ToonTime!
hey bb — how’s your bay?
Ooooo, wide-screen!
Hey Suz! Lots of hard stuff today on the Lake.
Nice book salon tho…
hey newton — how ya doing tonight?
open it up all the way and its great newton!
its been another pisser of a day for sure starbuck — how’s your side of the coast range?
Suzzitoons!
Bugs & Marvin?
I’m in heaven!
loohoo! how’s socal tonight?
bugs and marvin cartoons are among my absolute favorites
Warm, sunny day, about 63 or so.
I finished the day listening to the Dvorak Cello Concerto. It has a stunning end written as a tribute to a woman he loved who died while he was composing the work. It never fails to move me to a place of acceptance and beauty.
Best kind of finish to a hard day.
Marvin might be my favoritest character.
i only got up to 53 today — been grey and has been drizzling or raining since around 2pm. was 69 yesterday tho — a glorious day
Fogged in early. I was at the Girls surf contest in Cayucos which eventually got fogged in too despite patches of sun. I was good water for very nice surfing. Lots of families on the beach. I was the timer and sounded the air horn for each heat.
The cartoon was interestingly creative.
i would agree but then i start thinking of foghorn leghorn or sylvester or yosemite sam…..and those are just warner bros toons.
We had a lot of wind until about 4. I had to do a chore in the Gorge and could hardly stand up. Crown Point was closed because of it, although they had a wedding to open for!
I can just see it….
Great toon, Suz! I want one of those motorized skateboard thingies. So much cooler looking than a Segway.
i sometimes wonder what they put in the water over in their animation department :)
too bad about the fog fogging out the surf contest.
For me, it’s all about the helmet.
Which doubles as a push-broom.
I didn’t know you were doing the moderating today, Suz. Nice job with the Margaret fuckno spat. You were very gentle, something I really appreciate!
hey margot — how’s ohio tonight? i do think of the segways when i see this toon — wonder if it was the inspiration?
its been another pisser of a day
The rancor was heavy and consistent and dragging down the usual positive efforts on the lake. Did anyone else feel it as creepy?
Wonderful here. Got my garden planted today.
i gotta admit its getting to me — i try to be gentle unless i have to be otherwise. thank you
Huckleberry Hound, Betty Boop, and Yogi too.
Yeah, I did. Stayed with me after checking out for a while.
Sigh!
whatcha plant?
Restated…It was a good contest. And good surfing. I left at 5:30 got there to volunteer at 7:30. Long day but good karma.
You are welcome, Suz.
Just remember everyone:

now imagine all the stuff the moderators prevented ya from seeing and then think about how ya would feel dealing with that daily.
its getting forking hard to be my usually pollyanna self
All the good veges and watermelon. Tried my luck with asparagus and rhubarb for the first time. We’ll see, the asparagus takes a lot of work and three years!
Toon! Just like saturday afternoons in grade school!!
Seeing all the modified stuff? Was there a lot?
hey sunny — how ya doing tonight?
Moderators here must be really fast. On another forum, things got so seriously nasty there were death threats! And the moderators took sometimes a day to catch it! I couldn’t believe it. Just the legalities of it.
seeing all the stuff that was moderated before it was — or the stuff that was so horrible it could not be on the thread in any form….
there has been an uptick in racist, homophobic, demeaning and other nasty stuff — folks are pretty forking angry
Asparagus does take forever… Tough prep but worth it.
I have been wondering where the coyotes went lately. A neighbor told me today it they had left cause a mountain lion had moved in. There has been three sightings and eight missing kitties.
Great.
Hi yous guys!
Hey Suz. Interview three weeks ago ended up having company hiring freeze stop offer. Supposedly they will be hiring by summer.
Three screening interviews last week. There have been a lot more openings lately.
I hope it works. May be a little too warm here. Do you have asparagus? Where do you live?
Hope the people with kids are careful.
oh geez, frying pan into the fire
otherwise, how’s sac tonight mary mcc?
hey wmd — oh geez… i was hoping i hadn’t seen ya cause you were so busy working
how are ya tonight?
