President Obama said Monday that he was revamping American nuclear strategy to substantially narrow the conditions under which the United States would use nuclear weapons.
Well, this oughta be fun.
Powertools sees yet another Munich.
The problem is that our enemies understand symbolism and maybe take it too seriously. To them, today’s announcement is another sign that our government has gone soft, and one more inducement to undertake aggressive action against the United States.
Erick Erickson wonders,
How many Americans are going to die because of the Obama administration’s incompetent handling of our national security?
(ed. note: Hopefully fewer than under George W. Bush, Erick!)
Noted tough guy and decorated keyboard warrior Dan Riehl spits,
We can’t get this weakling out of the WH fast enough.
Atlas Juggs predicts our looming national date rape.
Obama says to our enemies, bring it on, we won’t fight ya — leaving us bare naked vulnerable like a virgin slipped a Rohypnol on her first date with a Chicagoland gangsta.
And Roger L. Simon asks exactly the same rhetorical questions he always asks.
What are we to make of this and the man who is adopting this policy? Does he hate us? Does he hate this country?
Speaking of America-haters: St. Reagan of California wanted to abolish nuclear weapons.
Have a nice day, morans.

About Firedoglake
It’s always seemed to me that the right-wingers are the ones who take symbolism too seriously, usually to the exclusion of any pragmatic perception of reality.
Yeah! Like we got out of Iraq and Afghanistan as soon as W and Darth weren’t around to keep us there! Wait….
In another minute, another wingnut will compare Obama to Neville Chamberlain. They won’t know who Neville was (one of the Neville brothers?), but they will make the comparision anyway.
Otherwise, Bill O’Reilly will do it tonight on teevee.
Donde esta la snarktag?
But.. But St Ronnie DID hate this country… Look at the long slide down of wages and the standard of living for the so-called Middle Class, he put mentally challenged out of hospitals and on to the street, he killed education in California and on and on… No wonder California is in such deep financial trouble!! St Ronnie my ass more like a Devils disciple if ya ask me!!!
What does ghoulish Bill “All war, all the time” Kristol have to say about this?
Sounds a lot like yer basic Rethug platform.
I’m waiting to hear the logic of how this makes Orahma comparable to Hitler.
“Bomb Iran!”
What else does he ever say?
“Hell…we ain’t come this far just to dump this thing in the drink…”
Thanks, BT. (And Major T.J. Kong.)
Raygun also closed lots of Military bases, esp. in his home state of California and exported tons of jobs overseas, for his Corp donors.
IOKIYAR
What do Attorney General Lindsay Graham and Secretary of State Jim DeMint say about this unilateral disarmament by the Kenyan Usurper?
Wait. I think I can answer my own question: Hitler didn’t have nukes, Orahma doesn’t WANT nukes. Therefore Orahma = Hitler!
La snark tag esta implicado. lol
TAKE IT AWAY — RANDY!!!
Logic? They don’t need no steenkin’ logic.
Hasn’t Obama caught or killed more terrorist than Junior? Per usual, facts do not apply.
Those ninnies don’t care about Obamas nuke policy, they’re all just racisits!
But has he played dress-up in a flight suit? Didn’t think so!
Yeah, how many Americans were killed by terrorists during Obama’s first year in office, compared to how many during Junior’s first year?
You got a deck o’ cards to prove it ?!!
Senator !
Junior never caught a terrorist. The only ones that were nabbed under him where turrists. The ones who hated ‘Murca for our freedoms.
That is cause O doesn’t have the need show off his package.
Petro!
Not quite, but the recent O’visit to Afghanistan was a exercise in Militaristic Sartorial Wear.
Are you saying W the Chimp had little man syndrome? Oh say it ain’t so!
Yeah, but he didn’t land on an aircraft carrier.
It’s pretty obvious. Is it a representative sample?
so true!!
Reagan was very strongly influenced by the show “the day after”. He started down his path against nukes after that.
Maybe they should replay it on Fox as “The movie that Scared Reagan!”
O is gonna put John McCain in Poland and give him crates of Viagra … he’ll be able to shoot down multiple missiles, even in the Stratosphere …
Spocko !
How are you, my friend ?
Not at all — Reagan was anti-nuke from the time of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Read the last link.
