What’s on your mind?
aloha, Suz…!
Good evening, Suz!
Most excellent selection, M’dear…! ;-)
hey suzanne! have agreat night..I’m off to watch idol!
aloha ct — how’s paradise tonight?
For LisaD @ LaFiga – I’m Coming Out – Beyonce.
hey starbuck — how ya doing tonight?
hey lisa — i was watching lost and just got back to the lake. always a pleasure to see ya
hey mr why — how’s your patch of earth tonight?
Wide awake for a change. Spent all day relearning digital color management. Now I know less than I did before, which wasn’t much either!
How you doin’? Raining a bit, looks like.
A bit chilly by my standards…! Btw, Mahalo for your kind comment at the Seminal…! *g*
had some gnarly hail yesterday — video up at my place along with some pics…. was wicked cool for a weather geek like me. token, bailey cat, and i are staying close to the fire — tis 36 outside and drizzling
my pleasure dood. your writing just keeps getting better and better — and i learn from each one of your diaries.
Hola!
We had snow and a bit of sleet. Tiny amounts, only.
hey kelly — how’s denver tonight?
Ah! My sweetie just brought me a glass of wine!
Aaah….
You would love my brother. Ever since he was a kid he has been obsessed with the weather and geography. Now he owes a chart company. He used to call all over the globe to find out the weather in different places. Now that he has the tubes he is in pig heaven.
Token and Bailey are actually occupying the same area…? ;-)
all those years ago
That’s one of my favorite songs, Suz. Thanks.
My nominee for worst cover of all time: Frank Sinatra singing While My Guitar Gently Weeps in front of a big band. Really awful.
hey mary mac — how’s sac tonight?
one day i wanna have my own weather station and upload weather data to weather underground or one of the other sites.
they keep the stove between them ct
Clear skies. All my complaints are minor compared to friends & family.
hey bct — how ya doing?
*shrudder* that beats shatner hands down….
Ah am actually in San Diego right now. It’s balmy!
Hey! Not to bad mouth the Chairman of the Board. Bad for the health!
Suz, this is the best. Thank you so much.
minor is good mr why :) ya got any more tunes?
Sac is cold. I think it may rain later.
i figure i’ve played enough frank here that i’m allowed that one (laughing) frank was good but some of his choices were not
san diego? i didn’t know your travel territory went this far west. do ya get to travel to portland too?
Yep. But when he was good, it was mesmerizing.
hey margot — thanks. how’s ohio tonight?
hiya Suz, firegods
hey ppd — how’s the south south bay tonight?
San Diego is where our corp hq is. So, sad, but no PDX in my regular travels. :(
double crap
pretty cold tonight – but rain’s coming which should warm up a bit
We were in 6th or 7th grade when “Strangers in the Night” came out, and us kids thought it was hugely funny and mockable.
PDX now has the distinction of being the unhappiest city in the US.
Shit! I’m fucking depressed over that news.
Back to the wine:
There goes all my trials and tribulations’
Sinking in a gentle pool of wine….
-JC Superstar
That happens to be one of my favorites. But then I’m in my 70′s.
ohmystars my friends and i did the same thing — and my mother adored mr sinatra — learned to mock the chairman when the little woman wasn’t around (laughing)
i didn’t hear that — what is it based on?
wine
Hi PPD and everyone. Sunny, 55 I think was the high today. That’s like the high this year so far.
doobie, doobie dooooo ….
That was before the Doobie Brothers and that alternative rock ‘n roll your own good time, eh Margot?
Last night on Countdown, Dennis Kucinich continued to insist that he would not vote for the Senate health-care bill without a public option. Tonight on Countdown, Markos Moulitsas of DailyKOS.com called for Kucinich to be primaried for that “unconscionable” stance — it’s at 4:15 into that video.
Ta ta – early day tomorrow.
Smooches on ye pups! *poof*
hey wigwam — how ya doing?
i wondered what the hell was going on when i saw him on countdown tonight.
