What’s on your mind tonight?
Update: R.I.P. Alex Chilton
Hey Eureka!
Aloha, ES and LLN Brethren…!
Evening egregious..)
Can’t quit singing Alex Chilton’s Volare’ this evening.
Evening CT
Wild! I was also “reborn while eating a scallion” !!!
Alex Chilton
Great with scorched dandelion..)
Hi LL!
Hey hey ES!
Good Evening, ES, my friend. Great to see you tonight.
evening, firegods
*waving to demi*
Evening Demi, PPDCUS.
What a day!
Hey, Girl!
Not one youtube of Alex Chilton singing his own song – Volare’. How odd.
Wowzers. Just when I think I’m not thin skinned, when I think I’ve gotten beyond getting sucked in….shutting my trap now. *g*
Hi All!
PPDCUS, I was thinking of you today.
Hello, all.
It’s only 7:15 “my” time, a rather early arrival for moi.
Hi, lateniters. What’s on my mind? My failed attempt to call out (spit) Karl Rove this afternoon.
He did a
readngsigning – no speaking, no reading – at my nearby Borders.Confirming my opinion that the man is a coward, I was forced to leave the music section beyond where the signing was being set up for “security” reasons. I felt for the poor young woman assigned to chase me out (a respectable old woman in a green scarf and heels), but insisted on talking to a manager and registering my protest. Futile, I know. I pointed out how much money I spend there, and that they would be forgoing a sale by making me leave. Coompletely futile – if I had bought every CD in the place (not so many anymore) it wouldn’t have matched what they made in books sold.
That was what was most depressing – how many fools were lined up, with purchased books and armbands (armbands!)to get the signature of an evil man. An evil man who couldn’t even risk the possibility that someone might call him out on his evil actions.
There. Possibly the most futile political things I’ve ever done, but when I realized it was nearly time for his appearance, I felt compelled to go down and try to do something. Silly me, I was trying to formulate questions on my way. Should’ve known I wouldn’t get near him. And nothing on earth would compel to pay money for his self-serving piece of published lies.
There, again. Guess I just needed to rant. Thank you very much for tolerating it.
hi LL, Demi, PPDCUS, ES, everyone!
Hi ya. Mar got what? Hugs? Here’s one….
(((Margot)))
hiya Margot! and hi PPD, Kelly, and any other pup :-)
Feet on ground, with feeling and intention, so totally counts in my book. The barriers are there for a reason, but just getting to them is huge.
(((tejanarusa!)))
ES, I’m just gobsmacked at the loss of Alex Chilton. Right now I’ve got nothing but Box Tops and Big Star tunes running through my head.
*lovesdemifornoparticularreason*
Well it’s great you tried. I almost drove to LR last year when the University of Little Rock invited him to speak.
I couldn’t believe his appearance went by without a protest. (that I know about)
Hey Margot..)
You did your part, I’m sure it was noticed.
A few years ago there was a cardboard stand-up poster thing of Bush, but not one of Kerry, in the FYE cd shop at the mall. I made sure the clerks knew I didn’t like Bush and I wanted to see Kerry there. They said “a lot of old ladies have been coming over and spitting on Bush.” Hah, that was good to hear.
((( tejanarusa ))) Thank you for doing what you did!
oh thanks demi, I really needed that, ((demi)) back !
He’s from Memphis, I grew up less than two hours away from him… had to move to California to discover and see him.
Sure glad I did. We played Big Star constantly in a store I worked for on Haight Street. Great times.
Oh I bet those times were great :-) Here’s some Big Star to go along with those memories.
Wow !!! Fucking cool. Thank you, thank you.
Imho, the armbands are the paid “local job growth” positions. Too bad we can’t give them medical pot cookies and a hug. Kind of like,”Good on ya, you got a paying gig. You know it’s just pretend, right? Like playing a pirate at Disneyland, only different. But not by much.”.
I was wondering if, had you bought a book, would the sale over come the principles behind badgering you? Cause I’d have chipped in for the purchase!!!!! And autograph. Wonder of he sprays his hands so he doesn’t leave any DNA………………
Hi Margot, Hey ES, Hey Kelly
A quick Bless Ya Alex, My Baby Sent Me A Letter.
