Durbin Says “Bleeding Heart Liberals” Should Be Open to Medicare and Social Security Cuts

By: Jane Hamsher Thursday April 29, 2010 12:46 pm

Before you start hacking away at “entitlement programs” and telling little old ladies to suck it up and chow down with kitty, Dick (may I call you Dick?) how about a CBO score on the money that would be saved by a Medicare buy-in for businesses? I’m sure all those much-vaunted “small businesses” everyone is always gassing on about (you know, the “engines of economic growth”) would be delighted to see their health care costs cut 15%-30%. Think of what a good jobs creation measure it would be in a time of high unemployment.

Reid Press Conference Today on Immigration: Double Messaging Time

By: Jane Hamsher Thursday April 29, 2010 11:48 am

And thus the press gets their direct cue not to take Reid’s immigration efforts seriously. They get it (wink wink). This is how they all wind up running around “knowing” things, like the White House will never include a public option in the health care bill. Yet it keeps the credulous typing their fingers to a bloody pulp to the bitter end, insisting that Obama most certainly will because after all he mentioned the public option in his address to the joint session of Congress. And, of course, blaming Republicans.

Republican Consultant on GOP 2012 Presidential Field: “We Have Real [Expletive] Problems.”

By: Blue Texan Thursday April 29, 2010 10:30 am

Charlie Crist is yet another moderate not-wingnutty-as-Jim DeMint Republican to get eated by the Teabaggers (see also Bennett, Bob). And while this bloody purge may be emotionally satisfying to the Palinese Liberation Army*, it’s lousy politics, especially nationally.

Obama: No “Appetite” for Immigration Reform Now

By: Jane Hamsher Thursday April 29, 2010 9:26 am

On Monday, I asked whether the White House would put the screws to the Blue Dogs to pass immigration reform the way they did on health care, and the answer appears to be “no.” Rather, they will rely on their tried-and-true game plan for dealing with issues important to “f&%king r#%ard” liberals.

Another Mississippi High School Discriminates Against LGBT Student

By: Lisa Derrick Thursday April 29, 2010 8:59 am

Copiah County School District in Mississippi cut senior Ceara Sturgis completely out of the Wesson Attendance Center 2010 class yearbook after the senior’s long battle with school officials to include a photo of her wearing a tuxedo.

Arizona, Also Anti-Woman… As is Oklahoma

By: David Dayen Thursday April 29, 2010 8:25 am

Arizona is a medium-sized state, and they’ll be only the first to pass their own Stupak law. It’s part of the chipping away of abortion access that was an outgrowth of the federal health care debate. Those who didn’t want the health care bill to “become an abortion bill” caused this outcome, and as a result poor women will exist on a different tier than those who can afford to choose when to have a child.

Democrats: The Party of Results?

By: Jon Walker Thursday April 29, 2010 7:20 am

DNC Chair Tim Kaine has announced that Democrats will run on a platform of being the “results party”–a move that leaves me wondering whether it is stupid or simply the only choice for Democrats. . . because they can’t deny the fact that they fully control Washington. One hopes deciding to run as the party of results might encourage Democrats to actually do everything in their power, including using reconciliation, to actually deliver on some real results.

The Hazards of Tweeting from Guantanamo Bay

By: Spencer Ackerman Thursday April 29, 2010 6:59 am

As the courtroom cleared following the adjournment of Omar Khadr’s first day of pre-trial hearings, a Marine captain asked me if I could address “an internet rumor.” Uh, sure, I replied. She wanted to know: did I somehow find a way to tweet from inside the extremely-secure courtroom?

As Horizon Oil Slick Expands, Disingenuous Politicians Demand “Investigation”

By: Seymour Friendly Thursday April 29, 2010 6:01 am

As oil continues to spew into the Gulf from the leaking well left behind the wreck of the Deepwater Horizon, the pro-drilling Obama administration demands an “investigation” that drilling supporter Mary Landrieu attempts to use for political cover.
