The story of how I became a national figure in the media is widely known, but few people know what I actually did for the CIA.
I was a covert operations officer specializing in nuclear counter proliferation — essentially, making sure the bad guys didn’t get the bomb. . . .
I resigned from the CIA in 2006 because it was no longer possible to do the covert work for which I was highly trained and which I loved. . . . But I did not lose my belief that the danger of nuclear terrorism was the most urgent threat we face. Nor did I lose my passion for working, albeit in a new way, to address that threat. I am working on this issue now as part of the international Global Zero movement, in which political, military and faith leaders, experts and activists strive for the worldwide elimination of all nuclear weapons.
As Wilson explains, the recent arms reduction initiative between the U.S. and Russia (which David Dayen has been covering here in recent days) is an important step toward preventing nuclear terror: “The only way to eliminate the danger that nuclear weapons will be used by countries in conflict, by accident or by terrorists is to lock down all nuclear materials and eliminate all nuclear weapons in all countries.”
In addition to her work with the Global Zero movement and for a nonprofit think tank in New Mexico, Wilson appears in “Countdown to Zero,” a film that will be released in theaters in July after premiering (to positive reviews) in January at the Sundance Film Festival.
Somewhere, Dick Cheney, Scooter Libby, and Karl Rove are probably gnashing their teeth that Valerie Wilson is continuing to work against their dream of a more militarized and antagonistic world.

About Firedoglake
good evening, swopa.
Only if they’re feeling especially passive today. It wouldn’t surprise me if they are plotting something more nefarious when it comes to Mr and Mrs. Wilson.
Hey Margaret.
They saw fit to chase Henry Cisneros for how many years, for what turned out to be… nothing?
You are right.
Evening Ya’ll!
Those bastards prefer conflict, more money to be made.
“y’all”
Very interesting to know that the president may not be the ultimate controller of natioanal security mechanisms like CIA and the long list of operations that they create. That the past administration may have some of the levers of power. So influential people could be targets as ORhama dos not believe in oversite or accountability. Nothing has changed with this election but more power ttransfer to the MIC.
Jabba’s nefarious stunt in revealing Valerie Plame’s identity was an act of treason. Jabba’s Libby insulation was weak, but apparently strong enough to keep Dick’s head out of the “meat grinder”.
That said, for the record, here at FDL, Valerie Plame Wilson revealed herself to be disappointingly hawkish.
She is not a hero of mine. Others who were here were similarly nonplussed by Ms. Plame’s bombastic warmongering.
Is that King George’s picture starrring from the bottom right corner of the page?
That was very well layed out from my view and was not clear during the outrage of outing.
It a Friday night and you all aren’t down at the local watering hole? I would only need to drive 70 miles to closest one to here!
Glad to see Valerie doing positive work again.
I’ll give credit where credit is due…
Somewhere, Dick Cheney, Scooter Libby, and Karl Rove are probably gnashing their teeth that Valerie Wilson is continuing to work against their dream of a more militarized and antagonistic world.
Can you imagine if someone from the other party had outed a national security asset? Or worse yet, if a relative nobody had done the same thing? They’d be in a deep hole somewhere…
In the meantime, Dick and Karl are free to run their mouths at will…and collect big fees for it, to boot. I suggest they take those speaking engagements to Europe, preferably Spain.
Straight to The Hague… Do not pass ‘Go’ do not collect $200…! ;-)
Not I. I can’t afford my flamboyant lifestyle anymore.
I’m still can’t believe that Cheney isn’t behind bars over what he did to the Wilsons. One can only hope that in the fullness of time, the bluebird of justice will relieve himself on Cheney’s bright and shiny dome.
Also recall that ChimpCo tried to suggest that:
Wilson was ‘junketeering, Plame was not a very good agent, that she was not covert in the first place, that if an outing actually happened that it was inadvertent, and that Wilson’s report back to CIA was flawed, inaccurate, and redundant and Leftist-influenced.
And they spun these stories not one after another, but all at once.
I couldn’t drink anything right now due to antibiotics that I am taking but tonight was the last night for those.
good lord, if there is one, Isn’t Pres Obama only continuing an expiring SALT treaty? And Isn’t 1500 enough to kill us all?
Oh, I don’t know that this requires sanctimony and seriousness. Most countries don’t have nuclear weapons, and those who do seem reluctant to join the rest of the world, particular, the U.S.
The fact of the matter is, nothing would happen to the U.S, if the country decided to disarm unilaterally tomorrow. The only impact that would be felt would be an economic one. Being free of nuclear weapons is worth that particular cost, however. Why not be the first to disarm and let the chips fall where they may?
