuous entertainer.
The other step would be to tie his illegal and immoral actions to the people funding him so they will run away like Tiger’s sponsors. And the people who will be doing the condemning will be the very people who supported him.
To get what I’d consider accurate news, one needs to do a few things, and also understand a few things.
1. The mainstream media is just the marketing department of the single, larger entity that is business/government/media. It’s thus unreasonable to expect it to ever portray events other than with a view that supports the ruling class status quo.
This means I don’t expect them to report on the reasons for events and what they mean in any way I’d consider complete. I do watch from time to time to see what the view is like from inside that perspective. This is an important point. I don’t say that what they’re saying is intentionally wrong or misleading – it’s a really helpful thing to lead with the assumption that what someone is saying is true from within their limited and potentially warped point of view. That’s how I listen to Gibbs’ press gaggles, for example. Knowing that what seem to clearly be lies from the outside may actually be considered the truth from inside their world has great analytical and predictive value the next time they say anything. This is true whether it’s Obama and Gibbs, or Olbermann and Maddow, or Bush and Cheney, or people here at FDL.
2. I know that to get a better view of anything I need to look at it from multiple perspectives. This is as true with the news as it is with something of beauty or a person. So I look around and read and listen to a bunch of different things, and see which pieces line up and which seem to be at odds. I also don’t just throw something out because it seems an outlier. (Sometimes what appear to be outliers are the essential truths that the main group is too blind to see.) I just look at it all as this is the way this group of people, together, see the world.
3. Finally, and most important, I accept that what I see in the world is a reflection of me. The world is infinite – so why did I see or think or say that? It’s because that’s what my psyche has filtered out from the world and wants me to see, because it’s telling me something important about me.
The degree to which I have an emotional reaction to it is a measure of how aware of it inside my psyche. So, for example, I can recognize Olbermann and Maddow’s hatred and prejudice because I recognize in myself that I can be hateful and prejudiced. And it’s exactly that humility that allows me to see it in them and not overreact to it.
This leads us naturally into a discussion of consciousness. The most I’ll say for now is that consciousness is self-similar (think fractal), which means it behaves the same way regardless of scale. That means that what I know about how people work is just as applicable to how groups or countries work. And because what I see in the world is a reflection of me, what I see in the world (e.g., Obama’s seduction of the American people) is a reflection of how I myself must also use seduction somehow – otherwise I wouldn’t be able to see it at all. And because it works the other direction, if I want Obama to say less and do more, I have to do the same myself.
All parts reflect the single whole. See what I want to change in the world, then change it in myself.
Understand that what we’re really talking about here in your question is not just “where do you get your news,” but more broadly, “how do I see my world better and more clearly?”
That’s a beautiful question. It’s the sign you’re waking up. And since you represent the world, it’s the sign the world is waking up, too.
I hope I’ve been able to say a few things that will help you as you begin to use your new eyes.
P.S. Ask me more if you want to know more. It’s hard to squeeze a manual for how to live the second half of a life into an FDL comment…. ;-)
“Millions of Americans arrested for but not convicted of crimes will likely have their DNA forcibly extracted and added to a national database, according to a bill approved by the US House of Representatives on Tuesday. By a 357 to 32 vote, the House approved legislation that will pay state governments to require DNA samples, which could mean drawing blood with a needle, from adults ‘arrested for’ certain serious crimes. Not one Democrat voted against the database measure, which would hand out about $75 million to states that agree to make such testing mandatory. … But civil libertarians say DNA samples should be required only from people who have been convicted of crimes, and argue that if there is probable cause to believe that someone is involved in a crime, a judge can sign a warrant allowing a blood sample or cheek swab to be forcibly extracted.”
Thanks Democrats, thanks ‘Progressives’! Way to jam through Orwellian policies that Bush and Cheney could not get passed! Y’know, it is not actually a very easy case that they are the Party of the Least Worst anymore – in many ways they get to authentically be Worse Worst.
We get it from reading hundreds and hundreds of non USA based media.
We get it from scouring the usual blogs front pages, from HuffPo to TPM, Digby, and more, just to see what issues they are covering.
We match that up with what FDL/Seminal is doing.
And we come out realizing, even the prog blogs are not proggy.
Or well rounded, have some objectives we don’t know about (making a living).
And we know, outside of foreign media sources and online content, FDL/Seminal and the folks who post diaries are likely as well versed, educated and proficient on the issues of our day as the major players involved in them.
Not to mention folks who comment at FDL and Seminal.
Outside of professional industry blogs from workers like The Oil Drum Dot Com, FDL got Pups with all the creds.
Educations, experiences, jobs and years of time in their professions.
They amaze me, day after day. Fantastic professionals, proven to be so. In all facets of their lives, in all sorts of fields.
That’s where we get out truth.
Sadly, what it means is what was drummed into me by my pops, and then teachers, and then professors.
You keep reaching and learning or you’ll fall for the lies the rest will feed ya.
And I got lazy for a decade or more in my time, too.
I’m still catching up for that lost time of not being FULLY engaged . . . and informed.
Hope this helps, don’t mean to lecture by any means, just sharing MY versions of it all, how it happened to me, how I live it . . . it’s hard. Takes a lot of time for sure.
The minute I resume work, I’ll be set back a lot, but I have FDL and all the other links to scan when I have time.
I guess, scanning is a good habit, cuz ya just can’t read EVERYthing . . . and that may be the smartest thing I’ve ever said . . . ;-)
How do you learn to love someone who votes against holding BP accountable for ruining the gulf of Mexico?
A very good question.
Most fully, it starts from doing enough work on myself to develop my own ability to love and tolerate that I can see something like that and not just recoil from it. It’s a whole process of self-development, just like going to the gym to develop a muscle, or practicing an instrument for years to develop a skill.
Then, once I can gaze upon whatever it is and not just react (fight it or run away), I look for how whatever it is might also be helping the larger system.
