From The Great Gatsby:
“Civilization’s going to pieces,” broke out Tom violently. “I’ve gotten to be a terrible pessimist about things. Have you read “The Rise of the Colored Empires’ by this man Goddard?”
“Why no,” I answered, rather surprised by his tone.”
“Well, it’s a fine book, and everybody ought to read it. The idea is if we don’t look out the white race will be—will be utterly submerged. It’s all scientific stuff; it’s been proved.”
And here’s Mark Steyn, approvingly quoting L. Paul Bremer.
It is a fact of history that Europe is based on Judeo-Christian values. But Europe seems unwilling, or perhaps afraid, to acknowledge this reality…
European countries have a large, and in most places, growing Muslim population. [...] Europe also faces a demographic time bomb. The population of every major European country is falling. This will place unsustainable burdens on the elaborate and expensive welfare programs built up over the decades. As the Muslim populations grow in proportion to overall populations, it is vital that Europe find a way to integrate peaceful Muslims while defeating extremists.
Uh-huh. So let me get this straight.
The man who was the Bush administration’s viceroy in Iraq, the guy who was handpicked to wield complete dictatorial control over one of the largest Muslim countries in the world after the United States bombed, invaded, conquered and occupied it, the guy who then promptly reduced the place to a nightmarish, zombies-walking-the-streets hellhole — turns out to be a Tom Buchnanesque asshole who frets publicly about the Great Brown Hordes irrevocably staining the lily-white tapestry of Europe.
Pretty easy to see why it all went so well over there, isn’t it?

BT in the evening! A pleasant surprise.

Oh, goody, another racist pig with influence.
Ah, yes, the CPA, where being an Evangelical Christian Republican counted for far more than, say, knowing Arabic or having management skills.
another racist GOP pig with influence
I imagine his suggested solution is that all whites should breed like bunnies. Racist, indeed.
Obviously this is a Very Serious Person, and we should be greatly concerned with what he has to say.
In a pig’s eye.
Better yet, they’re setting up a two-fer to hate on teh gay an teh muslims, as yanno, it’s gay people’s fault for the Massacre in Srebrenica
Shorter Bremer: “Be afraid! The heathen XXX who can’t keep their dongs in their pants are going to take over!”
(MODNOTE: lets try to keep the racist terms to a minimum please)
That, and the Palin-American College Republicans he brought with him. As to his racism, it’s not a new tune, but it has been growing more and more prevalent. They’ve got their own website dedicated to it too. No, not Stormfront, it’s called Alternative Right. They like to think of themselves as high minded intellectuals, but really, just the same old shit.
Or having experience in the field for which you’re being hired.
‘High minded’ as in, they can see over the edge of the curb when they stand on tiptoe?
Here’s some more fun, I guess people who work at Fox News have been making Glenn Beck cry more than usual, so Roger Ailes told them to leave Glenn alone.
Pretty much, though they do remind me more of those 19th and early 20th century types who used pseudo-scientific bullshit to justify their bigotry, all the while sipping cocktails and lamenting the end of slavery.
Perhaps Bremer just needs to get back to that Viking Range he loves so much and make some Penne Arrabiata with some nice pan-roasted sea bass to go with a nice white wine and micro-green salad with fresh Vermont Goat Cheese.
The last thing we need is to hear that ass-hat pontificating about Islam and politics again.
And Bremer’s little buddy Mr Campbell Brown (Dan Senor) may just be the GOP’s best chance against Kirsten Gillibrand in NYS this fall. How exciting to see two Kissinger Associates alumni, two Bush2 alumni, Rob Portman and Dan Senor, running this fall. Barack Obama may get his wish for the midterms, at least in some states: run against Bush’s record of malfeasance and ill-accomplishment.
i always thought the gop’s longing for the 50′s was for the 1950′s — i now realize it is the 1850′s…
Sure it isn’t the 1650s?
1350s
This is exactly what lies behind the “colorblind”, “We should all be just Americans” rhetoric that conservatives pitch to blacks.
And it is what Colbert mocks with his “I don’t see race” idiocy.
Does anyone have an idea when that picture was taken? He looks like, oh, maybe a Sophomore….Really.
