Are all Teabaggers racists? Of course not. Are some? Undoubtedly.
Now that the obvious is out of the way, there seems to be an awful lot of Teabaggers who have serious issues with race.
“The tea party is not just about politics and size of government. The data suggests it may also be about race,”said Christopher Parker, a UW assistant professor of political science who directed the survey.
It found that those who are racially resentful, who believe the U.S. government has done too much to support blacks, are 36 percent more likely to support the tea party than those who are not.
Indeed, strong support for the tea party movement results in a 45 percent decline in support for health care reform compared with those who oppose the tea party. “While it’s clear that the tea party in one sense is about limited government, it’s also clear from the data that people who want limited government don’t want certain services for certain kinds of people. Those services include health care,”Parker said.
Not surprising.
As noted previously, the Teabaggers want government services, as long as they benefit them. It’s not about the size of government — it’s about being pissed that “those people” are taking their money away from them.
Lee Atwater knew what he was talking about.

Obama’s Plan: White Slavery.
That says just about everything.
And they’re proud of it.
That’s true. The few I’ve met are more than happy to get in your face and tell you all about it.
They want to deny that they are on the federal dole… look at the Quittah, her state gets a huge intake of federal money in for tax dollars out… and yet she’s helping to lead this “revolution”.
When they dial “911″ and no one shows up over pot-holed roads, and the person who finally responds was the Valedictorian in their high school class who became an EMT because it paid actual dollars in direct charges for services to the caller can not spell and administers “Morphine” instead of “Saline” (hey both end in “ine”) will they realize they might have made a mistake.
The tea party movement, imo, is largely an outcome of neoliberal economic policies. Everyone has lost except corps and the rich, and the poor have lost the most. But relative to expectations, the white middle class is the big loser.
It really took a university study to figure this out? I suspect that the problem of racism driving the teabaggers is higher than the study shows, but I will agree that it is not true in all cases. I do believe that the way the corporate press pushes the capitalism is good, even when it is bolstered by corporate socialism, whereas help for the not well off is simply socialism – they’re taking your money.
The marginalizing of people who question the system, eg. bloated military budgets (toys and wars) or restricted health care (insurance companies only, not single payer) keep a full spectrum of discussion from occurring.
Our leader in discussions, obamarahma, does nothing significant to expand the conversation. In fact, he helps to set it as the standard. Just another indication of corporatism winning the day.
Slightly O/T, but a pretty good read…
So, the FEMA camps that Beck and other media wingnuts promised are really white slavery plantations. Where are those camps anyway?
In groups of over 200, less than 5% are needed to be the leaders and to control the direction of the group :(research indicates)

I’m surprised the mainstream media doesn’t pick up on this study and report it to a larger audience.
With the Republics cheering them on, the white middle class is more than happy to blame the non-whites even though the Republics have been in charge for most of the time of decline.
Probably they don’t because it doesn’t fit their narrative.
Alex Jones has a map
Um…because it would require that they actually do their job, for a change?
The Mean Girls of the Republican right are really bringing on their bitchy selves, now aren’t they. Liz, Michelle, Michele, Sarah all trying to outdo each other in their strident full-on shrillery.
A real class act. No-class.
Righto. My comments only addressed the source of their resentment. Yours brings in the issue of why they blame who they blame.
Hard to find a meaner bunch…
Some of the more media savvy tea partiers in the bay area are telling people to not have signs about Obama and his citizenship or comparing him to Hitler or other racist like comments. They are very aware that the press notice and are trying to get their followers to tone it down.
just now on my FB Page:
‘ there are more white teabaggers than black teabaggers because there are more white people than black people’
well there ya go
And I bet each one claims to be Christian. (But then …)
“I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.” — Mohandas Gandhi
In more ways than one. Including race to the bottom.
They are the goverment-run community health clinics. You can check in, but you can’t check out.
Heh. Didn’t know Gandhi said that. My son said: What does Christianity have to do with Christ anyhow?
Bingo.
Including the presidency.
They don’t mind paying for expensive and long-term incarceration of “those people” for drug violations.
New University of Washington Study: Cemeteries Filled With Dead People.
Somewhere I read that a significant number of these
so called Teabaggers are collecting unemployment while
protesting big government.I can’t help but wonder where
they stand on Medicare and Social Security
What does Christianity have to do with Christ anyhow?
They both go to the same megachurch?
wander off into tboggland sometime and utter the wrong word
People generally resent losing what they consider theirs but add race into the hopper, combine with voices telling you it is the fault of people who are different, then you get teh crap we have been observing over the last year. The fear and resentment are always there.