Disease is a great example for all these things, because it’s both something everyone has experienced, and it’s also what’s really going on at the larger level.
When I’m sick, the disease exhibits symptoms. The disease makes these symptoms more and more and more painful until I can no longer simply ignore or tolerate them and I actually do something about them.
But those symptoms, and the disease that cause them, are not the problem. The problem is whatever it was I was doing that had me get sick in the first place.
The disease, which from the limited and reactive perspective is the horrible, painful thing to be avoided or killed, is actually the messenger of healing, telling me (if I’ll listen) where and how I’m out of balance, and thus how to heal myself.
It’s not like the disease is simply painful, or simply the messenger of healing. It’s both.
And so the trick isn’t so much to just out and out love the symptom (say, the behavior around the abuse of our environment). The trick is to learn to come into balance. And it’s from that place of balance that I can see the whole thing, and love that. And because that whole contains all the parts, from that place I can feel love for them, too.
So it’s not just trading one thing for the other, trading hate for love. It’s learning to do something in addition, learning to love as well as hate. Moving from this-or-that to that-and-that.
In the specific example you give, I hate that someone would vote against holding BP accountable, and I love that by voting that way they’d upset enough people like yourself that you might collectively be motivated to change, not just the government’s relation to the way business is allowed to rape the planet, but most of all how we each rape our own personal lives in the search for riches. It’s that which will change everything.
So, since that vote (and everything else that’s happening) leads eventually to transformation, I love it. I don’t always enjoy it so much. But like the pain of life itself, I appreciate what it will bring.
I’m so sorry to hear that. There’s nothing I can say to express my anger/dismay over your personal violation. It’s a form of rape. And becoming increasingly acceptable in this new American era, unfortunately. What a few years of privately owned former Public airwaves and media corporate control of news can do to damage our country!! Numb us out, dumb us down. Stick a fork in us. And give us permission to find our inner bullies.
Thank you for all the incredible information you research and write about.
You make GREAT points about spending and budgeting one’s time.
TV News is out, for sure, other than maybe the one’s you pick.
Still, a hand full of online sources, a scan of the headlines.
Read in depth when ya have time.
Online ALWAYS has indepth you’ll NEVER find on even cable news, and that’s cuz they are owned by the corps.
And half the shit you see and hear on cable news, any network, is shilled PR from the corporate overlords.
So, yeah, it’s hard to get the truth.
I’d only say, if ya have online sources for overseas media, ya gotta use them.
Cuz they’ll report what isn’t ever reported here in the USA.
And to close, yeah, Amy Goodman and Dem Now is about as proggy as it can get, and they don’t cover it all, and can’t. So they are limited, in a sense, too and ya gotta listen to it for hours.
Half their content or more you can read online from the guests they have on . . .
Again, I’d urge online scanning of Sy Hersh, Gareth Porter, and the likes. Prof Juan Cole, and many more.
Many can be had thru AW dot com . . . for world news.
Domestically? I just don’t think you can get better for in depth, detailed, and late breaking that scanning a hand ful of proggy blogs (most of them veal penners) and making sure FDL and Seminal is your best choice.
Always love your thoughts and comments, BTW. So thanks for that . . . . sorry if I came across a bit ‘bossy’.
As an admitted fan of Rachel Maddow’s show, I would like to say that if stridency and confidence in the face of bigotry and ignorance are loveless, than I am in support of the loveless.
Standing up to someone with an ideology that would result in a return to discrimination in private settings (I might add that the Supreme Court decided that the Civil Rights act was constitutional) is a virtue. Kicking his ignorant butt all over the screen is aggression I can support. If that doesn’t fit your definition of ‘a place of love’, so be it.
Well the estimates vary from 20-30 million they didn’t say in the article I read to get the numbers. And they use various methods to measure.
I actually think people who listen to laugh at him have a bigger impact than we think. The reasonis that listening to him can lull people into dismissing him and belittling his power. He uses a retorical technique that I can’t remember the name of right now, but studies have shown that it works even on
people who don’t agree with him.
He first talks about a value that many people can agree with, say the greatness of people having a shot at achieving a dream. Then he idenitifes the people who he believes blocks those values. This is confusing for the brain because on second you are agreeing and then you are not.
Rush allows people to bring out their inner Archie Bunker. He provides people like my mom with pre developed views that are backed with a positive value. It works better than just saying “hate the liberals” it’s “the greatness of this country is being hurt by liberals. We must defeat them.” my mom doesn’t want to hate me, but I am a liberal and someone is destroying the country and it is not her!
Whoever wants to trash Rachel will have to fight me first.
She’s moving off her cheerleader-for-Obama rap, fast, with this BP Catastrophe.
I feel a wee bit responsible for helping Rachel get her gig, and if anyone doesn’t like what she’s doing they should write to her nicely and tell her how to improve: rachel at msnbc dot com.
They read the emails, and she reads some.
If you’ve got a beef, don’t complain here at FDL — tell Rachel and her team.
For some reason, that doesn’t bother me. Lots of people are cleared of crimes using DNA too. I’m guessing every baby for the last many years is DNA recorded.
I know the arguments against it, but to me it feels like having to get a drivers license.
What pissed ME off was the fucking crew didn’t have the guts to CHALLENGE the BP Ball Caps and the Coast Guard with the fucking reality of who owns what! (unless that island is OWNED by BP, then the Coast Guard has no business patrolling it for security).
Oh, LooHoo, that’s a scary kind of complacency in my version of America.
Goes pretty deep into Orwellian. Man, I miss the days when George Orwell was just another school book project.
Do you think They were using his writings to twist them into a tool for controlling the next stage of citizens?
Why did we all have to read him? Why did they put all those stupid questions at the end of each chapter to diffuse it? Quiz included. And why is every political travesty “Orwellian”?
Weird.
Keith really lost me when he brought Richard Wolff back. I mean, what do I care what he, Howard Fineman, Kos, Exra Klein or Larry O’Donnell think? Give me any issue, any issue at all, any current event — I can tell you any of their spiels, answer all of KO’s interrogatories.
