Good Morning Pups,
Well tonight when we go to bed we will have to set our clocks forward one hour. In essence, we lose an hour of sleep. I never really thought about it, but I was looking at the news last night and they had an entire segment on it.
There have been studies showing that after the time change, there have been increased reports of violence, emotional issues and car accidents. All from losing one hour of sleep? I never thought that much about it before…I just try to get to bed a little earlier so I won’t be late for church the next day.
I know from experience that when I am tired, I can be very irritable. Mr. DeVeria and I almost had a moment yesterday because he was tired and I was in full gear. It’s that time of year for me, so sometimes I can go non-stop. But when I get tired, I’m tired and have had enough, so I had to stop and be considerate. He needed a break.
I suppose that tiredness can cause all of those reactions, but my question is do you think it was from the one hour or was the person with the issue already tired from jumpstreet?
Things that make you go, hmmmmm.
What do you think about it pups? Pull Up A Chair…

About Firedoglake
Wow am I first? Good morning, Deveria!
G’morning Molly! Why, yes you are. It’s a rainy, windy wet day here in the District…where is the sun???
That DST was just discussed somewhere, I was half listening, pro’ly a news show – and it wastes energy, as the story went. because we stay up later and use power. It’s a conspiracy!
morning, DeVeria, and I’ll be back from breakfast in a few.
I had an odd moment last year when we went OFF daylight saving time (and by the way, it is officially daylight saving — not savings — time). I had a brand new fancy-schmancy thermostat that I got with my new furnace. I carefully set it back an hour before I went to bed, and when I got up I discovered it was off by TWO hours. I had to set it ahead an hour. Apparently it is programmed for DST in its internal calendar that also knows when the weekend is!
I don’t know, maybe its me, but I just never put ANY thought into it. I know once a year, I gain an hour and once a year I lose an hour. So, I wonder if there are supposed to be any repurcussions from gaining an hour?
Wow, a thermostat? Thats amazing. I was impressed when they got the cell phones to do it on their own.
It is wet here in Indianapolis too! I’m here to help my son move. Hard work! But he and his girlfriend have bought a wonderful house!
I detest daylight savings time. For every family living on the front end of a time zone that celebrates having that extra hour, there’s another family living in the back end of the time zone with their children going to school in the dark for an extra month.
And the reality that few are willing to acknowledge? It does NOT mean an extra hour of daylight. We’d still have that same hour of daylight, just in the morning instead of the evening. /harrumph harrumph
Ugh…moving is bad enough. But, you have to move in the rain? I’ll think good thoughts that way.
You know, you are right. Not an extra hour, just at a different time of the day. We should have our own news segment.
The cell phones get it from the cell towers. I think my laptop gets it from time.apple.com. I can’t figure out where the thermostat gets it, since AFAIK it has no Internet connection.
Many years ago, my late husband was in Brazil & I was in NYC. The phone rang at 4am, and I was instantly alert: can’t be good news when the phone rings at that hour. Well, it was only my husband calling to chat. I heard his friend, where he was staying, walk in the room and ask who he was talking to, and Herb identified me. The friend said: It’s 4am in NYC. Herb said: No it isn’t, it’s 8 am and she’s up and alert. I said: It’s 4am and what do you expect when the phone rings at that hour. Brazil sticks way out to the east of the U.S. and Herb had gotten the 2 hour time differnce confused. (The west coast of South America lines up with the east coast of North America, longitudinally speaking.)
I love DST, want it to stay light as long as possible, so there.
Visited distant relative in NE Poland in June 01. The sun seemed to set at a reasonable hour, around 9pm. But after a few days, I noticed bright sunlight streaming into the room where I was staying, facing east. Looked at my watch, and the hour was 3am. That corner of Poland is not a whole lot south of Stockholm.
Put me in the column for loving an extra hour of sunlight at the end of the day. We have ‘summer hours’ where I work so we quit at 4. In the summer that means I have 4-5hrs of sunlight after work vs being dark when I leave at 5 during the shortest days of winter. Love that nature gives that to me.
On the “front end” of the time zone (I’m about 30 miles from the CST/DST line) we have to struggle to get our kids to go to sleep when the sun is still up (my kids are grown, but I remember those days). But I love the extra time to ride my bicycle 15 or so miles after work and still have daylight left over to eat dinner on my screened porch.
