The interwebs are buzzing today with the news that GOP Gov. Robert McDonnell of Virginia has declared April “Treason in Defense of Slavery” month.
But what’s not getting enough attention is the fact that the group that convinced McDonnell to sign the declaration are a bunch of neo-Confederates.
This year’s proclamation was requested by the Sons of Confederate Veterans. A representative of the group said it has known since it interviewed McDonnell when he was running for attorney general in 2005 that he was likely to respond differently than Warner or Kaine.
“We’ve known for quite some time we had a good opportunity should he ascend the governorship,” said Brandon Dorsey of the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
The Southern Poverty Law Center has a dossier on the SCV.
Although the 31,400-member SCV has always billed itself as a “non-political” and “non-racial” heritage organization devoted merely to preserving the legacy of Confederate soldiers, SCV leaders have long been tied to segregation and white supremacy.
See more on the group here.
But you’ve got to see this quote from an article in the May/June, 2008 edition of the SCV’s newsletter, The Southern Mercury.
It is very clear to me that if Barack Obama should be elected President, he would be extremely anti-white and would demand reparations for slavery and press hard for affirmative action to the degree that it would hurt young whites who were seeking jobs or admission to College and Graduate Schools. Even if he were elected, I would think he would be a one term President and the Congressional Republicans with a “corporal’s guard’ of Democrats would stop most of the radical and unjust laws he would propose. However, I believe that his rhetoric and anti-white legislative proposals would stir up racial riots. If he were running for re-election, these riots would turn into an extremely violent nature that would seriously damage race relations in America, and leave entire sections of some of our cities in ruins.
Real nice people you’re keeping company with, Bob.

They just won’t crawl under a rock and stay there, will they?
Since my great grandfather fought in the confederate army, was awarded the Southern Cross of Honor, and spent 18 months in a Yankee prison camp and my grandmother and mother were both members of the UDC, I assume I would be eligible for membership in the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
But lobbying for proclamations like this are a lot of the reasons why I’ve never bothered to apply. That and the trying to re-write/turn a blind eye to history that they seem to espouse.
Now that Texass took care of that “Jefferson” problem for Virginia they have more leeway for this kind of thing.
My great-great grandfather was a captain in the South Carolina cavalry. The only way I’d join these assholes is as an informant.
Uh, where’s the news? /s
Heehee. Your Nagi hat might give you away. Why do I think those creeps are not pet lovers?
Wingnut whistling by Governor Bob:
WHEREAS, it is important for all Virginians to reflect upon our Commonwealth’s shared history, to understand the sacrifices of the Confederate leaders, soldiers and citizens during the period of the Civil War, and to recognize how our history has led to our present; and…
WHEREAS, this defining chapter in Virginia’s history should not be forgotten, but instead should be studied, understood and remembered by all Virginians, both in the context of the time in which it took place, but also in the context of the time in which we live….

You can trust they won’t read ANYTHING into this eh?
I hope nobody is surprised when we find out that McDonnell himself is tied to white supremacists.
My personal favorite is the “Black Confederates” myth — one that was shot down rather hard back in 1915, when there still actual Confederate veterans around that could do so.
The synopsis: The CSA wouldn’t allow black soldiers to actually take up arms. Serve as cooks and menial workers, yes. Armed troops, no. Robert E. Lee begged and pleaded for the Confederate Congress to authorize the use of black troops, as he was in desperate need of soldiers, but was repeatedly rebuffed:
In late March of 1865, the CSA finally gave in and authorized the full-scale arming of black troops, but by then it was too late; Appomattox was but days away, and it would be all over then.
I’ll exchange Nagi for this one. I’ll fit right in. It’ll be here Friday. Gettin’ old and gotta start wearin’ a hat out in the sun. Damn.
Well hey Gov. McDonnell: How’s that sheet workin’ out for ya? Eyeholes fit alright, do they? Damn hard to run a good cross-burnin’, what with the price of gas these days…
Asshole.
Very Southern Gentlemanly. Everyone else will be wearing plain ol’ white hoods.
Yeah, well, my daddy wanted me to grow up to be a southern gentleman. I couldn’t pass the bigotry test, though. Biggest argument we ever had was over his use of the n word. When I was in the service I said I was bringing a girl home with me on leave. His only question: “Is she white?”
Here you go.
(There’s this, too, showing that the Pat Robertson influence goes beyond Neo-Confederacy.)
Back to work.