Rachel, though — she’s fresh, original, dogged, polite, persistent, and moral. I think she could go far in a real media landscape, and so she’ll be there — right there — as long as she wants to be. I mean, did you see her World Metronomy Day segment tonight? Bartending, measuring the distance to the moon, and the Big Baltimore Fire. Amazing stuff.
Heaven, to me, is Rachel learning about something new. Or interviewing Elizabeth Warren.
And I’ll be watching every night, despite Kent Jones.
If Rachel Maddow didn’t ‘do’ Rand Paul with such energy, who would have?
And that’s a great example of what I’m talking about.
In the short moments I’ve listened to Rand Paul, his position sounded like a fairly standard libertarian one – the government should make rules about the government, and the people should be left alone. It’s pretty simple, straightforward, and standard (though I don’t know that my assessment is accurate, I haven’t spent a lot of time on it).
Apply that notion to Civil Rights, and you get the result that people should be allowed to like and dislike and interact with whom they please.
Apply it to any other Act and you’ll get the same thing, keep the government parts but the parts that control the individual are overreaching.
But Maddow went off about how such a belief was totally unacceptable. She didn’t seem to be making any attempt to understand why anyone might feel that way, she was just making those with whom she disagreed wrong.
To put it a way that makes the core hypocrisy (which is why she’s always going on about hypocrisy, it’s projection) more clear, she essentially said this:
“Rand Paul believes that each person should be allowed to choose who they exclude from their society. And I say that anyone holding such a vile belief should be excluded from our society!”
Rand Paul is just one guy in Kentucky. He hasn’t even been elected to anything. A more balanced response would be “OK, Rand Paul says (whatever),” and then try to understand why people voted for him (without simply implying it’s because they must be racists), or just move on to something more important. Yet Rachel was going nuts.
It’s because, like a dog snarling and barking at their own reflection in a mirror, she was reacting to herself.
People in the ‘journalism’ business are very cowed by authority figures today. They learn this from their corporate masters if they don’t come by it naturally.
You & I watched an entirely different program. I’m not surprised at all at that, actually, and mine might be a minority view of Rachel, but I think you might acknowledge that yours might be too.
I’ve watched Rachael interview people and I would hate to be in her sights. What most people don’t see is the interviews that are run by the mainstream print media. I have. I’ve listened into and observed 100s of interviews. The interviews are Not like in the old days. The media are streched. The tough questions are often not asked or they are asked but not pressed. Interestingly the trade press are often tougher than the national mainstream press.
One of the things I believe in is finding some media people you like and help them do their job.
stridency and confidence in the face of bigotry and ignorance
The problem is Maddow projects her own bigotry and ignorance all over everyone else. She’s a cross between Lisa Simpson and “Mean Girls.”
She never sincerely asks the question “how am I bigoted and ignorant?” She’s never the problem. It’s always someone else, who she then proceeds to judge and ridicule.
Rather than stridency and confidence in the face of bigotry and ignorance, she’s stridency and confidence as the face of bigotry and ignorance.
…his position sounded like a fairly standard libertarian one – the government should make rules about the government, and the people should be left alone.
snip
Apply that notion to Civil Rights, and you get the result that people should be allowed to like and dislike and interact with whom they please.
snip
But Maddow went off about how such a belief was totally unacceptable.
Title Two of the Civil Rights Act
SEC. 201. (a) All persons shall be entitled to the full and equal enjoyment of the goods, services, facilities, and privileges, advantages, and accommodations of any place of public accommodation, as defined in this section, without discrimination or segregation on the ground of race, color, religion, or national origin.
Unacceptable is an understatement, for a man vying for a seat in The United States Senate.
I can totally understand why it could freak people out. DNA or even retinal scanning just doesn’t freak me. It’s a whole new world, and not in a Disney kind of way. DNA records can help people in both criminal and medical ways.
We have been down this road before. The claim is, “I may be an ignorant fool or even a bigot, but you’re not entitled to express your intolerance over my intolerance. And you are certainly not entitled to do it at the top of your lungs.”
That is quite simply why Liberals are always fighting from a crouch – because they will not stand up and smack the crap out of ignorant fools.
Whoa hoss, are you saying their bosses and corporate owners DON’T muzzle them?
Or dictate what’s kosher to cover?
Cuz that’s the issue I’M gunning on.
Aside of what any thing Rache or Olbie WANT to do, or would do sans muzzle.
I can appreciate your affinity and closeness to Rache if yer part of how she rose thru the ranks, but you just can’t dismiss MY frustrations and fuming for the muzzling . . . and you can’t dismiss that muzzling ain’t there.
Sometimes, Teddy, I’ve learnt from you and others at FDL over the years, you don’t HAVE to pull both triggers on the double barrel . . . sometimes, ya just have to click ONE back, to make a point . . . ;-)
I know you said you just bailed out, but I’ll reply anyway because the timing is close.
This is one of those things that’s like seeing the picture that’s both the young woman and the old hag (that’s not meant to be sexist, I just don’t know any other widespread examples). If one preferentially sees in the picture the young woman, but hasn’t yet learned to easily see the hag, then that’s what one sees, and will continue to see. For some people, seeing the other side of the picture is difficult, and takes hard work and persistence and open-mindedness, and sometimes even a little external guidance from those who know how to see it.
Maddow is the same way. There are people who are charmed by her air, and at times she can be smart and funny (at least compared to the rest of the media landscape). But most people don’t know how to see the astounding degree of Maddow’s, to quote newtonusr, “bigotry and ignorance.”
Whether anyone can see it or not doesn’t affect whether they should like her, or whether they should watch her, of course. People are allowed to like what they like and watch what they want.
But once one learns how to see it, in Maddow and Olbermann’s cases, it’s shocking.