Sac is good. I think it may rain a little tomorrow. I laid up in the house most of the day. Spent a lot of time on the porch.
Just great. Everything is in bloom. Gorgeous warm day.
Went to the farmers market along with half the city it seems. Tons of plants and flowers….. camellias were stunning.
My favorite use of asparagus is in a risotto. I almost didn’t put it in first time because I just didn’t think it would work.
Asparagus with leeks…in a risotto!
Seem like a lot of recent folks are stirring the hornets nest purposely?
I’m doing OK.
Think I will be working before too long. May be up in PDX next week for f2f interviews.
Evening, Suz. Hi newton, Loo Hoo and all. Sorry you had such a hard day, Suz. Haven’t been visiting the lake during the day much, just popping in briefly now and again. It has been rough lately.
I’ve been getting a lot of cackleberries lately. 3 1/2 dozen a week or more. Had 10 of them one day this week. Making lots of quiche.
i love it in a frittata
If it’s that bad, do they get banned?
i hope so wmd — fingers and toes crossed for ya
Sure does. Get a little frustrating.
How are you bigbrother?
hey pastfed — how ya doing?
My home town!
Mary after the behavior of our Senate I have decided to drop your senator title maybe just use your name? Sounds like you are doing pretty well.
I’m just going to try for tomatoes, onions and peppers to start off with. And flowers.
I worked for a company based outside of PDX from ’95-’97. Spent a fair amount of time there. Great city – they still doing concerts at the zoo?
I’m thinking of making that risotto, refrig for a day or so then make the frittata. Mix in some eggs and cook it up.
Yes. Ron has been getting a lot of work lately. Apple just contacted him for potential illustration work. I finally got my cast off two days ago. We are also starting to sell amps, guitars and lapsteels with a friend. Things are happening.
Hey, I read the same thing’s happening in Santa Fe.
Yes and no. Not as you remember them. The zoo has markedly changed.
Who did you work for?
the anger has been pretty thick even in comments that aren’t moderated.
Great news!
the hard freeze during winter did not kill my chives or the lemon thyme. both are looking good and about ready for snipping. still waiting to see what else is gonna reemerge. i don’t think the small geraniums planted alongside them survived
woohoo snoopy happy dance for no cast
A consulting company called Axian. Founded by Floating Point Systems folks.
The big cats are around here as well, though not directly in the city (so far!).
g’evening Suze & Pups!
The news has been really getting to me. I’ve had to limit my online time so i don’t boil over. Suze, thank you for keeping LLN a spot of sanity in a crazy world.
Long day of voluteering ready for some serious Zs. Too much BS from too many directions. We are still fighting the $300.00 a month sewer. It is insane like fighting multiple battles in three dimension.
This time of the year the younger male lions are kicked out by the alpha doods. Some of them find their way to the greenbelt on the river. I have been walking back there with my dogs-two tasty treats on strings.
I worked for Tektronix, the company that spun off Floating Point. I knew the owner. Norm W.
Interesting that 1961 is the first year I spent here in PDX.
hey ndfg — how’s your garden tonight? i gotta admit, unless i’m working or hosting, i’m not in the comments much anymore just for that very reason.
i sure hope things calm down this week — although being double irish, i’m sure i just jinxed that :)
Totally. I can actually do things now. I still have on a splint for two weeks but I can take it off.
Awesome…must be good karma!
Cripes! Same here except it’s the water we are fighting for!
Thinking of you constantly. Go Suzanne! [and team]
Had to check out risotto. I’ll have to try that before three years from now!
and scratch where it itches :) i remember how wonderful it always felt after getting a cast off and being able to scratch. gotta be gentle tho since the skin is always tender at first.
Good luck, wmd.
hey ce — how ya doing tonight?
1961 is the year I was born. Tektronix makes fine test equipment!
The comments are so upsetting. I just can’t even read them to the end of the post. And now I see them on DK, laughing.
I used a chop stick to scratch with. Worked pretty good. I just had a cast up to my elbow. Not the kind that makes that right angle up the arm. That would itch.
Here Suz,
holding your hand.
