The facts about human-caused global climate change have not changed: it’s real, it’s happening, and it’s a bitch. Also, because we are collectively burdened with an utterly dysfunctional political system which allows undue influence to liars, fools, cowards, weenies, loudmouths, hacks, charlatans, and absolute dickweeds, the chances of the American government taking positive action to deal with this crisis are remote.
So if you have kids and grandkids, apologize to them now for the trashed planet they’re bound to inherit. I myself am stockpiling whiskey supplies for my toddlers. When they’re my age, they’ll put them to excellent use. I just have to make sure they know enough not to contaminate the stuff with water, which will be larded up with amoebas and bacteria and so forth which is unlikely to be particularly flavorful and will by then likely have sufficiently evolved to become microscopic alcoholic life-forms. Why should us mammals have all the fun.
Anyhow it’s worth noting the incredibly shoddy — and loathsome — quality of the attacks on the science, and the scientists doing it. These attacks have lately originated in the British gutter press, from whence they get picked up in the American gutter right blogosphere, are squawked over by the American gutter Republican party, and are thence laundered into semi-respectability by the American gutter Washington Post.
At any rate, if you want to know what is actually going on with the science and the lying about the science, RealClimate explains it all.
It’s important. Go read it.

About Firedoglake
THERSday! Forecast is for fair to partly cloudy vision with intermittent downpours of stupid.
It’s all fun and games until somebody loses the West Antarctic ice sheet.
Evening all.
Hey, Thers. I blame the press for not doing their jobs. It is their reliance on the he said-she said “balance” without fact checking anybody’s statements that leads to this bullshit. That and those segments of the corporate media which are deliberately disseminating false information in order to fatten the bottom line of their corporate overlords (Hi, GE!).
We are all climate jihadists now.
Kind of like those weeds that have developed a resistance to Roundup. Upon which the maker blamed the users citing overuse.
What’s the current estimate of sea-level change if that falls in?
And the insects that have become resistant to Bt.
Here are some scary maps showing possible impacts of sea level rise.
Or the wingnuts who are now resistant to facts and knowledge.
Your A Game Material is extending past previous boundaries lately, ES.
Snow fever?
*G*
Blossoms are blooming on the camelia’s and the cherry trees here in Sacto, past two days.
Achoo!
Talk to the people’s of the Andes and Himilayas as THEIR glaciers shrink and disappear.
They are worried, also.
Some will deny till it hits them.
Most others are appropriately worried, be they 1st or 3rd world culture.
Thers, thanks for this great post!
Off the top of my head, I couldn’t tell you. But It Would Be Bad.
This is kind of encouraging, in a morbid humor kind of way. If the sea level rises 100 meters (the maximum estimate I have seen) it basically floods the entire South.
Don’t forget the various deseases that have developed resistance to most antibiotics. But that won’t effect the right, they don’t believe in evolution.
Sounds dreamy, Larue… Blooms should explode here in a week or two.
I thought sure that absolute dickweed link was going to lead to Donald Trump….
Back to read comments now.
Reconciliation. Now. All.
Lucky devils. We cannot expect anything for at least a couple of months. As warm as it has been lately, however, we could get an early spring (which was my comment when the groundhog predicted only six more weeks of winter).
They don’t believe in anything that wasn’t in whatever version of the bible they met in Sunday school. Which should include all modern technology, but for some reason they aren’t averse to anything that will keep them alive and entertained (for whatever values of ‘alive’ and ‘entertained’ actually apply).
AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen Thers and the Firepup Freedom Fighters:
I’ve already apologized to my kids and grandkids for the huge mess we’ve made of the planet but also for the promise to make sure that none of them, their generation or their children’s generation would fight any corporate wars. Until recently I’ve been pretty optimistic about the chops this coming generation has to turn this mess around. I look at my own kids, 2 of ‘em teaching and union activists and the young one on ‘er way to graduate school and I look at my three grandaughters two of whom are engaged in math and science in elementary school at levels that we didn’t get tangled up with until high school and I feel pretty damned good about their chances of gettin’ us outta the mess my generation let our father’s generation get us into. Then I read and engage with some of the youngsters who pass for left-wing thinkers (some around FDL) and I despair for my own kids…global warmin’ and corporate destruction of the planet and poverty and famine for half the world’s population are not gunna be half as hard as gettin’ contributions from these nihilistic lounge lizards and livingroom radicals.
