Last night we had the first night of our contest to name FDL’s marijuana campaign. We were going to have the semifinal voting tonight, but I changed my mind.
I’m having too much fun being back at Late Nite again, and Mike Whitney decided he wanted to expand the contest to everyone on our email list, so we’re continuing the contest for a second inspired night.
I said last night that first prize would be a DVD of High: The True Tale of American Marijuana, second prize would be a copy of copy of Marijuana is Safer: So Why Are We Driving People to Drink, and that I’d come up with a third prize by tonight.
Instead, we have a SPECIAL PRIZE FOR EVERYONE just for playing…co-author of Marijuana is Safer, Steve Fox of the Marijuana Policy Project, emailed me say that they’re offering a FREE DOWNLOAD of the book to everyone until midnight tonight in honor of the contest!
As Steve says, “the book is a primer on marijuana advocacy in general, including an overview of the history of prohibition, as well as the strongest traditional arguments in favor of reform and responses to the traditional arguments against reform.”
Since we’re going to be doing a lot more around pot in the coming months, take advantage of this great opportunity, say thanks to Steve for this incredibly generous offer, and download away.
Then join me in the comments for a second night of competition. Entries must be five words or less in length and entered here to qualify. Below are the inspired entries from last night. Oh and if anyone has ideas for second and third prize, lemme know.

About Firedoglake
Pot puts me to sleep, so perhaps I should say gnite.
A question about the rules: can members of the International Association of Munchies Manufacturers participate, or is that too much of a conflict of interest?
We know you come for the potheads, not the pot.
Hi pups!
What a sweet deal on the download! I don’t dare do it from my work machine on the road, dammit…
Hi Jane and thanks Steve for the download!
no conflict of interest I can see
Pretty sweet, huh?
Weed out Prohibition!
In this case, I think we can make an exception for astro turfers. :)
Yep, sure is!
Hopefully belch will get my email in time and download it for me.

Just don’t anyone try to smoke the astroturf, or bake it into brownies. That’ll give you cancer for sure.

Thanks Jane. I got good news from the doc, maybe helping creative juices a bit. :-)
The whole idea behind this contest, this thread is SO firedoglake. So hilarious, so creative, so goofy. I love it!
I wish I had more time to spend here.
For any newbie pups, fdl has had some notable contests. Just a couple of examples:
The Dick Cheney poetry contest: Dickfest
Tedfest.
I’m headed back out to the greenhouse to think of some ideas for this contest.

Jane, Lid for 3rd?
Make the Green Giant Jolly! (I know we can’t use that one as it’s a trademark. Just a bit of fun)
I love all the creativity, but a campaign name has to let everyone know what it is about in an instant, be succinct, and appear serious.
End Cannabis Prohibition!
hahaha! Not near green enough…

Did it work?
Third prize: Glass bong and 3 packs of rolling papers of winners choice.
Silly rabbit! Who needs papers when ya got a bong?!
Can I copy please?
OT from another front in the drug war: Alaska blogger Gryph is claiming Levi Johnston’s mom (out on parole for oxy sales) is saying Bristol lied under oath today in the Knoxville semi-hacker trial.
Tough to swallow a bong when confronted by the ‘authorities’.
Bailout ahead! Yes, Weed can!
Of course!
Liberty. Legalize Marijuana.
We may have downloaded before some of the slogans got entered. Just to be double sure, enter it again — one of the reasons I put up the list, so people could check.
The other one is, I just like them.
“Tokers of the World Unite” is better
nah
hence the “LOLOL!”
So many great ideas, just awesome to see so many great people coming together on this.
And a FREE BOOK!
We’re voting for a freedom.
(enter Connecticut Texan accent)
Resubmitted. The acronym is REAL (as in Get REAL, but that would be more than five words).

How very old-school. My sentiments exactly, better to leave no evidence around.

Grass is for lovers.

I dunno. I’ve got writer’s block today something fierce.
If you are just sitting around smoking tonight, I invite you to watch the embedded movie in this diary post. You won’t be disappointed.