They didn’t call the best American popular music male vocalists of the 20th century — the king, and the chairman of the board, for nothing.
g’nite kelly
I worked in a major recording studio when Sammy Davis Jr came in to do a Pontiac commercial (Remember Pontiacs? Nice car!) based on the Rubber Tree Plant song he was on the charts with. (Never end a sentence in a preposition. Now I did it!). It was awful. The reception room had all the little Camp followers spread all over the couches and floor. I made myself scarce.
For all you young uns. SDJr was a member of the rat pack, Frankie, Sammy and Dan Martin and a couple others.
that scooby doobie do just lent itself to many many jokes
Oh dear, I’m sorry to have hit on your favorite song so badly! It was in constant rotation on our small town radio station, if that makes it any less egregious.
My older son who is in his 20s loves Sinatra and is very happy when I buy him Sinatra CDs for Christmas.
You mean Strangers in my soup
I think that was Alan Sherman.
To Suz: I’m good, but having connexion probs right now.
how cool starbuck. i remember sammy and pontiacs
woops there goes another rubber tree plant
Hi Suzanne. I’m fine.
I was appalled at both O’Donnell, not for the first time, and at Kos, for the first time. They truly don’t get it. Jane’s going to have to spank them.
connection problems suck bct — on your end or the isp?
Not to worry! I was being a bit sarcastic actually. But I did kinda like the guy. I especially liked his arranger and conductor, Nelson Riddle. He really did a knockout job.
Suz, it’s somewhere in the score of Jesus Christ Superstar, but I don’t remember qute where.
Long time ago, I fear!
…Dan Martin?
*heh* I’m more of a ‘Brat Pack’ gen kinda guy…! You know… Rob,Emilio, Ally, Molly, Judd…! ;-)
I think I liked Kinks, Beatles, Yardbirds, Animals, Stones, and lots of others.
Yeah, I had a pretty jarring moment when I heard Beatles on Muzak, and a co-worker said “Paul McCartney…was he one of the Beatles?” Yes dear. Can you find my glasses for me? Oh they’re on my head? Thank you sweetie…sigh.
Suz — check out your local PBS schedule — they’re flogging the pledge drives this month. The TAMI concert is on again tonight.
Per the Wikipedia:
i guess i’m gonna have to spend some time in the utubes watching JCS to see if i can find it
Yes. I think it’s my wireless. But #&#$ING Qwest doesn’t support anything but the Least Common Denominator wireless.
sweet — thanks ppd
It’s one of my many memories of that studio. One of the guys I worke with went on to do engineering for Michael Jackson. Name of Bruce Swedien. I almost went into a partnership with him.
I coulda been somebody!
Good news, Margot — we can still remember why those punchlines were so funny, can’t we?
double crap that sucks bcgt
I’m well aware of whom comprised the Rat Pack…! I was amused he wrote Dan Martin…! ;-)
Also, Leonard Cohen’s Isle of Wight concert — classic documentary concert films.
dick and dan
No, I misspeeled it.
Damn wine!
It hit ya fast eh…? ;-)
more wine
Tonight’s music vid is so George Harrison — one of my favorite Beatle tunes.
Aaagh! Misspelled misspell too!
And the wine’s all gone. No more pool, and not too gentle either!
thanks ppd — i thought it was great myself. loved the drumming with ringo and phil collins… and wished someone had fixed that dayam mic that kept turning away from george
ain’t no spelling police down here in the comments
we use them for the posts above the comments only
Great Frank
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LIZIBm2QGaM
hey emerson — thats smooth on top of smooth dood
how ya doing tonight?
One of my favorite songs.
Gotta go get some silver spurs someday….
I give up. I’m going to bed, folks.
Good night, all.
Here’s a Brat Pack anthem…! ;-)
g’nite bct — fingers and toes crossed your connection connects better tomorrow
Hey, all,
Wigwam, I was listening to the Norman Goldman show on Air America and learned that Ed Shultz and Bernie Sanders were saying we should hold our noses, extend support for the Health Rape Bill.