Ah well…at least I don’t hafta apologize for that extra baggage.
Great post…love to laugh instead a cry…you gotta gift Citizen Thers.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, IT’S ALL ABOUT THE WARS STUPID!!
Nice uninformed rant. Yes the science is settled, the climate is warming… and has been since before the industrial age. The agenda is clear too… goldman sachs needs another scam to game (carbon tax and trade). What’s not at all settled is how much human activity has contributed to warming. In all likelihood its negligible and nothing proposed will have any effect on what the climate does in the future anyway. They’re all big government control freak scams. Want to worry about something? How about over fishing in the oceans or where the water will come from for a billion people when the Himalayan glaciers melt (but because of the Sun not ANYTHING man has done). Tune out the pied pipers (they’re all ignorant morons or tools) get the facts and get some perspective.
Yeah.
Amazingly the American papers aren’t nearly as awful as the British papers on this. The NYT & the WaPo are “just” doing the false equivalence, the British rags are actively lying, making up quotes, character assassinating.
Estimates vary between three and six meters.
Free pseudo of the latter is here.
Too many dickweeds, too little time.
Thers, nice post.
SAVE THE WHISKEY!
Citizen ricardo:
Just how is the climate on your side of the moon?
Can’t we at least get entertaining trolls? Ignorant, stupid, and smelly I expect, but boring as well?
Been mid 60′s two weeks now daytime, only lo 50′s at night.
70F past two days or so.
Time to turn the back 40 soil NOW, clean out the pots, and get my herbs, tomatoes and squashes in the ground and in the pots. By June they’ll all fry in 100F.
Except the basil and rosemary, that is.
Sigh.
There is that…
So, let’s see. Who should I believe…virtually all available scientific data, or an Internet troll? Give me a minute, I’m thinking about this…
Come on people, you know better. DON’T feed the trolls.
We have been unusually warm with highs up in the 40s the past 2 weeks here. Supposed to cool off a bit over the weekend, but still warmish for this time of year. Unfortunately, we are not getting the snowfall we need to feed the rivers. Could be a hellish fire season this summer and lousy fishing to boot.
Citizen Thers:
What’s yer guess about the age of the troll at #22 and now #34?
Try Phil Jones of the IPCC who just admitted he was full of Caca
Try the last link first.
On the Internet there are such innovations as “hyperlinks.”
Link, please?
Mental or chronological? The first is about 4. I have no clue about the latter, but I think my grandkids are smarter.
Considering number 36, I would say about four.
Citizen EDP:
Come on now, don’t feed ‘em, don’t look at ‘im, don’t mention ‘is name…if we don’t feed ‘im we won’t get his shit on our shoes. How old do ya think this little cave dweller is? (Oh I missed yer #31…as Emily LaTilla would say: “Never mind.”)
Just google “Phil Jones admits” and read to your hearts discontent. I don’t spoon feed
Here’s some more maps. They’re a little naive – Death Valley isn’t going to be filling up when sea level rises, given that it’s very-much-inland past some areas that are a couple of thousand feet above sea level. They go to a 14-meter rise, though.
Old enough to know better, I would think. Hasn’t learned how to use punctuation, though.
No link is as good as a lie. I don’t do your dirty work for you.
http://davidbrin.blogspot.com/2010/02/distinguishing-climate-deniers-from.html
Hey, the new en vogue bipartisany suggests that man made or not, shit’s happening and we’re all screwed.
Even the trolls know we’re fucked.
I guess that’s something.
Not sure what.
Firepup Freedom Fighters:
Gotta get some sleep so I ken get up and take the wife ta work and not be grumpy…and have fun with the troll just don’t get arrested for assaulting a child…trolls are almost people too ya know.
Jane, “You Mean All My Problems Won’t Be Solved with a Bikini?“, 2005:
Speaking of those who choose the Rolex-clad, BMW-driving lobbyists getting rich, I noted this in 2007 when the IPCC’s “Summary for Policymakers” was released:
I’ll go with the Bunsen burner crowd, too.