P.S.
if anyone doesn’t like what she’s doing they should write to her nicely and tell her how to improve: rachel at msnbc dot com
I’ve tried, with specific examples of what might be a problem and what to change. No responses, and no changes.
I would appreciate you not misquoting me. You know that remark was aimed at Paul. That is a luxury that the above comment does not afford you, unless you choose to misconstrue it.
“I may be an ignorant fool or even a bigot, but you’re not entitled to express your intolerance over my intolerance. And you are certainly not entitled to do it at the top of your lungs.”
You’re right, that’s exactly what needs to be said – to Maddow.
I suspect certain topics are off the table.
However, in the context of this discussion about the ferocity of her attack on Rand Paul, I don’t know what that has to do with anything.
You were very accurate in your assessment of the problem, and so I used your phrase because it was exactly right.
I didn’t say you said that about Maddow, but what you were seeing was precisely her problem, so I used your phrase. It’s immaterial that you can see it about some people but not about others – the problem is exactly how you described it, so I credited you.
That isn’t misquoting you.
While I can appreciate how you might infer from what I wrote that’s what I was suggesting you said, there’s another equally if not more valid way of reading it which doesn’t imply that at all.
In the future, you might want see things from the other person’s perspective and ask the other person what they meant, rather than just assume you’re right and judge them.
I don’t like to watch Ratigan. He sets up the situation and makes his guests agree with him. I don’t like his tone, and while I agree with him usually, it’s just not a show I enjoy watching. So I don’t. I don’t want an angry host. That’s one reason why I so enjoy watching Rachel.
I am judging your take. You seem to object because you think that a journalist/commentator attacking an intellectually lazy, bigoted stance by a candidate for the US Senate is out of bounds because she did it with aggression and facts. It is hard for me to express how deeply we disagree.
You can stop right there. Anyone who would call Rachel ignorant is well…
The opposite of ignorance is omniscience. I don’t think even her most ardent supporters would dare claim she’s omniscient.
Just like all of us, if she doesn’t know everything, there must be things she doesn’t know. The problem is she doesn’t look for them, or represent them in any way. And by not looking for her own failings, prejudice, blindness, ignorance, she effectively adopts the position of omniscience.
Which underlies what then behaviorally becomes judgement and ridicule. She’s always right, the subject she’s criticizing and ridiculing is always wrong. (Of course, the other side of this is the guests who agree with her are lovingly praised for their right-thinking.)
She’s either omniscient or in some way ignorant. And she’s not omniscient.
Socrates said he was wise because “I know nothing except the fact of my ignorance.”
Aloha, Suz…!
aloha ct — how’s paradise tonight?
One of my all-time fave tunes…!
Gorgeous day, but, I slept through most of it, having worked up top last nite…! ;-)

hey that guy — oooooo good tune to stir things up a bit with :)
hey loohoo — how’s socal tonight?
Beautiful weather these days and nights. Glad your storm blew over.
When I hear this song now, I think of Obama.
I’m that disappointed.
still gonna have bands of showers moving through for a few days but no 58mph gusts :) i was able to put the birdfeeder on its hook for a bit this afternoon.
Great and you?
i still think of boosh with that song.. and his fucking up that saying — but i totally understand. i’m pretty disappointed myself
kicking back and hanging out :) tomorrow i am forced to head into town to get groceries and run errands but am feeling pretty good about being able to procrastinate doing that for 5 days…
I used to, but now…Obama supporting Blanche FUCKING Lincoln?
We are SO FUCKED!
What I find equally horrifying is the MSM calling Joe Sestak a “progressive.”
I don’t know what he is, but a progressive he ain’t. He’s not Ben Nelson but he sure as shit isn’t Donna Edwards.
baba
THey always called it “Barber” onstage. The Barber of Riley. :-D
the corporatists are in charge — just look at bp calling all the shots on their oil disaster and the coast guard doing their bidding.
barber
Hiya, Suzanne. Beginning to plant my garden today. The soil temps jumped yesterday, and no night this coming week under 45 degrees F.
Disappointed my Seminal post didn’t make the recommended diaries today -Time for Sun City 2010. What did I do wrong?
hey et — i’ve never been able to figure it out — some things are a hit one day and no one wants to talk about it another. been enjoying your pics over at your place
Hi Suz nice tunes. Nahant sent his hawk pictures Pretty cool neighbors. i feel that way about Osprey just awesome predators. Getting into nightly meds as in meditation, Giving the big Kahuna the opportunity to drop in. And good to quite the mind. Happy wishes to all and goodnight,

hey larue — how’s sac tonight?
Well, I for one haven’t read it yet today . . but I will tonite or in the morrow.
And I already know I’ll rccd. Of course.
HA! The Lifelock guy, who advertised his SS# all over the place has had his identity stolen at least 13 times!
Riki starts at about 25 minutes.
Had light cloud cover and a breeze all day, topped out at 74F. 60F now, light breeze, getting kewler.
Blows me away. Could be in 90′s or more.
I Call It A Bargain.
Up there with My Gen, IMHO. That loon Moon was one crazed summa bitch on the stix.
*bows*
Thanks Larue… I am fortunate they keep giving me opportunities to shoot some great shots.. Seems I am making a new flying friend… She trusted me to fly even closer to me.. I was amazed.. she was sitting on the wire not 15″ from me and kept giving me her call and posing for her pictures… .. it went on for at least 10-15 min… I won’t forget that encounter…
Anyplace to find a summary of her time with Shannon on the air?
loon
what do you mean?
15 INCHES?!?!?!?!!?!?
WOWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!
Dow down 376, oil still spillin’ in the Gulf, MSM calling Sestak a “progressive,” Obama still supporting Blanche Lincoln, ruing the loss of Arlen Specter and all the rest of the same shit on a different day.
I’ve read tales about the huge veges/fruits in Alaska. Especially pumpkins! How many hours of daylight do you have now?