Norman was against that idea and suggested mailing postcards, making phone calls via the Whip Congress site. That’s the project my late 80′s parents and I are working on tomorrow. We have to build the mailing list off Senate.gov. as far as I know. That’s a royal pain in the ass……..but, we’re going for it.
Aloha, bct…!
Never seen that vid before. Clapton’s playing a Les Paul Epiphone? Nice harmony with Harrison @ about 4 minutes.
Snowed about a foot last night. Ms. ET has been trying to get down to Kenai for 2 days. Yesterday, the state troopers turned her back at Portage on account of a blizzard in the mountain passes, so she came home. This morning, the avalanches stopped her at Bird Creek. So she went back to Anchorage and caught a plane to Kenai, and rented a car for her week at work down there.
Hi Suz. How are you?
Gave this entire DVD to my parents:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1p5f6TQdEw
hey openhope — how ya been?
hey et — brrrrr
glad ms et was able to figure out how to get down there but geez…
i featured a video from that show here….. love rat pack stuff
I think he sang:
Whoops! There goes another Pontiac car.
I held my nose every time I had to work that commercial. Sammy didn’t have to do that!
But anyway, I did get to say hello. As I recall, he didn’t hear me.
was in september
*oof* That hugs, ET…!
see what happens when you make yourself scarce….
Are you in Anchorage?
BTW, I listened to your work the other day. Well done! Especially the last movement. I hope you record the live performance for us.
Not that brrr – except Ms ET is gone. This winter hasn’t been all that bad. Weird, but not that weird. Some of the wind storms have been really snappy. The wind will die down to almost nothing, then screech back up to max in less than 10 seconds. That’s something I haven’t seen before.
I’m in Wasilla. The town that deserves to return to the utter obscurity it once so richly warranted.
strange wind indeed. how long have you been up there?
We will record it. Thank you. I’m getting to like the last movement more also.
Right! I think I remember you telling someone here before.
Tonight is the night of steady senior moments…..
In the wind? I’m out of it right now.
Or do you mean Alaska. I moved here from Seattle in 1973. To Juneau. I moved to Wasilla from the Butte in 1985.
fuck — i did it again dammit
How did I miss that one? Love the Pack.
night all – be well
sorry — yes alaska i should have been clearer. so since 85 you’ve not had wind behave like that is what i was trying to figure out
g’nite ppd
It actually is quite powerful.
I kept thinking of the modality while listening. Perhaps it was the electronics, but I couldn’t quite place it.
Also, the term “Passagaglia” came to mind, but it didn’t turn out to be that.
Again, well done!!
Suzanne! Cool hail!
Your plants sure look better than mine do..
Suzanne!! You took 100!!! Again!!!!
hey sunny — they are looking pretty shabby today after the hail yesterday. those flowers on the rosemary are pretty flat now….
how ya been?
No. This snappiness in the wind is something new here. I’ve seen it at places in maritime locales, especially around prominent capes, but not here.
Good work!
I’m hoping Kucinich stands his ground and that some other progressives join him.
i swear starbuck, i could not hit it if i was trying to….
I’ll have to send this to my son. Those guys were having so much fun!
Oops! I missed that.
Yeah right! And this time you didn’t even own up to it!
What’s this world coming to?
pinkie swear starbuck — i don’t want to get the 100 — want the congrats to go to ya’ll and not me.
The third movement IS a passacaglia. The fourth is a basic theme and variations format. It may remind you of the kinds of ostinati associated with passicaglias and chaconnes, because of the simple I-IV-V nature of the chordal structure – even simpler than Harrison’s song Suzanne has posted above.
Suzanne Chilly winds a blowin here.
hey bb — bundle up and stay warm dood. how ya doing tonight?
He can see the entire show on you tube. It’s great fun. My mom was a bobby soxer. She used to take a bus from PA to NYC to see Sinatra at Radio City in the 40′s.
cold outside
JUST coming on board here . . THE VID!!!!!
Dayam, Suz . . . *G*
1) GREAT to see Phil Collins banging skins again!
2) Was that Jeff Lynne in the afro and dark glasses on rhythm git?
