Hi Suz CT Newt Sunny from the CA Central Coast (Los Osos)where $300.00 a month sewer is getting closer and gentrification is on the way if some have their way.
Like any good pinko-commie, I shall take the socialist BUS to this naughty Senator’s office, where we shall place this commie pinko socialist PETITION in his office, and then I shall take the socialist SUPERTRAIN to my corporatist workplace.
Yeah, I couldn’t click. Not into Kid Rock.
But, I couldn’t click anyway because my spouse is watching the new” Wire In The Blood”. It’s very dark. I’m kind of tired of being emotionally disturbed. And yet, I’m addicted to the “Oz” [Oswald Penitentiary] series right now.
ya forgot the hippie in your commie pinko :)
an honest days work unlike what our congresscritters do — they just sell themselves to the highest bidder — repeatedly
Yes, it’s spring in Ohio and the teabaggers are beginning to stir again. My mailman is ranting on about the damn gummint gonna take money for other people’s health care. He gets real mad when I say the post office is run by the gov’t. “Is not!” lol
two more phone screens by hiring managers. Today’s said she’d call me next week about coming to Portland to interview with her team. Still searching for other opportunities, but I’m feeling pretty good about chances.
Daffs pushing up under oak leaves that finally fell off trees in January! Spring please! We had a mother of all lightning and thunder storms last night that may have set a church on fire. What a storm!
hey ce — yikes! everyone around here is saying spring was 6 weeks early here. things were blooming in forking feb — but there is no such thing as climate change yanno (/s)
Hey, I’m totally the Spirit of Spring !! Got snap peas planted, lots of Walla Walla onion starts, a few early potatoes. And my Cornish Cross meat chicks are coming next week. Guess I’m going to find out if I can “walk the walk” on eating chicken.
What’s not to love here in the Pacific Northwest?!
i was checking the pots on the deck today — did some major cleaning up. my peony is about to bloom. the chives and lemon thyme survived the winter. been thinking of what the replacements are gonna be for those plants the freeze got.
the damn gummint gonna take money for other people’s health care.
Sounds like my old hometown take people’s money to help someone else Noooo!!!! Tell him its a GOP stealth play tell him McCain would have won the election if Truman gave people healthcare after all old White Men were McCain’s strongest demographic.
If Truman had given us healthcare enough White Males might be alive today to get McCain elected ask yourself this who benefits the most from Healthcare older people alive now or young Moms having kids who won’t vote for 18 years
Answer the GOP so do not expect them to repeal healthcare.
You can’t board any of the multitude of cruise ships that arrive in Hilo… Nor, for that matter ,any other Hawaiian port, except Honolulu…! Seriously…! If you wanted to cruise around the Isles, you have to fly to Oahu first…! ;-)
Spring is early. We live in Tulip country and the color is already on the buds. It’s going to be another disaster Tulip Festival when the tourists come out in mid April and the crops have already been beheaded to keep the colors pure. For bulb sales.

Yeah, I’m thinking I’m going to have another kick ass garden this year. We’re just finishing up the produce I stored from last year.
Which means the Tulip Tourists are going to be looking at dirt and green leaves if they go by the Festival schedule.
Oh,well.
They will fight but like abortion despite getting Reagan, Bush, and Bush 2 elected all running against abortion the GOP has never seal the deal.
Angry Frustrated GOPers go to the polls, not happy contented ones its amazing that after 20 years of GOP Presidents they still can’t get abortion outlawed.
Its even more amazing the GOP base has not caught on yet that they are being Played.
Remembering an adventure – brought to mind by Lisa’s moonshine thread:
Years ago, I was sent *for some sensible reason* to look at a piece of land in the hills. Was in an estate administered by a bank.
Trust officer drew a map and circled an intersection of two unpaved country roads. Said to stop in the intersection, walk around my car and then proceed folks like to see who is around. Just do it, you’ll be fine. I did. Trip was uneventful *g*
ohmystars. when i was a kid and we would visit the grandparents in ky, we would *always* be pointed to the small hollar down the road and told to stay outta there cause they ran moonshine and were not friendly.
i was sufficiently scared that i never did go down there
Whoa! I think spring storms are the worst because it’s so easy to think Winter’s Over just by the calender. It ain’t over ’til it’s over. If we get an April freeze, which happens, we’re going to lose alot of fruit.
Oh,yeah. Yuppies replacing hippies is what’s happening in our corner of the world. Old yuppies. Retired yuppies who never sacrificed salary to raise their families in a unique, beautiful yet island lifestyle. They bought investment properties cheap and returned to retire into a house that went from $60,000 to $985,000. So they’re smug, but they can’t sell in this market. The other new influence are the people who bought at $950,000 because they could.
Man, do THOSE people suck in terms of community tradition awareness.
I’ve had a couple of former colleagues pulling for me for this job – a principal engineer and the director of the corp research labs. Reading everything I can find on technology I’d be working with too.

