Top Vatican officials — including the future Pope Benedict XVI — did not defrock a priest who molested as many as 200 deaf boys, even though several American bishops repeatedly warned them that failure to act on the matter could embarrass the church, according to church files newly unearthed as part of a lawsuit.
This, of course, is after several years of American Church authorities not acting on the case.
And these are the folks that dictate … and sadly, have the political muscle … over reproductive rights in major health care legislation because of their “moral authority”.

It’s a wonder that St. Peter’s hasn’t developed a great huge fissure through the middle, after elevating to ‘infallibility’ a prelate whose judgment in earlier service was definitively flawed.
This particular paedophile in chief at the vatican is more like Cheney than NIxon wouldn’t you think?
I think this new Pope might get sick soon and resign retire or accidently die the Church cannot survive this.
Heck the Mormons might have to stop accepting Catholic cash against Gay Marriage because its tainted thats how low the Church has sunk.
Message discipline.
Nixon: there was never a cover-up
Vatican: men are superior to women
Tea Party: this healthcare bill is socialist
White House: this healthcare bill is compassionate
Corporate America: whatever it is, thank you very much
Veal Pen Progressives: we can’t let the
terroriststeabaggers winDarth and the Pope both did approve torture however the Pope just focused on kids.
Not really he was just doing what the catholics have done for eons, supporting the Nazis and being a paedolphile is par for the course with those buggers. Child abuse is part of the priest and nun’s training I believe, to say nothing of bigotry, racism and greed. A lovely bunch those christians.
Ratzinger was already gunning for Archbishop Weakland. Another embarassment for Milwaukee. And just like Nixon, if you pull enough thread, you find politics behind every single decision.
(Mad M$ Paint skillz, Doc.)
The Pope gives us moral guidance based on God? I’m thinking this Pope might prove wrong the whole concept of Papal Infallibly.
Papal Infallibly for you non Catholics is the concept that on religious matter the Pope is guided by God and never wrong on religious matters.
Ignoring it when a Priest does it is part of Church Culture but Nuns? They have no perks like Priests
do. Thats why they are called Nuns no perks, no power, no voice in deciding things.
then perhaps that wrong judgment was political – deciding that the sex abuse would be okay as long as the church covered it up.
Yeah that’s pretty much it.
Abuse this egregious would have been punished in any other Archdiocese. Ratzinger avoided defroocking the monster in order to embarass Weakland.
Nuns don’t do what?

200 deaf kids raped just how do you ignore or rationalize not turning him into the Cops? The Church is against Gay’s getting Married who are of legal age and want to but this Pope does not think 200 underaged kjds getting raped is not a matter for the police?
One rule for of Age Consenting Gays another for Pedophile Priests is that the message the church wants to send?
I think one has to look at how much money the diocese was bringing in every week. The Papists just love their money so they can buy lots of shiny gold stuff and wear fancy dresses wit funny hats.
Those morals standards are just for the common folks with their pennances/pittances, huh? sounds republican.
In Boston the previous cardinal tried to sell the idea that it was a few rogue “gay” priests that somehow got into the system. He was trying to damn gays by trying to equate paedophelia with being gay…..it worked very well for the worshipers of fantasy.
I stand corrected.
Good point linking Gay to having sex with kids is wrong. Hey I like Women that does not mean I like underage girls.
Sad isn’t it. We grew up in Ireland, our family is agnostic and were treated as though we had the plague. The early schools were all catholic institutions when I was growing up and my sister and I were set off in a separate space and segregated in class so that we would not contaminate the other children. The town in which we lived, like many towns in Ireland back then, had community christmas parties and other community gatherings….we were barred.
We both grew up knowing friends of ours that were being buggered and abused and this was 60 years ago. I have nothing but disgust for “christianity” and fantasy believers. Vile they are….all of them.
Somebody needs to ask Bart Stupak about this.
Get him on camera: Is he proud of working with these people?

My Bold Cardinal Law advises the Pope on Family?
Better to be an outcast than raped you were lucky. Have you seen this film?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Magdalene_Sisters
Maybe Lisa could have a film nite with this film. Books film the Lake focuses to much on new stuff but I fear those who forget the past do repeat the future.
Yes and read the book(s). My sister and I still keep up on this stuff though reading and seeing it is still hard.
That he would have that bastard Law still giving him BJs is no surprise. Figurative, not literal.
NYT Headline: Vatican Declined to Defrock U.S. Priest Who Abused Boys
If he abused over 200 boys, it seems like the problem was keeping his frock on.
It’s well to be suspicious of any group of people that wants to force women to have babies. Any way you cut it, that’s just weird.

