By now most of you have probably heard about Constance McMillen, the lesbian student who wanted to take her girlfriend to the prom, and her high school’s Solomon-like solution to this embarrassing dilemma:
With the backing of the ACLU, McMillen fought an Itawamba County school board to be able to take her lesbian partner and wear a tuxedo to the Itawamba County Agricultural High School prom….
The school board responded Wednesday by announcing they were canceling the entire prom, scheduled for April 2.
Yes, that’s right – rather than accommodate one gay couple by allowing them to have the same prom experience as everyone else, the school took prom away from everybody. But hey, it’s only prom, I’m sure most students don’t care about it at all. It’s not a big deal like, say, health care…
Employees at Catholic Charities were told Monday that the social services organization is changing its health coverage to avoid offering benefits to same-sex partners of its workers….
Starting Tuesday, Catholic Charities will not offer benefits to spouses of new employees or to spouses of current employees who are not already enrolled in the plan. A letter describing the change in health benefits was e-mailed to employees Monday, two days before same-sex marriage will become legal in the District.
Phew! That was a close one! Fortunately, they were able to prevent gay spouses from sharing employee health benefits by simply not offering spousal coverage to anyone who doesn’t have it. As Teddy pointed out to me, this is not an entirely new trend:
In order to keep the East High Gay-Straight Alliance from meeting, the school board ultimately banned all non-curricular clubs at public high schools. The board then began to re-define selected clubs as “curricular” in order to allow them to meet.
The Salt Lake City school board was clever enough to find a loophole, but their initial reaction was full nuclear bannination of everything, just like Itawamba and Catholic Charities.
It’s amazing and sad. These social conservatives are so full of spite, they hate gays so much that they would deprive everybody rather than let Teh Ghey have even the tiniest scrap of what everyone else has – or see our military start recruiting at Supermax prisons rather than let gays serve openly. Hell, it’s probably only a matter of time before the religious right tries to ban sex and marriage just to allay the nagging suspicion that somehow, somewhere, a homosexual might be having a good time.
Sadly, this spiteful streak is not limited to homophobia. Remember the fight over Obama’s stimulus bill, when Republicans were up in arms because it had all this money for stuff like unemployment insurance and food stamps? Never mind that those are far and away the most effective ways to pump money back into the economy. No, God forbid we should ever give money to those people that they haven’t earned with the sweat of their brow – like derivatives traders.
Or how about when Republicans claimed that undocumented immigrants would benefit from the health care reform bill? Or S-CHIP? Or the stimulus? All lies of course, but the same sick mindset: It’s better to let everybody suffer than to do something good for those people.
As I said back at my place a couple of months ago:
It’s sad, really. If you told America that for every dollar it gave to a homeless guy it would get two dollars in return, it would still walk right by him and tell him to get a job.
It’s not just “I’ve got mine, fuck you” that’s dragging this country down; it’s also “I don’t care if I get mine, as long as I get to say fuck you.”

Exactly.
“Whether I have mine is largely irrelevant, as I get so much joy from denying you yours!”
Evening, Eli!
Would you like to partner up with me on my “Give me $10 to take $5 from a gay guy” business venture?
Evening, egreg!
…the Itawamba County Agricultural High School prom….
goats welcome?
Meet you in Sacramento! Let’s fleece some closeted GOP lawmakers.
Hate-filled right wingers have no shame at all. It must be an amazing thing to be so wicked and yet be able to sleep soundly at night after spending a day torturing the innocent.
“I don’t care if I get mine, as long as I get to say fuck you.” You know, I’m still trying to figure out at what exact point this country became inhabited by this seemingly unlimited pack of hyenas? On the one hand, many people in this country will stick their hands in their wallets when others in other countries are suffering – but HERE? Forget it. It’s Dickensian Darwinism all the way.
…be able to sleep soundly at night after spending a day torturing the innocent.
a/k/a “getting a workout”.
Now watch this drive.
Constance McMillen’s classmates heartened me, though. Even those who “oppose homosexuality” as articles put it, weren’t opposed to her attending. They just think everyone is making too big a thing of this, and — oh yeah! — they want their prom. It seemed like it was really hard for any media to find actual classmates opposed to having the two young ladies attend as each others’ dates. So, yay, young Mississippians…
Asking private organizations to foot the bill for a “prom” from which Constance and her girlfriend can be barred smacks of the private academies set up throughout the South as part of massive resistance to desegregation.