Had to look that up too!
The trick is to continually stir the rice when cooking, although I found two recipes by well known Italian chefs that just add the liquid all at once, like a regular rice dish.
I like the idea of massaging in the stock.
Are you on the Delta Starbuck?
hard to find a chopstick long enough for a leg in a cast — i resorted to a frozen bag of peas to try to freeze the itch out
aw thanks hon.
Hey, congratulations to you and Ron!
Hey, Suzanne — quiet Saturday night, eh? *g*
My dad spilled o.j. down his arm cast. He said it smell awful after a bit. And sticky. Yuk.
Usenet threads used to get a lot worse. probably still do – talk.bizarre, talk.origins, alt.flame likely have a lot worse that anything that gets past mods here.
Hmmm…melted peas in a leg cast?
hey teddy — how’s the city tonight?
Thanks. We feel pretty good lately. The social security kicking in has helped relieve much of the anxiety. Funny how when we both were able to exhale we started getting work.
The delta?
My #2 son was born in 1961. And yes, Tek makes the best in test gear. I feel much pride in that fact because so much of what happened and happens in electronics would have been much more difficult without their oscilloscopes.
I like to think I helped it along.
the sticky makes it itch even more.
outside on the spot where it itches — i’ve always kept a bag in the freezer for emergency cold packs.
Dang. How are they trying to justify $300 for sewer?
congrats on snagging the 100 mary
And it is a really tiny community.
Hay! I wasn’t even trying.
Maybe I better check my lottery ticket.
Mary, I have never had to deal with a cast, but have been around others that did. The agony over simple things like scratching is too much to bear watching.
Get better soon!
Oh well, not even one number. Maybe next time!
You have a water fight. The Delta is being drained by farming. Where are you? I am not very techie though I had a cellular business in the 80-90s it was more marketing. The water is a coming battle and we have that one as well.
Congrats on your 100!
I’ve been here for years, and never have I experienced the vitriol as lately in the comments.
Was DiFi successful in transferring the water rights to a few millionaire farmer friends of hers?
Hi Chris, we had another pretty day. Think it’ll last?
I know. I’ve been reading the articles, but the comments are rough. I didn’t realize you were modding, Suz. Good on ya!
Years ago planted it in the deep south – nasty clay soil. Wasn’t a success, but may not have done enough prep. Only had a few sprigs every year.
Currently in a better growing area, but let the local farmers do it for me. Great berries and tomatoes out of the mountains and the peaches are incredible. Love the farmers markets.
My efforts are limited to potted herbs *g*
Gad! All that talk about itching! Now my back itches and I can hardly reach it!
Now if I can just reach it with this comb….
Oh Margot,
It was so sunny (but not so warm). We loved it!
i’ve been modding here since back in the trex days
I think you are confused – Starbuck is in Portland OR. The Willamette River has a confluence with the Columbia River in PDX, but I wouldn’t call it a delta.
I have been reading the comments and posts all week. Haven’t been commenting much. I finally had to stop today. There is a general feeling of unease and underlying anger. Some people are realizing how fucked we. Others are trying hard to maintain their denial by pumping up their anger.
I’m in SE Portland not far from the airport.
Farming locally is concentrated on Sauvie Island and along the Columbia, but that area has gradually been turned over to shopping centers, car dealers and the like.
As for the water fight, it is at least as horrifyingly unbelievable as this HC stuff. Forcing a billion dollar project to protect against a microorganism that does not exist in the source. 100 years of the best water in the country and now this.
folks are scared and frustrated and angry.
tis a bad combo
Yes.
I didn’t realize that the Civil War was the Great Yankee War of Aggression until just now.
I was wondering where that came from also, but the confluence might be seen as a delta. Sauvie Island is smack in the middle.
geez they really DO want us back in the 1850′s.
Internet commentary has a long history of people going too far. The anonymity makes people comfortable saying things they’d never say f2f. Moderation of some usenet newsgroup happened because of the tendency of flaming. It’s good that blog software allows for moderation.
FDL mods do a fine job.