There’s another time signal mechanism. I have a clock radio that automatically adjusts, and I’ve owned it for probably 25 years, so it’s not new.
I can’t say for sure that this is the case but I’d guess the ‘clock and calendar’ are probably hardwired into the thermostat.
Meaning, it is internal rather than external (and would require an updated chip if they were to change the time frames for DST once again in the future) A similar problem existed the last time they changed the times for DST
wow
I’ve lived in Indiana for nearly 7 years, and it was one state that resisted DST. They’re still yelling about it and we finally got on the program about 3 years ago. Count me as one who loves it!!
And yes, of course it is not saving, it is shifting but I like it anyway. It is beginning to creep into the high 50s and low 60s here and the bike will be out in a couple of weeks! YAY!
I can understand that…I like having the extra hour at the end of the day too, when I can enjoy it. I’m not a morning person at all.
what time is that?
You mean the woman who complained that the extra hour of sunlight was killing her grass was wrong? lol
I’ve lived on the front end and back end of Eastern and Central time zones over the years (as well as in the mountain, Alaskan, and Hawai’i time zones). The biggest problem I ever had on Hawai’i time was remembering if the east coast was 5 or 6 hours ahead since Hawai’i does not do DST.
Which comes to another little hook as we tend to forget, the effects of daylight saving are more pronounced the further north you live – longer hours of daylight in the north in the summer and shorter daylight hours in the winter
But I wonder HOW it knows?? We’ve changed DST start/stop dates at least a couple of times in recent years. I figure it may be programmed into the thermostat, since I have separate settings for weekends, but how would it know what date to change on IF we change the start/stop date. There is probably some simple explanation, but I don’t know what it is.
I asked my SO to buy me a sit down stationary bike so I can work out per the doctor’s instruction…maybe by the summer I’ll be able to buy an outside bike and go biking!
HA! Yup, she was wrong. I’ve heard some funny things, but that’s a new one
We also drove by the U.S. black rendition site while we were in Poland. Of course, I didn’t know that’s what it was until 2007. As we drove by a stucco wall about 8 feet high, my cousin said: The Russians moved out and the U.S. moved in. When rawstory broke the location in 2007, I got out the detailed road map book I brought back with me, and sure enough, it was exactly where we drove by.
You can’t be serious?
Hi Deveria.
I just wish the gov would leave it alone and give us the extra hour even during the winter when it gets dark at 5:00PM!
HALT – Hungry, angry, lonely, tired; time to take a break.
I get in big trouble when I have couple of those things going on at once. And I don’t think it’s DST.
Maddow had a bunch of stuff about it last night and I thought…”here we go” I LIKE DST!.
I think most Americans are way to tired all the time.
I have a little something I use when I get overwhelmed by stress and exhaustion. It’s called “Adrenal Support”.
I was in a lot of pain and stress from various painful situations this winter and I went over to Whole Foods ( I know, I know)and got some of this homeopathic tincture, took it for a month and I’m back to my usual sunny, upbeat self.
Doctors ignore the adrenals. they are small gland which sit atop the kidneys and produce all sorts of hormones and adrenalin…which gives us energy, and fights inflammation.
They are very tiny glands and were not built for the “fight or flight” stress we have all the time in this modern world.
I forget about them too until illness, pain or stress suddenly makes me think “I’ll go out and get that stuff!”
And I take it as often as I think about it during the day. Gets kinds expensivo, but it’s worth it and fights off other diseases as well. Bones up my immune system and, as I said, give s me back my sunny outlook, no matter what the politicians are doing!
This is what I usually use: Adrenal Support
But I picked up some that was twice as expensive and it really put the whup to my exhaustion.
You can get it in tablets as well and put it UNDER your tongue for the sub-lingual properties; goes straight into your endocrine system.
Thats’ my wise-womon wisdom for today.
I have a stationary bike and I HATE it. It is not the same at all. I know a lot of people who use them for exercise, but mine just collects dust. But I’m outside on my bike from April through much of November. Put in more than 1,000 miles last year.
There’s a govt clock (I think it’s govt) that sends out signals. I did a quick google, but because I don’t know what it’s called, I can’t find a description of it.