Interesting observation by eCAHN; duly noted and mostly agree. I would amend it by saying that it’s the white (fomerly?) middle class to whom most of the Fake Noise ilk have been pitching their tent show revival brainwashings at – as in GlennSeanRushBilloMicheleGreta etc.
They’ve done a good job at peddling the meme that the white middle class “works harder” than teh poorz and teh brown-skinned ones. Plus the whites are just more entitled, and not only that – via the entertainment media (as opposed to the so-called “news”) like dumb shows such as “Real Housewives of stupidity/vapidity/shallowville – but that whites should be living in giant mansions, buying and driving new model expensive cars, going on 5 or more expensive vacations per year, buying tons of new expensive clothes, sending their kids to expensive private (wouldn’t want them mingling with undesirbles and dirty folk, now would we?) schools from K onwards, etc etc.
Where did this entitlement and conspicuous consumption on steroids come from but from the corporate media and their prosperty “christianist” churches that preach that if you’re poor, it’s all YOUR fault bc you must be in league with the devil.
This country’s been sold down the river, and middle class whites went nuts, imo, spending like drunken sailors, living way beyond their means, but believing (and finding people to preach at them 24/7 about how they deserve it) that the money should flow forever but only to them… because they deserve it.
I’ve never understood how or why my siblings could live the way they do, especially if you look at our humble roots. Ironically, as the token leftie agnostic in the group, I live much closer (and still not all that close, but by comparison…) to our roots, which was “plain” German farming folk, who lived very very simply and frugally. My sisters and their kids, imo, are just nutty out of control in their excessive lifestyles and overspending.
But there they are on the front lines of the Tea Party with their racist signs and slurs, but hey, don’t ever call them racist.
It’s very sad. Many people have been brainwashed to drink the kool aid and refuse to look reality in the face.
Neoliberalism is horrid and huge, huge problem for our country, but that doesn’t take away from the vast great neocon rape and pillage that has taken place for the past couple of decades.
I’ll get off the soap box now, but I do agree that the white middle classes had their expectations artifically raised and encouraged, and now that it’s all falling apart, they are being manipulated once again to be pitted against the poor, rather than against the corporations and the uber wealthy, who are really THE problem.
Every once in awhile, I think I should attend a service at a megachurch, just for info purposes, like I attended Friday service at a mosque after 9/11. But then I think they are just like the TV preachers, aren’t they? And I can’t bear them. Really want to be able to micromanage the channels on my cable to get rid of all the religious ones.
You describe the process of turning citizens into consumers. Doing the same thing with schools wrt charter schools. Caught bits of panel on it on cspan a couple of weeks ago.
Admittedly, the UW (I have experience) is one of the most dogmatic, politically correct, groupthinking academic institutions on the planet, and the the figures who produced this study will have already have thought that the tea party people are as the study unsurprisingly concluded.
Diversity of thought and opinion is remarkably rare at the UW. It is on the social and political level kind of a “Daily Kos” of academia.
Really awful, noisy “music,” lots of arms waving around in the air, right-leaning “messages,” and (of course) constant importunate pleas designed specifically to separate flock members from their assets, preferably the liquid variety.
For starters: How do these operations keep their tax-exempt statuses when they’re so clearly profit-motivated, and very often take strong political positions? Same as for the telegansters. Sorry, doesn’t pass the smell test for me…
Money Quote!!
I got mine and fuck you too!!!
has something to do with that darn pesky constitutional amendment, IMHO
The only reason for TV preachers is collection of funds.
There is a lobby that’s fighting the special treatment of “religious” orgs, not only the questionable tax benefits, but other matters like their treatment of children that would be illegal for nonreligious parents to do. Unfortunately the org is small and unlikely to have much influence anytime soon, but at least it exists.
That’s an easy one. They want the government to keep their grubby hands off their Social Security and Medicare! That’s where the term “low information voters” comes from!
Glad there’s such a lobby, but the name is a very loaded (and thus offputting) word. They could, I think, reach a larger constituency with a different name. Same content, different packaging. Just a thought.
Many of these people are living on the edge and see the bottom coming up. If not on themselves certainly their children. I am not sure I understand it but it seems always those below in income and advantages that are the recipients of their resentment and hatred. In the south much of the inherent racism is based on chronic poverty and variably sized groups of l poor and near poor..
I can tell you it is heavier here in Georgia than I have ever known it, in particular the middle and upper middle class.
Where is the resentment of the upper one percenters?
I wonder how many Teabaggers are also climate deniers? It is really the same issue. You cannot aspire to live large if the planet is to be saved. You cannot aspire to live large if minorities are taking your share. Somebody needs to wop these folks upside the head (metaphorically) and let them know that their carbon footprints will also effect their children’s future. Scaling down everything is key. This might be the hidden rainbow in the recession/depression cloud. That and reforming the two neo-party system.