Sometimes it is a good thing that it is all done remotely. There are several commenters that if you put them in a room together only one would come out.
HA! I have a back scratcher right here on my desk.
I’m giving this gardening thing another couple of years. I’m sure it’s costing more in water and fertilizer than I’d spend at the farmer’s market.
You must be the mod who says “gentle reminder”…
I had one but it broke scratching my back!
Oh, Loo Hoo,
That is what it is called in the south.
Google MWH (Montgomery Watson Harza) NOLA and City of Cape Coral FLA:
“The News-Press has requested thousands of public records from the City of Cape Coral and the construction managers for the controversial utility expansion project.”
Price gouging in New Orleans and Cape Coral FLA. In NOLA and official was indicted for taking a $100,000.00 payoff through his church. In Santa Cruz and Los Osos they are proposing big profit projects ala Freidman Chicago school of econ.
Almost $200 million sewer project for a town of 15k population. It started as a $33 million project!
They do a GREAT job.
i am one of several who uses that term
People of like mind keep upping the ante too. To where people stretch their own beliefs to the limit.
I have this one spot between my shoulder blades that I cannot reach. The other day I found that one of those nose hair trimmer thingies that sort of vibrate worked great to relieve the itch.
For the last 160 years? And I learn this tonight???
Who knows the Delta is in serious trouble. Wet season may be helping. Hope
Yep! That’s where mine is right now.
Dang! And no cast involved! I’m wiggling around in my chair, rubbing my back.
Lordy.
You have company!
i have a back buddy (old sock filled with either rice or beans with the end knotted) that i rub up against like a bear against a tree
Same outfit here also!
Went to PSU in 75 and UofO never thought of water shortage in the NW. If that is so we are in deeper trouble than I have read in recent water concerns. Snow pack of off Cascades melting early?
Sorry Darling,
Yes,
My brother (Yankee born but now a son of the south). Says, yes.
I can’t bear it!
They say after the snow melt the reservoirs will only be 45% capacity. The rain went straight to ground water for a long time cause the earth was so parched. But I think we are supposed to have another wet winter next year.
ha!
Got a link to news or agency? What is the beef?
I’ve got a long handled stainless spoon. With smooth edges. Works like a charm.
iirc the cascade snow pack is only 67% of normal — are they saying another el nino year?
I gots to go. I have been trying to get to bed earlier. Can’t eat if you are asleep and I am still dieting. Lost 15 lbs so far.
congrats and g’nite mary mcc
No shortage, just people wanting to make money off water.
We do have summertime shortfalls but not too bad. Our water comes from Bull Run on the slopes of Mt Hood, and is supplemented by water from wells along the Columbia. Those bother me as there is seepage at Hanford from reactor wastes showing up there.
I also gave up on Columbia River Salmon for that reason.
It helps to not take things personally. Doesn’t necessarily calm people down, but not getting defensive can make it easier to try to shed light on issues.
Bravo feeling lighter moods!
Man, i sure miss all those good old cartoon, bugs bunny, tom & jerry. Too bad nowaday cartoon is so shallow. I could not believe they are showing cartoon like Ben10, its so sad.
What is MWH doing in your area. They seem to have a pattern of costly infrastructure.
hey nicepuff — how ya doing tonight?
There was a wealth of excellent info put out on usenet in the early days. I miss it.
Go here and scroll down:
http://bojack.org/
Lots of links, and besides the water, a big angry fight with the bike crowd as well. The mayor has decided to do a big project for the bikers (20M to start!)) and put it on the water sewer bill.
That’s just openers!
Ever since Fort Sumner… War of Northern Aggression.
I use scissors, a hairbrush sometimes, to reach that same spot.
evening, firegods
The City is warm tonight, but quiet here.
Just changed the sheets, though, so you never know…
Night, Mary. Congrats on the weight loss. Maybe you should buy a lottery ticket!
LOL! I’ve used scissors as well to the horror of onlookers!
Suzanne, does this go in one “direction,” or is it hurled back and forth?
hey ppd — how’s the south south bay tonight?
FDL mods are heroes.