I think it must have scared him because he and Jason Robards shared a brain
Well, actually…
We have always had nukes as deterrence, to use in response to an attack with WMDs.
Now that we have expanded the definition of WMDs to include IEDs, we should have nuked someone in response to all the attacks made with IEDs.
I think The Republicans have a point!
/s
Leather jacket? Please.
He needs to be donning an actual military uniform to be a real Faux Terror Warrior.
Fortunately, our President is utterly immune to right-wing criticism.
That’s enough of that, girls. Don’t make me cross my legs! ;).
Hey! I caught a wire twice more than Bush did and took a catapult shot fully three more times. Does that make me a hero or did I miss out because I wasn’t wearing the male enhancing flight suit?
Oh, I’m leaving . . .
Dumbya did not land the Plane on the carrier, they gave him a few minutes at the controls [plane was prolly on auto Pilot the whole time]
What plane[s] didja fly ?
I didn’t “fly” anything either. I was an airframe technician and landed on a carrier in the back of a C2 three times and was launched off a carrier deck in the same model aircraft four times. I’m aware that Bush was just a passenger. Oh and you can’t “take the controls” from the back seat of an S3 no matter what the publicity said.
I would be good if Mr Simon would answer the question,
That musta been fun, esp the landing part.
First K-Lo fishing for dime-store decadence to get her freak on with, and now Atlas Juggs drops her dog-eared copy of the John Bolton Hornbook long enough to pen a little Harlequin ho-mance.
What a world, what a world.
;>)
I see your error … you’ve forgotten that Roger Simon and his ilk are all batshit crazy. *g*
Teddy, You’re just too funny. Thanks, I needed a good smile this morning
747s don’t do that well. Something about overshoot.
Here’s another example of how the mainstream right and left attack each other relentlessly while neither side admits to reality.
It’s sadly ridiculous that the neocons quoted in the article think that Obama is getting soft on national security.
The thing is, it’s also sadly ridiculous that many liberals believe Obama is backing off the US’s pro-war, pro-attack stance:
“Erick Erickson wonders,
How many Americans are going to die because of the Obama administration’s incompetent handling of our national security?
(ed. note: Hopefully fewer than under George W. Bush, Erick!) ”
Um, hopefully, but not likely, since Obama has sent over more troops and is making no moves to hold the previous administration accountable for their massive war crimes. Why? Because those war crimes have not been discontinued. And we won’t be ending these wars any time soon (we could, but we aren’t).
Concerning the nuclear strategy: it might have been a good idea to note that Iran and North Korea aren’t included in Obama’s decision “not to nuke everybody.” We don’t need to “nuke everybody.” We only want to nuke Iran and North Korean, so it was relatively easy for Obama to create a nuclear security plan that includes the option to nuke Iran and North Korea (and, really, any country that doesn’t cooperate with us, if you read the plan).
This country is going downhill, and it will continue to do so until the average American realizes that all of us average Americans need to wake up and realize that the government (Dems and Repubs) do not are about us and are not doing anything to improve our quality of life. They have been proven to lie to us (I mean, how do any of you trust Obama after the health care fiasco).
We need to stop attacking each other because it’s exactly what those in power want. If we stop attacking each other, we may start seeing them for who they really are.
ROFL !!!
Oh, even the landing part was a hoot. Not for the faint of tummy though. The cat shots were what I enjoyed most though. :-)
That doesn’t mean I can’t ask the question and have their batshit craziness proven to all, again, by their response.
Just asking them a question would make their heads explode. They don’t like being questioned.
There is nothing ‘mainstream’ about Erick Erickson or any of the other people I’ve linked. They are radicals and should be treated as such.
ROFLMAO!!!
Senator Mary!!!
Who loves ya, baby?
;>)
TO THE MOD: Please see Comment #45 above, and if you are OK with that, then please stop harrassing me. I’ve NEVER come close to that. I’m starting to wonder . . .
[modnote: offending comment removed, thank you.]
I wonder how long CNN is going to be saddled with him? They just couldn’t stay away from the wingnuttery though. Beck out, Erickson in, as if he’s any better.
Must.Resist.Temptation.
Now I was having a fairly good day until you did that. :)
LOL … I knew twas better to resist clicking on DB’s link.
What a bummer…
8-(
I give Erickson 6 months before he pulls a Michael Savage.
