Firedoglake is looking to develop mobile applications for our site. We’re looking for folks in the FDL community with experience developing mobile apps for the iPhone, Droid, and Blackberry platforms.
The apps we’re looking to build include geographic data, content syndication, and database synchronization. If you or someone you know has the chops to work with us, drop us a line at firedoglake.web@gmail.com.

About Firedoglake
Late Late Nite has lots of Techies have Suz and ES send the word out depending on the day you never know who is lurking Nahant I think might be able to help.
Excellent, I will do that.
For us old foogies who are barely computer literate, could you re-post this in English?
It is definitely worth posting in LLN.
I’m a techie that’s frequently at Suz’ LLN, but I’m not a mobile app developer. I checked my professional network – not seeing any Linked In connections that fit either.
You’ve got some competition – Apple and Motorola both are looking for over 25 Mobile App developers each right now. Simply Hired shows 382 Mobile App developer positions in silicon valley.
She’s looking for people that can make FDL work really well on phones.
Geographic data: probably help create face to face FDL connections. Help advertisers at FDL reach like minded local customers as well.
Syndication: Push FDL content to subscribers.
Database synchronization: make sure comments are posted in order, no duplication.
Dear Jane,
I really like it when you talk like that.
I’m a developer but I’ve never developed mobile apps before.
And android > all
Dang, it’s moments like these I wish I were more an app developer than a database junkie.
HuffPo has an Iphone app. You might ask Arriana who did her app.
Apps are much better than using the brower to get the site. I welcome having that capability. Thank you Jane.
I had to get Mike to write it because I didn’t understand what we’re asking for.
I think what it boils down to is: if we don’t understand it, it ain’t us that he’s looking for.
;)
Even if you do understand it it may not be you he’s looking for. :-)
Let’s hope the free speech geniuses at Apple don’t find your app “offensive”.
Ah, so this is like a pre-interview test: “To help us determine whether or not you are qualified for this position, you must demonstrate that you understand what we are looking for . . .”
Please don’t forget Zune HD users. We love FDL, too, and with Windows 7 Series Phones coming before X-mas it’d be good to plan for that potentially huge market.
Rob
Lol. Have to filter Marcy to make sure she doesn’t say BJ like on TV?
And most commenters would need to be filtered as well.

My friend told me I sounded ridiculous and incongruous this weekend and I was just talking about downloading apps.
Jane’s right, of course, in that if you don’t know what it means you’re probably not going to be much help right now. If you have one of those devices and are good at describing symptoms, they might be able to use you as a tester later.
Just for the record:
geographic data: Usually referred to as GIS (geographic information system). Basic idea is tying information to a place. Like what you see on Google maps. Here’s an example from the Pacific NW Seismic Network (PNSN).
content syndication: Getting information out to users who want it, preferably without bugging those who don’t.
database synchronization: If you have data in more than one location, database synchronization is what you do to make sure the information is the same everywhere.
is there such a thing as being *so* utterly hopeless and unqualified so as to be perfect for the job?
never mind…
on edit: I do know several people with iPhones – *and* several who have, and even appear to use, Blackberries.
I think I’m your guy.
That’s true of almost all tech jobs.
I’m currently trying to figure out how to pitch myself for a position with a statistical software company that’s moving into High Performance Computing. They want people with experience with a somewhat obscure statistical modeling language – I don’t have that experience. I do have experience with the parent language, and with parallel programming in general. Hiring manager probably would see I’d be a good fit, but I’ve got to make it past the HR filter first.
A truly comprehensive list might be one of the largest sed scripts ever.
Win7 should be a great phone OS… I have been running it since last August and it has been very stable, unlike VISTA although it wasn’t a problem for me….
Hey TCU thanks for the H/T but I don’t write apps. drat wish I could be some help.. I do Sys Admin stuff for windows including servers and networks… But I will talk to some of my old SW engineer friends and see…
I knew someone would understand that!
