Heart Attack & Vine
Poodles!
seabear is very nice.
I like Toro Y Moi. That would make great skating music.
Hi Folks!
This week the hot meal in our house was split pea soup. Made with smoked ham hocks. The secret ingredient was farro. It’s an ancient grain that is a bit like barley. I had it in a soup in a small walled city in Italy. I found a source in San Francisco. I recommend it as a nice substitute for barley since even with fully cooked it adds a bit of crunch to the soup.
Yo!
My favorite Vulcan!
LLAP
For the unemployed, it’s a good day for the blues.
FUCK JIM BUNNING! GOD DAMNED BASTARD!
Dammit all, now I’m lovin the first vid ES . . . minor n modal, I think . . . and the art matches the music.
Sweet!
Now to watch the other one, and join the frivolity . .. ;-)
I’ve never had it, but I looked it up and found lots of recipes for it. Sounds good!
I watched that last night. The only word that comes to mind is surreal.
Dude, didn’t get the chance to say CONGRATS on the Lee Rogers get!
Great work!
I heard it and thought, Old FW/Mac. I knew you would like that.
Gimme NIghthawks At The Diner
Pure Waits, Old School, We Know It.
Gimme It. Gimme OLD School And WELL Known Waits, Please.
YUM! I love split pea soup.
Dude, farro is a simple thickening agent . . . . it’s a starch.
Yer welcome.
Sigh.
Yo what?
Ya mookie . . . . *G*
Yeh, I’m with the FUCK Jimmy Bunning . . . and I am a big old sports oldies fan.
He’s go far beyond sports hero, to soil us humans thoug.
So FTFBunning, indeed.
Emmer, which is known as farro, is a grain.

So be nice.
Huh, one of the few things ES has done that’s new, that I DID not think of old FW . . . till you mentioned it!
Yer startin to mess up my ears and temporal resonance!!!
*G*
Heh, swell me this ya grainered cereal lover . . ..
I know my farro.
:P
Yeah. A lot of fiddles, too.
Love me them strings . . . .*G*
So I’m a grain-o-phile. Shoot me!
If you like like Susanna Vega or Joan Osborne, it’s a folksy pop surprise off the beaten path with “All The Dreamers” by Vancouver, BC artist, singer and songwriter Sarah Marshall. You can hear her at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/sarahmarshall now but she’ll have her new website up at http://www.sarahmarshallarts.com by May 1. My favorites are “This Young Man” and “Salt”:
“Salt
Across the counter I catch a slice of dispute
His lady is pale and scared
No pepper for his plate at least
To keep his fist impaired
Chorus
Oh rainy days in cafe plays
I watch for what we crave
Oh rainy days in cafe plays
I watch for what we crave
A poet sits down who comes here to flirt
makes me nervous in my filly skirt
In here he pays his money
For a chance to pretend
No sugar for his pie at least
To keep his gaze at friend
Chorus
A woman stumbles in boose on her breath
She looks itchy in her polyester dress
Listen as she takes the cake
And check her lips for void
Laced with wrinkled hard earned cash
From lipstick, gum and boys
Pepper will have you tango
For living crimson style
And sugar in pink icing
Will make the princess smile
Liquor will make nothing
Ever your fault
But when it comes to waking
You’ll have to ask for salt.”
Tony Rice was once the best vocal dude for blue and new grass.
He lost his voice.
He’s still the best guitarist and still known as ‘Tony Tone’.
He’s a king of the flat picking, he was the git picker with Grisman’s Jazz music, The Grisman Quintet.
He’s a monster.
I love Tony Rice.
Here’s a bit of his git work, along with one of MY fave songs, Ginseng Sullivan:
Heroes, Sanging.
Boil ya down, add some black strap molasas and cinnamon, a bit of nutmeg, some cinnoman, and you’d be decent to eat.
And I don’t mind sayin so.
*G*
A grain-o-phile…
Takes all kinds.