Hope I get to pick some with you when I get to join the Camp Jam In The Sky.
Loved your work while you were here.
RIP, hoss.
(and thanks ES, I didn’t know, went to La Figa, paid respects)
Ok, onto the vids and comments.
Okay, all this love is making me fat and tired. I just had to show up to make sure we’re all okay. And, now that I know it, I’m going to go to bed to read, ’cause I was too upset this afternoon for my little before work nappy.
Tears and laughter remind us we’re still alive, breathing, hearts beating, still caring and sharing.
And, making and listening to fabulous music.
Night all.
‘night demi, and the sweetest and most peaceful of dreams to you hon.
PS….(((Eureka Springs Eternal)))
BlueZOOm just sent me this.
http://www.stumbleupon.com/su/1CixHw/www.dontkillgrandma.com/
Niters demi.. rest well.
Hey es, pups!
….. and special hug for (demi)
Thanks, Kelly. I appreciate that.
and, (((((Kelly))))) back at’cha (I skimmed some earlier threads)
Mostly spent the evening reading food blogs, though. Sweet respite, y’know. ; )
Thinking about the Constitution, Kelly?
hey Sunny!
Hi Sunny
Hiya All Firedogs!
What a day, indeed. Between work and life, I am exhausted. And it was warm today!
I heard him on PBS today. Even the interviewer couldn’t stand him.
Well, rats, demi’s gone before I could ask about her horrible day – or do you think it was just the same reason we all feel horrible? Did something extra happen to demi that I missed earlier?
Hey LL! Gotta ask, kitty pix?
Wanna play that Mozart flute concerto sometime? Or maybe some of that Jethro Tull Bach Bouree thing?
Humming Keep On The Sunny Side, always on the sunny side….
Really going now. It’s my M.O., ya know. *g*
Wow.
Sorry you were outed before you could face to face him.
Me?
“Hi Karl. Fuck You You Fucking Fuck For All You NeoCons Have Fucked Us All. Yer lucky there’s security.”
Course, I tend to fantasize a lot, also . . . too. ;-)
Bless ya Te!!!!
Terry Gross’s interview with KR was on while I drove to the store – kept turning it on and off. Switched finally to the jazz station to calm down.
A wee bit. Was thinking about Justice. A Lot.
What, the lead sanger for the Box Tops wrote Volare, that was done by everyone in the 60′s?
I never knew . . . .
I can do that humming and blowing at the same time he does. I can multi-task.
No. Really. Now. Ha!
There’s a new one on my cell phone, haven’t transferred it yet — but it’s really cute *g* Caught her just waking up from a nap, upside down with paws in the air ;-)
((((demi!))))) You’re still here!
Hey CE, Enjoy it while you can.. I had to build a fire this afternoon… and the forsythia is trying to bloom.
A conservative judge gives six GOOD reasons why drugs should be legalized. Best reasons I’ve heard yet.
Hey ES, you asked me to let you know about the new Jimi Hendrix album — imo, go ahead and buy it. There’s an instrumental version of “Sunshine Of Your Love” that is outtasight :-)
I didn’t know until I heard him say so just before he sang it as an encore… opening up for Robyn Hitchcock at the Great American Music Hall.
ANd yes, I thought it was really odd that Chilton was the opening act.
hiya CE! Springtime is trying to reach us here in greater Dee Cee…and I’m so happy about that.
Which thread did I miss that was so emotional?
Great to hear… i’ve thought about it several times.
$$$$
I smelled fires in the neighborhood coming out of a local Thai restaurant, and it is light here until almost 8:30! No forsythia yet, but the daffs are pushing up like mighty men!
As an aside, I believe another one of the topics, or terms, struck from the Texas Social Studies Standard voted on last week by the notorious State Education Board was …. yup, justice.
Can’t recall the exact context without searching – there were so many jaw-dropping outrageous “decisions” (e.g., Oscar Romero’s not famous enough to be included under people-who-fought-oppression, or T.Jefferson doesn’t belong among Enllightenment thinkers who inspired 18tha nd 19th c. revolutions…or capitalism has a negative connotation so we should call it “free enterprise” instead).