You wouldn’t want to say this, of course, but the language is usually the least important thing. There are subtleties to all of them, of course, but the most important thing is to know the methods and the ideas behind it. I never did any parallel programming, for instance, so I don’t have a good idea in my head which problems are best suited to being broken into parallel tasks. That’s a concept you have to develop before you’re effective.
I love Posix. It’s a programming environment built around an OS. I used to amaze people by taking mounds of network data, then filtering and analyzing it using simple tools like grep, sed, awk, and gnuplot. Days or weeks later, someone would finally write a Windows program that would do the same thing, and folks would extol the virtues of just being able to point and click. But they couldn’t point and click right away, which is what Posix gives you.
Yes.
See “Goodling, Monica” or “Gonzalez, Alberto”.
I completely disagree. An iPhone formatted version of a site is much better than custom apps (there’s a WordPress plug-in to do that for you mostly automatically by the way for you folks hosting blogs running WordPress), and I suspect that you’ll have a hard time getting an app that does nothing more than redisplay web content into the App Store at this point. I’m actually shocked that HuffPo is able to get their updates to the app through the approval process.
About the only reason I can see for doing something like HuffPo is if you set it up as a means for viewing content offline, otherwise an iPhone specific site template and some slick javascript should do anything you need.
Good luck.
I’m an iPhone/iPad developer, but is this for making a mobile version of the website or doing an actual app on the platforms?
I can’t do it, but this is a great idea!
Jane, I’ll have my son contact you. He’s a senior level mobile app developer and architect He’s been at the forefront since conception. – his.
His name is Zac Bowling, he’s already your “friend” on FB.
Fantastic Idea. Hope it is possible.
As I often tell myself while reading job postings – if you don’t understand it, you don’t have the skills to do it.
Sigh. Wish I did. That would be waaaaay cool. It would go top of my resume: “Developed mobile app for top activist blog Firedoglake”.
Well, maybe I can hope for a phone that will use it. That’s a stretch, even.
Oops. Shoulda read the comments. I see Jane already gave you the same answer. I owe Jane a beverage…whatever you want, Ma’am.
thanks nahant, any advice you could give would be much appreciated.
That would be great! I’ll be on the lookout for him.
I agree with you for the most part, but this particular position is tuning the platform for customers. Knowing I can pick up the language quickly and have good performance analysis skills is all good and well, but I need to be able to read code and see that performance improvements don’t affect correctness. I should be able to fall back on the grammar for the language, and my knowledge of its parent language and be fine.
And Peterr: Thanks for the support. I had a pretty positive interview with a major tech company on April 1; they asked me to supply background check information to a third party a week later. No decision yet, and apparently it’s because the background check isn’t being conducted. I’ve checked with 3 of 4 references and none have been called. Pinged my prospective manager yesterday and she said things are taking longer than she expected. Connecting the dots – company doing check will get a call from HR, do their job and verify I do have degrees, work history, references, etc I claim. I’m hoping for an offer next week.
In the meantime still looking for work.
I sent an email to my daughter and to a friend that is doing IT development for a news aggregation site.
Everyone is busy after a couple of years of hard to find work (it is still hard to find 9 to 5 with benefits) – but if they have time I am sure they will contact you.
Good luck – I hated the job hunt between jobs – indeed being retired feels a bit like those job hunt days as the money goes out and not enough comes in.
You obviously speak the language (I am reading “the grammar for the language, and my knowledge of its parent language” as C++ or C# in something like Java or some scripting language – and I know I am wrong – machine coding or assembly or using a different optimized for say calculation and matrix manipulation language like APL in a C or C++ program are old skills that were income producing and then a hobby for me but now just date the point that I shut down the hobby). It is hard to believe how fast outsourcing destroyed so many American jobs. Good luck – my prayers are with you.
See what I can do re: my SW engineer friends Jane…does sound like the way to go..
Hi Jane. I sent you an email. This is Zac
It seems we have a bunch of talent here maybe the FDL teches can pitch Jane about other ideas to help the site be more accessible, easier to use, different online ways to make cash etc and most of all whats in the future for the net?