The fact of the matter is, there are no signs whatsoever that the cold war ever ended in the upper echelons of the country’s power elite. As we speak, the U.S. is still busy picking fights around the periphery of the Russia federation. Trying to get footholds in one part of Asia and another, they just don’t seem to want to quit. The U.S. has not yet figured out that’s it’s floating in the water face down. That’s because the the country is under the control of raving lunatics who happen to be very rich from all these decades of war profiteering, hot and cold.
I actually had a glass of wine tonight. Can’t believe what a wimpy drinker I’ve become in my old age.
Her views about Iran obtaining the technology is very mainstream in some circles. I’ve heard the identical scenario, containers, the number coming into the US everyday, a few other times.
OOps, I guess that wasn’t the point of the post. Outing Valerie Plame should be prosecuted, but I guess we can only look forward to our demise
That remark is pure silliness. Israel comes to mind immediately. We don’t even acknowledge Israel’s Nukes. We have not acknowledged them for fifty years.
Furthermore, any country that does not have a nuclear defense would be wise to get with the program. The only countries that the US has attacked are defenseless nations like Grenada, Chile, Nicaragua, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Viet Nam.
Paraphrasing Chomsky: It stands to reason that nukes are a deterrent to American Hegemony.
This is my watering hole, cant afford a cab.
Have you stayed abreast of the iter fusion project in france?
4 times more than is necessary to create a nuclear winter for the next 2oo+ years…! 8-(
Moving from x thousands of warheads to y thousands of warheads, as long as it less total warheads is a good thing.
But, HELLO it’s still 1000′s of warheads! This is all how many warheads can dance on a pin.
I declare this a shiny object. Plame or no.
Supposedly, that’s why Bibi won’t be one of the 40+ nation leaders attending the NPT discussions in DC next week…!
As long as you enjoyed it that is what counts! ;>
We are intent to continue to give Israel carte blanche to do wahtever it wants – to ignore its nuclear arsenal as we meet with other nations to talk about theirs. Its farcical.
I haven’t read anything about that recently. Is there news?
Truly. It’s all relative. Four times enough to kill us all is arguably better than ten times enough to kill us all but that will be academic when we’re all f***ing dead.
Construction has been started. They have a fairly cool video on their website – short but informative.
I didn’t know that they were planning on running the core at 200 million degrees!
Hope they have a bunch of sun screen
I suggest you play the video. You might find a line in there that slightly surprises you (just after the 1 minute mark, IIRC).
Actually it was fusion research which convinced me that Greenpeace had stopped being an organization worthy of support and had become just another organization that exists for the sake of fund raising. They have roundly denounced research into fusion reactors, I think largely because of the word “nuclear”.
maybe we could exhume Novak ~~~EDITED IN MODERATION~~~ to find out what he knew and when
~~~ModNote: Yes, the man is dead. But come on…~~~
Yeah I knew the deals had all been signed and the design details worked out and ground broken. It’s just going to be another torus reactor though, isn’t it? Nothing new except the scale, isn’t that correct?
yep, but the scale. Oh my goodness
Well, yeah because the hotter, the better if they want a self sustaining reaction. That’s the holy grail of course.
Oh, I know. Enormous.
and that is very disappointing. A friend was working with them, was killed in Australia the same day their ship had the explosion. Fucking French
I do like the fact that ObamaRahma has recently denied Dimona Reactor Scientists visas to attend US universities…! ;-)
I understand they are doing something new on injecting the fuel though I can’t remember having read any details about it.
Yep, the Rainbow Warrior pretty much confirmed to me everything bad I had thought about the French government.
Hey Margret that could be another Diary to write… you might even getter better comments than the last one…
I know I for one am interested.. Sci Fi American my favorite monthly.
There was a report today (sorry no link), US is making it difficult for them to purchase components (Dimona)
I’m just saying; underwear, UNDERWEAR, where some idiot straps a bomb to his crotch, FAILS, miserably, and people are arguing about nuke delivery from some rogue?
The nation/state balance of power must certainly be addressed. But I see nothing that supercedes McNamara’s MAD policy being addressed. There is no nation/state policy or progress or ABILITY that’s going to change things. Otherwise, the argument would be about China. Think about that.
Real security issues are about peace. Peace. Unilateral withdrawal and immediately from both Irak and Afghanistan would do more to bolster the peace than anything else.
And *poof* nobody talks about the Saudis at all since 2008. Why? They’re still beheading people, and oil is going up and going to be $4 gas again this summer.
Nukes are not the problem. Real geopolitik is.
