We’ve already heard grumblings from El Rushbo and the wingosphere that the BP oil spill is “Obama’s Katrina” — but Mike Pence busted out an even fresher take on that today.
A top House Republican on Wednesday slammed President Barack Obama’s responsiveness to a massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, invoking the response to Hurricane Katrina.
[...]
Pence asserted that Obama’s response time was slow compared to Bush’s response in 2005, which was panned by Bush’s critics as aloof to the severity of flooding and damage in New Orleans.
See, the problem with the frame “Obama’s Katrina” is that it acknowledges that Bush screwed the pooch.
Can’t have that.

So, they were equally remiss. At least that’s settled. Back to the oil slick and where it’s headed.
Has anyone considered that Republicans are smoking crack?
Another completely dishonest Republican tactic: for one thing, there are currently no dead bodies rotting and floating in putrid water in New Orleans while the absent Feds congratulate themselves on a job well done in Washington DC. For another thing, the hurricane was over within days whereas this spill is continuing.
Both parties are terrible; the Republicans are particularly unapologetic and appalling in their dishonesty with the public.
alank @ 1
It is not settled the Obama administration has done all that could be done .
But alank heakuva job being one of our resident trolls though
Considered…?
And now, the appropriate response to Mike Pence:
Fuck off, Mikey.
If anyone can save the Democrats, the Republicans can.
Selected amnesia…why the sudden embrace of Bush? I thought the GOP was trying to distance themselves from the Bush presidency. By envoking the Bush years should help the Dems…
Ah Republicans! You do love to ignore facts and revise history, do you not? Please. Even the teabaggers aren’t buying this one.
If Mike Pence said it, it must be true. /s
B/T !
LOL … Excellent ! EDP !
Thank you. I like to stick to the simple and obscene when replying to Republican talking points.
more advice from that tragedy
don’t get stuck on stupid, son
Not to mention the fact that GWB’s administration had about a week advance notice of the hurricane and it’s likely path whereas there was no notice given regarding the occurrence of this disaster, which is NOT a natural disaster, it was man-made.
The GOPs just can’t seem to find a right side to get on with this disaster. Was the problem deregulation? Putting industry in charge of its own policing? Putting industry shills in charge of the government’s agency? Not caring what the environmental costs were?
There’s no GOP upside, but they still struggle to find one: Obama’s Katrina, that’s the ticket! Sadly, I’ve heard more Legacy Media types parrot this than GOPs.
I bet it comes from Frank Luntz or Roger Ailes.
And let’s not forget that in this case there are exactly zero people stranded on rooftops and in makeshift shelters without food or water.
This man made disaster would never have happened if the offshore drilling moratorium hadn’t been lifted.
by the way, did everyone see BP’s trial balloon meme that Shrimpers killed all those sea turtles ? apparently bobbleheads didn’t bite, it’s already off the crawlers
Most Republicans are happy to have drowned New Orleans. They are happy that they forced the poor – blacks and whites – out of the city. They are also happy that many had died. They were happy to turn the area Republican. That is the truth of the matter. Republicans are pond scum.
Except there never was a moratorium on offshore drilling off the Louisiana coast….
Yep. Whatever can’t be exploited to their advantage must be eliminated. People should have to pay attention in order to vote. Wish there was a fair, honest, unbiased way to make that happen.
I’m glad I didn’t see that to be honest. It would have raised my blood pressure almost certainly.
Last week’s Episode of Treme, the new HBO series about life after Katrina in New Orleans, featured a young man and older man finding the body of the younger man’s father. This was months after the storm. I don’t see anything like that happening with this oil slick.
And you’re right, on the other hand this is still happening. It’s getting worse. That’s one of the things Rachel Maddow has been really good about pointing out the past couple weeks. It’s getting worse.
No kidding.
The deal is that the GOP wants to take the heat off Bush for Katrina by forcing a subliminal and fact-free association of the name of our current president with that of the hurricane that ravaged New Orleans in 2005.
It’s similar to why they pursued the impeachment against Clinton even though it hurt them in the 1998 midterms: They wanted to be able to remove the stink from Nixon by saying that “at least he resigned before he could be impeached”, ignoring the fact that their anti-Clinton impeachment efforts were based on bogosities.
BP’s allegedly capped one of the three leaks as of early this morning. They’re hoping to get the other two contained by the end of the week. Fingers crossed!
Bogosities is now my word of the day. I’m going to use it in at least 5 sentences XD
And also, Obama not only had no advance warning, but BP had told everyone for days after the initial explosion and leak that it was a very minor leak that they’d have fixed soon.
I saw that story. My concern is with the fact that the information is coming from the same company that told us this spill was only 1,000 gallons a day. They’re fucking vicious liars only concerned about their image and their profits. Until our government officials inspect this “containment” and declare it satisfactory, I’m not buying it. And even then, my opinion of satisfactory and the government’s opinion of satisfactory differ greatly. As evidenced by HCR and FinReg.
Sorry for the rant an the language, I just see BP as another Big Business that’s fucking the little guys.
Not a problem- IT IS A FEATURE!
Here is how it works:
1. Deny that Bush II was a republican.
2. Deny that republicans were for offshore oil drilling.
3. Repeat Katrina + Oil spill = Democratic and Obama failure until everyone believes it.
4. Start claiming Bush II screwed the pooch?
This is the latest scheme to progress the republican party.