Thank you. Thank you very much.
What is interesting is just how the station is talking about it.
Rodgers has asked his union to go after Citadel for violating his contract. Ha!
I wish they took it to open court so we could find out the real reason they fired him. When Joe Garofoli talked to him he alluded to management’s “obvious cave-in to some ultra-left and pro-Muslim groups, making it unlikely that I would have ever renewed my contract with the company, anyway.”
He then asked:
So how many advertisers did the station lose because of comments made on your show? Do you believe that contributed in any way to your departure?
Said Lee: “To my knowledge, none.”
That is just revisionist bs. Maybe he is asking about in the last month or two, I was busy. I and my follow bloggers cost them 4 advertisers in 2009 and 28 in 2007. But I hadn’t gotten around to any new work in 2010.
But then when another reporter talked to the marketing manager at KSFO he wouldn’t confirm or deny but just said, ‘We can’t control what ex-employees say”
Big media can hide the reasons. They don’t have to say that Rodgers cost them advertisers. They don’t have to say the the ABC News people complained about him calling them liars and ‘leftist propagandists’.The don’t have to say that he was a sexist pig that offended the women who bought ads on the show. They can just say, “he is no longer with the station, we wish him well.”
My problem is that the media narrative will never be clear. I’d LOVE to get credit for this from the media because it would prove that my strategy works. Hitting them in the wallet is the most effective means to reducing their power. Of course the RW media will say that it was “a Muslim plot” one article said that Citadel’s owner’s name is “Farid” so that is all you need to know. Bigots.
There was no government censorship using my method. The right wing’s precious “free market” worked. The market–the advertisers– said no. The corporation that was running the game actually wanted their assets to earn them money, not cost them money. And because there is no sugar daddy like Scaife, Moon, Murdock or Koche they can dump him for someone who is cheaper.
Everyone in this equation can make up stories about what happened, only if documents become public could everyone see what really happened. I hope it will got to court. Come on Rodger’s Union, take on Citadel! Let everyone know what a disaster he really was for the profitability of the station, how many advertisers wouldn’t appear on his show, how much trouble he was for the network. It probably won’t happen, it might go to sealed arbitration. Too bad. I’d love to read the details.
What you do is lonely and under-appreciated diligence. Credit is yours.
Thanks. One of the best things about having communities and friends in the blogosphere is at least I have a place to talk about this and some people who understand what I’m talking about.
I also love to help others with this. I put together a panel session of myself and the two other groups that used these techniques against Savage, Beck and Dobbs. I think that more people should know how this was done.
I also want to help Color of Change or other groups complete the task with Beck. Right now he is not making money for Fox. NewsCorp is letting Fox run with him as a loss leader because they hope to get political advertising in the fall. I tried to convince the institutional investors to ask NewsCorp “When will Beck make us money?” or “What is your plan for getting back the 81 advertisers that Beck lost?” or “Who is paying Beck’s salary since his advertising revenue is basically zero?”
None asked these questions. I tried to get the media to ask these questions, but they wouldn’t. The whole, “we need quarterly profits” isn’t in effect if you make a decision to lose money on an asset for some other reason. Right wing wingnut welfare distorts the world.
I remember when KGO was just that – KGO. The only real nut-job they had was Jim Eason. That was some time ago.
Edit: Oh, I forgot that colossal prick Bill Wattenburg, who may still be there.
Someday, someone will talk…I hope. I’d love for you to get public credit, lots and lots of loud acclaim for this.
I’d love to read the details too. I so respect your work, and you, spocko.
Thanks. I keep this comment on my desktop. I don’t know it’s providence, but it sounds like soneone who knows what is going on. This was posted in Feb. 2009 after I wrote a letter to the people at Chrysler who Rodgers called liars and ass kissers. I figured that Chrysler would like to know what the host had to say about them and if they wanted to keep advertising on a station who said that your executives “whored themselves out to the automakers union”. (see he really hates unions until he needs one.)