3) GEEBUZ George swaps licks, REAL lead licks, with Clapton and plays the harmony lead to Eric’s Lead and is HOT on the git!!! Best I’ve ever seen him stretch and go!! Wow!
Great vid, Suz!
Howdy LLN Puppers, wassup? What’d I miss, who’s dissin who, for what and why? *G*
Oops! I did mean the third movement. Theme and variations was the forth. That became obvious as it unfolded.
But with the third, perhaps I am too familiar to the Bach, and it seemed to me not quite, and not a chaconne either. But that’s me.
Part of the problem is I listened way out of order, and of course, a first hearing.
My bad.
OOhh,oohh, oohh, tomorrow or the next day I’ll know what the fuck you guys are talking about because our new high speed internet is connected at the Source but there’s a service call involved to finish the job. Ya ya ya ya!!!!!!!!!!
I hate to see the Rural become connected…and yet.
Oh ok, ok! Forgiven. Buy you a coffee next time we come to the beach!
hey larue — how ya doing
#1 — yup — iirc he can’t drum anymore due to that surgery last year (maybe?)
#2 — i think so
#3 — i wonder if this was the first time they had been together on stage since that whole eric wanting george’s wife thang — the way george looked at eric made me wonder…
Welcome to teh reel toobz! Welcome!
deal!!!
Did two hours hot yoga at 9am then went to a Russian yoga teacher at noon for 1 hour 15 minutes. She teaches totally different postures making it a challenge. Nice asanas I may add. I was challenging my endurance and flexibility. A very nice day as my first session was very smooth.
Suz, pellora just posted another diary...!
Heh heh, first thing I thought!!
“I took your wife!”
“But I got another!”
“She’s hot too!”
It WAS a wierd look . . . but they picked harmony and lead licks and were BOTH really into listening to the other to stay on track . . . best picking I ever heard George do!!
Never seen that clip, either . . . yer good, ya know . . . ;-)
kewl thanks ct
Great stuff!
Thanks emerson, I’ll tell him.
I thought that might be it. Anyway, glad you liked them. It’s sort of scary how dynamic sampled sounds are getting.
Sweet dreams.
Fight Congress.
I hope you can post the recording soon. I kept trying to “hear” the orchestration you were going to use, but I am not that good at such stuff. I don’t get past piano when I imagine music and it’s possibilities.
But it certainly pushed my envelope. Note to myself: Next incarnation study music! Don’t just dabble!
g’nite openhope
Any Pups getting annoyed with the MoveOn, OFA and defeatist Dem’s blasting the progs for holding out on the Senate Bill and Obama’s POS offering?
I’m tired of it, it’s everywhere!
And the false memes are killin me, just killing me.
“We won’t have another chance to pass reform in 20 years or more!”
“Look what happened under Clinton when it failed, we got Bush and RightWing Whacked!”
And NO one (in the MSM) is asking these asshats about the inflated premiums, lack of premium regulation (or any regulation), inflated co-pays and infladed deductibles that will COME with this LEAD (not bronze) level of insurance packaging.
NO one (in the MSM) is asking these asshats to discuss a mandate to purchase from a private company backed up by government legislation and IRS oversight and enforcement for penalty’s for failure to purchase!
NO one in the MSM is asking or discussing how THIS Senate Bill is the opening of the flood gates (on top of Supremes decision on corp funding of elections) towards passing mandatory buy in on anything that will be legislated, NO one in the MSM is talking about how this opens the door wide to eradication of Medicare, Social Security and any other entitlement programs that exist!!!!
Privatized Education, Pups? Right around the corner!!! End of government!!!!
Arrrggh.
So, any Pups tired of these false meme so called liberals that are blowing corporate self serving smoke up our butts?
Back at cha Openhope
george/eric
I’ve made the same note to myself, Starbuck…
I hear it too.
I even hear that liberals hate everything (except themselves!)
Hang in there!
Ok, now that I got THAT out (reading centrist OFA bullshit at HuffPo, know I shouln’t late at night) of my system, what’s the chat? More music?
*blinksinnocently*
got any george/eric/phil/elton up your sleeve dood? edit: crap forgot ringo
THAT’S some nice pickin by George!!