I am beginning to think that it is rather a good idea for some white doods not to procreate.
Bremer’s insanity was well known when Bush appointed him to the job, if you’ve seen “No End In Sight”.
Bremer is not just an Irak war criminal, he is a part of the financial arson meltdown. He was at “Marsh & Mclennan” a fraudster insurance company. Another Goldman Sachs fraudster, from M&M, Stephen Friedman was promoted to be chairman of the Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board. It is a small neo-con world that rules us.
L. Paul Bremer. In an Administration populated wall to wall by incompetents, boobs, and war criminals, he still manages to stand out. Who can forget his epic bad calls, ignorance of the country, complete ineffectiveness, or how he had to sneak out of the country when his tenure as head of the Provisional Authority ended? But I don’t see his views as surprising. I mean the whole Iraq operation was essentially to slap around the brown people and steal their oil. All this shows is that he hasn’t changed, but then I never expected him to.
Paging Mr. Bremer, Abu Ghraib is on line one
Apparently L. Paul is looking to add a Tea Party Medal of Freedom from Race Submersion to his showcase.
Doin’ a great job there, Bremy.
Steyn’s EuroHistory fallacy is really quite stunning to me, in the sense that he’s picked out some point in time to make Europe Judeo-Christian based.
It’s really not when you look at the whole history of the Continent over time, even as only recently back to Julius Caesar’s time; “Gallia est in partes tres.”
While contemporary Europe may be dominated by certain cultural forces, it has a secular and multi-cultural rhythm that renders the Steynian thought meaningless. Just my opinion.
This more than anything else defines and unites the Conservatives. Paul Bremer is iconic. There is nothing that panics a Conservative white man more than the dark skinned around him.
I am intrigued as to why it is such a southern thing. We all know the slave holding history etc. But you know some of the New Englanders even initially had slaves, though they never institutionally treated them as badly as they came to be in the south.
I think there is something more about the culture of the south from the very beginning. Two threads seem to intertwine, one being that the landowners came for wealth and the mountain folk seem to have brought and retained what I would call a lot of clanishness and tribalism. Then there is the Buckley Catholics longing for Christendom.
Mod: Sure, no problem, though to be honest I think that the racism in what Bremer was saying would be better expressed with the vulgar language that matches his vulgar thought. He’s an ugly man. Ugly words fit him.
Hiya firepups!
You think this guy would prefer to have white Muslims and brown Christians? Or would he just be completely confused.
He is completely confused right now.
Paul is just riffing on the White Man’s Burden.
Really confused….I was expecting him to break out with “We shall Overcome”; so hard to be white and always privileged.
Have you read “The Rise of the Colored Empires’ by this man Goddard?”
The book Tom was actually referring to in “The Great Gatsby” was by a man named Stoddard, and Tom got the title wrong too. It’s characteristic of wingers not to read their own sources.

I’ve got your Gordian Not! right here
Subjugating conquered people to steal their resources is the hallmark of modern Pox Americana.
Holy crapoly, what a berk!
Particularly blonds.
Touche’!
Large areas of Europe didn’t become Christian until substantially later. Constantine did not convert until 312. Even then it kind of depended, Clovis king of the Franks became a Catholic (not an Arian Christian) before his death in 511. I doubt that pagan customs went away for centuries. Indeed under Charlemagne (800) Alcuin was brought in from Britain because the level of church Latin and just the church generally was so low. If you read the 12th century Chansons de geste or El Cantar de mio Cid, what Christianity there was was grafted on to a pre-Christian Germanic warrior culture.
And of course in the 13th century we had Alfonso El Sabio in Spain. There was already a fair amount of discrimination by this time against both Moslems and Jews but if you look at the artwork accompanying his Cantigas you will see Crosses, Crescents, and Stars of David on shields on both sides. Alfonso also set up the work shops where Arab and Jewish scholars translated the classic texts of Greece and their Arabic commentators into Latin, a major conduit of learning into Europe. Bremer has the view he does of history because he simply ignores or does not know most of it.

Europe is a patchwork.
I fail to see how this man was put in charge of anything.