The social conservatives might hate you Eli and Teddy too but they love a guy who got in the hot tub with the 15 yo girl. You should both be good Mormon Republican state legislators in Utah and you could get applause from the rest of the repups.
It really is a good thing that we are not a Christian country because some of this stuff just wouldn’t fly….like, oh, Do Unto others….Or, Judge not, maybe.
No kidding. What’s more, I can sort of understand the first attitude – not caring about people we don’t know or don’t like as much as we care about ourselves is pretty normal. The latter attitude really does seem to be a real one in America, and unless there’s some serious anger behind it, I really don’t understand how someone could think that way. Isn’t it better that both you and the person(s) you dislike get what you need?
It also gives whichever group is canceling things the opportunity to have a scapegoat though. It becomes, “See! We told you you would suffer because of gay-marriage/Teh Ghey/abortion/whatever! Look at what they made us do!”
That’s an improvement over Salt Lake City, where the AP story had a bunch of “Thanks for ruining everything, gays!” quotes.
That is just vile.
Well, they certainly know how to do that. I had actually thought we had made some progress.
I think I recall a similar incident a few years ago. When one person fucks up in prison, it usually has ramifications for all the inmates, but these young women didn’t even fuck up, and they punish all the
studentsinmates. So the only way to get rid of Eli is to ban everybody, from everything, forever?
It would certainly be effective. Unless I found a loophole – I do know some pretty good lawyers.
Well, to Republicans that probably constitutes a “privately-funded prom chaperone”.
I see this as one more example of the belief in some parts of the country that “The United States” was not such a great idea and except for sucking up their share of taxpayer dollars, they’d really rather go it alone..or perhaps partnering up. Right now, I’m thinking Texas might find agreeable what’s happening in Utah in terms of the ‘criminalization of miscarriage’ legislation that was signed into law this week. Perhaps they’d like to form some sort of “Republic of the Four Corners” or something..
Maybe. Yeah. Hi ya.
Here is an actual on-topic article by Marc Ames on the same phenomenon that Eli (curse his name!) is talking about:
Spite the Vote
anybody else smell something?
Aloha, Eli…!
There is still some hope for the South…
One rotten manzana spoils the whole village.
Whoo, boy.
Something rotten?
It is OK if you are a Republican (especailly in Utah)
Garn admits paying woman
…It also explains the popularity of reality TV.
Aloha, CTut!
Well, that depends on whether *all* the students are invited.
Because they have open hearts? That would be nice. But, again, we smell something. I think. ((Sniff?)) Smells like a ……?
Exactly…who can attend? Maybe I’ll get a tux.
I put the Texas school book committee and this incident in the same category. I don’t see ignorance or incompetence but rather a kind of anti-competence at work. These are people who take the core mission of an organization and stand it on its head. It used to be that bigotry was something to be ashamed of but more and more we see groups revel in it. And why not? In a society that can’t be bothered to investigate torturers or trillion dollar banksters, let alone prosecute them, why should your ordianry barnyard bigot feel bad?
And you…how ya’ doing?
“..and I would ask our fellow colleagues that our hearts might be open,”
I guess in Utah, you can keep your heart open for an adult man who paid an underage girl not to blow the whistle on him, but if you are that underage girl, and you get pregnant – nope. No open heart for her. No siree.
Where’s Molly Ivins? Can you think what she would be doing to the TX Board of Education? Or to the seceding Gov Perry who would like to be Pres? Where are the voices?
Isn’t that nice? It really was all Eve’s fault…she made him eat that apple….
Don’t overlook the important parts of the Utah-GOP-in-the-hot-tub-with-a-fifteen-year-old girl:
1. He paid her $150,000 in hush money.
2. They were *naked*
Nothing explains reality TV shows.
Well, maybe that a lot of folks don’t understand that just because you can do some thing, doesn’t mean you should do that thing.
TKK!
Pretty good.
I once dressed in drag for a Halloween Dress Up day at work at a stupid insurance place. People didn’t even recognize me at first. I had a fedora. A mustache and a heavy suit jacket. When people asked me the hell I was dressed as, I said, Let’s just say, I’m in the insurance business. It was a hoot. (And, yes, let me say once again, I’m weird.)