Not a lawyer but this sounds like he’s playing games.
More seriously, this is just another instance of betrayal and infidelity, particularly in cases where the betrayer is held in high esteem.
The other recent examples being Tiger Woods (also sexual) and Obama (e.g., working with insurance and medical lobbyists while promising Americans he was working only for them).
Since betrayal is just a synonym for enlightenment, it seems there’s a big moment of enlightenment occurring collectively – if we’re willing to see it.
The image that keeps coming up as I write this is of Icarus falling back to earth (the fallibility of the Pope, or “the world’s best golfer,” or the chosen one) – but not from the viewpoint of Icarus himself, which has been the position of the United States and those in it as it is forced to give up its view of American exceptionalism and to confront its failings and its mortality, but from the viewpoint of those who did not suffer from the inflation themselves. The story of Icarus as seen by those who didn’t lose themselves and leave the earth.
It’s the confusion of self with infallibly perfect God, but one step removed and more grounded and human. To that extent, this is actually a sign of collective progress and hope.
It’s just another blatant example of how corrupt the process and outcome were in the HCR charade.
Good morning, pups. It’s Collins and Kristof today. Ms. Collins, in “Brave New Health Care World,” says the health care bill is a clear sign that change is afoot in America, but the Senate is just as eccentric as ever. Mr. Kristof addresses “Escaping From Poverty,” and says even though there’s no magic bullet, experiments with jobs and schooling gleaned promising results for improving the lives of the poor.
Here they are.
The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are ready, and I’ve got banana pancakes this morning. Time for me to go and see how many kittehs are lined up on the porch awaiting breakfast. Have a great day.

Jobs help, too. have to read to see, did Kristoff follow through to the conclusion indicated?
Good morning all. We are in good hands, with the pope. /s
after adjusting for inflation, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. A second is the breakdown in the family and the explosion in single-parent households. A third is the quintupling of incarceration rates beginning in 1970, making it harder for impoverished young men to play a role in families or get decent jobs.
When those factors converge — a young woman with a 10th-grade education trying to raise a couple of kids as a single parent — poverty proves almost inescapable. Often the cycle is transmitted from generation to generation.
Still, there’s a reason for hope: We’re getting a much better handle on what policies can overcome poverty. We’re now seeing more experiments, modeled after randomized drug trials, that measure carefully whether an approach works and how cost-effective it is. Partly this reflects the rise of economists (at the expense of political scientists and do-gooders) and the rigor they pack in their briefcases.

What no mention of Reagan, America being broke fighting a stupid war, the destruction of Union Jobs, The rich getting Richer? CEO paychecks rising? William the Bloody is so PC its impolite to mention Class in his world race its ok to lie about.
Never read Swift’s “A Modest Proposal” huh Will even woman starving will still have sex maybe to keep from starving perhaps. In a bad economy Men can’t afford to marry Duh!
Again no Mention of Reagan or the laws that Punish Crack more than Coke.