Country Club Extreme! Can’t trust the riff-raff! Gotta keep them in their place! And , of course, we know what is best for you! (Especially if we are robbing you blind)
Yep. The simplest way to say these sort of things is Al-Gebra and Al-Kuhul, you know, algebra and alcohol, enshrined in even English.
Those damn Arabs! Trying to make us cipher and cocktails and such!
Don’t tell L. Paul that the original religions of North America are still alive. I have been to many Hopi ceremonies that would freak him out.
Bremer is not a Southerner. He’s a Yankee. As Yankee as they come.
“Born in Hartford, Connecticut, Bremer was educated at New Canaan Country School, Kent School and Phillips Academy. Bremer’s father was president of the Christian Dior Perfumes Corporation in New York. His mother was a lecturer in art history at the University of Bridgeport. Bremer graduated from Yale University in 1963 and went on to earn an MBA from Harvard University in 1966. He later continued his education at the Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris, where he earned a Certificate of Political Studies (CEP).”
For that matter, Tom Buchanan was also a Northerner who attended Yale.
I think the only stupider individual than L. Paul Bremer, is his co-conspirator, Dougie Feith… *gah*
Can I get a vote for 850s?
I haven’t thought about that S.O.B in a long time. Putrid comes to mind.
Eastern Europe wasn’t converted to Christianity (of whatever form) until later; some parts actually not until much later, like the 12th or 13th century. Charlemagne was only kinda-Christian, given that he had several mistresses and at least one wife, possibly simultaneously. (Documentation is a bit scarce for that period, and a lot of it is, um, about as unbiased as Faux.)
Hell, the Normans were only nominally Christian, even in the 10th century, and I wouldn’t want to bet that the English were much better.
Alkaloids. And algorithms. And alchemy.
*heh* SIGIR’s Stuart Bowen minces no words about Bremer’s nor Feith’s performance during reconstruction…! ;-)
Yes, it’s quite different than what people think.
St. John Chrysostomou is the dude who brought the cyrillic alphabet to the Slavic speakers, and not even all the Slavs adopted that alphabet. Polish and Romanian speakers come immediately to mind
There’s a store I go past occasionally: it has signs in English, Russian, and Armenian. Three different alphabets. And Russian is the most recent of the three.
DIARY WHORE ALERT:
BTW, just saying if you donated to Dennis Kucinich and have money coming back, I have a suggestion for you…
Bremer’s commercial quality stainless appliances may be lined with bullion.
In that pic he resembles cousin shrub, around the eyes and ears.
Speaking of Beck, Jon Stewart did another incredible parody of him on today’s show. Don’t miss it.
Sent you a message at your diary. I just plain disagree.
Here is the entire question and response. He said nothing racist at all:
2. It has become almost a cliche to speak of a Europe at the crossroads. On the one hand, some like Pope Benedict argue that Europeans have forgotten their heritage—Western Civilization , Christianity, etc. On the other, some like the late Samuel Huntington speak of Europe as a continent on the fault-lines of a great clash of civilizations between Islam and the West. As the former ambassador to the Netherlands, a country that has certainly been in the news in recent years with respect to its large Muslim population and the associated culture clash, and as a counterterrorism expert with a great deal of experience with radical Islam, what are your views on Europe today? What are the ramifications for the trans-Atlantic alliance?
Both the Pope and Huntington are correct. It is a fact of history that Europe is based on Judeo-Christian values. But Europe seems unwilling, or perhaps afraid, to acknowledge this reality. European bureaucrats omitted any reference to it in their draft “constitution,” reflecting a willful disregard for the continent’s intellectual, moral and spiritual roots.
Meanwhile, many Europeans are proud that they are evolving into a “post-sovereignty world,” one in which the nation state disappears and citizens are called upon to shift their allegiance to the ephemeral “Union.” Not surprisingly, almost all European nations have substantially reduced defense spending. If you don’t know what you stand for, you cannot easily figure out how to defend it.
European countries have a large, and in most places, growing Muslim population. The vast majority of these men and women are not terrorists. But as events have shown, there are among them extremists who reject everything the West and Europe stand for—the separation of Church and State, universal suffrage, women’s education, free trade unions, a free press. And especially democracy which the extremists such as Al Qaeda define as “a new religion that must be destroyed by war.”