File this one under “the final lame-ass excuse for not passing a public option.” Per Sam Stein at HuffPo:
[...]
“Democrats in the Senate are very unified that this is not going back to the House,” Sen. Wyden (D-Ore.) told the Huffington Post on Tuesday, minutes before the Coburn amendment was introduced.
Just how unified? If Republicans, in a bit of legislative trickery, offer an amendment to the Senate reconciliation bill that allows for the establishment of a public option for insurance coverage, Democrats — despite longing for the proposal for more than a year — won’t even take the bait.
In other words, after insisting that the House pass the Senate’s piece of shit bill on faith, the Senate now insists that they can’t trust the House to ratify the addition of a public option. And people report this White House bullshit with a straight face.
In other words, after insisting that the House pass the Senate’s piece of shit bill on faith, the Senate now insists that they can’t trust the House to ratify the addition of a public option. And people report this White House bullshit with a straight face.
I’m a mathematician and computer scientist. So software engineering… primarily high performance and supercomputing. This job is supporting some new parallelization software.
I’m good – keep trying to shut down the laptop and go to bed…but as you see, I haven’t yet.
No paying work this week, so I’ve been reading, and today following links to good literary/book sites and blogs.
So, I’m still up.
oh crap. i’m sorry about the no pay week — but my inner pollyanna is saying that on the positive side, we get to see ya here on the dark side of the lake.
I did just come back from changing into pj’s and washing my face….so all I have to do…is…click…Start…(windows, of course), then, shut down…then wait….and wait….
Well, I’m still here.
Yeah, Suze, when I have paying work I don’t get to stay up late. There are benefits to unemployment, and I’m not one to ignore them. *g*
Intel, perhaps? As the core count increases, such explorations have to go forward. They just announced a 6 core i7 with 12 threads. The people I worked with there said the average thread count that is currently handled is between 2 and 3. Of course, that was 9 months ago!
Funny about you being a mathematician, I am re-reading for the umpteenth time, Roger Penrose book, “Shadows of the Mind”
i used to keep one in the bathroom — the echoing off the tile is particularly irritating and helped break through the haze — and i had to get up and walk in their to turn the forker off. by then i was up so…. as long as i could resist crawling back into bed i was good.
It’s true – honest, my ex took it for awhile a couple of years ago: he’s very big on low-carb to no-carb eating, doesn’t keep cookies, crackers, etc., even bread in the house.
At least twice, he apparently drove (!!!) to the grocery store and bought packages of cookies and other junk food; woke up in the morning to empty or near empty packages on the kitchen counter, of food he didn’t have when he went to bed.
Scared him pretty good.
I dunno. I just like listening to the disclaimers accompanying the tv ads. i particularly love the one [I think it's Boniva or some anti-osteoporosis drug] that says one of the possible side effects is contracting tuberculosis. Really!!
i wish we could do away with big pharma being able to directly advertise. that money should be used for research instead. i wonder how much of my med costs are due to ad costs.
Pretty well, but I’m sure disgusted with the reporting on the healthcare stuff. People still believe that Obama and the healthcare-industrial complex are on opposite sides, and that Jane and the Teabaggers are on the same side.
IMHO, Jane deserves a Pulitzer prize for her reporting on this fiasco. She nailed exactly what was going on back in August, and even after the NYT confirmed it last week, nobody in the MSM gets it. Well, almost nobody; the video of Joe Scarborough and Chris Hayes embedded here is very refreshing.
Y’know, right now they’re both (2 alarms on each clock) plugged-in—it’s hard to find a regular old-fashioned wind-up or even battery-powered one these days.
I had one a couple years ago, but, ummm, somehow, it got broken…..and I couldn’t find another one at the time.
But, we actually did believe Patrick Kennedy – at least, we’re willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. It is possible. Poor Patrik, nobody else did.
Obfuscation by politicos is the rule. So empty promises are the bait. Reconcilliation that all the Obama supporters are touting to get public option and remove mandates by IRS enforcement is still AWOL.
I’ve got so much on my mind that I’m trying to put the world and its problems aside, although it can’t be ignored completely. This HCR bill is a fiasco, imho.
I don’t know what else to say, but I’ve got other stuff to look forward to, thank god.
Hipparchia, if you’re listening, I can’t say that I like the way that you caused a legitimate post of mine to be closed the way you did, though. I have seen what German Shepards can do, and it’s not as horrific as the damage that pitbulls can do.
Hipparchia, if you’re listening, you’re a bigger A-hole than the late Louise Day Hicks (remember her, anyone?) and all her supporters down in Southie and Charlestown who rioted against mandatory school busing in the mid-1970′s. Glad I had the opportunity to tell you what I thought of you.
Perhaps… I’m refraining from stating company names until I’ve got an offer, don’t want to tip off others looking for similar work. :-)
And yes as core counts go up parallelization needs to be made easier. MPP style parallelization is fine for people working on bleeding edge Grand Challenge kind of problems. For most developers of serially executed code it isn’t an easy switch. OpenMP also requires learning more about data parallelism and some difficult syntax.
Historically massively parallel machines have been used for big engineering problems – how a car will crumple on impact, how a nuclear warhead will function as materials age, how air flows over an air plane or car, how a protein molecule will fold, how shockwaves travel in an oil reservoir, etc.
Simulating the physics of these requires numerical solution of pdes at on the order of a million points, passing results from one time step to update surrounding points, then iterating. Literally quadrillions of calculations are required… or more.
As Starbuck said, multi core cpus are the current wave of increasing performance. So the techniques used for these bleeding edge problems will be needed to get some of the performance new generation processors offer.
Laura Love’s manager here. You want Freak Flag on YouTube? Let me look around, I might have a clip. If I find one I’ll post it on my channel, along with other LL clips: http://www.youtube.com/marymcfaul. Thanks for the request.
Suz, more news on job front – 4 hours of face to face scheduled for a week from Thursday. Manager will be in bay area so I won’t have 4 hours of travel beforehand.
I suspect I’ll be having face to face on the other phone screen in the next week as well.