Namaste
Not only is idea of “Black Confederates” a myth but if I remember correctly a lot of men and material were restricted from the battlefields due to the requirements of guarding plantations and maintaining control of slaves.
http://www.fuckthesouth.com
damn right. I feel like this everyday now.
Germany doesn’t have government sponsored worship of Nazis. Why does a similar thing happen in VA?
Actually, do you remember this?
You cannot be a Southern Republic without being a Confereracy Worshiper.
Wow. That’s intense.
One branch of my family is from the south, Arkansas. A grandfather was in the KKK. My dad grew up to be a jazz musician.
I do remember now. Still, Germany seems to lack a desire to return to those days while Republics seem to dream of a return to the days of the Confederacy.
George Allen’s boots haunt the Governer’s mansion. Macaca lives. Lord Farquad rules Virginia.
Regional bigotry is still bigotry. Why are southerners always held personally responsible for our wingnuts? I never hear anybody suggesting we jettison Minnesota because of Bachmann or Ohio because of Jean Schmidt. Nobody suggests we give Massachusetts back to England because of Mittens. That’s a hell of a double standard. Yes, the south has problems but there are a great many of us working hard every day to change those attitudes and websites like fuckthesouth aren’t helping those efforts.
I remember it.
I have felt that way since the seventies when Nixon’s Southern Strategy gave the South veto power over the Presidential candidates for both parties.
Great point, im glad i just moved out of Virginia. Im now in the Maryland side.
I don’t mean everyone who lives in that region.
If the website was http://www.fuckrealamerica.com I would have typed that in. But that’s really who it’s meant for.
The Palin-ite racist, the northeast isn’t “real” types.
considering he spent the last 4 years concern trolling everything, why isn’t the last VA Gov publicly condemning this sh* ?!?!?
My dad was a jazz musician. DeeCee wasn’t segregated but I don’t recall any AAs playin’ with my dad or vice versa. My stepmom’s BIL was a member of the KKK. Went with him once to a Klan meeting in Myrtle Beach when we on vacation. Growin’ up I had lots of fun fuckin’ with the bigots. My mom got custody of me so until I was 9 I lived in DeeCee, went to integrated schools, etc. My stepmom was worse than my dad. She came from the hills in southwestern VA.
I understand but you have to understand that it’s hard to change attitudes in people who might be persuaded when they perceive people from other parts of the country badmouthing the entire region, not just the teabaggers and wingnuts therein.
I believe that it might be a bit of a stretch to make that connection. We after all honor the resting place of members of Tiger Force and many others without condoning their actions.
But…SS stormtroopers?
Wow, a racist jazz musician. That’s rich. I had no idea there was such a thing. In that respect, I’m lucky to grow up outside of the South.
Are you familiar with our history in warfare? If you have any questions we have at least two reminders in the current news.
He was a pianist. His favourite pianist? Errol Garner. Don’t ask me. I’ve never figured it out. He died at 55 and had changed quite a bit. Wish I could have had more time with him.
We’re the fucking Arrogant Northeast Liberal Elite?
Sorry, hon, I live on the west coast. And, in a glorified trailer. Still, I’m considering changing my middle name which is Lee, for you know who.
Nice to be reminded of how ignorant and mean spirited and souless so many people are.
Tears, here.
It happens quite frequently. My grandfather was a quite bigoted railroader. His favorite club? The Porters and Waiters Club
Amazing. How did he justify that? Was he conscious of the irony?
Oh? One of them rebels, huh? *g*
Did you know that jazz came out of gospel and blues and some stuff out of Ireland? The musicians know.
me too !
Let’s jettison Bachman and the horses she rode in on.
I’m with you, babe.
He and my Grandmother loved to dance and the music was the best around. Like most people, they had the “ability” (/s) to differentiate those they knew as ok people from the “Other”.
OMG! Two of a kind. Maybe it inspired us to fight the “system”.
Did you watch Ken Burns’ doc? Of course, you did. You can hear that music in your head now, can’t you?
I thought you were back to work. ??
When my daughter moved to DC, after being raised in LA, she was shocked at how the class system worked there. She told me Mom, all the black people wear uniforms in stores and all the white people wear suits. Prolly a little exageration, but that’s what she said.
you’re killing me ! just finished listening to Billy Holiday’s Without Your Love – off of the PBS soundtrack
then again, while living in California, our then 9 year old asked us why the police only pull brown people over :D
I am at work. I’m wrapping quarters from the washers/dryers at some of our units.