Oh, almost cherry blossom time! Five weeks?
Oh I hear ya about the $$$$. I ended up buying a t-shirt pack from Best Buy for around $20, but I figured I got a good deal with the cool t-shirt :-)
applause !!!!!
Hopefully sooner — maybe early April from what I’m hearing.
Wow, but then, I’ve never heard of his second band, or heard their music either, so I trust on you folks to fill me in.
*G*
Cry Like A Baby was one of my teen favs, too . . . . loved that voice and band.
Hmmm, wonder if it can be grassified, that’s a tough one, maybe The Letter, though . . . ;-)
What kind of justice?
Um, anything written by Hamsher or Walker, I think . . . that about cover it Pups? Ya think?
*G*
Hiya CE
Whew, thanks – I was afraid to admit that I never heard of that one, either. Unless there are songs I’d recognize without knowing the performers – that happened a lot in the ’70′s
And, I feel so out of it….there’s a new Jimi Hendrix album? Explain, please, ES and LL?
Wonderful! Ms CE and I spent two days on the Mall about four years ago…she was interviewing for graduate school there, and I had a luncheon invitation at the National Gallery employee cafeteria. That was on the top floor, with a view out over the Mall. Cherry blossoms were blowing like snow. My goodness, I won’t forget it!!!
anticipation….. *g*
I’ve got a feeling nobody north of the Mason Dixon line will buy those texts. And the kids that don’t know squat won’t get into universities.
Hiya PPDCUS!
Every St. Pat’s Day is a bit harsh for me. Today was no different, but for different reasons.
One of which, was I was thinking about Dennis K’s flip today, and the oath, you know to protect, preserve, defend….
They are in full bloom here, in the godforsakenvallythattimeforgot . . . along with the white flowers on trees, and even the Camelia’s are beginning to bloom.
One week it’s 50′s day, low 40′s night, next thing ya know it’s The 4 Days Of Spring, and we hit the 80′s and 60′s and that’s the BEST of the early summer as we crawl our way thru the 100′s.
Sigh.
I’m whining, and it’s early . . . pathetic. ;-)
It sure is quite a sight down there at the Mall and the Tidal Basin when the cherry blossoms are in bloom :-) I hope to be able to get down there and get some photo ops on a weekday very soon.
Here ya go — it is basically a bunch of unreleased tracks that were discovered and cleaned up. Good stuff!
Cheers, Larue! At least you have bloom…we won’t until May. BUT, I do smell spring in the air.
Hi Chris and Sunny, good to see you.
Yeah it was warm and nice outside.
I do love it, but I found out that I love DC Mall in December even more!
Believe this – it was frikking 70 here in Denver today!
Mebbe snow on Friday – it’s always crazy here.
Oh isn’t that fun, with all of the Christmas trees? For some reason I never made it down there this past Christmas time. Maybe next year…
I’m Cleveland, Kelly.
I wept this morning, but I’m so torn. Dennis has so many poor people in his district, and he wants to do them proud. They needed him to vote yes (please don’t hate me).
After listening to Karl Goebbels Rove on Fresh Air today, I was thinking about the justice in Leviticus being visited on his Faustian mortgaged soul.
Heh, not to fry yer head, but . . .
I’m in a band now, and we cover Voodoo Child!!!
Banjo, fiddle, nylon git, dobro (me) and electric bass.
Acoustic Eclectic Jam Band
Even THIS Larue is trippin on the wierd . . . Caravan, the jazz tune!
Friend Of The Devil, Dead
You Ain’t Goin Nowhere, Dylan (camp jam fav)
An Indian Raag, in G#/D# that I just can’t follow.
Some Bill Monroe bluegrass trads.
Jazz version of Sweet Georgia Brown.
It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue (Dylan) with 4 part harmonies.
House Of The Rising Sun
Your Cheating Heart!
I’m working on the Dead’s New Minglewood Blues.
Music’s wierd, and I think I’ve found some FINE wierd folks who are crazy too.
The band leader want’s to do White Rabbit!!! *G*
And some really, really wierd jazz and other Indian raga’s and raag’s . . .