Thanks!!
Nah, yer doooin fine . . *G*
I’m off the politics, it just came pouring out . . . my bad . . lolololol
it don’t come easy
naw just yanking your chain dood
late late nite is where off topic is the topic — if ya wanna talk politics talk politics, or weather, or music, or whatever
THAT one I’ve seen!!! *G*
Great, great show, great album, great vid.
And one of the greatest songs and definitely the BEST version Ringo ever did and was a part of.
*G*
Time is cruel to work with a piano which is not kept going. I thought I had a few pieces I could always play, given a bit of practice. But just a couple of days ago, I started on the Danza #1 of Enrique Granados, one I was certain I would always play, and I couldn’t get past the third or fourth bar! I was always proud of the way I could phrase the middle section, now I can’t even get there.
Not to give up, damn it!
phil
Find something that you know well enough to get you through the piece. Play it enough to get it sorta up to speed. Then try the Granados again. Works for me.
levon
You can play Granados? You’re good. I can play a couple of easy things that don’t require jumping around the keyboard. Or I could when I last tried, anyway.
Loving the weather. No complaints here :-)
Potted rosemarys survived, as did the thyme. Chives are sprouting. Also.
Had the distinct pleasure of photographing Harrison in ’87 for the cover of Guitar Player Magazine. He was one of the most polite most sincere musicians I’ve photographed in over 25 years of working with musicians. Only had about twenty minutes to work with him, but we were all happy with the results.
http://www.peterfigen.com/per_port32.html
Very underrated Bobby Darin
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWhXJjgbzEI
(edit link fixed)
i was surprised at what survived this winter. we had a week of freezing or below and figured those nights in the teens killed off what was still on the deck.
yet the thyme and chives are thriving. i had the rosemary inside during that cold spell.
how cool pfigen. and welcome to late late nite
i love that pic
I met Sal Valentino tonite!!!
Beau Brumme’s, Stoneground, for you kids . . *G*
He hosts an open mic at a local luthiery shop that we played at.
Got all of two songs in on our part!!! lol
But chatting with Sal outside about him, the bands, his music, his RECENT music.
Priceless. What a kewl dude . . . made my year so far!! *G*
And he sang about 4 songs to kick it all off, too!!! Still has the pipes!!
Covered Set ‘Em Up Joe, of all things, and then a Hank Williams classic which now escapes me for some reason, besides doing two of his own tunes from his ’08 cd release.
He’s been back and forth from SF to Sacto over the decades, but settled here now solidly since about ’06 or so I think.
What a trip.
Beau Brummels, Sal Lead Vocal
Another Beau Brummels
Their Classic Everyone Recalls
Sal Sings Again, Valentine’s Day ’09
Sigh, I was 13 with an am transistor radio glued to my ear when these guys broke the raydeo in the Bay Area.
Damn they were good.
dood!!! how forking kewl
A guy in my law school class [UCLA '75] became one of Michael Jackson’s main attorneys. [John Branca].
Needless to say, when the “who contributed how much to UCLA Law School” list comes out, he’s right at the top.
GREAT story, thanks for sharing.
It’s all that I saw, and read, and want to remember about him . . . he was SO gracious, all the time.
What a loss.
hey mauimom — how ya doing tonight?
In that case, whatever you do, don’t watch the second half of this video. (It’s Kos trashing Kucinich for continuing to hold out for a public option.)
Here’s Sal Sangin With Stoneground. Dayan Lynn, Deidre, and Annie Sampson were the best backups eveh!!!
i remember singing along to just a little while listening to it on my transitor radio larue. thanks for the memories
Yeh!!! *G*
time for me to head out folks. been a long day and i’m tired early. i apologize for bailing early.
g’nite all and thanks for the music and conversations tonight
*le poof*
They were telling great stories on his site after Jackson died. Very cool site.
http://www.gearslutz.com/board/bruce-swedien/84996-bob-moog-flips-bruce-swedien-bird.html
Yes, I’ll need to do that.