If only poor people were rich had good lawyers and were all white then maybe prisons would not break up so many families huh William the Bloody? Class is the real PC.
Mention Class warfare and GOPers get nervous, only by pitting poor whites against poor blacks does the GOP keep power. That and discouraging African American voting.
Sorry my 34 was for Marion
This is what comes of blind obedience.
I wonder if the Pope will be called to testify? Germany certainly has enough information to start freezing Church assets and 200 victims just from this one priest?
Even the Church can’t cough up that kind of settlement money.
Never mind insurance after America, Ireland and Germany nobody not even AIG will play the odds and insure the church against sexual abuse claims now.
That’s their concern? Not the well-being of the boys, not putting a pedophile in jail. No, they didn’t want to embarass the church.
200 kids get raped normally everyone who might even have sneezed on the kids would be called in to answer questions the Pope can’t avoid this much longer.
I miss Pope John XXIII.
true enough
sad to ay, if nixon were a politician today he would have to fly under the democratic banner, far far too liberal for them
come to think of it, reagan would have to be a democrat also
you know, this is a sadder truth for the democrats then it is for the republicans
That alone is cause for embarrassment
Bill Maher made that point. He said the Dems are now Republicans and the Republicans are now crazy. (paraphrased)
So, the bill goes back to the house. Is that a problem?
…the Senate is just as eccentric as ever.
whoa – industrial-strength euphemism…
Isn’t putting the well being of others before yourself what makes people Saints? The Church is putting itself above its victims its like a cancer patient attacking a Doctor for trying to remove their cancer.
I don’t think you can say “bug-fuck crazy” in the Times.
I do too. Very much.
OT: I’m in a position right now where I need to hire a part time worker. The ad was published yesterday. People are flying into my office with their resumes/applications. This is killing me. I had a Navy Vet come in who is 100% wrong for this clerical job. They don’t care….they just want a job and a paycheck. I’m dreading today.
Way too harsh on Tricky Dick.
At least Nixon had the good manners to eventually resign.
Beautiful!
That is pretty sad. MY spouse has been taking less and less salary to avoid laying off people. If you lay someone off in this economy you condemn them to penury and that is not an option.
That was also a time when the Congress was not all of the same party.
The navy vet broke my heart. He applied for another job at my place to work in the copying dept. Both that job and the one I need to fill have been downgraded to part time to avoid paying benefits. Universal healthcare would have made both those jobs full time.
SUCH a good line
Is the Pope in legal trouble?
Don’t we have laws requiring people who become aware of probable child abuse to report it to the police? The whole point of such laws, precisely why we need them, is that all sorts of individuals and institutions besides the Church have proven all too willing to choose the protection of the offender over that of the child. The Pope’s actions in this matter would seem to fit exactly the behavior these disclosure laws were meant to punish.
Paedophelia is not a crime in catholic eyes apparently.
A perp walk through St. Peter’s. I like it.
you know, the democrats really are republicans now, in other words, the republicans really did win, the democratic party is indeed extinct
that my friends is an epiphane, the republicans have won after all
I’m off. See all later.
“Universal healthcare would have made both those jobs full time.”
Just how many part time jobs would become full time if we had Universal Healthcare? Just how many jobs will be lost because middle class consumers reduce their spending because they are forced to buy crappy insurance?
Just questions Solai I’m not expecting answers but its something to think about.
Yes the Pope should be in legal trouble but he is the Pope how long he remains Pope is another question.
If they went to an improved Medicare for all system it not only would have provided comprehensive universal health coverage at substantially lower costs , but it also would have been an enormous stimulus to the economy at a time when it is sorely needed. Not only would big business be more competitve internationally, but Americans would have so much more disposable income to pour into the economy. And since 70% of our economy is based on consumer spending the overall effect (increased business equal more jobs) would have lifted us out of recession. It’s just more evidence that what they did with HCR is completely unconscionable and corrupt.
And they wonder why intelligent human beings want nothing to do with organized religion. Sad. Bunch of hypocrites and criminals, the entire religious mafia. Oh but don’t forget to send money! Go to church every week so they can lecture you on the evils of the world, that they are.
Maybe it is time to send the Papal Ambassador home to Rome. The Vatican has diplomatic recognition and seems to be running an organized crime operation RICO in the U.S. It’s a church, not a country. It should be de-recognized. If a country’s government was running a pedophile ring of such extent surely there would be diplomatic consequences.
a p.s. NAMBLA can receive the Vatican’s ambassador.
so, i guess glenn beck will be telling his flock to leave the catholic church over this, right? or is that tactic reserved for parishes that help kids rather than f*ck them?
To cast the most cynical spin possible on the whole thing… from reproductive rights to the sexual abuse scandals… the church simply cannot afford to run out of victims.
And I say this, having been brought up during my early years as a Catholic. I’ll never go back.
Perhaps we should arm vulnerable children with AK-47s whenever they have to be alone with a priest. This could be the plot outline for the next Turtledove novel.
[MODNOTE - no violent imagery please]
We spent the weekend with our Catholic relatives…Notre Dame grad, pure Irish background back to Dublin in the 1800s (before marrying into my family, that is). In response to a question as to whether or not the pope can survive these scandals, the response was, “I’m not convinced that this problem is a Church problem and the product of celibacy; I believe it is society’s problem!” Clear denial. I asked back if he let his son out of his sight while in church. No reply. His wife said, “NO WAY!”
Probably. He seems to prefer it when the men are in charge.