Prine, one of my fest favs . . . *G*
larue, senate passed its ‘financial reform’ — other stuff covered in ddays roundup
shit inches inches ..feet feet…. damn.. I hate it whe I screw up like that.. you be quick Larue *G*
Sorry, ET, a bit vague on my part, my bad.
Um, someone who listened to it and summarized it?
Just don’t want to listen to audio . . . would rather read her words or about her words.
I haven’t seen what’s at Seminal today, I’m sure some of her chronicles are encaptured to read.
24
I missed the pics, nahant.
had a little birdie fly into the house yesterday. after beating her wings against the windowpane, she let me gently cup my hands around her and when i opened my hands once outside, she flew off
when do ya sleep??
*G*
Riki is doing a phenomenal job down there. There should be 5,000 people helping here. There might be three or four. Maybe she should rename what she is doing the Gulf Tea Party or some fucking thing.
August
Wow! So it’s black out curtains when you sleep? How does that work?
OH, sweet. You maybe should write and illustrate a childrens’ book about that…
Jeepers, guys, I’m down there on the bottom of prevthread, responding with all sorts of wonderful bon mots and personal stories, including a funny and heartfelt apology to our formerly GOP hostess, and you all have Moved. The. Fuck. On.
Heeeeyyyy!
Sent them in email..I will be posting them on the web tomorrow @ mypicturetown at Nikon
i do my best sleeping once the sun has come up. 24 hours of daylight would totally fork up my circadian clock
Pretty good day overall.
Just found out that Manoel de Oliveira’s latest film, Eccentricities of a Blonde Girl, is playing here in NYC in July. Mucho contento.
It is the lack of light in winter that bothers me.
hey teddy — ya gotta pay attention. life comes at ya pretty fast as ferris bueller says :)
how’s sf tonight?
hey loohoo my local news is showing a wildfire in corona — is that down by you?
hey janeanne — long time no see. how ya doing tonight?
If you’re asking the question seriously, rather than just using it as a lament (I can’t tell without inflection), then I’d say
1. Today you’re up against environmental devastation and
economic devastationfinancial “reform.”2.
hey openhope — how’s washington state tonight?
They do think they’re impervious to it. Specter’s defeat (quite resounding, too), and Halter’s very strong showing are serious signs of the old order breaking down, but the Obama administration is doubling down on the old one, i.e. Lincoln.
Dude, 15 FEET is close, yes! 15″ would make your nose raptor food. *G*
hey ev — how ya doing tonight?
Shit, is it fire season yet?
Pretty good. Got Bob Dylan Christmas songs in my head.
O Come All Ye Faitful, joyful and triumphant….
He sings the first verse in Latin on his Christmas album.
Speaking of Latin, I saw a copy of the Cat in the Hat in Latin today. Far out.
hey mary mcc — how ya doing tonight senator?
Hey, Teddy! Kind of a slow news day, no?
Thanks.
Actually, fdl is fairly progressive when it comes to rationally discussing Palestinian rights.
Good. cept for the High Red Alert for allergy season. I do have drugs for it though. How about yourself?
It doesn’t matter if the dems or the ‘pukes are in power. There is so little difference any more, it’s useless even voting these days. Whether there’s a D or an R in front of the candidate’s name, you’re voting for the same person, just in a different body.
Hey,Suzanne, we are doing good. Maria Cantwell is standing as one of two civil servants in the senate to demand tougher FinReg. I didn’t have time today to call her offices but I will tomorrow.
We had another great community dinner before our council meeting. Starting to talk like calm grown-ups around here. It’s really inspiring to watch the conversation tone shift.
sneezing like all get out but that’s the extent of it … so far. am hopeful that whatever got stirred up by the wind will settle down
Just Another Bird In The House
Nice story, that’s too kewl, Suz . . . *smiles*
I have no clock anymore, Suz. It’s the weirdest thing. Who knows what time of the day or night I’ll wake up? Today is was 3:30AM, but tomorrow it could be 10:00 AM. The beauty of retirement!
i got rid of mine too. tis the best thing about retirement — getting up when ya wanna get up
Well off to see the wizard.. nite all…
malformed url per utube larue :(

No, that’s closer to LA. Thanks for the heads up though. We have Coronado.
thanks — i get the towns down there all mixed up… i lived on coronado island when my dad was stationed there in the late 50′s. navy housing
g’nite nahant
You guys must not have to rely on ferries to get somewhere.
Well, Obama did not enjoy his financial reform speech without a rodent.

Where is Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis?
Where?
ET, I was on a bluegrass chat room to http://www.worldwidebluegrass.com two days ago.
That sure takes me back.
That’s about all this country needs. Huge fires out west.
We need to “volunteer” by going down there and documenting what is going on.
is she relying on bp to conduct tests like the rest of the feds are?
Seriously good point. I was thinking OSHA but they’ve been successfully castrated to stay in the “Boys Choir”.
Well fuck hoss, give us a quick summary, one or two paragraphs.
Hell, I’ve missed most of the DAY at FDL, I’m in the hole a gazillion bits of info . . . n YOU think YOU got it bad!!!
;-)
“And how was YOUR day, honey?”
lol
i can’t hear that song and not think of hot summer nights under starry skies
We had so much rain this year. In fire terms it just means that the dry grass is higher and more robust.
Makes me think of Knoxville and Memphis and being in my earliest of twenties.
Good work, Mods.
this one does the same thing to me — instant summer
That, and failure to deal with Deepwater is gonna kill them in November, and in ’12. Not to mention the blowback from the POS fin reform when the econ tanks . . . in ’11 (I follow Hugh, I concur with him about that).
Bless ya, nice to see ya out, don’t let it get ya down too much, we need every prog boot and booty available for the duration . . ;-) Best to ya and yours and any critters that may own ya ( can’t keep track of all Puppers).
hey dearie — how ya doing
on behalf of the mod squad (finest on the internets), thank you
happy 100 mary!
OH!! Is this an update on the flotilla? I GOTTA read that then!!!