Actually, I usually revert to a book of exercises to bring my right and left hand back together. When I tried that, I really saw what the problem had become.
Anyway, here’s a damn good interpretation of that dance. He does the middle movement very much as I like to do it, and the opening is quite snappy. A great way to start a recital. Or 12 dances!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24E8-Big5CI&NR=1
He has the hallmarks of studying with the great Alicia deLarrocha.
Hey WW!!!
Yeah, I’ve seen that, I have NO idea where Cenk is coming from, he’s insane given the Senate Bill and Obama’s Plan, which are strictly giveaways and gateways to worse.
I don’t know what these folks are thinking, cuz it’s obvious they are NOT thinking, so I gotta ask who’s paying them.
Because we ALL know, the Senate Bill and Obama’s Plan are giveaways, with HORRIBLE long lasting effects.
And that NONE of the 31 million mandated, or anyone else for that matter, will get REAL good coverage, or care.
Because of all the reasons FDL has shared with us over, and over, and over again and again.
Even I can repeat them off the top of my head now!!! *G*
And I ain’t the brightest burning bush in the field . . . memory wise, that is.
*G*
Thanks so much for the linkie to your photo of George. He was always my favorite.
Thanks Suz for the video. What fun they were having! And how good are they! Wow wow wow I had lots of music I liked back when, and didn’t realize for some time that all the groups were Clapton groups. I didn’t expend a lot of energy learning all the players in the bands, but did know the music I liked!
My contribution: The Traveling Wilburys
I was lucky, I saw a reunion of original Beau Brummels in about ’78 (Sal couldn’t recall what venue neither can I) in SF. Came out of NOWHERE, he said, a couple of nights in a club, and gone. But the night I saw them, pure teenage angst and I was 13 again with an am transistor prowling the fog laden nights of San Mateo with my ear glued to the raydeo . . . . crying for a girlfriend I didn’t have . . *G*
Hi Pel, GREAT vid, thanks for that one, loved that band . . . what a bunch of heroes!!!
Nite Pups, stuff calls, duty awaits in the morning . . . music in my head will keep me up all night no doubt.
Alas, it’s always worth it!!! *G*
suzanne, clearly you need to TRY to get the 100, then you won’t succeed.
It’s very, VERY windy here. I’m waiting for CT’s analysis.
But the sky is incredibly clear, and the stars are luminous.
I too, however, am furious at Marcos, Lawrence O’Donnell and all the others who should know better. Plus I’m kinda tired of writing “why the Senate bill stinks” comments over @ HuffPo.
“I told you so” is not going to be all that satisfying. However, my husband, who gave me shit about this for some time ["you're too negative"] now admits, “you were right.”
I’ve been trying to find this for a long time.
Love is Blue
Well as I live and breathe. pfigen. We actually know each other from Adobe Photography Forum, but you don’t know me as my name here.
Think Portland.
This guy really knows how to shoot and do everything else in photography, even how to make money having fun. (Don’t give away my name please)
I still think of you running some scans for me, but since I am so deep into digital, I don’t think film any more.
Nice to see you here.
Well wigwam, you could search the HuffPo health care threads for my comments and see my efforts to combat [and call out] the OFA/DNC lies.
[screen name is the same over there]. I could use some additional “fans.”
‘nite, Suz!
Wow-haven’t heard that in decades!
Tony
http://www.youtube.com/watch#!v=zAaKt6_1qpE&feature=related
(modnote: is this the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAaKt6_1qpE )
Thanks mod. Sometimes it’s working; sometimes not. Strange.
This reminds one that George is an underrated guitarist. His approach was not one grounded in speed, something us guitar-geeks are addicted to, but rather sound. He was more interested in the textures and nuances associated with ‘stretching the limits’ of the sound one could wring from strings. I think this is why Indian music so fascinated him, it was just so different from the West’s approach. He broke the ground for many others when it comes to incorporating other culture’s musicality and mixing it with our own.
My guess is that this has to be LH. Nice to see you here too. The offer of scans is open ended. Whenever you’re ready I’ll be happy to run a couple off for you.