Well…Step right up, then.
;>)
Spocko, I had not heard about Rodgers, but I am immensely gratified at his dismissal, even if in this case, you were only a spectator.
Now let’s go after Sussman. Remember when he was a weatherman? Is he still doing weather anywhere? I never watch local news any more, it’s beyond boring.
Hello All!
I can’t believe I’m just sayin’ hiya at this hour, but, hiya! Margot, Loo Hoo, Kelly and Newt and all. Spocko — we admire your work.
Wattenburg is still at KGO and he’s just as big an ass as he ever was.
I was there the night he brought a disabled firefighter to tears for explaining his city had robbed him of his medical benefits. It may have been 20 years ago, and is still a high-watermark in unforgivable.
Heya Chris!
Thank you. Corporations can hold back all sorts of information.
I had been trying to find out who the funders are for some of the tea party people, but the groups that are funding them don’t have to reveal who their donors are until after they file their taxes. So for events that happened in 2009 I have to wait until 2010 mid year. I can’t tell the media, “This group that was anti-health care reform was funded by Big Health care insurance”
I can’t provide that info to the press at the next event so the press can just say, “this grass roots event…” when it is not.
Hey newt!
How are you?
Wattenburg’s obit will prompt the consumption of at least $100 Cognac and if I’m flush, *$200* Cognac. What a fucking asshole.
Great. The Olympics are on and I have missed so much of it, but I have it going on for the rest of the weekend.
You seeing any of it?
Yes, lots and lots, as it keeps me as far away from Chris Matthews as possible.
Hi Chris and hi everyone, Loo Hoo, ThatGuy, Larue, Newton, Kelly and glyph. We got snow today, again. Our county has a Code Yellow Snow Advisory out, no kidding. We are not smart enough, they think, to tell whether Level 1, 2 or 3 is worse.
We think that it is the best Winter O’s since the year we got married (1975) but, we are too old to think much, anymore! Actually, we loved the speed skating the best!
Well I did have an impact, but just not a recent one.
Sussman is now in the morning spot. He now has 4 hours to say stupid stuff each day. He is a birther, a deather and believes that the government is going to use the Census to use GPS data on people and take their guns.
He is a bigot toward Muslims and works to prevent equal rights toward gays. He is pro-torture. He also denies that humans have anything to do with global warming. He has a book coming out where he “blows the lid off” off of the global warming story.
He is not a nice man.
I thankfully missed Tweety’s latest exercise in TV-buggery, too.
Margot,
Lots of inches tonight — and very beautiful!
You must be so Proud of yourself! You certainly should be.
I like a lot of the sports, but I confess – I am a curling nut.
I cannot explain it, but I love the curling.
Hey, hey! Good to see you, Christine.
I think that Keith Olberman is with his Dad, and they have said that hard choices are to be made.
Ouch…
Big quake off the Chilean coast…
Margot – Yellow snow?
BE SURE NOT TO EAT IT! AAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA! I crack myself up =:-O
Heh! We have the Cleveland Skating Club here — mondo curling going on! mrce watches all the time, me, I don’t understand anything! But it gives me an time to read…
Evening, all-
Spocko, you are the man.
That works out pretty well for our corporate citizens, doesn’t it?
I know it was manipulative, and terrifying, but I appreciate KO putting his take out there the other night.
It was very difficult to watch.
No, Sussman is a crazy son of a bitch. He needs to be hounded off the air.
Loo Hoo! Happy thoughts tonight.
You!
LOL!
Yes, it was. And now I’m scared for Keith.
Wouldn’t you just have to peek out the door to see how much snow there is? Or is this an electricity issue?
Do you know them? P.S. I also read during Cleveland Indians baseball games…
I’m sending best thoughts to Keith.
You mean the rules? As much as someone who lives in perpetual 70 degree weather all his life can.