Seems to still have his integrity, though, and I really like him. He’ll be around somewhere.
Hi! Right now kind of down. Turns out that getting two talk radio host fired and costing a rw radio station millions as well as developing a strategy to impact rw media financially is not a great career move. None of the folks I approached hoping for funding knew what to do with me since I didn’t fit their boxes. I’m going to have to figure out how to get back to the world of bowing, scraping and helping the top 1 percent. It’s been interesting and I’m sorry I wasn’t smart enough to sell my skills to help outside. Wingnut welfare is more powerful than people understand.
Really? That long? I thought he had jumped the shark good and proper with that shotgun on a census worker thing.
I always make that mistake :)
Just in time for Sweeps. The Carny News Network has plenty of fish heads per contract for Erick the Geek.
;>)
Got Milk???
aw gee!!
I think he’s avoided imploding on national teevee. Only a matter of time before he drops an n-bomb, though.
What’s wrong with comment #45? I must be missing something…
You’ve done great work for the cause. Talk to Jane and the other Saber rattlers on the intertoobz, they might give you some great insights.
Here’s hoping you find the perfect balance, between doing what you love and making a comfortable income doing so ! [ It's what I wish for myself, every day ]
Thanks. Now, maybe you would ask yourself why you are holding me on probation? I know I’ve been behaving myself, and intend to keep doing so. Having every comment marked “‘pending approval” makes me feel like a second-class Firepup. Think about it, will ya?
Ah! Yep, I agree. I hadn’t thought of the “N bomb”. I find it so hard to think like a bigoted jerk…
OMG Margaret…we must be related. I have (er, had) an A&P license!
Who is it this time … Rove or Cheney ?
If you haven’t read this piece yet, please do:
A Method to Republican ‘Madness’
- Tom
I’m jealous. Always wanted to hitch a ride in an F-4 off a carrier deck. Can’t get that kinda ride at DizzyWorld.
Offending comment was removed, and yours got bumped to #45.
Namaste SD !
It’s gone, Margaret. It was about n***** a group we dislike. I really wouldn’t have any issue with that kind of rhetoric, but if you notice, they’ve been “pending approval” me for weeks because I said something much milder a long time ago. I was really trying to assert my own right to unimpeded commentary. It feels like a slap every time they do it.
See? I toldja we were related yesterday over the language thing. ;-)
Didn’t know the comments would bump like that when one was removed. Cool new controls. :-)
Of course…The wholesome kind.
;>)
Very odd indeed. I’ve never actually used mine, and it has lapsed. But at one point I could have used it. I have always wanted to work with my hands but I have never gotten the ehem, balls, to actually do it.
Namaste Petro!
When Rocky Lizard gives the word, Obama will lay the eggs.
I stopped chasing the work when I got laid off from Grumman when congress canceled the F-14D program and laid me off with 20,000 other people. Later they merged with Northrup and laid off a bunch more. No thanks. Mine lapsed almost fifteen years ago.
yyyeeeeeeeeeeeeehhhaaaaaaaaaaaawww!
just can’t get enough cowboy diplomacy!
Oh sure, now you show up ! *g*
If Obama isn’t careful, he is going to open a can of worms here, the can of worms being the appropriate theory of nuclear deterrence. Should it be the “massive retaliation”, madman theory, which we have followed for 65 years, with all its expense, risks of proliferation, and danger of nuclear winter (if implemented), or “minimum deterrence”, which asks, “how many weapons do we need to deter a nuclear attack?”, and stops building there. Put them all on submarines to remove the targets from the mainland, and further reduce the danger of an attack. Save the money we’re spending on the Massive Retaliaition infrastructure.
Yep, well said.
I think of our society structured as a sort of sandwich.
The top layer is the corporatocracy. There is a thin layer below that colored red on the right side, and blue on the other. Those components are fighting for all the perks and power. Then there is a big fat blob underneath called the american people. When they look up they see a shade of blue or red and figure that’s their team when really we’re all in it together.
I’ve never seen anything of the kind regarding your comments so it probably only shows up for you. Yeah, I could see why that would make you feel second class. Kudos to you for hanging in. I’m not sure I would under that kind of scrutiny.
Thanks.