Heck Yes, Margaret – a diary on fusion !
And you’re right, it’s a crying shame because I am so against slaughtering sentient creatures such as cetaceans but Greenpeace has gotten too reactionary and narrow minded. Like I said, I believe they have become primarily a fund raising organization which sucks because their work isn’t finished.
My hand is up, can you see it Kelly ?
i agree
oh my, sorry moderators, I really dont mean to be a “?” I do just want to fit in here and will try to check my dark sense at the door
You know, after my first diary, I’ve decided to keep writing them, maybe make it a regular thing. Fusion would be a great one to do. Thanks for the suggestion.
And the too big to fail “defense” industry.
Not a problem. Carry on.
wouldn’t be difficult to excite me to violence when it comes to the whalers …
Enjoyed seeing the harassment that was occurring against the Japanese whalers earlier this year (last year?)
sorry, I’m way off thread topic now
Put ‘em both up, pilgrim!
Late Night goes wherever it goes. Off-topic, unless otherwise stated, IS the topic.
great idea!
RBG runs a tight ship…! ;-)
Harassment? I’d prefer torpedoes…. >:-[
oh shoot, they’re both up now, how do I hold my trousers up now
And I would like to express my gratitude for the overwhelming response I got. It surprised me and very much gratified me. I hope I’m worthy of such praise and I would like you all to thank Kelly for talking me into it. :-)
son of gun, me too, just that little clause in the constitution saying we can’t commit acts of war against other nations (think that’s what it says)
Well if you don’t have the PowerBloggerCheetoBeltHolderUpper I can’t help you.
Looking forward to it Margret.
They call them “suspenders” and they are quite chic again. ;-)
LMAO! Like that ever stopped us before….
Hey Kelly
THanks for encouragin Margaret !
So what day do you think I should pick? Unfortunately my days are mostly free.
Smooch!
And don’t lock Peg into certain/special topics for diaries. She has a rich life tapestry, and many, many talents, observations, and experiences.
Y’all (note proper usage!) will love her for her depth as well as breadth.
I’ve never figured out one thing though, and that is if she has a Texas drawl when she speaks Japanese….
Today was a very good day.
15 year old son’s baseball team won their first game of the season in extra innings.
yea
Got to turn in, going to find my suspenders (they’re very cute, wide and red – Paul Bunyan type) so next time Kelly asks for Both hands, I’ll be ready.
c ya
Good question… What day would there be the most readers at the Lake…wonder what the site meter says..
Actually I’m going to do the one on Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell too. I’ve been expanding it somewhat. I guess I need to set up a flickr account to post pictures with it?
since comment #57, heard our Marcy Wheeler on Mike Malloy’s radio show last nite (sub-hosted by Brad, uhhm Bradblog)
Yes. Just. Do. It.
While nuclear disarmament and the comprehension that not only judeo- christian nations should be allowed to maintain a nuclear defense are not mutually exclusive, to say that Iran must be stopped creates a mixed message.
Ooh! Cool tool. It says Wednesday is the busiest. I might stick with Thursday though since that’s a fairly high traffic day also.
oh I am really embarrassed, don’t want to get censored so early in my, I hope, tenure here at the lake
Is that about the flickr Kelly? Really I don’t know but I know I couldn’t get a picture to post with my first diary. I know you know how to post them. Please help!
Yo – you can be flip with the tongue, if you stay high minded.
No violence, ever. But clever is ever, if you get my drift.
Bienvenu
E-me. I’ll set you up and show you the embed pic thingy.
Don’t worry. You will weather it just fine. We all do.
Peg, I just realized, I’ve known you on-line for FOUR FRIKKING YEARS now! Sheez! That’s what, 4 Billion in Blog years?
Very well put.
spasiba.
Okey doke. Getting kinda late tonight. Ashita ka?
LMAO! Yep! Lotsa blog years. Has it been that long?
Don’t we all…? ;-)
Weeee! Hi Lurk!
*note to all: send chocolates to the Mods.*
Upsetting the moderators is something we all do from time to time. At least this blog has a cogent and consistent policy, unlike the vast majority of them. It’s a better place for them too. (note the careful butt kissing…)
Yep. Remember it was when Ms. Lyons was getting continually banned at A-blog at the 2006 elections.
Prescience!
thanks Kelly, Margaret, Mary and C.T. I guess I have a darkside that needs to be tamed although I am almost a pacifist,. whatyacalled passive-aggresive
Wow! I guess it has been that long. I’m constantly flabbergasted that it’s 2010 though.