Killing you, softly.

Telling my whole life with his words.
He had a style.
Don’t you just love the children who notice?
Hunny bunny. Making the best use of his best, is he?
(SD!)
Emptywheel has a fresh cross-post already in progress: Is DOD “Losing” Videos of Its Special Ops Missions?
yes. Tim and I just about cried when he said it :D
Okay, nappy tappy for me.
GottaGet to go to work at three. *g*The states entered into a union, (i.e., the “United States”) VOLUNTARILY, upon the condition that they were also free to withdraw from the “union” when they chose to do so. Fearing increasing federal power, most southern states decided it would be in their best interest to withdraw from the union, as was their right. Lincoln violated the agreement with the states by his war against the south, which had nothing to do with slavery, the KKK, or any of that other Southern Poverty Law Center b.s. or politically correct revisionists history. Lincoln’s war against the south was simply to increase the power of the federal government by preserving the union. The south may have lost the war, but they were not wrong. The massive corrupt, dictatorial federal government we have today is proof that southerners were right in trying to secede. Congratulations Virginians, for standing up for yourself and being proud of your history! Let all them damn Yankees carp all they want… you will never kill southern pride – and the South will rise again!
Horseshit, apologist.
I am glad your favorite side lost –Big!
WOW!!!!
That’s, that’s, that’s BEAUTIFUL!!!
Thank you for that link. I wish I could put in on a billboard in downtown Dallas, Texas.
Wow. That screed made me want to tear down some curtains and sew a hoop dress.

Back story.
Thanks for dropping by, Mrs. McDonnell.
still fighting ? give it up the wars over, and you lost ,over 100 years ago !
I heard a boatload of your kind of of crap when I spent time in NC while in the USAF
Give it up it’s over !
LOL!!!
Um…hate to break it to you….all history is “revisionist” history. If it weren’t, there’d be no point to it, would there?
Prolly from a Carpetbagger family. Only thing southern about ‘em is the address.
Isn’t that projection of the Sons of Confederate Veterans classic conservative-reactionary rhetoric.
No doubt they will be commemorating on Friday the 145th anniversary of the Battle of Appomattox, at which the Army of Virginia unconditionally surrendered to the United States of America.
And about Lincoln at 55. He did not violate his agreement. He responded to a direct attack launched from the Battery at Charleston by Arsenal cadets and their instructor that was was aimed at a US Army fort that was otherwise protecting Charleston Harbor. An attack that was an act of war on the United States of America. Every Southern state on re-entering the Union (it could have remained occupied territory) had to swear allegiance to the Union. Any legitimacy for secession again ended with that.
What’s next to appease the GOP base — Timothy McVeigh Day?
I just wanna think about it tomorrah.
“….all history is “revisionist” history” So very, very wrong. Things do happen in objective reality. The “revision” is usually done to spare hurt feelings or drive an ideology.
This is my point.
a) progressivism isn’t some north east thing.
b) What the fuck is wrong with the north east?!
Dear the south.
I wish Lincoln had let you fucking leave sometimes, I really really do.
He actually had all the right in the world as the entire south was violating the civil rights of every single slave. Every single southern state was in violation of the constitution.
Lincoln flirted with the notion of sending black people to another country. It’s too bad he couldn’t find a deserted island in the Pacific to ship defeated secessionists off to.
He tried Mexico, they sent em back
Don’t tell me we have to fight you boys again?
Isn’t the re-enactment every year enough for you?
Could you really do that, Jettison Us … Oh Please
your dad was a jazz musician who hated black people?
really, that is hilarious.
Uh, “Treason in Defense of Slavery month”? WTF kind of message is that supposed to send??? Besides, I don’t believe the governor of ANY state ought to be caught up in ANY non-governmental monkey-business such as this. This is personal stuff for a private group, which I don’t have a problem with. In fact, if the Governor wants to be a member of this group, that’s perfectly fine with me, but not on the state governments time!
It’s not hilarious, it’s f*ing almost TRAGIC. That’s just messed up and sad…
NC? Good lord! I feel for you. That place is 30 years behind the time. I almost got beat-up in a waffle House for saying I ordered hash browns instead of grits (heresy!) and the next day almost got arrested for driving the correct way down a two-way street divided by a yellow line!Local rules, don’ cha know. Don’t even get me started about “Swea’ tea.”
