Charlie Crist is yet another moderate not-wingnutty-as-Jim DeMint Republican to get eated by the Teabaggers (see also Bennett, Bob). And while this bloody purge may be emotionally satisfying to the Palinese Liberation Army*, it’s lousy politics — especially nationally.
Republicans’ ideological civil war, the recent passage of a controversial Arizona immigration law, and an uncertain shortlist of Obama challengers all raise questions about its ability to compete on a presidential level.
“From a presidential perspective, we have real [expletive] problems,” said one GOP operative based in Washington, D.C., who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the state of the party frankly. “From a national candidate perspective, we have real problems.”
The politics of the Quitter and DeMinted play really well in the Old Confederacy — not so much anywhere else. Meanwhile, the RedStaters are still convinced McSame lost because he was insufficiently wingnutty. Since the GOP base is on a mission to purge every Republican who doesn’t think Obama is a Kenyan Marxist, they’re going to have a hell of a time finding someone that threads all the needles.
Surely there’s another Bush around.

I’m hoping that name is political poison for good and always.
“Surely there’s another Bush around.”
Oh, BT, you had to go and say it. I’ll bet this thread doesn’t get more than 5 comments long before the Obama/Bush comparisons take over.
Myself, I’d rather discuss the grooming of Jeb. Hahaha, like THAT’s gonna happen!
“Myself, I’d rather discuss the grooming of Jeb.”
Is that anything like the grooming of a savannah baboon?
*Palinese Liberation Army* – BT
*Aack, I have visions of Arafat in Hooker Boots, now*
Should I hold my breath waiting for the “Republican Party in Disarray” stories?
They’d have a lot more problems if the party currnetly in the majority would act more like Democrats.
Oh boy, here we go.
Lately, I’ve been trying to limit my use of the ‘H-word’ to describe my feelings about our political future.
It’s become another ruined part of the language, sort of like compassionate-conservatism, it clearly doesn’t mean what we thought it meant.
I also hate to admit that if you stand Jeb up next to what the tea-bagging wingnuts are considering as candidates lately, he starts to look almost reasonable.
My disappointment in Obama now rivals my disappointment in W’s re-election, and I would have thought that impossible only a short while ago.
heh, don’t bother.
Don’t underestimate Jeb. He is as evil as his brother, and a lot smarter.
Sort of like O?
I’m wondering if the very purpose of the GOP whipping up the teabaggers is to make somebody like Jeb look more palatable. It would mean that they are capable of more subtlety than I give most of them credit for but it’s certainly well within the realm of possibility. Nothing else makes sense about why the Republicans would whip them into a frenzy and then put them all over the media.
same here *deepdepressedlingering sigh*
Yes, but how opportunistic is he? Will he jump on the teabagger wagon if it will get him elected?
Wait, don’t answer that. He’s a Bush, what was I thinking?
Not me. I never thought he was much of a progressive. In fact, out of that large primary field, he was second or third from last on my list. Hard to be disappointed when the only expectation I had was better than Bush. And that bar is incredibly low.
Not all snakes are so stupid. He’s more dangerous than his brother because he can make himself talk the talk.
“He’s more dangerous than his brother because he can make himself talk the talk.”
‘zactly. And I remember reading (probably here) that it was actually supposed to be Jeb in 2000, not the idiot son.
It’ll be Romney. The Republicans always go with the next in line. We will not see another Bush in our lifetimes.
You owe my university a new keyboard for that “Palinese Liberation Army”.
was Georgie W. next in line?
That is awesome, and it’s not mine (see the asterisk).

In AZ expect us to vote in record numbers why we are angry! But tell me how many Hispanic GOP voters will turn out now? If the Percentage of Hispanic GOP voters drops more than it does for Dems a very
likely possibility then what chance does the GOP have?
The more racist a state the more worried Hispanic voters will be that they are next.
Rubio in Florida assuming he is not arrested will have a hard time explaining to his darker and more spanish accented voters why they should vote GOP.
His own attempts to win Tea Party votes might get him tagged as a traitor by the Florida Cuban voters.
Don’t forget the glasses…
Would any of the Corporate Wing of the GOP accept VP to Sarah?
Who exactly does that category include? By my math, I see only Willard, and there’s no way he’d play second fiddle to the Quitter.
Whats the percentage of Hispanic voters in the South the more racist a state the more worried that they will be next after AZ to be forced to carry papers.