I did 1245. I would ride during the winter, but this year we had snow a lot, and even when the roads were dry, there’s a lot of grit from the salt/sand they put on the road, so I didn’t bother.
But again, if they did carry it year round, the schools and such on the back end of the time zone, it would still be dark during the morning recess.
Another good item to keep from getting stressed is potatoes, but whatever works. Saratonin (sp?) which is something that I have high amounts of, thru sheer genetics.
And DST was on Rachel and/or Countdown last night, that’s pro’ly what I heard the energy use aspect on, had it streaming this a.m. – do not get MSNBC.
I have no idea if the story is true. But, supposedly, that was a complaint voiced by an opponent of DST.
I have never heard of that. This year, I have been trying to take things in moderation. No less work, but I am trying to not only take care of the work but also of myself and those I love that are around me. Moderation has been the key for me. Stopping yesterday and going to dinner with my SO helped me to take a minute and breathe. The biggest thing is trying not to get to that exhausted point. I’m learning, that is just not healthy.
1000 miles? Not sure if I’ll ever get there, but I have to start somewhere.
Ran into getting dark early as a problem when driving to the coast in December, it was only about dinner time, but so dark the deer were coming out on the road, so I stopped short of Pensacola, when I really wanted to go farther but not by hitting a deer.
Over the years, I’ve seen a number of stories indicating that lack of sleep messes us up more than we’d like to think–in terms of alertness (I’ve heard about alertness; it sounds good), mental functioning, not to mention one’s emotional state. Apparently, if the body doesn’t get enough sleep, it goes about making up for the loss any way it can, including brief periods of unconsciousness right in the middle of the day. So we must all take our naps.
Geez…she had too much time on her hands.
Having to be alert at certain times does make DST, and bad sleep habits, a problem, which telecommuting has lessened. I have always been an early morning person, so schedule real thinking activities then. I worked for awhile with some one who really hated to go to sleep at night, and always fell asleep when any thoughtful activities occurred during the day. We had to have some one on hand to essentially baby sit.
Yeah, growing up I always thought I was a “night person.” But after I was on a 6:15 – 3:15 shift while a GI, I discovered I wasn’t so much a night person as one who needed 7 to 8 hours sleep each night, regardless of when I got it. Although working swing and mid shift jobs a couple of times, the daylight sleep was not the most restful I’ve ever had.
Well I haven’t gotten to the place of taken naps, but I do take breaks and don’t work quite as long. Still working on that…it will be better after April hopefully.
not at all…
Day sleep probably is in the face of more noise than the night version. Being retired now, I am just beginning to adjust to having options open. I still feel guilty about sleeping in.
Anyone planning a spring break vacation? Heading to Myrtle Beach next month.
Wow! That’s a LOT. I would hope to get that many miles in this year, but I probably am going to have back surgery in May and I’m not sure when I will be allowed to ride again. Living in NY, you get lots of snow, and in NW Indiana we do too, and when it gets below mid-50s I just stop riding for the year, especially when we get snow and slop.
Nags Head was a delight to visit, some time back, farther north. Enjoy.
Really…my SO mentioned Myrtle Beach. I may plan to go there a few days for my birthday in June. Time to plan another getaway. Where are you staying?
That’s probably the explanation. I guess I won’t know for sure until/unless we change the dates again.
I suppose that’s right in the northern latitudes…..
Yeah, but I had a bad tooth that blew up…sometimes you just can’t avoid physical stress…so I help myself out where ever I can. I use sub-lingual B-12 as well cause I’m pretty much a veggie.
Lots of beautiful rides near my house. Not unusual for me to do a 20-30 mile loop a couple of times/week. I also use the bicycle for small shopping trips, like to the farmers’ market. Last year, I went over the mountain only once. It’s about a 1100′ altitude change (2200′ round trip), and the shortest loop is 42 miles. There was so much rain last year, that I went only on a day when I could be pretty sure there wasn’t going to be an afternoon shower. I will NOT do the coming home uphill slog in the rain. Gotta draw the line somewhere.
BTW, I average about 9-1/2 mph on that trip. Every other bicyclist passes me by. They’re most lanky muscular men fitted out in the lastest bicycle gear. I wear ordinary outdoor clothes.