I always think that when I prove what I do works and I can replicate it people will see that as proof I know what I’m doing and say, “we need this guy!” One thing I’ve learned from Jane is that some of the groups are what she calls “veal pens” and they don’t want to scare their donors. One of the groups I approached told me point blank I was too aggressive I’m my attacks and the response I would draw would be too high profile. They didn’t want to draw the ire of the rw media.
Petro!
I’m here to protect your precious bodily fluids.
Eww. Unless those fluids include free gasoline, I think I’ll leave the protecting to you. ;-)
It’s a hundred thousand entitled types standing in shitwater up to their necks yelling ‘DON’T MAKE A WAVE!’ sometimes, isn’t it? Meanwhile, coming up behind them full tilt on the speedboat…
;>)
Does The Census or any government agency advertise on CNN?
If so they have some leverage. “We want a real retraction or we pull the ads.”
Financial pressure is all a non-subsidized right winger listen too.
It’s Ronnie RayGun bottle feeding Chimp!!
Yeah, it’s been pretty hard to take, especially considering that my comments have been so carefully measured and restrained. I didn’t realize I was the only one who saw the “pending approval” tag. Not sure if that makes it better, or worse. I hate censorship. We’re all grown-ups here. And it’s not as though I don’t totally support the site or its goals.
Unfortunately that seems to be true.
That’s a wholesome AHMURRICUN chimp, too.
;>)
“Wartime for Bonzo”?
Yep.
Maybe it’s because of who I’m interested in working against. My current focus is the open carry gun movement.
I’m figuring out a strategy to get them out of coffee shops and restaurants. Now I’m going after right wingers with guns instead of right wingers with microphones.
Resistance is useless.
Surely you can petition to be removed? Obviously I’ve not seen the comment that got you put on probation but though I’ve seen you vehement, I don’t think I’ve ever seen you being offensive. Heck, if vehemence gets you in trouble, I would be banned. Again, I have no idea what you said and don’t want to know but you seem to have learned the limitations.
I tried to get the media on the NewsCorp financial conference call to ask how long was Fox planning to subsidize the money losing Glenn Beck show. Nobody asked. Then I tried to get the institutional investors to ask when Beck will make money. No one asked. The show lost 81 advertisers. That fact should be part of ever Glenn Beck story because it makes it clear he is not safe for commercial broadcast and must be propoganda.
His ROI is measured in ideological gains. The rw media is weaker than we think without their supports. The companies that believed that rw radicals are good for business are fooling themselves. The Scaife, Koch, Moon and Peterson folks propping up the rw media are there for a reason.
I’ll just say I’ve seen many comments that were more incendiary than any I’ve ever made, without intervention. Even today, when someone openly called for revolution. All my recent comments have made clear that I am against using violence as a tactic. You’ve probably seen them. And, yes, I have learned the limitations, and mean to observe them. I’ve had to wonder if it’s a personal thing. And the idea of having to make a formal petition for participation on an equal basis feels quite demeaning. My support for this site should be obvious to anyone.
I’ve always said that the only thing most of these people understand is money. I’ve tried to organize national days of strike in order to get their attention. The response couldn’t even be described as “tepid”. I managed to convince exactly nobody into giving up a day’s pay to do something other than sit behind a keyboard and gripe.
That’s reflective of the problem we have with all our issues, isn’t it? People prefer to sit back and let the activists fight for their freedom for them. Maybe they all deserve to become livestock?
The phrase “follow the money” isn’t just for journalists. The money is both easier and harder to follow these days. So for example I can find out how much money the Tea party e xpress is spending on hiring Joe the Plumber or their token black entertainers (to stop any racist accusations) but when it comes time to explain that to the people covering in the media don’t care because Sarah Palin is the top of the show. I won’t be able to find out how much she was paid until the group paying her files their report. By then it’s old news.
I tried to get the ABC tv guy in Las Vegas to ask that question of the organizers and he said, “what’s the big deal? Shouldn’t speakers be paid?”
Indeed. Good points. The info about Beck’s advertisers leaving him in droves is out there, but you just don’t see much about it unless you really search. Fox has keeps pumping out that Beck’s viewership is in the X number of millions (or whatever), and that’s good enough for them.