This is a flash point issue, and if it flashes, it will trounce IMMEDIATELY anything else, world wide.
Evenin’ Lakers
That is about the third or fourth time I have done that. I ain’t even trying.
hey starbuck — sounds like a great day
Oh, lordy. I hope we’re not there yet. There seems to be to be a very distinct difference between most dems and republicans. Check all of the votes for the last year. The republicans are the party of NO following their leader, Rush Limbaugh. (NYT story I can’t find right now!)
Don’t give up your vote, PLEASE!
Agreed, it’s simple logic, we all know. But the dems will care cuz THEY don’t get the main piece of the gravy.
And yes, no matter WHO is in, in ’10 or ’12, it’s all going to collapse upon itself anyways.
That’s inevitable. And then, the rich and 1% will be a bit more equal to the rest of us.
Now Coronado is the hottest spot in San Diego, competing with La Jolla and Rancho Santa Fe.
Phook, I musta phooked up the cut n paste while browsing.
The Bird In The House
worked that time larue :)
I keep wondering about the danger of the fumes people are breathing, but I haven’t seen anything at all.
It’s in your karma. [smile]
I’m not in Coronado. I wish!
if you find them that distasteful, why do you watch?
I found that Limbaugh story very annoying. I’m sick of fawning stories about how powerful he is. If he is powerful and we think he is dangerous we make him toxic and make help him destroy himself.
That is how you get rid of him. But nobody thinks he is dangerous enough to do what it takes.
sort of like driving past a wreck.
hey spocko — how ya doing tonight?
See, I don’t think Olberman and Maddow are haters, I just think they are truth tellers in jester suits and I would so love it if they would dial it back by huge degrees and just, for g-d’s sake, report! But I do think they put truth out there. Where are you getting truth???
Seen that, it’s great.
Funny, I always thought it was Linda LaFlamme on vocals, but it’s Patti Santos!!!
Dang, all these decades!!!! And I SAW them, twice, too!!! Thought it was a gorgeous redhead Linda!!!
I think you just nailed a great new “support” group theme. Right on, dude!
Healing through utter rot. The Lazarus Method.
I’m thinking you might have something here.
Muzzled, like they all are.
Good work, Mary!
i’m thinking their lineup changed over time…. that was closing of filmore iirc…
Thanks!
Put the pics on an online photo sharing site so you can share! Sounds wonderful.
I’d guess it’s not gonna be too long now before XE comes in to police it all, as the toxics began to wreak havoc on people.
No one goes in, no one comes out.
Certainly, not volunteers, or volunteer truckloads of food, water, and such.
They weren’t let in during post Katrina, if you recall.
The muzzles are on everyone’s snouts, and will be cinched the worse this gets.
XE will patrol it, too. Watch, less n two weeks, I bet.
I recall that, I’m phreakin DELIGHTED to hear this!!!
The more FDL/Seminal digs in deep, the more the shit disturbers will be here.
They get paid to do it . . . and then, some are just chronic trolls that are really sick fucks.
Thanks for the report, Dearie!!!!
I sure do remember. 300 boats were towed to New Orleans from around LA to rescue folks. They were turned back. And the Blackwater fuckheads were patrolling the rich people’s neighborhoods.
Good lord yes . . . *G*
I was guessing Mongo Jerry . . I like this one better, by far.
It’s ONE of a few songs overplayed to death I can still listen to.
*G*
Major screw-up on Obama’s part. If he did something to try to help fix the situation, what was it? True, he separated the jobs in MMS, but that a little after the fact.
I’m wondering if there is just nothing that can be done. I’m sure Obama wouldn’t intentionally let this mess continue. Nobody knows what to do. All we know for sure is that there should be no further offshore drilling.
I’m thinking the Russians were right when they suggested that we nuke the damn thing.
mungo
Can I get an answer? Where do you get your news?
Thanks for the tip, too many folks not into the genre’s never heard that band.
They are great.
Interesting!
There’s fumes from the oil, and from methane too . . . all toxic. Lungs, nose, throat, mouth.
As ET has shared, same as Valdez in AK.
The volunteers got hit hard, as did those living near the spill region.
one of the things i like about fdl is the variety of music. i’ve had threads that had classical, head banging metal, jazz, and rock in the comments. i favor the blues but i like good music, no matter the genre.
Your suggestions, please.
And Rachel (who gets trashed on FDL quite a bit) took on Rand Paul and then gave a great follow up tonight. Who else is doing that? She took on C Street. Who else did that? She isn’t totally smooth, but she’s smart and pretty tough and just keeps on truckin’. God love her!
and she is unflappable.
Sorry, I’m not ignoring you, longer answers take longer to write. You’re next.
Hey spocko!
Yeah, David tossed out his wife Linda by 70/71, before the second album Marrying Maiden was out.
And lord THAT album is awesome, and sadly overlooked by many.
Don And Dewey
The lovely Patti Santos bottom left, the drummer lady, bottom right . . . ah the women of the SF Scene. ;-)
Spellin, meh . . why’d I think that was coming our way? *G*
You got mail . . . ;-)
Hi Suz, hi pups, just a drive by because it is so late here, and I can’t even believe I’m still up…headed to bed now, but I wanted to drop this little gem for Larue:
Garcia/Grisman
Enjoy!
hey ll — always a pleasure — and g’nite
You, And ES, on the music LLN’s?
And your readers?
At times, like a music history course, often at a Masters or Doctorate level (ET and Kelly, for instance).
Despite my prejudices and likes and musical dislikes, I’m becoming more tolerant of at least discussing music.
Course, there’s just SOME buttons ya push them, and I go all limp and smiling into the lava lamp. ;-)
Yes, you are right.
Jane is in touch with her.
i’ve never had a dood say going limp because of me was a good thing before larue — lmao
Sad, but true. They are kabuki, most definitely.
I’ll update the Gaza flotilla whenever there is something significant to report.
There’s a lot of work to do.