That’s a mighty expensive dip…! ;-)
I retain some hope that younger generations will eventually render moot many of the arguments we’ve heard all our lives.
She wanted “to be able to take her lesbian partner and wear a tuxedo to the Itawamba County Agricultural High School prom….”
She had a homosexual agenda.
I was just telling my son just how much I admire him for standing up honestly to who he is and how he wants to live his life.
There are some of the younger generation who are standing on the shoulders of those who have fought before them and who fight still.
re the picture/bust up top:
Merlin Olsen must have been *way* older than 69 when he died earlier this week:

The number 2 is why he paid her the number 1.
Oh…..making me feel old. I always liked him. Growing up.
Couldn’t pay me enough.
Kudos to your son and to his supportive mom. The importance of that support cannot be overstated.
Reminds me of the old wisdom of LA Gov Edwards…no one will care unless they find me in bed with a dead girl or a live boy…We love a good example.
How will Utah ever get along without Garn as one of its elite representatives? Run Garn, Run!
The nineteenth of March cometh quickly (like Garn in a hot tub with a 15 year old employee).
You mean like going with her partner?
I’ll take “Naked 15-year-old girls in hot tubs with Republican Congressmen” for $150,000.00, Alex.
Teddy Partridge!
I’ll take the naked 15 yr old in the hot tub, hold the Republican Congressman.
Well, since you’re the Kenosha Kid and not the Kenosha Republican Old Prevert, I guess that’d be alright.
Will they stop talking about Massa now?
I am shocked that you could even suggest such a thing!
(I am a Democratic Old Prevert, thank you very much)
In Canada we don’t have school-supported proms. So sad, I know. It just doesn’t strike us as a good way to spend PUBLIC education funding. We buy microscopes for our science labs instead.
Kids here still arrange grad parties, and it seems to me to be a good way to celebrate your new status as an independent adult — especially when you consider the possibility of something like this happening. The kids at this Utah school should just grow up, rent a ballroom somewhere and arrange their own grad party. (Assuming that they’re less bigoted than the school board.)
I love to love him.
Thanks, Eli. You da bomb.
That’s Merlin? I thought it was Nostril-damus.
Thanks, and you’re very welcome.
Rat, that smells. ;)
Who? The Republican-owned network talking heads? Ferget about the Godfearing Republican, he’s done been forgiven. Bring on the Massa!
I knw that was a rhetorical question.
I am sure that Glenn Beck is booking Garn this very minute!
No, because he’s a Dem and one Dem even thinking about sex with other adults is worse than a billion Republicans actually having sex with teenage prostitutes (or ponies).
I know….boys will be boys…
Oh, another Friday night, and I got some funny buddies…..
Go ahead. Sing it in your head. Or out of your mouths. :)
Only if he is not a Socialist Christian
Yeah, I know. Sometimes the low-hanging fruit is just TOO tempting.
Yep, I knew I should have gone to bed when there was a lulll….
I know you love temptation. Saw earlier that you and SD were watching the Lady Gaga and Beyonce video.
Did you share with Bob? What did he think about it?
So true..
From the title, I expected a story about the other Taliban
http://abcnews.go.com/WN/Afghanistan/abused-women-afghanistan-helped-secret-shelters/story?id=10074409
Eh, tomorrow’s another day.
Sorry about putting that song in your head, but it could have been a worse one.
(or ponies).
a Senate-level-only republi-perk…
Bless you. Supporting those who choose to live authentic and honest lives is absolutely essential and one of the greatest gifts we can give to our children.
They’re also less likely to become Republicans, which is a great gift for *everyone*.
Thank you. It’s really easy. More people should try it. *g*
But he can spill the beans on the corruption of Utah Republicans…
Bob and I mostly discussed the production values, the movie references, and product placement. Also, Bob wanted to know why my pickup doesn’t have “Pussy Wagon” painted across the back.
Might be where the expression “pony up” came from.
*heh* As an expat, born in Edmonton, you’re mixing the stories up… The prom not to be is in Mississippi and the 15 yro girl was skinny dipping in an Utah hot tub…! ;-)
Are they all Mormons like Beck?
