Senate Health Care Bill Does Not Have “Independent Third Party Review” That Would Protect Breast Cancer Patients

By: Jon Walker Thursday April 22, 2010 11:45 am

Reuters reports that WellPoint is under federal investigation for singling out breast cancer patients and dropping their coverage “based on either erroneous or flimsy information.” They also report that language in the House bill would have protected these women, but it was removed in the Senate version of the bill because “lobbyists for WellPoint and other top insurance companies successfully fought proposed provisions of the legislation.”

GM Pays Back Government Loan 5 Years Early, Right-Wingers Wipe Egg from Faces

By: Blue Texan Thursday April 22, 2010 10:30 am

Remember this? “In the effort to reverse this lurch beyond the farthest left fringe of previous Democratic statist urges, individual Americans have a role to play. They have to say no to GM products and services until such time as the denationalization occurs,” said Hugh Hewitt.

WellPoint Targets Breast Cancer Patients for Recision

By: Jane Hamsher Thursday April 22, 2010 9:20 am

The fact that the health care bill was written by WellPoint for the benefit of Wellpoint is bad enough. The fact that Max Baucus celebrates this is worse. And the fact that WellPoint jammed the bill through with the help of Evan Bayh, who is adding to his personal fortune at the expense of breast cancer patients, is absolutely despicable.

56% of Californians Support Legalizing Marijuana Use

By: Jon Walker Thursday April 22, 2010 8:35 am

Fifty-six percent of adults living in the state think California should legalize the use of marijuana, while only 42% oppose, according to a new SurveyUSA poll. The level of support is basically unchanged from last year, when a Field Research poll found that 56% of registered voters in California supported legalizing and taxing marijuana for recreational use. And the poll is consistent with a recent CBS News poll showing that 55% of adults in “western” states support legalization, with only 41% opposed. California voters will be voting on a ballot initiative that would legalize, regulate, and tax cannabis. Currently, a strong majority of adults support the general idea, so it seems its fate will rest on the turnout demographics.

In with Immigration, Out with Climate Change?

By: David Dayen Thursday April 22, 2010 7:00 am

At this stage of the legislative calendar, the immigration reform and climate change bills are a zero-sum game. If immigration moves up, something else must move down, and that would be the climate bill. John Kerry, Lindsey Graham and Joe Lieberman plan to drop their version of a bill next week, but they’ve already lost two key Republicans, who have split off to try and push their own scaled-back bill.
