Yes the country has been in a regression for the past 40 years or so. I think it began about the time ERA failed to pass.

I studied history under a professor who loved LBJ. No matter what topic we were studying, if it was in the 20th century, he’d do his best to bring up LBJ. Dr. Gomolak was an awesome guy. I know all about the half-loaf and the shaping change behind the scenes rhetoric. The death of Kennedy helped him a great deal with the piecemeal approach that was used to get Civil Rights legislation through Congress. I get the concept.

The difference here is that Congress nor either party has any political will. They are all beholden to special interest now more than ever. They are willing to betray their fundamental tenants if they think it is to their political advantage (or is a safer bet). There is no one like LBJ to govern and lead (some say manipulate) Congress like he did.

I just think that those days are gone. Congress does not have an institutional memory anymore for those long term projects for change to develop in time. That is why tough decisions are always kicked down the road.

To me, the significance of this poll is the fact that elected officials, pretty much all Republicans, are fanning the flames. Steve King, of Iowa, apparently “slapped” a poster of Nancy Pelosi, in the face, after health care passed. I heard a clip of a radio ad directed personally against Pelosi; the hollering of “babykiller” by a member of Congress, on the floor (I don’t care whether he was calling Stupak or the bill babykiller, the behavior is new and appalling), the calling of John Lewis and Barney Frank epithets as they went about their public business. The hanging of the Maryland Eastern Shore congress person in effigy.

The “No Socialism” signs sprouting in the past year in my affluent, educated neighborhood.

The violence is escalating, and the Repubs are ramping it up, as policy.

Just because Obama and the so-called liberal Dems have disappointed us, does not mean we can afford to ignore the truly dangerous behavior of Republicans.

Did you know that, in Texas, by law, only the names of eligible candidates may be printed on the ballot? In August 2008, Attorney Boyd Richie, Chair of the Texas Democratic Party (“TDP”), signed and submitted to TX election officials a Certification of Nomination swearing Barack Obama is eligible to be President. (His Certification was exactly the same as the Certification signed by Nancy Pelosi, except his letterhead read “TDP” and hers read “DNC”; even the Notary Public, based in Denver, was the same.) TX law subjects party officials to the same public records disclosure requirements as state officials. So, under this open records law, citizens asked Mr. Richie on what documentary basis he had ascertained Mr. Obama was a Natural Born Citizen. Mr. Richie refused to produce the documentation. (Citizens also asked Nancy Pelosi but she ignored them; using the federal FOIA they asked Alice Germond, DNC Secretary and co-signer of several of these Certifications of Nomination but she also refused to produce the requested documentation, insisting (through DNC General Counsel Joseph Sandler) the DNC was not subject to public records disclosure laws. Computer programmers like to say, “garbage in, garbage out” to explain why software doesn’t work, and the same is true for polling. If you ask people a crazy question, you’re going to get crazy answers. Why? Because many people won’t take the question seriously.

If you asked people, “is it possible [insert random crazy suggestion here]“, you’re going to get a lot of people who’ll answer along the lines, “um, I guess” or “sure, why not?” or “Hmm… maybe.” That doesn’t tell you much about what these people actually believe – you’re just suggesting crazy thoughts into the minds of people who haven’t really thought about what you’re asking.

So if one is going to believe in a literal interpretation of, say, Revelations, they might want to actually read it. Or even look at the Cliff Notes. To wit: There is NO mention of an Antichrist in Revelations. Zippo, nada, negatory. There’s “a beast,” (chapter 13) but hey, let’s not quibble over words. OK, two beasts, the second not having as many horns. Whatever. All very esoteric. Nobody knows what it means.

I find his conversations with MLK particularly interesting. These men clearly had great respect for each other and it is fascinating to hear them digging into the nuts and bolts of getting s**t(difficult, ground breaking progressive legislation) done.
