But that doesn’t stop the media from treating them like a huge social movement.
Coverage bias was most pronounced during the Health Care Reform votes when several hundred teabaggers on the Capitol grounds got a great deal of coverage, while a pro-immigration reform march at the same time drew a much bigger crowd, well into the tens of thousands, received virtually none.
So let the teabags steep in their inflated numbers, thanks to Arizona, on very short notice, now you’ll see what a real political protest looks like.
Protest organizers said on Wednesday outrage over the Arizona law — which seeks to drive illegal immigrants out of the state bordering Mexico — has galvanized Latinos and would translate into a higher turnout for May Day rallies in more than 70 U.S. cities.
Some of these rallies, like Los Angeles alone in 2006 may (just may, remember short notice) draw half-a-million. Suck.on.that. Arizona.
Not that you’ll see much coverage. After all, some mid-50ish white woman from Knoxville is screaming and carrying a sign telling the federal government to stay out of her “soshal securitee” and demanding those socialists let her drink liquor when she’s carrying her handgun. And that’s damn-fine television.

About Firedoglake
Drats, that’s how I’ve always pronounced it. Back to English class for me.
¡Pobre Arizona!
I can think of only one reason why the Tea partiers get such exaggerated coverage: they represent everything the government and media want Americans to be. The Tea Partiers are the elite’s ideal version of you and me–bigoted, fearful of government, eminently susceptible to corporate manipulation. All those big lefty protests, by contrast, are the opposite of what they want.
I broke my self-imposed boycott of CNN and watched Michael Moore on Larry King Tuesday night. He spoke of a rally scheduled for today (I think) on Wall Street comprised of union members. I have heard nothing of this in the corporate media.
Maybe if they brought guns and acted like neanderthals?
Rally
Good morning, pups. It’s Collins and Kristof today. In “Red, Blue and Broke” Ms. Collins has a question: Your elected officials work hard to create as many disasters as possible, and where’s the credit? Mr. Kristof is in Dor, Sudan. In “Winning the Worm War” he says former President Jimmy Carter’s plan to eradicate Guinea worm worldwide is succeeding because local villagers are involved in the effort.
Here they are.
The coffee and tea are ready, and I’ve got blueberry pancakes for breakfast. I think perrylogan has hit on something. For the life of me I can’t come up with another explanation that covers the unending Tea Party coverage. It’s an idea that depresses the hell out of me, but it seems to ring true. Have a great day.
demanding those socialists let her drink liquor when she’s carrying her handgun.
I’ve got no problem with that.
well – so long as there’s separation: the Smoking Section, the Non-Smoking Section, and the Armed-Drunk-and-Batshit-Crazy Section.
Sounds like a Saturday night to me….
here’s what you’ll see, even in “liberal new york”
every single news broadcast will end with the “concervative” spin, in the name of “ballance”.
it doesn’t matter which issue, if it’s a concervative issue it ends with the concervative spin, if it’s a democratic or progressive issue it ends with the concervative spin
I love making this point to the people who still believe the “media is liberal” and once made all I do is turn on a news station and ask them if they want to bet which position will end the clip
progressive ralleys are never covered more then being acknowledged and most of the time they are not even acknowledged
the brutal fact though, it’s not really a concervative media either, it’s simply a corporate media, they promote the corporate point of view, once in a great while that corporate point of view will be the same as the democratic point of view (for instance immigration reform benefits corporations)
but in general, the corporate position is also the “concervative” postion
however now, with democrats in power, corporations donating to democrats as much as or more then republicans, the roles have homogonized
Down here we get the straight Republican line. Balance, schmalance…
Se Se puede!
You want direct action the media has to pay attention?
Start planning some boycotts and general strikes.
You screw with a right winger’s wallet, and they howl like a French ambulance. AaAaAaAa!
The right was melting down over the last “Day without Immigrants” for a full week before hand on every channel.
¡Sí se puede, Arizona!
Hold the demonstrations at the media outlets. In their face.
And they don’t want to tax the wealthy, because “the wealthy create jobs.”
recent media coverage might make one think the country’s gone nuts
What’s up with Va ? Are they trying to move the clock back to the 50′s,the 1850′s ?
“I don’t need teevee.” Repeat as necessary. You’d be amazed how easy it is.