I didn’t do well with my vitamins this week…sigh, have to do better next week.
Rented a condo at the Palms. I’m not recommending it but that’s where our friends are all staying so that’s where we booked. Great location. We’ve gone nearly every year for 20yrs. If you want recommendations, I’d be happy to oblige.
What fun….enjoy. This is spring break week here; means alot less traffic. I do not know when the New Orleans spring break is….that always means a big drift to fla., no matter the weather.
My Apple laptop computer has an internal clock that shows on the screen and, bless its little heart, seems to be programed to know when to adjust for the time changes in the spring/fall. Way cool!
Good morning all.
My dog has been waking me up at 4:30 all winter.
Does the time change mean I am going to be able to sleep until 5:30?
Here a little north of you, I’ve heard quite a few snippets of advice not to go to northern Mexico because of the violence. Sad.
Really sad…Juarez apparently a big mess. I used to love that trip.
My only concession to “fashion” is my bike shorts with the padding. I don’t have much of my own, so I need the shorts, but I wear them with a yellow long-sleeved t-shirt or a yellow sleeveless shirt (depending on temp). Enough of my ride is in traffic that I need the bright shirt.
I usually do the 16 miler several times a week, and a longer one on weekends. I could ride to our farmer’s market, but I have no basket on my bike to put anything in.
Yeah it reads the time off Apple’s time server. You can even set it to adjust if you take a laptop to another time zone.
Have a good day, pups! I am off to help with the move!
I didn’t know you were from NOLA. We went there last November after years of having it on our ‘must visit’ list. Loved it.
I do a lot of biking.
It is very good for the body and the head.
The Tour wannabees on their high tech bikes and in their fancy gear blow by me, but that is OK.
the sun is here in texas. come on down, y’all!
Well, I am not there now….but lived there for years through most of my college + education and had my family. I was ready to leave, but it is in my bones. Fla. was almost “next door.”
i really hate it too. i’d rather not be switching all of a sudden. just let the seasons take their course.
As long as your not planning to put your kids in the school system.
in texas, it works better having the extra daylight in the morning before the sun gets too hot to be outside.
Here next to OK it’s still in the 30′s this a.m., so the spring flowers are staying around for awhile. My pear tree bloomed out so beautifully, the next day seems just to fade away, so I really like the cooler temps.
no kidding! rabid right wing board of education here in the state that would secede.
Good Morning DeVeria, pups
Daylight Savings time always throws me for a loop! Totally screws up my inner clock, but surprisingly does not alter the cats’ clocks *sigh*
As for out er clocks, my VCR is programmed for the old dates for the time changes so twice a year it resets its clocks on the wrong weekend :( Gets me everytime.
All you Spring Breakers, have a ball! Nothing like some sun and fun to recharge the batteries.
The whole damned right wing thing passed in Texas. See today’s NYT
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/13/education/13texas.html?th&emc=th
I am ill over it.
gotta run, just stopped by to stay hi. i’m attending a workshop all weekend – in macrobiotics spring is about cleansing and nourishing our livers. that’s what i’m up to. see y’all later.
And what do have against Born Again History? (not a funny joke, sorry)
yes please, ill talk to him
interesting to see…let us know
Have a good one!
it is really raining here!
March showers bring April flowers?
Depends what you’re looking for.
Elegance with walking trails and a few restaurants:The Royale Palms or Margate at Kingston Plantation. Very upscale (for MB) but pricey and away from the action. Also, not the best beach.
In the middle of the action (walk to stores, restaurants etc.) but can be a bit run down (nothing scary but these condos do get abused): The Palms Resort, Patricia Grand, Anderson Club (newest, so nicest), Carribbean etc.
A bit north of the action, but huge condos: Regency Towers.
The best tip: Check out VRBO dot com. You can rent directly from the owner and pay much less. Our 3br condo for the week is $800 (and we’re splitting it).
Haven’t seen SD…but for the cat news….My legacy cat has been having GI trouble, along with her asthma….so the vet wanted to change her diet….to add in gradually something called Duck & Green Pea (Is that a feast?) Now I have watched her carefully go for the new stuff and ignoring the old….maybe the old really did not agree with her…Or, is she just picky? Talk about having a “new baby”, but she’s actually old.
O My.
