The pope’s spokesman has launched a vigorous counter-attack against a report linking Benedict XVI to a sex abuse cover-up while he was archbishop of Munich from 1977 to 1981.
Father Federico Lombardi appeared to suggest in an interview on Vatican Radio that the pope, who also has strong links to the city of Regensburg, was the victim of a plot.
“It’s rather clear that in recent days there have been people who have searched – with notable tenacity – in Regensburg and Munich for elements to personally involve the holy father in the question of the abuses,” Lombardi said. “To any objective observer it’s clear that these attempts have failed.”
A widening child sexual abuse inquiry in Europe has landed at the doorstep of Pope Benedict XVI, as a senior church official acknowledged Friday that a German archdiocese made “serious mistakes” in handling an abuse case while the pope served as its archbishop.
The archdiocese said that a priest accused of molesting boys was given therapy in 1980 and later allowed to resume pastoral duties, before committing further abuses and being prosecuted. Pope Benedict, who at the time headed the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising, approved the priest’s transfer for therapy. A subordinate took full responsibility for allowing the priest to later resume pastoral work, the archdiocese said in a statement.
The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said he had no comment beyond the statement by the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising, which he said showed the “nonresponsibility” of the pope in the matter.
Pope Benedict XVI gave the bishops of the Irish Catholic church a public dressing down at the Vatican today over the “heinous” child abuse scandal that has capsized the church’s moral authority in Ireland….
Before the crisis meeting, the Vatican’s secretary of state, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, had called on clergy who had abused children to admit to their “abominable acts” in a scandal that threatened to sink the church in Ireland. He told the bishops: “The most dangerous storm is that which touches the heart of believers, shaking their faith and threatening their capacity to entrust themselves to God.”
Taking “nonresponsibility,” blaming direct subordinates, saying it’s all a wicked plot, telling other people to do what you won’t do yourself: I guess they don’t miss a trick over there in the 21st century Vatican.
“What is at stake, and at great risk, is Benedict’s central project for the ‘re-Christianization’ of Christendom, his desire to have Europe return to its Christian roots,” said David Gibson, the author of a biography of Benedict and a religion commentator for Politicsdaily.com. “But if the root itself is seen as rotten, then his influence will be badly compromised.”
You don’t say.

OK. Have I entered an alternate reality or did this page just appear and then suddenly disappear, only to return without the prior comments?
I think the correct spelling is Pope Been-A-Dick.
Hey this crap as been going on for centuries!! Back to the fourth century when they mastered the art of using religion to gain power…
Evening all, sorry about the tech hiccup, all hail Suz
The official Vatican Exorcist is right, the devil dwells there. And he wears Prada.
A draft version was front-paged first.
diamonds and flowers dood
Nice hat. Bet you get a bowl of soup when you buy that hat. Looks good on him, though.
do d do do do do do d o d od o do do do///
He was archbishop the buck stops with him how can there be any counter attack?
Do as the Pope says, not as the Pope does.
Did we mention that the Pope’s new spokesperson is Meg Stapleton?
why doesn’t the Vatican just say that such allegations are merely ‘conspiracy theories’ and scoff at their accusers and the victims and the witnesses and snidely dismiss them all as kooks?
With this method, almost anything can be covered up, right?
Candy!
Good evening, Thers, thank you for undertaking this. It will be amazing to me if this pope survives this scandal; I only wonder if his successor will be Levada, now in Joey Ratz’s previous job and also Nancy Pelosi’s former Archbishop.
They had better message control in the 4th century, though. This is just sloppy PR for an organization that’s been in the PR business for centuries.
Any bets that if asked who these people are Lefties and Jews might be named? Me I’m betting it was the parents.
I got as much hassle with the church as anyone but the Parents of the Victims got me beat as far as motivation and local contacts go.
This wasn’t us.
They have gotten too used to everybody turning a blind eye to the transgressions of the rich and powerful, not to mention accepting that whole papal infallibility blather.