IOW, not to a certainty.
Lord.
as am i
Me too, it breaks my heart about his Dad. And I have four of my own with horrible health issues.
Oh dear, Christine. Who in your family? Hopefully not children.
It is so hard for us having parents, all in their 80′s. mrce’s Dad will be 90 this year. A WWII Hump Pilot is bright as a star, and healthy as a horse. His mother, pretty much not.
(((((CE)))))
Oh no, Loo Hoo,
All over 85, all great people who lead super lives. AND have great health care I must say!!!!
We just miss the people they were…
You are duly recruited as an official member of the Spocko Squad. Drop me an email. spockosemail at g mail. com
My next letter is going to the US Census bureau. Sussman agreed with a caller who talked about answering the door with his shotgun when a government official came to his house. Yes it was the caller who said it, but Sussman didn’t disagree with him. The last thing the Census bureau needs is people like Sussman staring rumors that the Census is going to be used by Obama to grab people’s guns.
Thanks newt,
We have a lovely fire going, snow falling and can’t quite make ourselves to go bed when it is so quiet and beautiful.
The United States Attorneys office would be the second letter, I presume.
Wow.
♥♥♥
This is telling us whether we’re allowed to drive or not, in the case of a Code Red or Level 3. Then, only emergency personnel are supposed to be on the roads, they’re so bad. (And hospital and nursing home employees, etc.)
Thank you dear — I always want to sit by you.
evening, firedogs
*G*
Welcome, Welcome To The Night Train!!!!
*G*
Wow, Margot,
No codes that we know of here. But I’ll be sleeping most of today!
Just a quick thanks for all you do and have done . . . . Lee Rodgers is gone! *G*
And I thought that I was late to the party…
Oh dear. Sounds horrible.
The collective IQ of the San Francisco Bay Area just jumped 8 points.
Sadly, Loofah O’Reilly visits next week, presaging a dismal return to the mean…
Rachel’s there, did that cause the jump?
Typing too fast. Sussman didn’t disagree with him. He agreed with him.
The caller was talking about having a fire during one of the “spare the air” nights. One of the agencies that enforces that came to the guy’s door to tell him that he could not burn his fire tonight. He bragged about how he answered the door with his shotgun.
Now WHY would he need to do this? To intimidate this person enforcing the enviromental laws.
~~~ModNote: fixed original.~~~
She is, I nearly forgot. We are therefore, fabulous AND smarter.
On the news just now — major earthquake in southern Chile — sparsely populated area 200 miles south of Santiago — 8.5 magnitude
Hi CE — You’re always three hours later than we lucky few, we St. Crispins Day Californiacs
When John Cowan plays the main stage at Berry Fest, it’s been said that the power on the fest site goes out due to the overdose of the electricity when women and girls hit the bathrooms and use the curling irons.
Course, you’d need to know WHO John Cowan is, who NewGrass Revival is, and more.
But just imagine heroes and gals primping up for them, at a fest . .*G*
If you live in town it’s not bad. You just run to the store if you hear there’s a storm coming. If you’re out in the sticks, it can get pretty hairy.
There was a man who got snowbound in his rural home a few winters ago. His pump froze so he had to use snow for water, then he couldn’t get wood for the stove anymore because the snow was so high. When the sheriff didn’t see smoke coming out of the chimney he got worried and they finally got to the man. He was in the hospital for a few days.
Here’s the USGS link http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eqinthenews/2010/us2010tfan/
Holy hannah! That is huge! The sesmic scale is logrymithic so it’s a lot bigger that a 7.5. The 1989 in SF was 7.1.
Fer cryin out loud, DON’T LISTEN OR WATCH!!!!!!
;-)
Oh Brooklyn, Brooklyn…
:P
USGS preliminary measurement is 8.8 — that’s HUGE.
Did I Say BAM?!?!?!
*G*
Wow. Good sheriff. Being single, I always wonder how folks in the sticks do it in harsh winters.