Thanks for posting the link to the free download, Jane! I really encourage members of your community to visit the site linked to in your post. The free pdf download of the entire book is only available until midnight tonight (PST – two and a half hours from now). More than 15,000 people have downloaded the book already — and we want as many people as possible to do so before the offer ends.
Keep up the great work!
How many megabytes is it?
What format?
Weed Like To Thank You!
I ask that cuz SOME Folks have limited memory left on their hard drive.
Other’s might be on dialup, and the file size might be prohibitive.
Other’s, might have problems with the file TYPE, and conversions to read, etc.
great slogan, awful song
Nice Daavvidd!
15.2 pdf
Yeah, right up there with Ann Murray, Snowbird, and Tony Tenielle and Muskrats.
*G*
i didn’t see spocko’s from last night’s late night @ 39 on the list above, so i sent it in an entry form, crediting him (maybe he didn’t actually enter it last night), but it’s my favorite one so far, as i think it’s the one that will work best:
National Security Drug Regulation Program.
PDF format 15.2MB
I just downloaded it. Thanks Jane!!
Ha ha ha… it’s so bad. terrible terrible.
That’s not too bad, 15 mb, in a pdf . . . doable for most.
Thanks ES! *G*
*waves*
Thanks to you also K . . .
3rd prize: a copy of Cheech and Chong’s “Up in Smoke” or “Big Bambu” ?
Thanks so much Steve, this is great. It’s an amazing book and everyone should read it. We really appreciate you making it available for us.
It may not be the very worst version, though. Did Jim Nabors ever cover GGG?
Excellent suggestion. Don’t Cheech & Chong have a new DVD?
Been meaning to ask you, isn’t weed somewhat legal in AK?
Oh, god – he did!
The first half of the joint is legal, but by the time you get to the nub, you’re in misdemeanor territory.
California Be Loaded
Hi Jane, Hey Firedogs – this is the like the FDL bouncehouse of old – rockin’ and y’all are on fire ! I wouldn’t know where to start voting
thank you Steve Fox ! we’re definitely going to need to get edumucated –
can’t wait to hit refresh to see what you crazy kids have come up with :D
That sounds backasswards enough for Palin country.
And here i thought you all had a five plant (max) rule.
The Great American Pot Smoke-out
It is like the FDL bouncehouse of old.
I’m liking being back at late nite. I may not be so easily dethroned.
I’m thinking we may have to extend the contest once we have the slogan winners — graphic adaptations. Stickers, poster, video tag, mobile ap?
I suppose I’d have to know what a mobile ap actually is. Never liked the iphone myself but I hear they’re somewhat popular.
I forgot I thought of this one earlier today:
Prop Haight Saves the State!
Why Can’t Weed Be Friends?
When my kids were young I never had pot around. Things changed when they got turned on in HS and later. Alaska has the most lenient pot possession and growing laws in the USA, at least for the general population. But there is nothing here compared to the California clubs, and I hear it is almost impossible to get doctors to sign statements recommending you for medical marijuana, which is legal here.
ET Jr could easily get medical pot in Arcata, where he lives, for his scoliosis, but he wouldn’t qualify up here on that basis.
Oh, and here is some encouraging news just coming out of California…
http://cbs5.com/watercooler/california.marijuana.legalization.2.1648704.html
“In the poll, conducted for CBS 5 by SurveyUSA, it found that 56 percent of Californians support legalization and just 42 percent oppose it. Only three percent were unsure.
“Support for legalizing marijuana was the strongest among young voters, according to the poll. Three out of every four people in the 18 to 34 age group favored legalization.”
This was not, however, a survey of likely voters. It was just “adults.”
doobie doobie doo…
I actually am not a big fan of teh dope, mostly I feel dumb and dumber when I have (say it) inhaled. Worst evah was eating it. OMG.
But also. I DID remember it, and I do think it’s pretty good, it covers a few bases. Also. ;)
Oh yeah, like any messaging, the message takes many forms for the formats it’s to be deployed upon or into.
Logo’s, different formats for the logo.
Different digital applications.
Different marketing applications, from Press Releases (different for radio, tv, or blogs) to the graphics to rep the press releases.
And more, but you know it all from Hollywood, one of the BEST sources of how to diversify marketing intent for effectiveness.
I had a professor of PR, she worked with Roy Disney.
I was lucky, to learn what I did from her.
;-)
A Plethora of verbiage, images, and messages, all to be crafted and tailored to send the right message to the right audience in the right manner.
Communications, it’s intense!! (and should be)
weed better legalize sanity now
I’ve been trying to get someone to cross the poll results with a likely turnout model for November, but haven’t been successful. Just wanted to see the results.
Inhale…we haven’t focused it, but it’s fundamental to this campaign.
Don’t let CA fail. Inhale.
Finally, before shutting down for the night, I will toss out a slogan suggestion. It gets to the heart of what needs to be done, by FDL and others…
Marijuana: Change minds, change laws
Ganja We Can Believe In
I think this ballot initiative (is that what it is?) would seriously DRIVE turnout for our side. Sort of like g,g,g on their side.
yes ! extending the contest would be fabu I’m less than two weeks away from getting my first big girl Mac – can not wait to take it out for a graphic spin !
Prohibition Or Taxes?
Cost Or IncoMe?
A Joint a Day Keeps the Copper Away.
I like it.
Oh excellent. I think that would be a superb way to break it in!
Jail Makes Hippies Mean.
Second prize could be a copy of the Tolkien Reader. Unless, of course, you think it could be hobbit forming.