Europe also faces a demographic time bomb. The population of every major European country is falling. This will place unsustainable burdens on the elaborate and expensive welfare programs built up over the decades. As the Muslim populations grow in proportion to overall populations, it is vital that Europe find a way to integrate peaceful Muslims while defeating extremists.
For all of these reasons, the Atlantic Alliance, so long the keystone to American and Western security, will find itself under significant strain in the years ahead.
OK – but I’m not sure we actually disagree.
I’m just saying Dennis is sending back the money, and I think that it should be re-directed to FDL OpEx (Operating Expenses.) That’s all I’m saying.
If you do disagree, I respect that.
donated 100.00, I expect the world to change. PFFT..
I cheerily undo your do-nothingness!
George Bush is from Connecticut.
Money always seems to disappear around “those” people too.Unaccountably. No one is interested in making “those” people accountable. Unlike say Acorn.Goes with the fascist meme.
Sometimes it is hard, even with prolonged practice and experience, to sound the depths of stupidity of our (self) chosen leaders. I assume Bremer went to Yale. Seems like something he would have picked up as confused signal while half asleep in his World Civ course. What passes for thinking in his circles wouldn’t fit in an ant’s asshole.
Yes it would.
A conservative say something racist…who would of thunk it.
Sorry but this post is an example of lazy racialist thinking that is so common on the left in America. Outside of the Judea-Christian comment (what about Greco-Roman Classical, Renaissance, Enlightenment, Modern, etc.?) there is nothing wrong with what Brenner said.
In fact, Western Europe’s welfare states are indeed the result of the historic cultural cohesion of the different European working classes which allowed them to work together to gain power against their elites instead of being divided and fighting each other as happened due to racism in America. But now there is a potential cultural cohesion problem in Europe with large numbers of immigrants arriving with different cultural ideas, ideas about, for example, the equality of women. Many on the class-based Left here (as opposed to the race-based Left in America) would say that this is exactly why elites in Europe are so eager to have Muslims immigrants, the first big wave of Algerian immigration after the war in the 60’s was a result of large French automotive companies attempting to break up the powerful French unions.
As for the idea that all this is racially based and not cultural, in other words Brenner and Europeans just hate these brown people, the fact is there is little to no racial difference between most North Africans and southern Europeans; they come from the same racial stock. There are many blue-eyed, fair haired people among the recent Muslim immigrant to Europe. The problems are not racial; the problems, where they exist are cultural.
Another example that shows the issues are not racial is is that besides Muslim immigration, there are many immigrants coming to Europe from South America. But in this case, although racially these immigrants are again quite similar to North Africans and southern Europeans, there are little to no problems in integrating due to the strong cultural similarities between South Americans and Europeans.
And you might notice that people of black African descent tend to do well in Europe. Paradoxically, because they integrate so well and intermarry, until quite recently there has not been much of an African-European culture. And that which is springing up is really just an imitation of African-American culture.
So Europe does have to be careful to assimilate immigrants, whatever their race, in order to maintain the cultural cohesion necessary to have the strong welfare states we all enjoy here. I do not want to lose my five weeks vacation, universal health care coverage, excellent and free preschools, great public schools, free universities and pensions because of cultural strife caused by bringing in immigrants who are not willing or able to assimilate. And no amount of racial shaming from Americans will make Europeans change their minds. I highly recommend, that unless their is a clear racial component to an issue, that people engage their critical thinking facilities and use the framework of class instead of leaping into the comfortable superiority of racialist thinking.
I wasn’t intending to suggest Bremer as being southern, only that his way of looking at things is so prevalent in southern history and currently. But your and others’ points are well taken, Gatbsy was written at a time when eugencis imported from the Brits was taking hold of many of our intellectual elites all over.
This assumes the light skinned will be able to continue to control the wealth and deprive Muslims from succeeding, thus becoming a “burden” on the welfare safety nets. Just like those “lazy black folks” in this county stress our welfare safety nets.
Disgusting.
I agree that racist thinking is much less common on the European Continent. I would disagree in regards to the ancestral lands of our first immigrants, the British Isles. The conservative movement in this country today relies heavily on the racist world views of the Southern US. via Buckley and the economics via Himmelfarb and the Neo cons’ Dickensian Engalnd.,