I agree. The days are lengthening naturally so it’s ridiculous to get up an hour earlier.
DST is complying with corporate clock worship rather than nature. Annual sleep deprivation on a world scale is detrimental to humans; but does reinforce corporate control on a subliminal level.
The people that favor getting up an hour earlier are either morning people or make their own hours — i.e. don’t have to get up to punch the corporate clock.
Good Morning, Ms. Flowers and All
I slept in this morning. But, here I am. The time change doesn’t seem to bother me, for some reason. I too prefer to have the sunlight at the end of the day, though.
DeVeria, my daughter lives in DC too, as you know, and she and her new husband are meeting her dad and his girlfriend in Florida today for a week of vacation. There is a cousin who lives in the Keys, I think. Good for her to get away from work and a winter of harsh weather.
I sure hope so! If they don’t get washed away..lol
oh wow…that’s great. I want to be near the water, find some things to do and of course, some nice restaurants.
my #84 was to gw #68 ;o)
The Palms Resort has some nice features. There’s a balcony off the LR and one off the Master bedrm. You can wake up to a view of the ocean and the sunrise. Sitting on the balcony with a cup of coffee is my favorite thing.
Now, I’m off. Going to do some outlet shopping today. Have a great day, everyone.
That sounds great…unfortunately, I have to wait a while before I can get away. But she will have a great time…its supposed to rain until Monday here.
Enjoy! Shopping…my favorite pasttime!
*sigh*
Good Morning…I thought the last night conversation was hysterical. Sorry I had to leave ;)
Speaking of getting away, how was the trip to San Francisco? Were you able to take in any sights and get some relaxation going?
Mornin’, DeVeria, pups
I don’t change my clocks until sometime Sunday. That way I lose an hour sometime during the day and just go about my usual bumbling around.
We be some funny bunnies sometimes. It’s so serious here all day and it is fun on Saturday mornings (thank you DeVeria) and at late night, er, or latish night for some crazy talk, kidding and sharing. Some of us can’t always stay up for Suz and ES, but they do an admirable job of keeping our heads on straight, I must say.
Honestly, I worked just as much out there as I do here. I did get to some nice restaurants though. Maybe next time….I’ll probably go out there again some time this summer. I didn’t know it rained so much there!
I set mine ahead already this AM, for the same reason
That’s good…I can’t do that because if I don’t change them, I WILL be late for church. I’m almost late every Sunday as it is.
Prices in FL are ‘way down, from my trip in Dec. But the winter came in hard and stayed around for awhile, so hoping it’s letting up now for your daughter.
Good morning, everyone! May I grab that last cup of coffee and take it with me to my new thread? Thanks!
There’s a saying, someone help me, about the coldest or wettest winter was the summer spent in San Francisco.
Yeah, they do…I go back and read. You can’t always be serious. I’m serious all day while I’m working…well, when my SO isn’t cracking me up. I like just being laid back sometimes.
I have to go with my church at the end of the month, but it is a bus trip and I’ll just be going to church. I’ve been wanting to take a cruise from there, but I haven’t talked you know who into that one yet. He says its too much water and he can’t swim!
I see PW is up upstairs, and I have one up over here; http://seminal.firedoglake.com/diary/34607
thanks for good tho’ts and conversation.
G’morning! Get your coffee…I just had my bowl of cereal.
Get him some water wings. (all my jokes this a.m. are not funny)
Thanks, and Hi ya, Ruthie? Does anyone in your family call you that?
It wasn’t too cold, but it was so wet!
If I keep pushing…I’ll get him there. When the weather breaks, I’m gonna get him on the Spirit of DC for an evening cruise to warm him up to the idea a bit. It’s all a process. I never knew they were so much work!
Actually, only my brother, and he does it as a joke. But it’s not anything I have against the -ie, just this top down dignified name stuff.
shhhhhh, the sun’s out. High winds Thursday, cold rain all day Friday. Suxxxxxxx.
No, no. That is funny. I was just wondering how large those things come. Might be a funny sight. DeVeria, don’t tell him we said that, okay.
I’m going to jump upstairs to see PW.
The first cruise I ever took was Windjammer, it was perfectly wonderful, but they don’t do Latin America anymore, just Canada – but oceans are my idea of gorgeous, so the water is a plus imho.