Pot calling the Kettle – Dude
Inhale Sanity – Exhale Packed Jails
A pot for every (bartered) chicken.
Free download is sweet!
I’d like to recommend “From Chocolate to Morphine” by Andrew Weil available free at google books – also via various torrent sites. One of the better texts for drug education.
I try to stay away from chocolate. It can lead to harder drugs like coffee, or so I’ve been told.
to be blunt: legalize it.
marijuana tax revenue: the new contact high
Freedom to have and hold.
Bake-On
Andrew Weil is pretty well respected by the MSM which is surprising given his history with Tim Leary and Ram Dass. His “Natural Mind” is also a nice book on the subject of drug use, but I think From Chocolate to Morphine belongs in High School drug education classes.
Defend your right to smoke, grow and share.
Too long and blatantly plagiarized from Yippie/High Times posters for Smoke Ins in late 70s.
Restore freedom of consciousness.
Light(en) up, Regulate Marijuana!
No ‘Jane no gain
That is a great one.
And finally…
Get High, Stay High.
The presence of the marijuana initiative on the ballot CHANGES any “likely voter’ model.
In Wisconsin, with word just coming down that the Jacki Rickert Medical Marijuana Act will not get a floor vote before the legislative session ends tomorrow, we’re gearing up a series of local advisory referenda. (Wisconsin has no statewide initiative process, but we can place advisory measures on local ballots fairly easily.) One side effect will be a boost in turnout in the communities we select, which will include all the smaller college towns.
Pass it along: weed heals
Two things: revenue is THE major talking point/angle in the Cali and OR campaigns, and overlooked in Oregon’s is how much deregulated hemp production could mean to the green economy there, fitting in perfectly with legislatively set goals in those industries. Plus we have the nationally leading seed crop land to do it!
So perhaps it’s a little too narrow, but let me suggest Hemp is Money
Where there’s smoke there’s firedgos was mine, but I gotta say I much prefer “Fire up the vote”.
Tho maybe “light up the vote” would be better

…I’m too late, hunh?
Home De Pot
I was driving yesterday and thought of “Where there’s smoke, there’s Firedoglake,” but then I saw it was already submitted. But I also agree that something along the “Fire up the vote” is good. Perhaps this…
FDL: Sparking up a movement
or
Sparking up a marijuana movement
or (since some people want to get away from using “marijuana”)
Sparking up a cannabis campaign
or (with multiple meanings for “sparking”)
Sparking up a cannabis conversation
Nope, we got you, Cliff.
STOP the WAR on WEED
A program that the supporters do not want the government to control.
That should pull in all the so-called libertarians and tea baggers. Don’t snear, the sanests need all of the help they can get.
Tax tokers, don’t jail junkies?
And I’m crushed you didn’t bend the rules for:
“Can’t we all just get a bong?”