I agree that social security is stoopid and should never have been given to anyone. It IS ridiculous that these people want to hold onto their social security and medicaid, and I’ll be happy when it is taken away from them. That said, I do not say this because I am “ageist”.
Quite. It would make for an interesting study, if one had enough time to do it. My personal experience has been that the baby boomers I know who are middle class Republics most came up from more humble beginnings but really bought the notion big time that they should be able to lead the “good life” on steriods. But there’s this notion promoted via their churches and their politics that there’s “not enough” to go around, and only they should have the preponderance of the spoils.
That’s simplifying it but part of the divide and conquer mentality.
My more or less leftie/Dem pals tend to live more frugally and consciously. We talk to one another about limiting our consumption and avoiding the brainwashing that we’re all exposed to. For the most part, this group (including me) are not indoctrinated in a religious faith/church, although some are deeply spiritual and may have certain “practices” that they do.
In other words, I see an insidious connection between some of these “christianist” fundie (often mega churches) and conspicuous consumption, plus the entitlement mentality leading directly to racism and other “ism” that pit citizens against one another… rather than focusing on the real “boogemen,” which are the corporations and the uberwealthy.
Of course, the right has also been very good at getting their masses believing that they, too, may sometime be super, super wealthy, and so they wouldn’t want to have to pay all those horrid terrible taxes, so why should their wealthy betters have to be traumatized by, you know, paying their fair share???
And so on it goes…
Tea Party of the 1930′s.
Perhaps I shouldn’t be so glib given how deadly serious that lot were, and how laughably pathetic the current incarnation of prescription drug and Fox-addled bigots are. There is some good in that since today’s lot are utterly incapable of ever getting off their huge backsides and doing anything silly. At least not on the scale of their predecessors.
The resentment for the one percenters isn’t there bc all of these Tea Party types have been carefully taught to believe that they, too, may one day grab the gold ring and join the one percenters… and so, for sure, they would NOT want to pay any taxes in that case… so why should their “betters” have to pay now??? Seriously, it goes something like that.
koo-koo
In north Georgia many are climate change deniers based on their religious belief. and also belief that it is a UN Communist plot to take over their land. However the libertarian segment welcomes it, may or may not think it is man made. But they see it as away to make lots of money through exploitation of natural resources and more open ship routes in the north.
Of course not. Your words would appear to have been written more likely by a greedy selfish ignoramus.with terror of age and disability.
[modnote - please don't make it personal]
I’m shocked, shocked to hear there is racism among those God-fearing Tea Party folks!!! So, what else is new? I would love data on their average age, educational level, income and, if possible, their IQs(Ignorance Quotient).
I remember those kinds of peeps in Knoxville. I lived three for a year.
Teabaggers racist? Well knock me over with a feather……..
I can’t stand the evil one-percenters… business owners and executives, bankers, actors, artists, sports athletes, models, politicians, etc etc. Vile and disgusting liars and cheaters… all of them!
MAKE THEM PAY!
Yep. Brainwashing that everyone can be a millionaire and therefore don’t ask for taxes on your future fortune (that you will surely make). And there are more than enough suckers buy this.
Buried by Faux Noise.
Of course the SeanGlennBilloMicheleRush meme right now is to indoctrinate the Tea Party crowd to say that if someone calls a Tea Partier racist, what that REALLY means is that person is a racist, not the Tea Partier.
In other words, whoever wrote this study that highlights – via actual photos, YouTube videos, articles, tv shows, etc – the blatant racism of some (not all) Tea Partiers… the person who WROTE the article is the racist, NOT the Tea Partiers carrying the racist signs, etc.
Get it?
If you don’t, join the crowd. But that’s the new meme. Dodge responsibility for your words and actions, or, IOKIYAR.
It is so much worse and crazier now than just a few years back. That said the resentment targeting African Americans has simmered since the Civil War, tending to be less prominent as standard of living increases and more with the opposite. It never goes away.
I’m just agreeing with what I’ve read here – no need to make fun of us here on FDL! Are you trying to say the TPers aren’t racist?! Ha – sucks to be as stoopid as you!
[modnote - please don't make it personal]
So many buy that “story.” But I’ve witnessed it time and again: oh, but WHEN I make my GIANT fortune, I do NOT want to be burdened by unseemly and unfair taxes… so: hip hip hooray for the obscenely wealthy never paying taxes ever under any circumstances. Some day MY ship will come in, and THEN: I’ll get MINE, and EFF the rest of you!!
Go figure. Sadly (and with apologies to those of faith who not believe or act this way, and I do know many are out there) nearly all of these people are also good “christianists” attempting to legislate my private sex life, but in no way wish to follow the teachings of this carpenter called Jesus.