Dude’s nuts and I’m learning stuff I only vaguely knew about quartone music and how you fake it in western half tone music.
I’m telling ya, life’s wierd, and I thought I had it figgered out when I was a teen.
Go figger . . ??? ;-)
I lean a bit agnostic, and more than a bit to keeping MY spirituality to myself, but by dawg I hope that crap dies out before it spawns elsewhere. This ride’s getting wierd, even if I DON’T live in Texas (bless Betsy and other’s who do).
Heh, I smell it, and my wife smells it, and we sneeze it, clog it, and curse it!!!!
*G*
Love me some New Minglewood Blues!
Ok, 70F to snow . . . *G*
I love surprises!!!
lol
I’m poor and I didn’t need him to vote that way. *s* Don’t hate me either…)
I’m very disappointed, but he’s near the bottom of my disappointed list.
Aha! Neti pot to the rescue!
Oooooo nice clean recording.
CE, you raise the ONLY question not asked today at FDL that I saw, and one I’m not sure how I’d answer.
Are the needs of your constituents greater than the needs of the nation in the moments of national crisis?
I have NO answer for that one. None, what so ever.
Life is not fair, and asks questions I don’t want to have to answer, at times.
Have you seen the first salvo in November’s mid-term massacre, ES?
Here’s one from the past…
One of my main regrets in life is that I came too late to the Dead party *g* But I can live vicariously with the Dead channel on my XM radio…
LOL!
White Rabbit, as in the Airplane? Plus Your Cheating Heart? And Dylan?
Gives meaning to the word “electic.”
I’m enjoying the image of blowing cherry blossoms from the top floor of the National Gallery. (Caught the end of the season one year, long ago).
On that lovely vision, think I’d better go grab some sleep.
Thanks for the kind words, all. I love Late Night!
I know. Dennis has often appeared in front of me, at the reference desk, seeking information. Sometimes I like him, and sometimes I don’t. This is a terrible time.
When I think about justice, it morphs into vengeance, and I can’t think on that too long.
That’s the one!!!
Lions Den, yadda . . . only I like the faster version off their first album in ’66 I think it was . . .
Nice pick LL!!! Great blues tune, and the dobro gets to make like a slide git!!!
Acoustically, with a fiddle, banjo, and git and bass, and good harmony vocals, it rocks!!!
*G*
Wow. He does his own research?
(reminds me of JD Hayworth telling Rachel that her “researchers” let her down, got their facts wrong – one of the researchers was herself, and no, they were not wrong)
Que?????? We take little pink pills!!! lol
Yeah, a good one!!!
Thanks for featuring Portugal the Man again, ES. I’m going in for emergency surgery Friday morning. My doctor’s receptionist is the bass player’s mom. I told her you had featured them recently here. I’ll let her know you did it again.
Yes.
Meaning, do I think a massacre is what lies ahead?
It’s hard to imagine Dems will turn out better than they did in MA at the moment… that’s for sure.
I probably wont be a Dem.
In my 50th year, I aim to learn how to play guitar and maybe, just maybe, play well enough to pay homage to Jerry and many others *g*
Heh.. you know I got lucky.. caught the last dozen years in No. Cal… and boy did I make the most of it…)
You continue to amaze . . . that was nice!! *G*
Bless ya, hoss . . . ;-)
That’s really true. In a lot of ways. Today was a day of rage, and shame, and outrage, and it’s really hard to move around that. It just is.
Someone named “egregious” just reminded me about “time.” Gotta hang for a bit and move on. It’s really true.
After we were talking about them last week.. i ran across this and just loved the vid. Deserves an award or something.
My allergies were killing me, and the medication was breaking my checkbook. Convinced by co-workers, I found out that using a neti pot made it possible to give up all prescriptions for nasal allergies.
((( ET ))) Sending positive vibes and hoping all goes well for you.
Kuchinich came through. See this.
And this.
Is it the blown up elbow?
There’s room for vengence in our lives I think . . . I just don’t know how far I’m willing to go until I get there.
My life history tells me I’ll look down, and walk away.