There’s a lot more info available now, and it is a bit more accessible. Usenet was a lot of anarchic fun though!
You wouldn’t believe it, Suz
love the feel of getting into bed with fresh sheets
especially line dried fresh sheets
Good evening your self, and I like firegods better than fire pups!
Humph!
hey mauimom — sometimes both. if folks take the bait it can get really ugly fast
how’s your island tonight?
I have to take a bath first.
why? snowing?
Mary, I know where your lost 15 lbs is! — right around my belly.
I kind of like firegods too. :)
Hi PPDCUS!
hey, Starbuck
My neighbor over the fence line dries her sheets, but I couldn’t stand the grit from our air, I don’t think.
Hi Margot …. and firegoddesses, too
I have to say the book salon is a model of civility, even fun! We can disagree without rancor.
teddy the air up here is so clear and clean — i was shocked when i was down for nahant’s meetup how dirty the sf bay area air is in comparison.
Nite sleep calls, hopefully wake to a sunny day.
g’nite bb
sheesh. make a comment, and immediately Youngest Daughter comes home from work! Just got done hearing about birthday party plans for one of her friends tomorrow night … Oldest Daughter is out with some of her friends at a house show. I tell ya, i’m really enjoying living in a multi-generational household. We’re all on such different schedules that it’s a treat for me to see them.
LLN is civil too.
Suzanne is in her tiny little spot on the coast that is quite good. Salt air, crashing surf, Chinese smog…no, forget that!
Yes we are. :-)
i’m headed over the range tomorrow to visit jen and mike in their brand new house — they just moved in last weekend.
I suppose you’re right.. But seems to me search engines, etc have discouraged some of the more interesting leaks and discussions.
Not to say that they haven’t also enhanced the reliability of what’s out there. Something about accountability *g*
Finally clear [lots of stars out -- I live in the country, so there's no light around] and kind of cool.
had a starry starry night last night but tonight is all cloud cover and no stars. but it is 50 outside right now — beats the 30′s this time last night
While pulling weeds today [always a good time for thinking], it occurred to me that “Netroots Nation” ought to be quite interesting this year — if any Pups go.
Hey, if you have time stop by, if close.
Rain supposed to start here after midnight and still dry. Is it wet there, Suz?
80% of SF’s pollution comes from China, a horrific prospect.
And now, I am to bed.
Bug day tomorrow, as Thers charmingly mistyped earlier this evening….
g’nite teddy
I remember being on a Yahoo political chat board right around the last year of the Clinton presidency. Talk about vitriol.
But that was a refuge from teh Christian chat room I had gone to first. Those people were all about the fighting, just awful.
Congrats on the 200!
And have a wonderful trip tomorrow, Suzanne, drive carefully please
Crossed my mind too.
won’t have time — have to cut the visit short so that i am back in time for my shift here tomorrow evening. not raining but damp — have had rain/mist/drizzle off and on since around 2pm
exciting! We’re still in the unpacking stage … one of the drawbacks to moving.
congrats on the 200 starbuck
tis my plan dear :)
So I did! Thanks!
i told her — when i heard the silent gasp when i told her i wantd to come out — that i gave her a week
Thanks, Suz.
I bet. I couldn’t believe the stars in Costa Rica. Seemed like ten times as many as I see her in rural SoCal, and felt like you could reach out and touch them.
I think 200 is a milestone for me. I generally fade out before then.
I’m going. I’m hoping Jane and Marcy will be there. (And Teddy and Newt!)
Suzanne, you’ve got to pick a different “secret number” [as opposed to those well-known 100 & 200], so there’s an additional chance to be a “winner.”
Years ago, we camped out in the depths of Nebraska, away from any lights and the response was the same.
SE Oregon desert has this phenomenon as well.
707! Each time i talk to my mom she wants to know what we’ve gotten done (we bought a cosmetic fixer-upper)
Hey! I like 200!
i’m just happy i’m not hitting the # for a change
first time i ever saw a montana sky at night i was gobsmacked
For that, I might come.
But I was just thinking that the “others” might be piling on Jane and the Pups, and crowing about their great [Orange] “victory.”
