If you’re in the mood for some incredibly lazy political reporting, check out this piece by Suzi Parker in the Christian Science Monitor, lamenting the supposedly precarious state of “centrist politics.”
Can a centrist senator survive in this pugilistic day of “pick a side”?
Sen. Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas, a moderate Democrat who hemmed and hawed over President Obama’s health-care reform before finally voting in favor of it, will get at least a partial answer on Tuesday, after the Arkansas primary.
One doesn’t usually associate “centrism” with threatening to filibuster your own party’s already moderate bill. If “centrist” means “mainstream,” then wrecking legislation which was supported by a clear majority of Arkansans clearly isn’t “centrist.”
Her worst nightmare: She’ll be out early, bested in the Democratic primary by Lt. Gov. Bill Halter, who is running decidedly to her left.
And what’s the proof given that Halter’s “decidedly to her left”?
Halter has the support of liberal activists such as MoveOn, League of Conservation Voters, and unions.
Now, for Blanche Lincoln to be a “centrist” requires Halter to be a far-left liberal ideologue, which he’s decidedly not, and which is why Suzi Parker didn’t name a single far-left position of his. We are only told that those dirty hippies at MoveOn, most notable for their opposition to Clinton’s impeachment (a mainstream view) and the Iraq War (also mainstream), endorsed him. And since the League of Conservation Voters also endorsed the green radical socialist Harry Reid, we can see just how fringe and out-of-the-mainstream they truly are.
Regardless, Lincoln’s no centrist. She’s made a career of siding with her Fortune 500 masters over her constituents. A smart lady once wrote,
Some in the media will try to paint this as a “purge” of “moderates” from the Democratic party. It’s not. Blanche Lincoln is a radical corporatist. That’s not the “center” of anything.
Indeed. When will hacks like Suzi Parker figure that out?

About Firedoglake
Anything to the left of Palin and Bachman is “centrist.”
Anything to the left of McConnell and Bonehead is radical left.
Haven’t you commie libruls figured that out yet?
It isn’t sloppy journalism, IMHO. It’s yellow journalism. It’s just a partisan hit piece designed to make Blanche appear mainstream. Ha! As if.
The Wobbly in me made me do it.
Hacks like Suzi Parker will never figure it out because as Upton Sinclair said “you can’t expect someone to know something when their paycheck is dependent on them not knowing.
I am shocked, SHOCKED to learn the media does not make reality based assessments!
(yawn)
Five years ago this might have been noteworthy. In recent years anybody marginally left of Michele Bachmann has been described as “centrist.” Blanche Lincoln is as centrist as her fellow corporatist Barack Obama.
Even for a tribal politics post this is scraping the bottom of the barrel.
Quite an excellent developing collection of rhetorical Qs as FDL headlines!
I am a proud resident of the “racial and ethnic” component of the Democratic Party, and with this in mind, permit me to offer this expression of interest.
Last week and at a family gathering, a long time friend and Navajo Medicine Women, jokinging referred to Democrats as “Just another white guy” and in code talk, for those among us and whom express our affinity for the Indigenous Perspective, I have to ask, “Does Lincoln personify her constituents and where she incorporates the Racial and Ethnic Element into her decision-making?”
If not, a primary makes for “good wisdom”.

Soooooo, if I’ve been on the “far left” all these years what the hell am I now?
yo Blue Texan !
have you seen this yet ? via our friend Jason Rosenbaum:
Blanche’s epic fail at polling place
Yeah, awesome.
Good for you SD. If this country had more Wooblies we wouldn’t be in this mess.
That’s funny. Obviously some servant fucked up.
You don’t get the reputation of hack by getting it right. The only goal is to get paid by the word.
The left now refers to people like Kucinich who talk a good game until they capitulate and vote the corporate line. People like you and me, who believe the government SHOULD actually work for the people are radical extremists.
Almost forgot to pay my dues this month. *g*
yeah, they forgot to leave a trail of $100 bills, poor thing’s lost without ‘em :D
Aww, shit. I’ve been called a radical for years. I was sorta looking for a newer, hotter label.
Back to work.
Namaste
y’all
Blanche doesn’t fit in with this crowd.

We should make something up.
I’ve always been partial to arch-liberal provocateur :D
Best laugh I’ve had all day, and I’ve had a few good ones (believe it or not).
What a surprise that CSM has no idea what it is talking about. CSM is neither Christian, Scientific, or a Monitor of anything.
It’s soft and thoroughly absorbent.
If only there were more real patriots like this.

Inn the same universe where she gets to vote twice.
Thank you, priceless.
My best achievement so far, this year is “anarch” and this from Russell Pearce of Arizona and author of SB 1070. And his next round of legislation and which will be next year, he will up the reward for fulminating on calling me a terrorist.
He just couldn’t bring himself to say in proper ‘english’ the “ist”. Thus, I am now a self-ascribed “ist”.
And yes, I know that this doesn’t make much since to most people, but in Arizona. ‘playing the margins’ works. In short, challenging “nationalists” with another brand of “nationalist” work wonders and avoids the pitfall for having to spend $200.00 per hour for some couch time at the office of a mental health expert. Thus, sanity is…where you can find it.

