One of the strangest and most annoying Republican talking points about the Democrats’ health care bill is that’s it too long. We’ve heard this from them almost non-stop since the House bill was introduced last year.
[T]his legislation actually uses the word ‘shall’ 3,425 times. After weeks of backroom negotiations, now the Democrats have emerged with a bill that isn’t a thousand pages; it’s 1,990 pages.
So how much takeover can you cram into 2,000 pages? By comparison, the legislation that created Medicare and Medicaid in 1965, which now cost nearly $800 billion annually, was less than 300 pages long. So at 2,000 pages today, that’s a whole lot of government input for a plan the Speaker says won’t result in Washington taking over health care.
And John Boehner:
[t]he fact that it weighs in at nearly 2,000 pages — more than 620 pages longer than the government takeover of health care Hillary Clinton proposed in 1993 — is as good an indication as any of just how costly and unsustainable Speaker Pelosi’s proposal is.
Cue John Boehner’s spokesman, today.
“The White House’s ‘plan’ consists of an 11-page outline, which has not been scored by the Congressional Budget Office or posted online as legislative text. So they want to reorganize one-sixth of the United States’ economy with a document shorter than a comic book, and they’re complaining that they can’t find our plan on their own website? C’mon.“
You just can’t make this shit up.

And then there’s Congressman Camp (R-Mich) telling MSNBC this morning the Obama proposal was too “big idea”
These guys are dizzy with their spinning.
Here’s what to do. Ask Boehner what the ideal length for a health-care reform bill is. Then take the eleven-page WH bill and add the required number of pages in tanning salon coupons. This way we get the bill to the length the Republicans want and have a chance of getting Boehner’s vote as well.
And then we kill the bill.
Healthcare should be trimmed to one sentence on one page: Medicare for all.
In 48 point print so the blind faith folks can read it.
Like that bank bailout?
If you print Sarah Palin’s book the way legislation is printed (big type, few words on the page), it’s longer than either the House or Senate health care bills.
A side question: which comic books does Boehner read?
There is simply no pleasing these buffoons, and yet our bipartisan fetishist President keeps trying. The American people are running out of patience with his absent-Daddy needs.
That’s amazing, considering all those dropped g’s.
That is an excellent question.
Given that he is a socially conservative Republican, my money is on porn comics.
The emerson caucus weighing in:
A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines.
Republicans are actually writers for The Onion.
You bring up a good point. The health care bills definitely have more g’s in them than Palin’s book. And g being Marx’s favorite letter, it clearly proves socialist intent.
SuperTanMan Boehner provides comic relief.
Too short? Too long? Too tall? Too short? Too fat? Too thin? naahhh…
Too black!
The Republicans are all racists. Racists hate blacks. Having a black President is their worst nightmare come true. Republicans have been in racist hysterics since the November 2008 election of our first black President. We will just have to move on without the GOP.
Time to return to democracy with a 51-vote majority in the Senate to pass legislation. Dear Dems: no more excuses, just pass the goddammed Public Option now; Day One and open to every American.
Who is handling GOP talking points? Fine the GOP case is so weak they have to lie to sell it. They have to lie to create hate and keep America divided.
But they also have to tell good lies, lies that will be believed if the GOP says for years government has to much paper work you can’t complain that government does not have to much paper work.
Your working against your Brand’s image.
The GOP used to have a good PR team first they made the Bed Time for Bonzo guy President because he could read a script.
Then just to prove that they could do it they made Bonzo President. But during the handling of Hurricane Katrina and Bush’s Mission Accomplished stuffed Cod Piece photo op the GOP’s PR time started making mistakes dumb ones.
Spray on tans everyday can’t be healthy. Why would any GOPer given their parties position on race want to be
brownorange?time to Blow the Whistle on these knuckleheads
The lies are so bad they are comedy.
*gasp* Maybe Boehner is secretly a Kossack!
GOPers don’t read, much less read comics they are the only liberal print media left in this country.
No wait at a Jesus book store I read some christian comics once apparently all Hindu gods are really demons.
Even when I was a kid the fundies were mixing and marketing race and religious bigotry.
Maybe Boehner is secretly the Great Pumpkin.
“Congressman, I knew George Hamilton. You, sir, are no George Hamilton.”
