Late Night: Sister Max Baucus Explains It All for You |
| By: Gregg Levine Friday March 26, 2010 8:00 pm |
We all have to appreciate honesty and transparency in this age of misdirection, obfuscation, and triangulation. So, let me rise and extend my compliments to Senator Max Sieben Baucus (D-MT), who, in the midst of a dewy-eyed tribute on the Senate floor, said just about all you need to know about the new health care reform law, and the 14-month fight to shape it.
Breaking News: GOP Fires Bin Laden |
| By: Eli Friday March 26, 2010 6:01 pm |
In a shocking turn of events, the Republican Party has fired Osama bin Laden from his long-term position as Chief Fearmonger & Boogeyman. Mr. bin Laden received a letter earlier this afternoon informing him that his services will no longer be required, citing three principal reasons for his dismissal:
Senate Officially Adjourns; UI/COBRA Benefit Will Expire for Many |
| By: David Dayen Friday March 26, 2010 5:50 pm |
The Majority Leader’s office says they will offer retroactive benefits to those who miss a payment. And that’s fine. But let’s be clear: this is a massively inefficient way to do business. Letting things like unemployment benefits expire means that the state offices must contact every individual in that category, tell them they’re done, only to have to tell them again when the benefits get restored, leading to mass confusion and uncertainty, as well as actual expenses for those states. Who picks up the bill for that?
Dept. of Justice: Scott Roeder Is Not a Terrorist |
| By: emptywheel Friday March 26, 2010 5:17 pm |
If we find evidence that, in addition to harboring pedophiles, Pope Benedict and the American Catholic Bishops have been intimidating women and their doctors, would Scott Roeder be considered a terrorist (recognizing, of course, there is no allegation that the Catholic Church endorses violence of the type Roeder used)? Or would it take a brown man, involved in the plot, for DOJ to consider this terrorism?
Whirlpool Layoffs Begin: 465 Workers on Their Last Shift Today |
| By: Michael Whitney Friday March 26, 2010 5:05 pm |
After a valiant effort by the Evansville community to save the jobs of more than 1,000 people, Whirlpool is moving unabated in shutting down the operations of its Indiana plant – starting today. This marks yet another entry in the long record of American companies killing American jobs in search of cheap labor. And for what? A 77% raise for its CEO, plus $19 million in stimulus funds.
The 390 Terrorists Convicted in Civilian Courts |
| By: emptywheel Friday March 26, 2010 4:20 pm |
The Department of Justice has just sent a letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee answering early questions about how many terrorists have been convicted or plead guilty in civilian courts. Between those convicted of terrorism-related crimes (150) and individuals with ties to international terrorism convicted of other crimes (like obstruction or perjury–the total here is 240), 390 people have been sent to prison using our civilian courts. Not on this list? Right-wing American terrorists like Scott Roeder.
Paul Ryan Blasts Obamacare, Calls for Government Takeover of Health Insurance |
| By: Scarecrow Friday March 26, 2010 3:31 pm |
Today’s New York Times hands over a portion of its op-ed page to Representative Paul Ryan (R-WI) to explain what Republicans would do to replace Obamacare, a.k.a., Armageddon and the end of American democracy as we know it. Answer: a government takeover of health insurance.
Republicans: Violent Losers |
| By: Frank Schaeffer Friday March 26, 2010 2:29 pm |
The Republicans have drunk deep at the well of their version of bad back woods moonshine. And their tainted moonshine of misinformation has blinded them. All they have left is the threat of violence.