Why do those people think that the Black community has so much power? Maybe not power but something they want or don’t like that doesn’t exist.
The really odd and scary thing is that this attitude being so widespread is completely unique to the US. I know of no other developed country where people are fooled by this. US political and social development is on a trajectory no other country on Earth is following. The reasons why not are pretty obvious. To non-Americans at least.
It is American exceptionalism. We are exceptionally stoopid. (and cynical)
Yeah, America sucks.
OooooH That’s a hard one. There is some stuff in it, especially in regards to white men and anatomy. There is also the pure tribal racist control of the seed in some. But I think mostly it is because they believe the white liberals/government favors African Americans over the poor white interests. This in the marginal middle class. In working with the really poor I never saw as much. But that was some time ago.
I hate to leave this but I have to run spend my social security largess on food for dinner.
Hey TS
There is an incredible war of anger occuring, can’t describe it in terms of wage or class or ideology, more in lines of labels.
Years ago when you asked people here in the US what they were, first thing you heard was ‘Americans’. It united us. Not any more, people now associate with a smaller group first. That’s bloody dangerous.
When I spent time in Europe and spoke to folks that came thru both of the Wars, The Big One and WWII, they contrasted Europeans vs Americans.
They had one statement first and foremost. I was told that when asked, Americans would first Identify as Americans, then the nationality whereas Europeans always answered first with their Nationality then their country of origin.
Are we seeing something like that setting up here in the US?
I think so and it could be very dangerous.
I have made the same observation. I think it has to do with a large primitive open continent combined with the early history of slave holding.
ha ha sounds like a teabagger… “don’t touch my social security or medicaid! (cause I’m a greedy SOB racist)”
In fact someone in Georgia wanted to force the Census to accept race “White Southern American” as ethnic origin
They’re Racists? NO!!!
Here is the sad truth that EVERYBODY is ignoring….
We are standing on the edge of an economic cataclysm and there is only one way out. It will involve taxes – a decade or more of serious taxation. The politicians won’t tell you that but that is the way it is, folks. Unlike the last forty years, however, there is no reason why the poor and middle class should have to bear the burden of getting us out of the the hole that the uber rich dug us into.
Once upon a time there existed a class of people who were SO FILTHY RICH that they lived in a ninety percent tax bracket. In other words, they kept ten percent of their income, handing over the rest to the federal government. It wasn’t as much of a sacrifice as you might think. They still had more money than they knew what to do with – they only had ninety percent less of it. That situation has not existed in this country for a long time. But it will exist again – count on it. I’ll be very blunt with you: Our very economic survival depends on us “soaking the rich” if you will. The last thirty years was their party and you and I were not invited. It’s time for them to pay the piper – not us. This is not class warfare, nor is it revolutionary thinking on my part. That is what is known as good old fashioned common sense.
Knowing all this as I do, it is a laugh riot for me watching these Tea Party jackasses at any given event. They have been brainwashed by the plutocracy into doing their bidding and they’re doing it quite handily. And remember, contrary to what their leaders would have you believe, this was not a “grass roots” movement. It was created, promoted and, in some cases, financed by Rupert Murdich’s FOX Noise. Watching them protest the “evil Liberals” and knowing that the median income of these idiots is probably around thirty-five-thousand per year – if that – is enough to send me into gales of uncontrollable laughter. I’d really miss them if they were gone. Honestly I would.

Tea baggers are racists? No shit Sherlock.
and while us Progs and Libers are laughing and directing rage at them, they in turn are directing rage towards the elected officials, not us. They are working according to script, to a plan. We’ll find out in November if they succeed, while we sit and laugh.
Don’t touch the safety net designed to fulfill the imperatives of science, the Constitution, most of the major religions and the liberal atheists to provide for the general welfare.
.
Any teabagger who thinks that the government is doing so much for blacks and other minority groups shld take a ride into the inner city and see how the streets have been paved with gold. There they will see the mythological welfare queen with her three cadillacs and a pocket full of guvment money. Or perhaps they shld take a field trip onto an Indian reservation where they cld see how well off the people are living off of their guvment checks. The guvment stopped working for minorities and poor whites a long time ago, it is now middle class whites turn to feel the brunt of a dysfunctional government beholden to corporate special interests. Too often millions of middle class whites were able to miss the devastation of economic policies that prized cheap labor over stable neighborhoods and this was ok with them as long as it was some other guy who was losing his house. The chickens have come home to roost and the only thing some of these people know to do is rant about the guvment and rage about minorities taking their jobs. You wld think some of them wld realize that minorities have been devastated worse than they have, but this wld be logic and logic does not mix well with racist anti government rage.
Worth repeating.