YUP!!
So Captain Kirk will be reading the Pope’s speeches as Beat Poetry?
I’d actually be surprised if he loses his gig. Accountability is just not done anymore, anywhere.
Good evening Thers!
Really. That is just so 20th century. We have moved beyond such pettiness.
LOL, but past tense? Not so much a Holy Father; more of a corrupt politician.
From the Guardian link, one of the people being blamed for the “attack”:
And the wacky punchline:
Actually, I really want to see that.
That is a 2000 year old tradition.
suz, you on late late night tonight?
Dear Lard, must I opine in Latin?
OK I will.
“Nil nimium, Ratzinger, velle tibi placere.”
sure am — have a great cartoon all lined up
What’s with all the hullabaloo…? All the Pope has to do is issue a special dispensation for himself… Then no problemo whatsoever…! :-)
Hasn’t that been the norm for the past 2,000 years or so…?
True dat. Papa Ratzi has a long way to go to match the Medicis and Borgias for depravity and corruption of the Holy See. He is trying however.
well, greetings and goodnight all rolled into one. I’m off to bed soon. Check out the toon tomorrow.
Despite being agnostic I try as much as possible to give churches the benefit of the doubt and hope their good works somehow balance out the harm and suffering they cause. It’s really hard to believe that can be the case with officials of the Catholic Church, however.
hey and g’nite oregondave
Night.
“If the Pope does it, it’s not a crime?”
You got word on the top next Pope Picks? I think the last Pope to be forced out of office was Pope Joan. assuming she existed. The last time the Church had a scandal this big was when the Pope’s Daughter was rumored to be a poisoner and his son almost conquered Italy.
This could be big, huge.

You are much more generous than I am.
You don’t like Rat Zingers? In fairness, I suspect the other Dolly Madison and Hostess products are also pretty ratty.
“his desire to have Europe return to its Christian roots,”
Um, sorry to tell you this your Holiness, but not many of us are nostalgically pining to return to the simpler times of the 14th century. We’ve had enough centuries of domination by cruel and insensitive authoritarians like you.
Coming soon to bookstores, a papal murder mystery…I bet someone somewhere is writing one.
Dan Brown is busily working on his next best seller as we speak.
Well, you could call the indulgences etc, if they were baked goods “Little Tibis”
Just ask Cardinal Law, who must give terrific advice. http://www.nytimes.com/2005/04/08/international/worldspecial2/08cardinals.html
Well I wouldn’t count that, that’s like puffed air.
Edit–response to Dr. Dick at 45
Lefty
The Irish thing by the way is an especially impressive bit of hubris — the Vatican refused to cooperate with the recent Irish government inquiry into priestly abuse, and then told the Irish hierarchy to be more “honest.”
Yep, Basically…! That was a large part of Luther’s theses that he subsequently nailed to a German Church’s door…! ;-)
Standard order having your cake and eating it too. Obstructionism from the very top blamed on the local folks.
Goes without saying. :-)
I recall back in the ’80s (or ’90s) PJP II addressed some teen assembly at Mile High Stadium and railed against contraception. At least as egregious, on another occasion he delivered a similar fatwa from the dirt-floor hovel of a South American mother of 12 children.
Doesn’t he want the EU to declare Christianity to be its official religion.
I am sitting here sputtering. Because every time this goddamn subject comes up, I am left without words.
Literally. I don’t know what to say, and I have so much to say about it.

A very good film.
evening, firegods
How about, “Fuck the bloody Pope. Fuck the bloody Vatican. Fuck the the bloody church. Fuck bloody religion. Fuck all the rich and powerful of the world.”?
***gentle reminder***
lets avoid insulting persons because of their weight
hi PPD
The Cardinal still can’t come back to America?
The extent of the anger in Ireland at the church is amazing, considering the history. Not considering the cause, though.
Comment disappeared for spoofing an imaginary corporate trademark entity?
