FDL Book Salon Welcomes Lewis Maltby, Can They Do That? Retaking Our Fundamental Rights in the Workplace

By: Tula Connell Saturday February 27, 2010 2:00 pm

Lynn Gobbell was fired because her boss didn’t like the John Kerry bumper sticker on her car.

In Colorado, teacher Meg Spohn got the pink slip from DeVry University for complaining about her job on her personal blog.

At Best Lock Company in Indiana, workers are axed for social drinking because the company president believes it’s a sin.
Can Employers do that?

You betcha, writes human rights attorney Lewis Maltby. He’s president and founder of the National Workrights Institute, which he formed after leading the American Civil Liberties Union office on free speech and privacy protection in the corporate world.

Before heading up the Workrights Institute, Maltby had spent time in the corporate world where “learning how to run a productive, profitable company without violating employees’ human rights” became the focus of his life. Right up front in “Can They Do That,” Maltby gets to the crux of the misconception most people have when facing unfair treatment on the job.

Rep. George Miller Says House Democrats Will Pass Senate Bill First On Mere Promise Of Future Fixes

By: Jon Walker Saturday February 27, 2010 1:00 pm

Rep. George Miller (D-CA) is now saying the path forward will be for the House to pass the current Senate bill–unchanged–with the promise of a reconciliation fix later. Which, you know, the Senate Democrats promise they will get around to. Lucy, meet football.

Toyota’s Books of Knowledge

By: emptywheel Saturday February 27, 2010 12:00 pm

A few weeks ago, ABC reported that a former Toyota Product Liability lawyer had accused Toyota of hiding information in product liability suits. The House Oversight Committee subpoenaed his documents and found that they showed Toyota hid internal data recording Toyota testing data, collected in an electronic “Books of Knowledge.” Chariman Towns has written Yoshimi Inaba, President of Toyota Motor Company US, for more information.

Watching the Nolympics: Patriot Act Extended, Health Care Reform Kabuki

By: Jim White Saturday February 27, 2010 11:00 am

Thursday’s developments perfectly sum up the completely ineffective nature of Obama and the Democrats: the Patriot Act was extended and there were hours of staged histrionics on health care reform that will go nowhere.

Merkley, Stabenow Explain Why Bunning Succeeded In Blocking UI/COBRA Benefits

By: David Dayen Saturday February 27, 2010 10:00 am

Jim Bunning got away with blocking an extension of unemployment benefits and COBRA on Thursday night because “coordinated support materialized” among Republicans to help Bunning in his cause, Sen. Jeff Merkley explained in a conference call this morning.

Marc Thiessen Puts Himself Above the Bishops

By: Peterr Saturday February 27, 2010 9:04 am

As a speechwriter, Marc Thiessen plays with words. His comments to justify Bush’s torture regime on the basis of the teaching of the Catholic Church, however, go too far. He better hope his priest doesn’t read the NY Times.

Looking Back at Chile In Light of Today’s Earthquake

By: Ruth Calvo Saturday February 27, 2010 8:00 am

My greatest fear personally is for the Santiago archaeological museum, a priceless collection of pre-Columbian art and mementos. Sadly, the building itself is of stone, a renewal of the monumental architecture period that saw a downtown built of heavy, immense, stone structures. Circling an interior courtyard, the collections are on two stories, with large stairways, heavily built and decorated, many tiles and carved stones. Many of the earthenware remnants of the tribes that occupied the country before Europeans arrived will be easily damaged, and is not recoverable.

Come Saturday Morning: TradMed Motto – “Double Standards R Us”

By: Phoenix Woman Saturday February 27, 2010 6:45 am

Please, TradMed, stop it with the “ooh ooh Obama doesn’t play nice with Republicans” crapola. Bush treated Congressional and Senate Republicans far worse than Obama has so far — as you all know, or should.

Pull Up a Chair: Good News All Around

By: TobyWollin Saturday February 27, 2010 5:00 am

Once upon a time (because all good stories start that way), Aunt Toby “peddled flesh” for a regional staffing service (and no, we are NOT going to discuss the merits and ethics of this right now). This was during a period when the place where I lived (and still live) had gone through what anyone [...]