Sad. I listen to you, Larue. Makes me sad. Where do we get truth?
I think we should just start showcasing his “stuff’ at every opportunity. His penthouse is not what the gun totin’, freedom lovin’, brown people hatin’, women degradin’ men want to see. It’s so over-designed.
And the men love his talk. We’ve protested on opposing corners of a major intersection in small town America for a huge part of my children’s lives. Always 3 times more anti-war then Tea Baggers. Every damn Sunday this spectacle goes on. They LOVE Rush. If they actually saw the crap he owns I think they’d be worried. They’re not that kind of guy.
Sometimes all the mugging gets to me. Particularly from Keith.
from each other. We seem to be doing a pretty good job of it. Seems FDL scoops lots of news.
from plame to plume as eg so elegantly said a few days ago
Wow!
So, we’ve had to upgrade our personal safety.
I too, think her and Olbie are doing the best they can, under the muzzle and leash of their corporate overlords.
I fervently believe if they could really fly, we’d see shit that’s not been seen since Dave McQueen, Scoop Nisker, and HST went undercover for news.
Who said that?
geez et…. that fucking sucks
egregious
of course.
Calling it a night. Thanks for the energy!
Four police shot in Eastern Arkansas, the first two killed by a pair of AK-47 wielding men after pulling over a van with Ohio plates in a possible drug stop. Later the police chief father of the was also shot along with a game department ranger.
The van has been traced to a Aryan Brotherhood Christian Identity church called the “House of Gods” that was once led by racist Harold Ray Redfeairn.

g’nite dearie
Holy cow.
hey c’ape and holy shit
there was doods shooting at police cars in eastern oregon — fbi was called in
You have a good point. It becomes a Gladiator thang as opposed to real communication. Too much Them vs US. And yet, the gauntlet has been dropped by the Global Corporate Party. What are we to do?
I would start with fixing the MAJOR problems in our election system. Said Don Quixote.
It did. We didn’t even used to lock the house until Sarah made the limelight. Now I get followed from time to time.
Imagine what would happen if we had real news. How long would it have taken for Obama to send ships to help in the gulf?
shit…. i really disliked the quittah before but now i really major dislike the skank *spitting* that is so forking wrong
Still? Even after she retired, er—resigned>>>>>>>>>>>fucking quit.
How do you learn to love someone who votes against holding BP accountable for ruining the gulf of Mexico?
skank spitting?
OK, on to the other part of your question.
It’s hard to squeeze a manual for how to live the second half of a life into an FDL comment…. ;-)
I think it is more of an abstract kind of affection. I tried that for about a year with GWB. Then I had to let out some of the stored up energy.
Keith and Rachel are two entirely different animals. The student has far surpassed the teacher.
Dang LL, you know me . . . *bows*
i listen to countdown with one ear… i watch the rachel maddow show
Well, sad she can’t lead the charge full time . . . again.
We need one, or more, to do so down there.
Cuz I have a sick feeling as it gets worse, the noose will tighten on info, access, and more.
Irony, it’s in the basket.
Folded neat, too.
Sometimes I lob ‘em up there . . . ;-)
happy 200 larue
Whoa. Be Careful, ET. Did your insurance cover the losses, or did you just eat it so the rates didn’t go up?
couldn’t believe they turned away cbs… that’s gotta piss off the press (such as it is)
Link.
Thanks Democrats, thanks ‘Progressives’! Way to jam through Orwellian policies that Bush and Cheney could not get passed! Y’know, it is not actually a very easy case that they are the Party of the Least Worst anymore – in many ways they get to authentically be Worse Worst.
fuck
edit — hey sporkovat — how ya doing tonight?
wellp, I am off to bed. nite!
g’nite senator
No insurance covered it.
Proof that we need more assault rifles in circulation. /s
I guess, scanning is a good habit, cuz ya just can’t read EVERYthing . . . and that may be the smartest thing I’ve ever said . . . ;-)
N bless ya, Ma’am . . . just because. *G*
Yep.
Limbaugh has an audience of 30 million? Good lord. I don’t know how they do the counting, do you? Cuz I might be one of them, and I just laugh.
Wow, I missed that, that’s beautiful.
She’s pretty sharp that EG . . . ;-)
I remain in awe of them all.
Heysoos effin shit.
So sorry to hear it.
Hope your new measures include .50 Caliber Defense While Sleeping.
;-)
Thanks for asking such a good question.
me too — the brainpower of fdl front pagers and the readers in the comments wows me … i always learn something new
I’m so sorry to hear that.
I’m a cynic. I think if we had the REAL news we’d find out it’s not Obama’s decision.
’bout time for me to head out folks. thanks for all the music and conversations and for letting me spend a wee bit of your evening with ya.
g’nite all
I didn’t watch, they were on in the background somewhere I had to be. I left as quickly as I could.
sf is good.
exciting day here today; wrote bunches, sat in on that stupid NOAA briefing, then wrote it up like performance art.
very tired now.
Umm, get plenty of rest, exercise, good food and water, and sunshine? Oh, and loving contact with people, animals, and the environment!
If that’s not a good enough suggestion, if you’ll be a little more specific I’ll try again. ;-)
Congrats Larue!!!
My bad, my tendency to help too much . . . ;-)
Jeebuz . . . I’ll catch up with it tomorrow, but wow.
Damn. Blessings to those lost and their families and friends.
Shit.
My most heartfelt support and understanding hoss.
For all you write there.
I wish you well as well can be.
Keith has become a rodeo clown sometimes, but Rachel just gets better and better.
Shit’s getting wierd, organized or not.
One of Suz’s best, I’d say.
I concur.
;-)
You’re entirely welcome. Don’t bogart.
Better me than you.
*bows*
What pissed ME off was the fucking crew didn’t have the guts to CHALLENGE the BP Ball Caps and the Coast Guard with the fucking reality of who owns what! (unless that island is OWNED by BP, then the Coast Guard has no business patrolling it for security).