Exactly. The German’s don’t celebrate a Nazi-history month. The Russians don’t celebrate a Soviet-history month. Why do our slave states celebrate “Confederate History Month”? Are they somehow proud of their crimes against humanity and their military defeat.
hey Jayt. It’s good to know who you’re dealing with. There’s a saloon (backwater of MO) I stopped at for lunch while passing thru on my way back from CA. Visited a buddy from the service. They proudly point up to the ceiling, explaining which are the ‘new’ bullet holes from last Saturday night.
Works for them
quote the contrary
the tea partiers actually lobby against their own stated interests, the wealthy don’t create jobs, middle class jobs create wealth, the wealthy simply turn the truth around, as they do all the time, getting people to advocate against themselves, their wives and their children
the wealthy have had their taxes reduced since reagan, they wealth has increased exponentially, the middle class has had their taxes raised and the middle class wages have gone down
the tea partyiers are simply mindless marionettes, their pupett masters tell them to pull out their own teath and there they go doing it
for instance, the boston tea party was NOT a revolt against the king raising taxes, the original tea party was a rovolt against the king LOWERING taxes but yea, the concervatives have managed to turn that brutal fact into the reverse for what the tea party actually represented
these are mindless marionttes plain and simple
Swim is up…
Just want to point out that the vast majority of coverage of the coverage of Tea Partiers outside of Fox News has been negative.
Equal coverage of the immigration rallies would consist of a litany of polls showing how ignorant the protesters are, how their support of immigration is basically a cover for their racism against whites, how they are selfishly seeking welfare, how they are a burgeoning danger to our peaceful society, how the democrats are co-opting the movement for political gain, and then a small marginalized group fighting a losing battle to defend them.
Not picking sides here, but just remember that media opinion of the tea party, and a great deal of public opinion, is very, very spiteful, so be careful what you wish for.
“or instance, the boston tea party was NOT a revolt against the king raising taxes, the original tea party was a rovolt against the king LOWERING taxes but yea, the concervatives have managed to turn that brutal fact into the reverse for what the tea party actually represented”
Note: The Tea Act that lead released the East India Company from tariffs, but left the Townsend duty in place over the colonists, in order to maintain the pay of British colonial officers and to maintain the British’s assertion that he was within his right to pass taxation upon the colonists.
The sentiment was that the East India Trading Company and the Parliament were engaging in law making that exploited the colonies. Colonial governors gained a level of independence from those they governed, and the monopoly granted by the act to the East India Trading Company pushed American merchants toward financial ruin.
So back in the day, when government collaborated with enormous corporations to exploit foreign interests, skew taxation towards the lower class, eliminate smaller competitors, and entrench the governing class, protesters would tell them to take their goods and shove it, even if it actually cost them less.
Now we take our subservience and our cheap gas and shower praise upon our fearless leaders.
Blah Blah Blah…
Apparently none of you know that the invasion by illegals has been a deliberate, organized, and funded movement. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajkAP_M4ZAM
If it costs tax dollars, you are all for it – doesn’t matter the consequences. You don’t live with the effects of illegals invading your state. You don’t have your curriculum dumbed down to the lowest-English speaking…shove it.
Red states typically contribute the least in federal taxes, receive the most in federal subsidies, and their reps complain loudest about federal deficits. This may be one of the points Gail was trying to spit out, or not.
You do not know your history, or are a progressive liar trying to change history. The Boston Tea Party was held because of the stamp tax. An increase in taxes, not a decrease. History is never kind to the progressives.
We can not wait for the commie protests. They are usually violent. The riot police cracking union heads? Priceless. Painting Nazi symbols on the halls of Phoenix city hall and throwing water bottles at the cops is just the start of the damage done by the leftists. America, in an election year, will be watching.
Um, no. It did NOT raise taxes on tea, but it did establish (actually enforced) a monopoly for the East India Company. it actually LOWERED prices on tea, but the colonists objected to the principle of Parliament taxing it with the colonies having a voice…
http://www.boston-tea-party.org/tea-act.html
talk about not knowing your history, take a look in the mirror
“the stamp act” was RESCINDED almost a decade before the boston tea party and had NOTHING to do with it
the original party was a revolt against the king LOWERING taxes
tiz a fact
now go study up and see what else you can try to find