Actually, it IS the center of our oligarchal form of government. She stands right in the center of the corporatocracy. It’s the average citizen who’s left outside.
Oops! Looks like you beat me to it. Funny stuff though.
outer space ? ;)
in the universe whence media is owned by the right wing, whence said deica will call anything even close to the center “far left” whence if said right wing media agrees then it becomes by definition, center
that universe
Pete is cool, except perhaps for the time he picked up an axe and had to be restrained from using it to cut the power to the stage when Dylan violated the sanctity of the 1965 Newport Folk Festival by using electric instruments.
If the media ceases to call Conservatives “Centrists,” they can no longer call Moderates “Socialists.”
cbl2,
Thanks for the “catch” on Blanche
FDL is really cranking today with the Souder article and now dear Blanche.
What time do the polls close in Ark, and Penn.?
Not dumb, just live in Illinois. Well maybe dumb.
PA polls close at 8 pm ET
She is a right winger, but I’ll bet Halter would have voted mandates bill too. I admit I don’t think Halter and Sesak will be anything but a superficial change. Look at Kucinich’s cave on health care. The problem is the democratic party itself not a few bad apples. I wouldn’t waste my time on these primaries.
Thanks Elliott!
Agreed. While I want to see the corporatist incumbents removed, they will simply be replaced with different corporatist candidates. The party is corrupt to the core.
Clinton was the rotten apple that spoiled the whole barrel.
A rabid communist?
We’re all radicals now…
I’ll see you a wobbly and raise you a do-re-mi.
AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen blue Texan and the Firepup Freedom Fighters:
“When will hacks like Suzi Parker figure that out?”
Answer: When Norske takes the vows of celebacy and the priesthood in the Roman Church of Man-boy Love.
In other words it’s inconsequential and it don’t mean nuthin’ and that’s good cuz it means the corporate media and established institutional politics are irrelevant at this moment. We haven’t had a real “politics” in this country since November of 1963 and now we don’t have an economy either so let’s party like it’s 1999 and go to a local city council meeting and raise hell!!
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, AND REMEMBER A FASCIST IS A FASCIST IS A FASCIST!!
CCC, Clinton, Corporatist Catalyst.
If Bill had not done it, someone else would have served as the agent.
Citizen SouthernDragon:
You are where you have always been Brother Dragonman…you’re out there in the ether with Hendrixx and The Pearl and John Lennon. Sing it ,Brother!
Suzi Parker reminds me of Humpty Dumpty in Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carol
Nah, not Clinton. It was the DLC – Damn Lying Corporatists!
Is Clinton the Democratic version of the Republicans Ronald Reagan, above reproach and worthy of the status of a demigod? I can see perhaps FDR reaching that status but certainly not Clinton.
This morning on MSNBC heard Contessa Brewer refer to Blanche as a “Moderate” Democrat.
Signs of the end of civilization: Bristol Palin now going on the “rubber chicken” circuit to speak about abstinence for $$. Please just shoot me now.
As one commenter yesterday put it yesterday (if I can be so bold as to plagerize), centrist is just another term for “For Sale.” And sometimes not even to the highest bidder, either.
Neither “centrist” nor “bipartisan” have the standard dictionary definition, when these terms are bandied about by corporate shills like Suzi Parker.
And lo, the once somewhat reputable Christian Science Monitor has fallen to the low level of most of the media in the USA, which is: propoganda brought to you and bought for you by the obscenely wealthy. Caveat emptor always applies.
Halter on National Security:
Accountability Now’s darling.
P.S. Since when was either the Republics or the Democrats *supposed to be* “centrist”? Rhetorical question, but in theory, I thought both parties were meant to “represent” (stop laughing!) their constituents. Said constituents are usually not all that “centrist;” on both sides of the aisle, we voters often have strong views.
This is another way that the political narrative has been dumbed down and made into some kind of mushy pablum. Pols are supposed to be fighting with one another – via debates, facts (ahem), negotiations, and yes, even strategizing – to reach a final vote on an issue. And, in theory, may the “best” party win.
Over time, this concept of democracy has been propogandized into some weird twisted thing, whereby the almighty “centrist” viewpoint allegedly reigns supreme. Certainly Lincoln is no centrist, but why is article shilling out that somehow being a “centrist” is what Lincoln was elected to do and should be praised for and voted back into office for?? How stupid is that? yes: rhetorical.
Perhaps Lincoln is a centrist in the defintiton of the David Broder Institute of bipartisanship and moral equivalency.
Parker’s writing laziness may be enhanced by the constant litany of the Trad Media’s defining of a right wing, or conservative, Democrat as “centrist” or “moderate.”
MSNBC has been referring to Blanche as a “moderate” all day. What is the matter with calling a pol a “corporatist,” if that’s what she really is?
I suppose it’s because damn near every politician at the federal, state or local level would fit that description, and there wouldn’t be any way to differentiate among them. But it would certainly be truthful, and the public would finally understand that their elected representatives care more about the business interests than they ever will about the workers.
What a dumbass. All she had to do was bring along the absentee ballot to show she hadn’t mailed it.
I thought that the Monitor used to present good reporting years ago. I guess that’s changed.
It was later said that he felt a mistake had been made because the amp was distorting the music past the point where it could be listened to, but who knows.
Marx’s political philosophy sucked. His analysis and critique of capitalism is quite relevant today, however.
No, Clinton is definitely NOT above reproach, but he wouldn’t have gotten anywhere near as much done on his agenda without the backing of the DLC. All I’m saying is look beyond the front-man in the con to the people running the game.