I don’t think it’s a mixed message at all. Non-proliferation means no more nuclear nations; it’s not complicated.
And note that she doesn’t say Iran has to be stopped because Iran is evil; she says Iran has to be stopped because it would trigger a nuclear arms race with the surrounding countries (e.g., Saudi Arabia).
eww sorry not into butt-kissing. If I was, I’d still be married and have a job. :(
We are as sweet as…
Oh, chocolate! Break-time!
(note the careful butt kissing…)
A man’s got’s ta do, what a man’s gotta do…! ;-)
Hasn’t that arms race already started?
I’m going to go to bed I think. I’ll shoot you an email monyana flat. Thanks for the help with the pictures. Illustrations are so important to give it the finished look. Plus the chart I tried to embed didn’t work. ARGH! Good night all you pups or as the Nihonjin would say, Oyasumi Nasai Koinu! :-)
LMAO! Now that’s funny!
Dark chocolate covered pecans even, Lurk…! *g*
Hey, trying to eat here…
or pralines.
Many here are frustrated with the lack of fairness, much less progressive policy in our governance.
So, I wouldn’t call that frustration “darkside.” Activism is a great outlet for such frustrated energies, and you’ll find that here.
And I’ll say, it’s a real community. People share themselves here. It’s real.
Thinking of the scene in “Fight Club” where Tyler asks whatshisname Ah
“yeah that’s clever, how’s that workin out for you?” (for me, not well)
Careful Lurk. Chocolate on the keyboards can get messy…
Heh at all the above!
Night Peg! Catch you on the e-side!
Night.
Hence the sneeze-guard I appropriated from a dumpster when the local Sizzler closed.
yes Kelly that’s why I’ve reading FDL for a year. I haven’t commented, because I haven’t felt worthy. Also wish I would’ve stated earlier to catch the Bush snark.
Well, there is the Tyler Durden blog…
Kelly isnt colorado considering legitimizing mary jane?
Glad you are commenting now!
Yep – actually there are med dispensaries up and running. The most hilarious one is next to the damn Capitol! LOL!
Say, I would like to legitimize some Mary Jane right now.
because I haven’t felt worthy.
Who is truly worthy…? ;-)
I suppose it has, but I’m probably not the only person who doesn’t grasp the logic of “since the arms race has started, let’s allow everyone in the region to get nukes and THEN start non-proliferation efforts.” :-)
You are.
*bows towards Hawaii*
Do ya need some, Senator…? ;-)
Scene that Tylyer durden blog, dont go much cause after Fdl there’s not much time left
You’re the Senator from FDL – Get On It!
Passing it over to Mary.. enjoy from up north a way..
Just a quick on topic comment. Any agreement that reduces nuclear stockpiles is to the good. As for Obama’s change in nuclear strategy, it is pro forma. On the substance, it is the same as it has always been. The only two states currently considered potential nuclear targets, Iran and North Korea, were carefully exempted. This is just so typically Obama. Change the wording, not the reality.
As Senator from FDL I hear by decree that it is legal to carry a neutron bomb into Starbucks or any bar.
No, sorry to imply something. I think the race has started since we started it. I am very worried that some ^&^@#@$ will develop and threaten/use that abomination
LOL! – Just saw that. I thought the sneeze guard was standard on the MOD 3000 Kevlar Chair.
Exactly, Hugh…! 8-(
Major fail on living up to Alfred Nobel’s noble intentions…! 8-(
or maybe we are talking past each other and I’m not getting it , as usual
All we need is for Sista Palin to become president and she would rapture us all, good and evil, up to Jeebus but in bite sized, crispy pieces.
A wee bit overkill…? ;-)
that is my problem, bi-polar
Sorry, but you just fed me the line –
Here, have some Jesus Bites.
Mine is the original prototype. So no goodies, like the beverage holder or the ray-gun.
Happens to the most creative, smartest people I know.
Do they serve that at communion?
Late, late night!
My 16 yro son is Bipolar I…! What’s new…? *g*
Damn!
kinda like I said earlier, a continuation of START. Thanks Hugh for being a cynic to my idiotic idealism
Goodbye, dear thread! Moving upstairs
But think how much it will be worth some day?
I have never figured out that…”g” is that snark or..please explain.
F$%^ that.!
Me either and I have been around here forevah! I think it is a hug or somethin.
*g* means grin!
Now get yer asses up on the new thread.
Mary, aren’t you the one that had a wiener/jack russell? I only vaguely remember because I was really messed up (cute doggie!)
That was me!
YES, Ma’am!!
Oh do YOU have a surprise waiting for you…hehe!
hahahaha!!