What are the chances that this prick will emerge? Maybe not 2012, but he appears to be on the rise.
He could definitely be a Veep candidate, but I’m not sure “Let’s let old people eat cat food” will be a popular platform.
Corporate GOPers include Bush Big Oil. Mitt Romney bain capital hedgefund, anyone who runs, owns or just has a lot of money invested in big business.
Second tier Corporate GOPers people not rich until they started saying what Corporate America wanted them too
Newt, Rush, etc.
There is some overlap Drill baby Drill Sarah certainly is a big Oil GOPer but she is also a member of the Fundamentalist or Fundy wing of the GOP.
Their is overlap between both groups and the racist branch of the GOP who the GOP claims does not exist.
I am open to other suggestions of other branches of the GOP.
The Tea baggers are anti tax, free market corporate tools and racists many are also fundies but their first allegiance seems to be fundy and the idea Obama because he’s black is the Anti Christ and therefore anything he says must be opposed.
Trickledown Rubio has said recently that the AZ ID check bill was a bad thing. Maybe he said it was not a good thing, or something lighter.
With any remarks in defense of latinos (like himself) Rubio risks losing his white supremacist teabagger base support. OTOH, he desperately needs his South Florida Cuban/latino base also.
What a quandary.
Trapped between opposing pieces that he thought were his Perfect:)
No self made man all Corporate GOPers are would take second to a woman the Corporate Board room culture is just to male.
Good point.
Fun reading. Of course all speculation here + $3 or so will get any of a cuppa joe somewhere. Still fun to speculate.
While I’ve been frightened by the thought of JEB ooozing his way into the slime of being POTUS – it could definitely happen – my bet, today, is still on Bible Spice. Still it’s far enough out that just about anything can happen.
It is intersting to consider the Tea Party. Seems to me they’ve mostly been astroturfed to: a) demonize BHO, and by extension all Dems, as completely as possible, b) demonize HCR, in order to make it as corporate friendly as possible (in this they were quite successful), and c) now get these fools to believe that social security is an “entitlement” that none of us, except our corporate oligarch overlords, “deserve.”
Frankly, I don’t think the corporations who run this country really care if an R or a D runs or wins or whatever. Seriously: what’s it to them? Both parties are beholden to the corporations and will scurry about doing what ever they’re bid to do.
The “problem” is only for the RNC and the Republics in office, and as Dick Cheney would say: SO????????
I just don’t think she wants to run. Why bother? She’s got the perfect gig now. All this “governing” stuff is much too much work.
The anonymous “GOP operative in DC” is blowing smoke up our collective asses.
The Republicans are in good shape for the presidential election of 2012. They have numerous viable candidates so now it is a question of winnowing out some of the more nuttier one (Ron Paul) and zeroing in on Obama’s weaknesses.
Yeah, they’re numerous. But they all suck.
I hadn’t thought about that angle, but now that you mention it, it makes a lot of sense.
Why hold out for a $Billion, if it requires you to do all that work, when you can make a few hundred $Million just by flying around the country cheer-leading idiots who don’t give a shit if you know what you’re talking about.
But what are her handlers going to say when she counts up her chips and decides she has enough to quit and go home?
Wonder if the Tea Party will be the cause of the next election’s “Perot Effect”? So much ideological purity, so little time to find IPWs (Ideologically Pure Wingnuts).
And so it goes…
She has handlers?
Whereas Palin obviously doesn’t like to work much, she does adore the attention. So, I wouldn’t count her out just on that basis; the idea of being president I am sure is totally enthralling to her, with little regard to the responsibility of being the president.
Yupper. The only reason he didn’t run in 2000 instead of his older, dumber brother is because he and his wife have corruption-related baggage that even with a very compliant national corporate media makes running for the White House rather difficult for him.
Palinese Liberation Army. I love it. The PLA has already locked both Patty Democracy and Rational Thought Hearst in a closet filled with mispelled signs prepared for the next Open Carry Rally at a stocked private hunting club. Though press releases and facebook entries haven’t had the impact of the KSAN tapes, I’m sure that naming the next offspring “Cinque” will cause more than a few “starbursts.” Hopefully this won’t end up badly. But it’s entirely plausible to envision a group of teabaggers (holed up in the Wasilla public library) finally surrendering when the electricity gets shut-off (in a cost saving measure due to lower than expected tax revenuues.)
No, it was Uncle Dick’s turn. He’s been waiting since 1969, don’t you know.