Well, hmmmm… for someone like the Pirate Murdoch to agree to underwrite Beck – even with his zillions of viewers – as a financially losing proposition – hmmm… there’s gotta be more here than meets the eye. Whenever was Murdoch ever known to be some kind of philanthropist, even for his rich chrony buddies???
What the “average” citizen doesn’t get is that the Murdochs, the Kochs, the Moons, etc, don’t do or produce stuff just because a lot of conservatives want to read or hear or see it. No: they do it for the money alone – either directly through corporate sponsorship of ads, or indirectly through other perks, lurks, and goodies that they get for pumping out the propoganda.
But: I do just love me some Slim Pickens riding that there nuke! Yeeeeeee haaawww!
Yes. Think of the ROI of funding think tanks. What kind of world has that created? One with low or no taxes for corporations and a base that is misinformed on taxes. Energy think tanks brought us muddy waters on global warming and “drill baby drill” war in Iraq and leases on oil in environmentally sensative places.
The pay offs can be huge.
The only better use of money is lobbyists.
It’s “moron,” not moran. Well Moran is one of my state congressmen, so maybe they are interchangeable.
Uh, the spelling is snark based on this picture.
After Erickson tells his readers that it is okay to threaten U.S. Census workers with shotguns, he will claim that there never was an accurate headcount in the first place.
I would ask that we write Glenn Beck and the rest of Fox New and have an event including the the Congressmen & women as well as the Senators to one location and then [Edited by Moderator]l!!!
Your comment is awaiting Moderator approval.
Gee! We were the first to have Nukes.
The only ones to ever use them.
Yet we are worried about nuclear terrorists. Maybe we should look in the mirror.
We started the cold war. Russia got the bomb to defend against us, the only ones that had them before they did.
Yet we make everybody in the world out to be the bad guys, while we run roughshawed over everybody and flaunt our Nukes.
We accidently dropped nukes on Spain and even on our own Country. Luckily they didn’t go off. We are an accident waiting to happen, and yet Obama will be the bad guy for trying to cut back on the Nukes.
Man razorbrain, what misbehavior did you perform to receive total mod control?
You’ve got to behave yourelf …
LOL. You came in at the third act, my friend. If curious, scan above starting at #59.
Uh, yeah, that’s really the point to take away from what I wrote.
No sense for any of us to take a long hard look at what our government really is doing. The right think the president is a bleeding heart liberal, and the left, for some strange reason, continues to believe in him.
This new nuclear strategy isn’t soft (right) and it isn’t changing anything (left). If anything, it’s reconfirming the strategy of going after Iran, North Korea, and anyone else with whom we do not agree.
I’m not sure where you get, from this particular post, me somehow carrying Obama’s water.
“These people are acting like total idiots” is not the same thing as “OMG OBAMA IS THE BEST PREZNIT EVER!”
If you’re conflating them, that’s your problem.
I was relieved to see your posts, ghostofgreed. I had the exact same “gut” response to this supposedly earthshaking piece of news.
It felt, once again, manipulative. Uber manipulative. Because you’re absolutely spot on: Obama and company could care less right now about using nuclear weapons on other countries. That’s not what they’re gunning for. Nope, the real prize is Iran, and potentially N. Korea. Lo and behold, the two “exceptions” noted by our man in the W.H.
Basically, what this announcement did…is create the illusion of being committed to pared down nuclear use. Repeat: illusion. I saw it immediately.
And why would he make such a statement?
Pretty simple to see: To try and get his progressive FDL-type base back on board after the mess he made of healthcare. (And rendition, and warrantless wiretapping, and 48,000 more troops in Afghanistan, and no rights for those illegally detained/tortured/murdered in U.S. military prisons, and stonewalling FOIA requests…and…and…and..)
Basically, this is no change in policy, regardless of the words our president used. (Pattern, anyone?) None. Zippo. Iran is still on the table, big time. As is N. Korea. The two places on the planet where war escalation could occur in a nanosecond with just the right “trigger.” (The obfuscation just doesn’t quit, does it?)
P.S. Russia still may back out of the upcoming bilateral nuke treaty sometime in the future due to the planned missile defense system the U.S. is stubbornly insisting be built close to the Russian border in Central Europe. Prediction: If the system goes ahead full steam, Russia will indeed back out, with Obama and friends then being able to point their fingers at the Russ-kies for being “uncooperative” as they look like the big peacemakers.