The sign of the Great Orange Satan is a spray on tan? I wonder if he has a 666 hidden anywhere too?
Do FirePups have signs?
Terrific!
Linus would not preach the Gospel of a False God.
Look if we want to win this debate on healthcare put “Sicko” on National TV.
LOL!!
Republicans win elections because they tap into white prejudice against blacks and immigrants.
Medicare for ALL. — ‘s been there all the while, even the Republicans were bitching about Dem’s cost cutting this gem of a policy.
If only the president would work the bi-partisan angle a little harder. I’m sure the GOP is willing to meet the president half-way between Mussolini style fascism and Christianist authoritarian absolutism.
They win elections because Democrats loose them.
GOPers say read the bill at town hall meets, we should say watch the movie we should say France, Japan they have systems that work better meaning they live longer and work cheaper.
GOPers want their insurance pals to get cash. Obama wants to make us all give them more cash. We need National Healthcare now a piecemeal approach won’t work.
Your both right.
At least California is looking into these Robber Barons!! Personally I hope California passes The Public Option and puts them out of business.
Thanks.
IIRC, Ahnold pledges to veto any single payer bill that makes it out of the legislature.
All it would take is for one State to legislate real reform, and it’s success would do the rest. Perhaps Progressives should adopt California as their own back-door 13 dimensional chess move.
And next week Boner will complain about the Font.
And then he’ll complain about the color in every other word.
And then he’ll complain about the type of paper it was printed on.
And then he’ll complain about…..
Cali state government is broke.
Who’s going to be the single payer?
Premiums and the savings from the establishment of a California Public State Bank.
With healthcare costs increasing like they are, how can California (or any other government) afford not to restructure their system?
It is common sense.
It’s like Walter Sobchak in The Big Lebowski complaining that tossing the ransom over the side of the bridge effs up his plan. Boehner had a nice game running with his 2000-page prop. Now Obama messed that all up.
Sadly, this kind of clowning is strictly the sideshow in Washington these days. For real skulduggery, witness the final stake in the heart of the public option from Senator Rockefeller.
Really! How else can American business compete in the Global Economy WITHOUT Single Payer! Every other competitor on the world Market doesn’t have to pay those costs directly like their American counterparts.
Yeah…what’s up with Rockefeller?!?!
I’m all wound up about his statement about the PO.
Ain’t it the truth….get ‘em the Cliff’s notes. Can’t expect them to read the whole thing…all of which would be funny were it not so sad and costly for our American people and system we call government.
you and me both, snap
absolutely infuriating
that’d be the way to sell it
These fucking guys kill me…….. literally
Appreciate everyone’s commentary, but, really, is this any surprise. While the Democrats are crapulous turn-coats, the Republics just say NO to anything. That’s all they got: NO! They do that bc it works with their base, whether Tea Party or otherwise.
Sheesh! BAH. A pox on both their houses.
The Republicans had 8 years. Time up. Now all they have time for is complaining and saying no over and over again.
I have spent a great deal of time in Congressman Boehner’s district in Ohio in numerous nursing homes. Boehner should spend some time in a few of the nursing homes in his district. If he took the time he would talk to one person after the next who has a story about being cut our of therapy of some treatment by their insurance companies. Especially United Health Care (Un Secure Horizons)
Bet if someone calls Boehner’s district offices you would come up with a long list of complaints against private insurers in his district. Also lots of Vets waiting for their monthly payments due to complications in the VA system
Last night Rachel Maddow had a pile of papers representing both the House and Senate’s health care legislation and then the 11 pages that Obama just sent out having to do with a few more health care issues that he wants included. I thought the piles was a great way to “show us”
What the hell is wrong with the people of Ohio, whoever the hell they are? They are unemployed, uninsured, poverty sticken and hopeless, yet they send this pumpkin colored ass back to congress to “represent” them! This BONER dude is a train wreck that’s already happened, a cold, stone faced creep who has no buiness in the people’s business. Come on people, wise up of continue to self destruct.
And what was the length of the original $790 Billion Tarp proposal from Paulson? Three pages?
If you haven’t done so yet, stock up on popcorn and beer (or hot chocolate) and take Thursday off. The fun’s going to be televised.