As to #1: that has been going on for years.
#2 That has just started… since the spill.
Google (“drill baby drill” not our slogan ) and the fifth of 10,400 returns is this The Hill article from May 4, 2010.
A few ‘highlights’:
“
Oh and also:
See the article for even more hypocrisy and stupidity.
#3: No doubt under way soon.
#4: Stay tuned to to your local media.
About that #2:
There is some evidence to prove that Republicans were for offshore oil drilling before they were against it… but are they against it yet? See the google for that.
Jane has a fresh cross-post already in progress: Galbraith, Baker & Auerbach: White House Should “Reconsider Apocalyptic Opposition” to Audit the Fed
Obama is not too different from Bush on policies, so why should his response in the Gulf be any different. Hell, Obama is not too different from the Tea Party on actual policies…except maybe immigration, we’ll have to see where he ends up.
Mike Pence, Fucktard Extraordinaire. What else is new?
He is the one who compared his well-fortified and -protected march through Baghdad with an Indiana summer market stroll, right?
This morning I had a glance at a time-line the White House put up on it’s blog. There wasn’t any delay to be seen. Unless perhaps Obama was getting warnings from BP in advance of the spill, like the warnings the National Weather Service was supplying for days in advance of Katrina making landfall.
You could fill pages and pages with all the brainless, heartless, vicious positions that lobotomy candidate has taken over the years. Tumbrel ballast, as far as I’m concerned.
Shit yua took the words right outa me mouth..☻☻☻ ♫ ♪ ♫
Pence continues to prove what a complete, moronic jerk he is and how little he gives a hoot about anyone but himself… Chimpy PROVED he was an incompetent ass along with most of his people… It’s a matter of PUBLIC RECORD.. You should try reading it sometime Mike, you helped make it so YOU OWN IT…dumbass..
The slogan for the Republicans should be “Selective History, Situational Ethics”.
Maybe they are pissed about Obama’s response cause John McCain didn’t get a cake!
In a way, there is evidence that Obama’s response has been worse than Bush’s.
1. Obama did not convene a high level White House until 2 days after the oil spill began. (Not so with Bush)
2. A high Coast Guard Admiral made a statement one day after the explosion and leak began, that no oil was leaking from the rig. She completely relied on information given to her by BP.
3. Obama failed to visit the area until 11 days after the explosion/leak began on April 20th. He only went to the Gulf on 2 May. Apparently he though the White House Correspondents dinner (with jokes) was more important and so was a meeting with Bono. In contrast, Bush flew over the affected Gulf coast area 2 days after the storm began and visited it 4 days after it began.
Then there’s the problem of causation. the oil spill is a man-made disaster; Katrina was not of course, and there is abundant evidence to indicate that Obama and his adminstration’s misguided policies directly led to this leak:
1. On April 2, 2010, Obama (saying that off shore drilling was much safer nowadays) reversed 27 years of policy and permitted off shore drilling. He essentially capitulated to Sarah Palin’s silly “Drill, Baby, Drill” cries. Note that the oil rig in question began being drilled on March 2009, and was completed in September, 2009, all during Obama’s watch.
2. The explosion/leak occurred 18 days later, on April 20, 2010.
3. The Washington Post is reporting that the Obama administration under Interior Secretary Salazar (an awful appointment by Obama, criticized by environmentalists when it was made) gave BP waivers so that BP did not have to file environmental impact statements for its Gulf drilling. That was a huge mistake; it meant that there really was no oversight by the Obama administration of what BP was doing.
4. WaPo is also quoting whistleblower sources that indicate that Obama’s Interior Ministry (under Salazar) essentially has kept on all the Bush people at the managerial levels. Hence little or no change.
5. According to OpenSecrets, Obama was the biggest recipient of BP financial political contributions in 2008.
I’m not trying to defend the hideous administration of George W. Bush. But in this instance, one of the worst environmental disasters of all time would never have happened had Obama not flip flopped on his campaign promises and permitted off shore drilling. Note that the leak began 18 days after he changed that policy.
Mike Putz?
If Obama would have rushed personally to the Gulf and sucked up that spilled oil. They would have accused Him of stealing that oil.
Liberman is quick to call for the accused to have their Citizenship revoked, so why can’t we revoke the Citizenship of stupid Republicans.
The truth is that even if the bomber in New York would have been successful and killed a bunch of people, He wouldn’t have begin to catch up with the amount of people the Republicans have killed with their useless wars, refusal to regulate, and by their defense of Big Industry and Money Interests.
Could the Republicans be more of a danger than the terrorists? They are.
I’m from Indiana. I know Mike Pence. Mike Pence is an asshole.
That says it all.
Shrill.
British Petroleum was to receive an award for its pollution control methods at an Interior Department- sponsored event yesterday. The agency, however postponed the event, with no confirmed date for when it will be held again. Fishing communities along coastlines are waiting with dread for the Transocean explosion-related spill to reach their shores. Fishing activities have been prohibited in the areas affected by the oil spill. In a situation like this, it would have been absurd to go ahead with the event, where one of the winners of the evening would have been BP with its “exemplary” safety record.