My greatest fears and nightmares continue to be that I get dead as I walk away cuz I didn’t finish the job.
We are humans, we struggle with it all, to our last breath, no?
Thanks, Kelly! Bon nuit!
capitalism has a negative connotation so we should call it “free enterprise” instead
That’s very special.
ET!!!!!!
Wishin best and healing toughts . .
Nothing life threatening?
You’ll have to give us a listen!
Hitting the wall here in EDT-ville…thanks ES, and good night all!
Thanks, Loo Hoo. Well!
(((eureka)))
I haven’t had allergies since I moved to Ohio. Until yesterday! Huge allergic reaction to whatever’s blooming right now. I may have to try your remedy.
Just so we’re clear on who’s being resurrected from the dead to take back congress — It’s the perfect marriage of Saint Ronnie and his corporate paymaster GE.
Night LL, so good to see you.
Look online for using a neti pot. Kosher salt, water, open mouth and breath slowly. Great results! It is a Yoga requirement.
ET!
Hugs to you.
Awww thanks Sunny. The struggle continues. And boy oh boy do i have both the fighting spirit and my sense of humor intact..)
Hope you all do too.
LL, I started at 18 with a four stringed modal appalachian lap dulcimer, and played by ear.
Limited to what it COULD play with, but had friends thru the years who helped me get better ensamble with others.
’02 I bought a dobro, and I’ve been struggling since to learn music theory, the basics, and the techniques of playing the dobro . . . it’s been brutal at times, but I hit fests at LEAST 4 times a year, and my camp mates always bring me along and I’ve gotten better.
Only lately in the past two months have I cracked the local jam scene, and met folks and I’m now picking twice or 3 times a week at times, and THAT’S how ya get better.
Please try and go for it!! Pick what ever instrument you want! But do it, take a few lessons, hit jams, pick with others, and be sure to hang with the genres of music you want to play and find others!!!
If some don’t embrace ya, keep knocking on doors! Dues will be paid, but at some point, like I hit, all us rookies find peeps to nurture us and move us forward, without having to pay for the lesson!!!!
Oh, and don’t be ripped off by teachers who want your money more than they want you to get better!!!
The best teachers will figger out what your ability to learn is, and TELL you, if you’ve not figured it out first within a few weeks!!!
And play to cd’s at home!!!
/endsharing
A great non-drug solution for allergies few people know about — and Pharma intends to keep it that way, CE.
Great to see you too!
*poofs away in a cloud of contact high smoke*
*g*
“And I’ll say it again then,”
What’s a neti pot????
I’m clueless!!!
We get over the counter cheap pink pills, so cost is not an issue.
But health, drowsyness, and purity of non pill desires ARE a consideration!!!
Bless ya for taking the time to reply . . . . don’t mean to annoy . . .
Sirota – prescient!
((( Larue ))) thank you for that insight!
G’night for reals…
Thanks, pups. Just my bursitis elbow. It infected pretty fully over the end of the weekend, but the antibiotics have kicked in. I’m headed off to bed early – at least for me.
I need a little amp and some sort of electric guitar. Here I sit way out in the woods where my learnin’ wouldn’t bother anyone.
A few years back I house sat for some friends in winter… they had a pure bull mastiff, a mutt pit bull named Trouble and an old trombone that used to be in the Harvard band.
Me and those dogs walked for miles through the Mark Twain National Forrest while i played/learned that trombone… and The Mastiff loved to sing along.
It was quite a show that nobody saw…)
Rest easy amigo, please keep us posted.
Certainly not at THIS stage!!!! EEEEKKKKSSs!!!
*G*
But yeah, and one of the band members is a recording guy, with all the toys and studio.
Not bad, there, to practice with using mics, amps, and a mixing board.
Not only does it point up ever flawed note on the instruments, it points up the vocal failures!
Good stuff to practice with!! I’m a lucky dawg, it’s a dream for me . . .
Healing thoughts to you ET
Ah, thanks . . . ‘preciate that linkage . . . off we go!
Take care, ET — best wishes for your surgery on Friday
Easiest to think about justice in terms of law, imho. Past that dwell the dragons.