*spitsonthemall*
I’m sorry, that’s so well presented I just have to echo it, too.
Well done, and just thanks and best wishes ET.
Oh, Larue! I didn’t think you were being bossy at all. I agree with you on what and where to read too.
Hugs!
One of the things I believe in is finding some media people you like and help them do their job.
g’night, all, love and kisses to one and all…
Heh, I recall that.
Chocolate Brown Mescaline.
1973.
An unmarked lake at about 9,700 ft, somewhere between Cortwright Reservoir and Wishon Reservoir.
We were cross country in the summer. Found a Berkeley U Science Expidition Life Raft and paddles at the site.
Determined, the raft was full of air. We broke camp, ate dinner, and swallowed.
By 6pm, we had the raft on the lake, and were seeing them stars wheeling overhead.
Got lost, took till dawn to get to shore. Lake was only oh, maybe a 1/4 mile across at any point?
50 feet deep at most. Four of us, with paddles. And far away eyes. Till dawn. Round and round.
*G*
The problem is Maddow projects her own bigotry and ignorance all over everyone else. She’s a cross between Lisa Simpson and “Mean Girls.”
She never sincerely asks the question “how am I bigoted and ignorant?” She’s never the problem. It’s always someone else, who she then proceeds to judge and ridicule.
Rather than stridency and confidence in the face of bigotry and ignorance, she’s stridency and confidence as the face of bigotry and ignorance.
Well I’m going to watch this interview. It sounds facinating.

Title Two of the Civil Rights Act
Unacceptable is an understatement, for a man vying for a seat in The United States Senate.
No argument from me, Rand Paul was kicked in the groin and deserved it.
But the MSM issue, and it’s chokehold on Olbie, Rache, or Dylan?
That’s a chokehold. A final one.
So, yeah, I’m happy when they let them slip the leash a bit, and spoon feed us proggys.
But over all? Choked. And it’s obvious.
That’s just my bigger pic point of view on all this . . .
I’ll admit, I THINK we can still stand against blatant racism in this country.
But not for long.
Sweet dreams,all.
Tomorrow I listen to Riki Ott. Oh,god, I’m kind of scared.
Okay, night.
Good night all
I can totally understand why it could freak people out. DNA or even retinal scanning just doesn’t freak me. It’s a whole new world, and not in a Disney kind of way. DNA records can help people in both criminal and medical ways.
What does freak me is the secret surveillance.
Sometimes, Teddy, I’ve learnt from you and others at FDL over the years, you don’t HAVE to pull both triggers on the double barrel . . . sometimes, ya just have to click ONE back, to make a point . . . ;-)
Hi Teddy,
I know you said you just bailed out, but I’ll reply anyway because the timing is close.
P.S.
I’ve tried, with specific examples of what might be a problem and what to change. No responses, and no changes.
Dude, all kidding aside, having Larue tell someone to cool their jets is Orwellian.
Ok Already! You HEART Rachel!
What about Dylan Ratigan?
Is he fresh, and such, like Rachel?
And do you DISPUTE they are ALL phreakin muzzled?
Teddy, we get the lovey, we have the lovey, we ALL want to trust and covet the lovey!
But the owners, the managers, the producers, directors and all are MUZZLED, as are the talent!
What part of that won’t you accept, inside the lovey?
Yes, thank you.
And they are all muzzled.
*G*
I would appreciate you not misquoting me. You know that remark was aimed at Paul. That is a luxury that the above comment does not afford you, unless you choose to misconstrue it.
You’re right, that’s exactly what needs to be said – to Maddow.
Loved yer last line.
*G*
Glad I caught yer attention . . . ;-)
I got a point, I made it . . .
I love Teddy and his point, but he ignores the bigger point in making his point appear to be to the finality.
And it’s not.
The finality is that Rache is owned and muzzled as they all are.
And only slipped of the corporate leash occasionally, and as ratings gains permit.
Will you deny that?
Feed. As. You. Wish.
;-)
I suspect certain topics are off the table.
However, in the context of this discussion about the ferocity of her attack on Rand Paul, I don’t know what that has to do with anything.
You can stop right there. Anyone who would call Rachel ignorant is well…
Night to all sleepers!
Agreed, well and full.
They let her off the leash for a present day SAFE topic, one that sells ratings and will draw in viewers from both racist and non racist sides.
Agreed, well and full to that.
;-)
Don’t for a second lump me in with those who say that the greatest evil of the media is that Rachel Maddow won’t go here or there.
That is for others to howl about.
I do not agree with you about this, but we do have some beliefs in common.
Just as should Maddow.
You caught on . . . well done, LooHoo . . .
Provocation is king in this one’s case.
*G*
I gotta go, bless ya for all your comments and kind eyes on my rantings.
You and Newtonusr, too, whom I also dearly love and embrace as one of FDL’s Finest Pups, as you are.
As Steve Gilliard once posited . . or might have, We Fight On. And we do so, in the morrow.
Damn I love this town . . . *G*
*poof*
I didn’t make it out in time to miss this . .
Ok, not lumping you in, but you gotta gimme some slack and credit for MY points, which are NOT your points.
As I told LooHoo . . . dearly loved and embraced you are, Newtonusr.
And I still love this town!
*G*
Night, Larue. Sleep tight.
I am judging your take. You seem to object because you think that a journalist/commentator attacking an intellectually lazy, bigoted stance by a candidate for the US Senate is out of bounds because she did it with aggression and facts. It is hard for me to express how deeply we disagree.
nite loo hoo
nite larue
outa here too
I was chasing Shady Grove, but I saw yer last retort.
Bless ya hoss, a grand reposte it was!
I Caught Shady Grove!
Love this song, but I’ve never seen CSN perform…so this was a real treat!
Thank you!
I’m sorry the Empress has no clothes.
hey lexington — glad ya enjoyed it — i’ve not seen them perform either and this was a great video — sorta kinda like being there :)