Our ornamental NanKing cherry was just budding. She’s getting socked, and probably won’t have a whole lot of bloom. :(
No snow, but, it does sound brisk… Tonite’s forecast…
Did they check to see if Bobby Ewing was in the shower?

What’s not to love here in the Pacific Northwest?!
Good lard, there used to be this most fabulous gay bar in that neighborhood in the ’80s called “The Family Zoo.” Haven’t thought of it in years.
Hey wmd1961, is the Virginia Cafe still operating downtown on/around Stark Street? I used to LOVE that place.
i was checking the pots on the deck today — did some major cleaning up. my peony is about to bloom. the chives and lemon thyme survived the winter. been thinking of what the replacements are gonna be for those plants the freeze got.
Well! Spring was here last week, and it was wonderful. I pitched the down coat to storage, and froze my ass off this morning. Ever hopeful, Chris

thanks.
I don’t know. I was in PDX in ’96-’97, have only visited since. I do remember enjoying good beer and movies at the Baghdad.
Adios you charming folks. Must go – have a good night!
Spring is early. We live in Tulip country and the color is already on the buds. It’s going to be another disaster Tulip Festival when the tourists come out in mid April and the crops have already been beheaded to keep the colors pure. For bulb sales.
Glad I don’t really give a shit about tourists.
It’s nice.
My husband’s on the Mainland, so it’s kinda lonesome: just me & the four dogs.
OMG, tonight’s The Daily Show is a repeat of Jon Stewart’s imitation of Glen Beck that I think i saw last week. it is hysterical.

Netflix. It’s a twisted British series. Used to be that Blockbuster carried it but they’re tanking.
Hm, I never thought of it like that. But really, you think they’ll let it go without a fight? Never!
It’s possible our paths have crossed IRL then. I suspect I’ll be flying into Portland next week to try and land a job.
Hawthorne still a hip(pie) place in SE, but Belmont is more authentic, if you want that. Hawthorne has gone chi-chi.