My mood. Sorry. But true.
Funny how we say good night and then take another peek and get sucked back in!
Ahhh, we rest easier as you do then . . . thanks for all you do to inform us of things.
*G*
(((ET)))
Hee hee… so true.
Yup. Sirota is brilliant.
’twas almost funny watching you play that. I don’t know why.
Sounds fun! Nature+trombone.
LOVE the trombone story!! That’s classic.
For stringed work, non chromatic, buy a $25 local made 4 string appalachian dulcimer!!!
Tune it to DDAD.
.10, .10, .15, .30 guage strings, treble to bass.
Then get a chromatic instrument like a git, uke, tenor git.
Or, if ya fall like I did, go with a square necked dobro ya play with a steel bar in yer left hand1
6 Strings, GBDGBD. The first three strings are tuned the same as the last three strings, so it repeats.
Open G tuning.
Like a dulcimer, almost ANYTHING sounds good!!!
Then ya learn the neck . . .
Course, learning the right hand picking techniques are tough if you’ve never fingerpicked a git, or a banjo.
But hey, you got time!!! *G*
Or just by some harmonicas, learn to play a chromatic one, and change yer name to some blues dude.
*G*
MInor is NO reason to apologize, I worship the minors . . . *G*
Damn, yer good, hoss . . . how do you do that with out sheet music? Totally memorized.
You real musicians kill me . . . but inspire. *G*
Wonder what you could do to an accordian, and TEXMEX or Country Swing music . . . *G*
It was a blast Loo Hoo. My playing improved a lot more than the mastiff’s singing did.. )
It’s the Bermuda Shorts.
Blue Springs is already taken... but not by a performer.
Ha! I think it’s the energy too. You played that since you were a kid?
You speak the truth. ((Sunny))
Prolly.
All mouth open like, “I can’t believe I have to play this godd@mn revolutionary prelude AGAIN, dammit! You know it already!”
Hey! I can play Oh Suzanna on the harmonica. Does that count?!
Eureka Blue Daddy Springs!!!
Perfect blueman’s handle!
*G*
Gotta run, thanks to ALL Pups today for the chats.
Kelly. Be well, our hearts with yer healing, you know that.
Thanks for the vid work. You continue to amaze.
*zzzzzz*
You amaze, Kelly. Between the languages and the music (which I suppose is another language), I’m blown away!
Whoops, one last fino fino, OF COURSE yes it counts, BIG time!!!
It’s music!!! *G*
*zzzz*
Yup, I just hit the wall myself..
Good night fabulous firedogs.
sweet dreams, eureka :-)
HAH! Go get George Bush.
Me too – I’m out. Just one more thing.
This is MY day, St. Patrick’s. It’s mine in so many ways. It’s the day I was screwed, it’s the day I was liberated, it’s the day I was betrayed, it’s the day I freed myself.
So in one way, I apologize for being all over the map. In another way, I don’t.
What I have always counted on since ’75, is that tomorrow is the 18th.
Slainte!
night all – be well
There’s an neighborhood just over the District line in MD called “Kenwood.” The streets are lined with cherry trees. I think they’re even more beautiful than those at the Tidal Basin. Neighborhood kids set up lemonade stands. It’s a nice experience.
Blessings pups…. special mention – today’s mods.
I just saw one of those piece-of-crap ads featuring St. Ronnie. Made me barf. What slimeballs, all of them.
I suppose you have left for the night but I too want to thank you for your effort. Karl Rove has done Tremendous harm to our country. He is/was one of the powerful people in the world (he got the most powerful person in the world, Dick Cheney, to give him cover for his activities that are most likely treasonous. (Valerie Plame outting)
He should be in jail or on trial in the Hague. Yet he is signing books as if he was just another author.
Next time you want to do something like this I suggest a flip video camera and a friend to shoot you asking the question and their response. One thing you will find is that asking one good question isn’t enough they are trained to dodge the hard ones. Be prepared to follow up. And here is a great tip. If you see a way he dodged another question by someone else, ask a follow up on that question “You really didn’t answer the question, please explain…”
This follow up on other questions is powerful because they usually only have one BS answer ready.
k