If I did that today I’d be ranting about where the damn Rays game was on the radio. Like getting to stadium way too early.
Ha! When I was younger, I was always called Debbie, then when I turned 30, I switched to Deborah because I thought it sounded more sophisticated. Debbie just sounded to my brain too much like a cheerleader or a porn star. Now, most people call me Deb. Anything but Late For Dinner as my daddy used to say. *g*.
Winds were up, hereabouts too. And fire warnings right on the top of rain, glad I didn’t have a yearning for barbeque.
demi, you could call it a starter wet suit, maybe.
There is nothing like sunrise and sunset at sea. Nothing.
As long as you spell it right, we used to say on the campaign trail.
yep
http://picasaweb.google.com/RCalvo8/CruiseSpring2009#
It would be a funny sight!
I LOVE cruises…can’t wait for the next one
Absolutely!
You are in a funny bone mood today. Good for you!
so nice! where’d you go?
Have never been on a cruise, will never go on a cruise.
Any other life long sufferers from motion sickness will fully understand why.
(I get motion sickness standing on floating docks on the intra-coastal waterway. Have gotten it on excursion boats in the Gulf. Have gotten it sitting in movie theaters watching scenes with certain SFX. Was able to conquer cars, buses, and trains after I started wearing glasses. Finally mostly conquered air planes though it can still be problematic)
lovely, what a wonderful trip
demi and Elliott;
that was taken leaving Barcelona, Mediterranean trip, high point was the oldest structures in Europe, on Malta, sun worshiping temples – and as long as we’re in this economic meltdown and they’re dirt cheap, I’m putting in all sorts of time doing them.
dakine01, so sorry to hear that. Love the ocean, love the beach too.
All my years in the Navy only once was I on a ship as a passenger, not crew. None of the social amenities of a cruise ship but it was nice to be able to just laze around in the sun, treated like royalty. There were two of us and we had transferred to this brand new amphibious supply ship via highline and were on our way back to Japan.
I love being nextto the water, just not on it.
Awww, man, that’s got to be horrible. We had to discharge a guy in the 60s cuz he got sick moored to the pier. Put him on temporary duty ashore when we got underway.
Glad you can enjoy that part of it, then. It gets closer to me here in N.TX. every day, anyway. Yep, I’m getting silly this a.m.
oh wow…sorry to hear that
Is that you in the little hat? You’re adorable. So nice to have a face to go with the name. And, they are lovely shots.
SD, Good Morning….I left you a Caturday note above before you arrived.
We are having another diet experiment…And, so it goes…
Thanks, and yes, at the top of Cannes, happy as a clam. If the costs stay down, I may finish off a lot of dreams of getting to places I only tho’t I’d see in pictures.
Thanks for the travel hint. Off to Caturday now.
SD, if you’re still here, PW has a link upstairs at #5 that you must see.
One day, some of your suggestions would be a great topic. Im out as well…Dr.appt.
They can be really picky. Sometime between night and morning or vice versa they can decide that the current diet is unacceptable. Can’t tell at first whether it’s their attitude or they’re sick.
As a kid, I got to ride shotgun just so I would be next to the door for quick opening “just in case.” Five miles in a car, and it became touch and go from there to the end of the trip. A few years ago, I was visiting back in my hometown and drove out to the small town we had lived in. The road that caused me a lot of problems was still windy and curvy so I was able to understand some of the problem right there.
Just for you. This is a destroyer from the class after MORTON, a 945 Class can. Not too bad, no green water over the bridge yet.
A buddy of mine worked on oil rigs in the Gulf and we were talking one time when I was visiting him. He mentioned the accountant that came out to the rig one time right before a big storm and how he’d been confined to his cabin, deathly ill from all the pitching and too and fro. I told him, “Joe, that’s me. I would be (and have been) in that exact situation.”
He still didn’t quite understand it as he’d never had any problems but I can guarantee that anyone who has suffered from extreme motion sickness gets to the point that they feel like they have to get better just so they can die.
This poor guy we had we all felt sorry for him. Tied up he had to carry a bucket around with him. We had a hell of a time getting him discharged. Really nice guy but he was sick every minute. Never bothered me a bit, even in typhoons.
He really does sound pretty much like me as I would have been in the exact same situation.
