I’m working on a couple of different post ideas that I had hoped would be ready for serving up to you all right now. But they’re not, so instead I’m serving up this veggie burger with a side of champ (an Irish dish featuring potatoes and shallots), with a glass each of milk and water to wash it all down.
So where does one get a veggie burger and champ? Kieran’s Irish Pub in Minneapolis, that’s where. Delish!
So what did life serve up for you this week? C’mon, sit down. Eggs are scrambled; I stole some coffee from the rec room; the cream’s in the fridge and the Splenda’s on the table. There may be doughnuts later, if the batter I made last night turned out.

Mmm burgers – oh wait :)
What did life serve up for me this week? Amazing weather. It’s supposed to cool down into the 60s for next week with some rain, but still, that is frankly great stuff; I’ll take it.
So champ is mashed potatos and green onions?
Pretty much, with butter and whipping cream mixed in. It’s delicious, if you like mashed potatoes.
Same here. We’ll take the rain — in fact, we’ll take about five inches of what the folks on the coast just got, spread out over a week.
Let’s see, what else is happening?
– The Vatican’s had a really, um, awkward week.
– Jerry Ford OKed warrantless wiretapping as president.
– Dan Quayle is still, well, Dan Quayle.
yeah the Vatican really knows damage control, ay ay ay!
Just read the Quayle piece. Repubs do an excellent job of re-writing history. This will be on FoxNews and Rush’s show and it will be believed by many.
The other big con he’s trying to pull is pretending the tea party is still an entity separate from the GOP, when its leadership got Borged by the RNC. I suspect what Dan’s really trying to do is to keep them from bolting the GOP ranch.
David Frum said an interesting thing that got lost in all the other news. He said that the repubs used to own FoxNews, now FoxNews owns the repubs.
Same goes with the tea-partiers.
His son is running for something. He must want to get his name back in the news. Why, I don’t know.
It’s amazing. They have no freaking clue what to do any more.
In terms of reactionary conservatism fighting a changing world, JPII was the Ronald Reagan to Ratzi’s GW Bush: JPII was slicker and politer about it, but his conservatism and Ratzi’s are the same. In fact, Ratzi was JPII’s chief advisor, especially in the last years of JPII’s life.
Like Bush and his clique, Ratzi and his clique think that reality will just bend to their will and that they can do what they want without consequence. Like Bush and his clique, Ratzi’s slowly discovering that this isn’t how the game’s played nowadays.
This is what five decades of pushing the corporate-racist alliance known as the “Southern Strategy” gets you — especially as America is firmly moving into a multicultural mindset. Sow the crazy bigot wind, reap the uncontrollably crazy bigot whirlwind.
If that’s the case you neo-Bolsheviks should be quite happy. In fact, if what the dopey Republicans are doing is so dumb, you should be encouraging it and congratulating them on it, rather than making fun of them in your usual juvenile manner.
Looks like Champ should be on my chomping list. Otherwise I am a chump!
I need a good recipe for veggieburger. I’ve not yet found one that is on my regular rotation. Suggestions?
“the Splenda’s on the table”
PW I had to stop using Splenda. I had used it for several months and along with regular exercise, I trimmed right down and had a nearly flat stomach. Unfortunately though, after a while I began having severe abdominal pain, my Doc thought it was an ulcer and ran a whole bunch of tests( tests I paid for out of pocket due to lack of insurance) that came back negative. It was a comment on this site that clued me in , apparently some folks experience stomach trouble when using Splenda .I stopped using it and within a few days the pain went away and has not returned.
I looked up Champ on Google. Essentially, the way I make mashed potatoes, either green onions or shallots.
What never fails to amaze me is how many times foods heavy in carbs and/or fat are then served in combination with some type of diet substance, like diet Coke or Splenda.
Oh well, I take my coffee black!
And good morning to you, too! Nice to see your projection screens are in good working order.
Hey, gotta make up for the carb overload somewhere!
Wow! Do you get the pains with anything else, like stevia powder?
Don’t know went back to sugar ,will just have to exercise that much harder
In from the garden patch after putting in a few peas, if you please. Beginning to recycle several hundred feet of 5 foot, wide hole, wire mesh fence, (former dog yard fence at the roadside waiting for the garbage truck, called owner for prior permission to collect) to cage rows of future greens to protect from wild turkeys and deer. I can’t manage enough acreage to let them have some and still have some for myself. Another month or so and the wandering flocks of thirty or so 5 lb hatchlings will be thoroughly through everything.
As you went briefly to some events of the past week, this link is along my recollections of history and view of GOP tactics, interesting read:
http://www.truthout.org/how-republicans-win58229
and might suggest ways to some, ideas to counter the right.
Oooh, peas! Alas, it’s a bit too chilly for those here right now, at least on my northeast-facing balcony.
I’ve been singing Bob Parry’s praises at my home blog, Mercury Rising, for years. He was warning people back in the 1970s about the conservative plans for a takeover, not just of media, but of education from grade school to college, and of research labs and think tanks — pretty much every part of society dedicated to explaining objective reality to us. People didn’t start listening until the 1990s, but the response was half-hearted and badly-funded. The rise of the internet is what’s saved us so far: If it wasn’t for Salon, Clinton would have been forced by his own party to resign — and probably Gore too, as that was Newt Gingrich’s plan.
How do you like stevia? Isn’t it linked to cancer? Have you tried baking with it?
Both of the dishes shown above look extremely appetizing.
Good work Phoenix!
If you like champ, try colcannon! Mashed spuds with cream, butter, and grated cabbage. With a good dark bread and a pint of Guinness, it’s a meal!