And at that is probably far less than it should be given the magnitude of their crimes there and the horrendous abuses of power over the past century.
see my gentle reminder
If only it was so simple Richard.
There were those that literally fucked me, and those that helped me.
Those that gagged me, and those that gave me a love of history and language and art.
I admit it, I am just fucked up. What I do, is cling to Art and Beauty. That’s what works for me.
Rush, Newt, Karl and Jabba the Hut are off limits? But my whole theory of the inbreed GOP is the Men are Dumb but ok looking Bush, Quayle, and or XXX, look like Potatoes and somewhat smart.
They may be Angry or they maybe Compassionate Conservatives either way we get screwed.
The XXX ones are the brains the ok looking ones make Chris Mathews swoon.
***MODNOTE: NO insulting terms based on weight***
Wouldn’t say you are particularly fucked up compared to most folks. I understand what you are saying about cherishing the gifts you have received and those who gave them. My statement really reflects on institutions and those in charge rather than all of the individual people.
The Pope’s job is really in trouble then? I don’t see German Cops looking the other way once something like this gets public.
Start with small details then work up to a rant?
Now that would be interesting to see. Doubt they could get him extradited, since the Papal See is an independent country. Of course, it would cut down dramatically on the Pope’s travel and outreach.
The Pope’s a head of state, remember. I don’t see what the Germans could do as far as a prosecution goes. Not that it wouldn’t be a huge embarrassment.
Have to agree, though it would be entertaining to see them issue a warrant for his arrest. Doubt that would ever happen, but it would be nice to see a little accountability, if only symbolically.
I think America and Germany are the Church’s big cash cows the other countries break even or get charity.
A scandal in Germany will hurt the Pope’s budget and with a recession going on the Cardinals would be smart to encourage him to retire for health reasons.
Maybe they could say he had a stroke as the cover story why he leaves. Historically the church cares about money and political power above all.
For the Pope or the Germans…? Or both…? ;-)
Freeze the church’s assets in Germany pending a criminal investigation which won’t happen until the Pope testifies? Think of it like a mob case. I admit I have no idea about German law but I’m sure they can freeze assets.
So let me just tell you all;
When you find that YOU are the object of Ibrahim’s sacrifice, you don’t take to it kindly, regardless of which branch it happens, Christian, Muslim or Hebraic.
*findsdefiantpunkrockvoiceagain*
Ptah!
I rather hope you’re right, but I think this Pope is just arrogant enough to bring the whole cathedral down with him.
I think Ireland has historically been rather a cash cow as well and maybe Poland. I am not really sure about the rest of Europe. Austria is quite prosperous and seriously Catholic as well.
Probing abuses from the Inphallible one?
Inconceivable!
Hi Margot
Bravo, sir! Always had issues with that particular episode in the Bible, as well as the wanton abuse of Job.
Well, I am Baha’i… Are ya including Moi…? ;-)
The abused kids being sacrificed to protect the Pope’s Money/Reputation? Are are you speaking closer to home?
I don’t know — it would be rather a huge mess trying to freeze the Church’s assets.
I’d only see it happening if the Germans come up with something totally & un-spinnably damning. Which they still might.
Agreed!
He really is a rather major league asshole on many levels, isn’t he? the other cardinals had to know this when they elected him. Makes you wonder what they were thinking. Unless of course they used Diebold machines.
The proper response to anyone, including a deity, who says “kill your kid for me” is FUCK YOU, Jerk!
Heck, look up Formosus and the ‘cadaver synod’. (Formosus died in 896 and was dug up and excommunicated in 897. Papal political machinations, apparently.)
Conflict of interest, much?
I would say, especially to a deity. The church has far too much to answer for on these issues and I fear no one will ever really be held accountable.
Grownups testifying to abuse as kids on tv and the Archbishop who sets policy and assigns Priests to parishes assigning the abusive priest to a job where he would have contact with kids after his treatment.
Prisons need Priests the Pope could have sent him there.
If the German Media picks up this story and after the American and Irish scandals I think they will a good personal story with tears and a memo or two should be enough.