SoCal is safe that way, at least.
I bow, hoss . . . *G*
You hit 100 in your sleep! Congratulations, CE.
YOU are! ;-)
Yup. 8.8 No real info yet that I’ve seen.
Any Pups Up?
I just check for tsumani warnings. None for California or Alaska yet.
local tsunami warnings for west coast south america and islands due west & northwest
There was a 7.3 off Japan earlier today.
I said that first, second or third, dang it.
;-)
Yeah, but I ignore all your comments.
Oh, that was cold!
some climate scientists hypothesize that huge methane releases may result from increased major off shore seismic events.
Night, pups.
cold!
what?
nite loo hoo
Yer not cold, but yer kewl . . . ;-)
Hey, that stuff in that diary today? That was serious.
And for the record, I wasn’t trying to get you to pile on. It was an organic response, and I appreciate your reply.
Great, now Godzilla’s going to wake up.
Night loo hoo!
Lordy.
Not Panama!
Que?
cat-box…
whew.
Collapsed in Santiago? Isn’t Santiago a minor metropolis?
night all – be well
Tooo long ago . . . sorry, I am truly beyond your point.
What a difference a day makes????
*G*
Santiago is the capital of Chile
OK, then a question.
If you need a thickening agent, why choose any one of arrowroot or cornstarch or potato flour over the others?
Panama! That was where John McCain was born!
Good. We’ll get more answers about Toyota defects from Godzilla than we did from the CEO.
In the book the science of cooking the describe the various properties of the thickening agents. Some work better cold others cooked. I use arrowroot instead of corn starch because I’m allergic to corn.
Okay, I came back to life. I have a condo in Panama, and it’s on the 28th floor, spocko. Between global warming and earthquakes, I just don’t know! Panama hadn’t had any earthquakes to speak of, but the building was still built to CA earthquake specs. I’m sure my tenant is fine…
I need that book. Nice ref, thanks.
Almost all the cooking chemistry knowledge I have, I got from Alton Brown.
Interesting. I usually think flour for flavor, and cornstarch for clear stuff like sweet and sour.
Oooo, foodies – check this out…
nite you guys
It won’t let me take the quiz…
Good morning, pups. It’s Blow and Herbert, as Gail Collins is off today. Mr. Blow has been to the movies. In “Tyler Perry’s Crack Mothers” he says recent data do not support the ubiquity of black crack-mom characters in the movies. Not any more than data supported “Cadillac-driving welfare queens” in St. Ronnie’s day. Some things never change, no matter how much they should. Mr. Herbert considers “Paterson on the Brink.” Now that the bottom has fallen out of Gov. David Paterson’s election bid, the question remains: Is he still suited to be governor?
Here they are.
The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are ready and I’ve got blueberry pancakes this morning, with blueberry sauce. My head is full of abso-blooming-lutely nothing this morning, so I’m going to get a second cup of tea and hope for a cogent thought later. Have a great day.
Good morning.
Mid-Hudson didn’t get as much snow as NYC, but there’s plenty & it’s wet & heavy. My electricity has been OK, except for occassional off & then back on. Still, where’s spring?
There’s not much sign of spring here either, as it’s below freezing. This is the coldest winter we’ve had in the 20+ years that I’ve been in Savannah. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the summer doesn’t do the same thing in the opposite direction… Glad you’ve got power. Do you have someone to shovel that stuff for you, or do you have a snow blower?
I have a guy with a plow who does the driveway, so all I have to do is shovel the 3 feet between the back porch & the driveway. And the front walkway if I feel like it, but that door is almost never used.
The problem is in the spring. I have a gravel driveway & have to rake a lot of it off the lawn, as it’s hard for the plow guy to set his plow right, so it removes the snow but doesn’t dig up the driveway.
Sorry it’s so cold by you. Bummer.
Gonna go make some biscuits. BBL.