And that if Marcos was organizing, he’d invite Rahm as a guest.
brand spanking new 2 story craftsman kinda looking 4 bed house. i’m so happy for her
Congratulations!
I would give anything to see you there. I don’t think I can go.
good night all, time for me to sleep.
Well, passed the magic number of 200, but coming up on the magic number of midnight, so I’ll slink off to bed folks. I really enjoyed this evening, and coupled up with the salon, I guess today was ok after all.
Have a safe trip Suz!
i’ve never been and this will be yet another year of keeping that streak going.
Good idea! Suz, think about it!
g’nite wmd — fingers and toes crossed dood
loohoo — you are the one who started the 100/200 congrats
Well, I was wondering if the hard feelings would last too, but I sure hope not. We have a lot more in common than not. Plus, they’ve always been there before, it would be a shame if the rift lasted that long. I’ll put my money on FDL being there in a leadership role.
Or heck, Suzanne, you don’t even have to really pick a number. You could just randomly declare a “winner.”
We pups are just always looking for additional “rewards.”
Darn it! That would make three years. Admit that Vegas in July isn’t exactly the ticket, but it’s all right in the center of crazy action!
well there is that….. hmmmmm tonight’s # is 372???
After midnight.
G’nite all.
Dude… breakfast with Loo Hoo, in Vegas – worth the trip.
That was great!
g’nite starbuck
Margot, don’t think I ever did chat rooms.. Never posted on usenet, except for rec.food.cooking. Even there, thick skin was good *g*
I know, and it’s another silly but fun thing. It would be fun if you picked the lucky number for the night and then someone got the honors. Added spice. Course you probably have enough going on with out remembering #83 or whatever.
No, no, no. You can’t tell the number in advance, sillyness!
Well, you say breakfast, I say cocktail hour!
You are trouble. So am I.
oh crap…. well hells bells how am i ever gonna get a thread with that many comments?
Hey, you ran up a 600-plus, didn’t you?
the night we live blogged in the comments the senate ‘bring in the cots’ thingie we had around 1,400 comments all told iirc. i was putting up a new thread every couple hundred and think we ended up with 7 or 8 posts that night
You’re right. The 367 would be better.
You just never know. Sometimes everyone beats it early, sometimes everyone wants to chat.
thanks suz. nite pups.
yup — i just never know what is gonna be the result
g’nite sunny
Nite Sunny
guess its about that time for me — gotta get up before the crack of noon tomorrow so i guess i better head out
g’nite all and thank you for letting me spend a wee bit of time with you tonight.
Pleasant dreams, Sunny.
good night gracious hostess
Nite, newt. Me too…out!
i should split also. i will probably find myself back here on the morrow, would not want to disappoint.
nite loo hoo
nite you guys
It was a sign of the times day.
Every Saturday morning, there’s a group of peace protestors waving signs at the same intersection. Usually, it’s a small group. Today they were out in force with maybe 25 – 30 people all stirred up in support the big ObamaRahma OFA push to pass HCR.
Across the street on the other corner were tea partiers waving KILL THE BILL signs, dressed up like Bunker Hill minutemen.
Poor fools waving signs on either side of Main Street, doing corporate insurance, Pharma & Wall Street’s bidding against their own families’ interest.
Does anyone know how many votes it’ll take to pass this HCR bill in the House. There are 435 seats in the House, and I know that Massa’s seat is not occupied. So I guess that my questions are
* How many seats are currently not occupied?
* What happens in the case of a tie?
IIRC, the number that I’ve is that Pelosi needs 216 to win, which would be “more than half” of 431 but not of 432.
The reason I ask is that Jane’s last article shows 432 in total: 204 “yes”, 209 “no”, nine undecided, and ten in the Stupak block. That would imply the need for 217 votes to have “more than half.”
Hmmmmm.
Oops! I miscounted. There are only eight “undecided,” with another ten in the “Stupak block.”
So, to reach her necessary 216, Pelosi needs 12 more. So she needs to get at least four of Stupak’s ten.