I know squat about Bahai.
He was John Paul’s Head of Orthodoxy or some job title like that he was the enforcer of the rules but maybe not the craziest Right Winger among the Cardinals. The Cardinals knew exactly who they voted for.
Frankly, the proper response would have been to immediately convene a church trial, defrock and excommunicate each and every one of these priest and then to turn them over to the local civil authorities for prosecution. Anything less makes the church directly culpable.
At least some scholars think that he failed the test – he would have passed it if he’d said something like ‘hell, no, I’m not sacrificing a human being’.
Here’s a good primer…! ;-)
There are many interpretations & theories about the meaning of the Akedah.
He was the head of the Inquisition (whatever its fancy name is). You are correct that he was selected because he is a far right extremist and the conservatives in the church hierarchy had had entirely enough of liberation theology and the like.
there is some discussion of this over at emptywheel in this thread.
The Germans are working pretty hard at doing in Scientology at the moment for reasons such as it not being democratic, secrecy, financial exploitation and abusive treatment of its adherents. Test case?
Certainly Irish rates of giving to the church would have been very high historically, though I’m not sure the population was ever large enough to contribute much as a proportion of the total Vatican budget. I can check, though…
Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, used to be the Holy Office.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cadaver_Synod
Ok you win Borgias, Pope Joan you got me beat on craziest Pope story. I bow before your scholarship.
Yes, the PoPe is being set up, just like he was “sort of” a Nazi… This guy was one of the most politically astute, avaricious Cardinals hanging his cassock in the luxury rooms of the Vatican. Just like the cardinals in the middle ages cut deals with friends and threatened rivals with those members of the “College of Cardinals” who could assist them with their ascension to ‘infallibility” because when no one can tell you you’re wrong, life is just Teh Awesome.
Not to mention Ratzi the Nazi has been pushing a hard right line for years both as a guy wearing a low-level funny hat, right up to the ultimate funny hat… and controlling zillions of dollars after Citizen’s United (do I need to say that Scalia is an Opus Dei insider?) to try and influence politics in the US (wanna bet Bart Stupak gets a PAC contribution from some Ratzi-controlled slush fund).
So yeah, if Nazi-boy Ratzi is responsible for clergy diddling of little boys and then playing hide the offending clergy in new hunting grounds, I’m guessing that this should all fall on him. And Hard. Fucker.
[weary,yet resolute]
The World, much less Americans, doesn’t need ideas at this point. The world needs action, and action for the folks who make the world go around, not the financiers and lauded noble CEOs and such.
The sowers of seeds, the makers of cloth, makers of tiles, makers of things are the best bet, not the makers of CDSs CDOs, crazy betting.
True I wonder what the church does if they not the Cops catch a Priest stealing or Murdering someone? Given their influence in many countries the Church can get Priests sprung quicker than a Mob Lawyer and bought judge.
After all not many Cops will arrest a Priest unless he is caught red handed.
VERY clever, dd.
OK, I need sleep. Niters, all.
g’nite thers
Not original, I am afraid. Stole it from somewhere else and it has been around for quite a while.
It was not intended to be but yes maybe it depends how angry the Germans get.
Nighters!
Can I sit by you…
Links and a Diary plus what are the IRS rules about churches and politics?
It is getting kind of crowded lately. 8-)
Sounds good, things.
Nite nice seeing you again.
We are friends, yes?
I do have some nice cookies. Come here and sit by me…
It should be at Blockbuster or the library and yes it is a good movie I expected to be depressed but instead I was just angry at the church and Awed by these Women who lived through that abuse.
evening, CE
Can you write about it? A diary here, or would that be too difficult.
Hugs, Kelly.
Indeed, we are all friends here and I doubt Kelly minds all the company.

Sometimes speaking out can bring a bit of closure or liberation, allowing you to leave some of the pain behind. Doesn’t work for everyone, but it helps move beyond the sense of helplessness and isolation.