At least twice, he apparently drove (!!!) to the grocery store and bought packages of cookies and other junk food; woke up in the morning to empty or near empty packages on the kitchen counter, of food he didn’t have when he went to bed.
Scared him pretty good.
I hope at least one is battery powered…! Ya just nevah know…! ;-)
I dunno. I just like listening to the disclaimers accompanying the tv ads. i particularly love the one [I think it's Boniva or some anti-osteoporosis drug] that says one of the possible side effects is contracting tuberculosis. Really!!
Oh, my stars, Suzanne – we must be related! I really must try that – I’ve set one in the living room at times, but never thought about the bathroom.
So glad to know I’m not the only person alive with so much trouble getting up.
I’m waiting to hear about the sex, fights and robberies.
OTOH, maybe those cookies were the product of a hold-up of a 7-11 .
There’s a town a few miles down the road called New Straitsville, the Moonshine Capital of the US during Prohibition.
i wish we could do away with big pharma being able to directly advertise. that money should be used for research instead. i wonder how much of my med costs are due to ad costs.
I need only one…my pee alarm. That gets me up!
G’nite all!
my first ex claimed it would take a big ole fire dept bell hanging over the bed blanging away to wake me up.
i do not like getting outta a warm bed on cold mornings either. hell, to be honest, i don’t like getting outta bed until i decide i wanna.
I know I really need to get myself one of these:

g’nite starbuck — this getting old crap sure does suck dood (laughing)
i wanted a george jetson system
We’ll never know. ; )
But, we actually did believe Patrick Kennedy – at least, we’re willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. It is possible. Poor Patrik, nobody else did.
jane is awesome. i don’t know how she does it but she is right on so many things way ahead of everyone else
Obfuscation by politicos is the rule. So empty promises are the bait. Reconcilliation that all the Obama supporters are touting to get public option and remove mandates by IRS enforcement is still AWOL.
You are truly a kindred soul, Suzanne.
And, looking at the clock, I see I’ve done it again, and I’d better toddle off to bed.
G’nite, everybody!
g’nite tejan
I agree and extend sympathy to Patrick as well.
It’s only 9pm here, but I’m off to bed.
if there are any East Coasters here — you’re insane.
g’nite mauimom
That song (Pale Blue Eyes) by Emmylou and Cheryl is beautiful.
For reasons I can’t explain, this, by Leon Jackson, reached out and grabbed me while I was waiting in line at a local Starbucks.
oh that’s grabbing hold of me too… he does a good job
I just found myself agreeing with Morning Joe? Ok I’m done Nite all:)
this is the misty blue i remember
even a broken clock is right twice a day things
g’nite
gracias
another emmylou/sheryl
Very nice. That sounds like the original version.
Misty Blue is incredibly durable music; I don’t think I’ve ever a bad version of it.
nite all…. maybe I am insane :-)
g’nite sunny
i’m thinking that’s the original but i could certainly be wrong. a good cover song can go back quite a ways…
ha — misty blue has its own wiki — was written for brenda lee but she turned it down
so close to 200 — but the thread is fading fast. wonder if we are gonna make it…
I don’t think it would be a very good song for Brenda Lee. Dorothy Moore, however, does a brilliant job with it.
I’m good for a few more minutes.
is it down to just us?
That’s how it’s looking.
bueller bueller bueller
Well, now it’s time for me to turn in.
G’nite, Suzanne and whoever else is still here.
congrats on snagging the 200 wigwam — and g’nite
guess i should head out myself.
g’nite all — thank you for letting me spend a wee bit of time with ya tonight
*turning lights down low*
Right on!
What song am I thinking of with “this could be the start of something good?” I did a search for an mp3 to buy and didn’t come up with the title.
Suz, more news on job front – 4 hours of face to face scheduled for a week from Thursday. Manager will be in bay area so I won’t have 4 hours of travel beforehand.
I suspect I’ll be having face to face on the other phone screen in the next week as well.
woohoo thank you funststuff!!!
i’m a big laura fan with a big ole smile now
thank you
fingers and toes crossed for ya dood — am sending ‘hire this one’ thoughts for ya
thanks for keeping me updated wmd