LOLLLLLLL
I love Bob.
Oh dear, Friends, The trials of the times and the vigor of your cleverness have worn me out….I must take my rest til the dawn. Cheers, and sleep well. B
Probably! I know Glenn is great corruption exposer and this is about exposing so this is right up his darkened alley.
So do I…! Particularly if Bob took a bite outta crime right about now…! ;-)
He makes me so sick I do not like thinking about his alley wherever it leads.
Peaceful dreams to you, sweet pea.
Aloha, M’dear…! Are ya gonna post this on your marquee…? *g*
I think I’m starting to heave to the left a bit myself. Unless I get a second wind later, I’ll see y’alls tomorry.
Sweet dreams, RevBev.
Splendid evening to you, demi.
Thank you, and to you too. You’re just such a doll, Rat.
Nice, Thanks. Those UCCs; that = Wright as I recall.
Aloha…! ;-)
Another doll!!!
Thanks…that’s all folks….maybe. ;)
Safe bet in the Republican rewrite of the New Testament Jesus will be less missionary and more misanthrope.
*heh* How true…
That’s one of the best and funniest reads I’ve gotten to in decades.
It’s spot on, and the snark runs high.
Thanks for sharing the link. *G*
I hold out the same hope, mostly because I live in a conservative city in california that allows students who are gay to have a social club at the high schools. My twenty year old also couldn’t care less what an individuals sexual orientation is. This will be a non issue with the upcoming generation. There will be those who are taught ignorance but on the whole I am hopeful.
Btw, apparently these neoliths have never heard of teh google, eh…?
Now I smell something, and it stinks.
At some point in time recently we elected some guy who said that he would support and defend the Constitution, and somewhere in there is some silly amendment about treating everyone equally. Even Gays, especially Gays, whom he incidentally got lots of money from to run his campaign for some office he was running for.
Does anyone remember who that guy was? Is he still around? Just wondering.
There are a lot’s of rational people living in Texas, how did the mouth-breathers seize control of the Board of Education? Seems like they’d be the sort of people who favor home-schooling anyway.
He went AWOL right after he was sworn in for duty…! 8-(
We can’t expect politicians to remember what they promised during the job interview (unfortunately).
He swtiched sides.
missing in inaction?
He was always a corporate shill, it’s just that he spent so much time campaigning and so little time serving we never noticed.
Sure, but being a corporate shill doesn’t really require you to be an asshole to gay people. I don’t think the corporations really care all that much one way or the other.
*heh* MII…! ;-)
You’re right, it isn’t relevant. Guess he reneged on some promises just for the sake of consistency.
Gregg Levine is upstairs!
Late Night: March Madness
Exactly, gay folks are consumers too. As far as corporations are concerned the more money the better.
Practice makes perfect.
This is what happens when a society allows anti-social propaganda to be disseminated 24 hours a day using the most powerful mind-changing technologies ever invented: television and radio. Any country that lets a Fox News Channel (or a super-syndicated Rush Limbaugh show) continue to broadcast is abdicating its responsibility to keep basic societal cohesion functioning, in order that the next generation inherit some reasonable facsimile of the benefits the current one now enjoys.
Over the next several decades it will become painfully obvious that the simplistic doctrine of “freedom of speech” became inadequate when confronted with the hazards of uncontrolled electronic broadcast media, just as the doctrine of “freedom to bear arms” was incapable of making wise decisions when powerful semi-automatic weapons were abundantly available and affordable to any lunatic or criminal who wanted to own them.
We finally have to grow up as a nation and realize that our republic is trying to function in the 21st century while following 18th century rules. That plan is failing badly. Something has to change.
Ralph, what’s failed is the part of the people holding their elected’s responsible for their actions.
What’s failed is the lack of we the people stopping the onslaught of a corporate takeover of our government, legislation passed to HELP them corporations, and the final onslaught underway to eliminate ANY efforts on the part of the government to provide services to its citizens.
We have facism, full bore, and its intent is to ensure that any and all services available, be they healthcare, Social Security, public education, and local fire and police and any OTHER civil services, that they are privatized.
It’s called class war, hoss.
Welcome.
We the people are losing, badly, too, by the way.
What does the term “Teh Ghey” signify? I’ve seen the term “teh” too often to be a simple typo.