I’m in Cleveland, SNL is in NYC, most of us are all over the nation. Mrce and I are loving SNL tonight.

no flooding there, I hope CE — Ohio’s been in the news lately
hi Suz
hey ppd — how’s the south south bay tonight?
Didn’t Cardinal Ratzinger head the Vatican committee convened to choose the next pope?
Funny how that worked out.
Kind of like Dick Cheney being put in charge of selecting a vice presidential running mate for George W. Bush…and choosing himself.
Funny how that worked out, too.
Maybe they can have adjoining cells.
Heaven forbid! The Holy One tainted by scandal? The Vat City boys are losing it.
The Pope is a proponent of child molestation and, as King of the World, answers to no man’s law.
How do I know the Pope is a proponent of child molestation? Because the Pope answers to no man’s law.
How do I know the Pope answers to no man’s law? Because the Pope a proponent of child molestation.
Can you think of any other organization that is known to systematically shuttle child molesters around the world in order to keep them in business? A government? A corporation? A school?
The Vatican utilizes a pedophilia-based leadership hierarchy which goes all the way to the top. It’s been that way for at least the last two popes; probably since long before that. By any objective standard, this makes the Catholic Church not a religious order, but an international pedophile ring.
It makes no difference how many priests and other officials were physically involved because ANYBODY who, in any way, facilitated ANY of these crimes — any priest, bishop, or what-have-you who stayed silent for even an instance — is a child molester by any legal or moral standard.
Pedophilia literally defines the Catholic Church. It is what they are. If you give them money, it is what you are.
So far it seems that there will be little criminal prosecution by German authorities against the church as an institution or the pope.
Most cases which came to light are actually quite old and fall in the statutes of limitation (ten years after the eighteenth birthday of the victim). There is some talk of expanding the statutes of limitations, but of course that wouldn’t be retroactive.
The R-C church isn’t a law enforcing organization (Thank God!), so ignoring past crimes of their members or a lack of investigations isn’t a crime either.
But the church has shown that if ethics, empathy and common decency on one hand and the interests of the hierarchy on the other hand clash, the interests of the clerics will win. That isn’t illegal, but this tone deafness, this utter ruthlessness is bad when you want citizens to stay members of the R-C church and pay church taxes.
The German states will not dismantle the R-C church, but the R-C church may succeed in alienating so much of their membership that they’ll turn themselves into a sect. In a time were the Central Committee of German Catholics and even the bishops of Hamburg and Vienna question obligatory celibacy, the pope still refers to celibacy as a “valued gift”. Most people are well aware that the first reaction of a lot of the upper hierarchy wasn’t empathy with the victims, but defensiveness and conspiracy theories.
The contrast in regards of consequences between the former head of the Lutheran church Bishop Käßmann (not 48 hours after her DUI she resigned from all her offices) and R-C priests who were assigned parishes after serving prison terms for child molestation is astonishing.
Before the scandals broke there were already roughly one hundred thousand German Catholics leaving the church per year, this will most likely rise. The “political” views of even devout church goers and the “party line” of the Vatican keep drifting apart, these scandals and especially the reactions of the hierarchy accelerate this schism.
PS: Minister Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger is “liberal” in the European sense of the word. In American terms it means market-fundamentalist but socially liberal.
PRECISELY!
The Catholic Church is the world’s largest, wealthiest and most thoroughly lawyered pedophile cult.
I say this as a gay ex-Catholic who has seen its dark heart.
Ratzinger’s previous position within the church had recently been renamed. In earlier times it was known as “The Office of Inquisition.” Cardinal Ratzinger had also been nick-named “God’s Rottweiler”.
Hey, WTF did you expect from the guy who ran the renamed Office Of The Inquisition before becoming Pope? The Catholic Church is gradually being exposed as a haven for pedophiles. They have been put out of business in parts of Canada by $$$ settlements over abuse claims, and the latest events should, hopefully, advance this trend.
Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. The older I get, the more I know that this is absolutely true.