You know, I have never seen advanced stage paresis before. It is kind of informative, if sad and pathetic.
Night Norske… don’t burn those flannel sheets!
Can we all just take a big step back for a minute?
Cuz if not, the mods will continue what they really do hate to do.
Jam on your shit sandwich.
Citizen DrDick:
Don’t do it Brother…don’t acknowlege the little waste of space…I know ya wanna take ‘im down but you’ll feel awful in the mornin’.
Thank you Mods.
Haven’t been here long, have you?
We haven’t done anything to the troll. Yet. We’re still being polite, even.
I dunno, but I’m glad that I spend all of my time at least 100 meters above sea level.
I’m going to bed. Maybe for a long time. Nite all.
I’d seen ya say that elsewhere last night I think . . . if El Nino HAS weakened, which I’ve heard some say, then it’s over for rain for us . . . I worry each spring when blooms start mid February. Early spring means early and long summer all too often from what I’ve seen since ’88.
THAT might mean 100F as early as May, and some long 100F + two week spells . . .
For you, the fires are as bad as parts of CA . . . the loss of fishing now, is inexcusable and SOME deity should be sacrificed to, perhaps with properly prepared trolls.
Life at 3200 feet is real good.
Nighters!
Wow, half of Arkansas would be beach front property.
“Is that you, Jim Inhofe?…Is this me?”
;>)
Do wittle bitty strawberries count?? Of course there is the Orange and Lemon trees.. Apricots are just bllooming.. gotta hate this weather here heh Laure??
Jim Bob is definitely into oil company bukkake.
ricardo sure sounds a lot like Sadly,No’s Gary Ruppert. Could it be…?
Still using the bottle huh . . . . oh well.
C’mon, we ALL provide linky’s, it’s how this place rolls.
You don’t want to be ‘different’ do ya?
You DO wanna be like us, doncha?
Besides, yer outnumbered, yer surrounded, and we’re bored.
It wouldn’t quite be human sacrifce would it?
If there’s mountains to protect DV, why does it rise?
I don’t get it . . . ????
Hey, part of OK would be beach front – but with our luck, the shoreline would leave Inhofe’s place on the dry side.
*G*
Key of A Minor?
I love a good jam.
They used contour lines, and assumed that anything below a certain level would be under water. Which works fine when you’re along the coast, more or less, and not dealing with DV. (That’s why I said it was a bit naive. Smart would take out those areas.)
He’s lovin’ the taste of hot, sweet crude launched from a corporate spigot – And all the lovely lucre he gets for being so delightfully compliant.
There’s a word for people who engage in such activity…But the children are still awake.
;>)
I think he has been investing in future beach front property and worried that we might do something to stop it.
I think we can consider him a “wholly owned subsidiary.”
Is it okay to hope he’s investing too close to the current shoreline?
When I lived on W. 39th in San Mateo, I was up a rise of about 100 feet, with bay windows facing bay and across the street. Fog rolls up and over Crystal Springs behind me, 3pm, sharp. Nites, kewl fog moistened for perfect sleeping. Rent doubled every two years. Hard. By by San Mateo . . . and Bay Area. Sigh. Love that fog.
Good question, guess it might depend on the preparation method . . .
Time for me to toddle off. Take care all.
Dammit db … don’t you have enough to do, with the Winter Olympics in town ? *g*
Erm … RBG is the Sheriff ’round these here parts …
In addition to being a frisky handpuppet that they can use until his usefulness wears off…Then, into the great Northern Pacific Gyre with the rest of the flotsam. Fortunately, he’s biodegradable.
;>)
G’nite Sir ! I trust your health is back to optimum.
Yeah I know thats why I have been here 30+yrs… Just can beat the weather here in Redwood City just a tad warmer than San Carlos and never so hot as Pa… Garden goes in this week.. at least the early ones.. Tomatoes maybe in two or 3 weeks..
*focuses icy gaze on nahant*
Starting a Garden right now would encroach on my Curling Rink … that’s my story an’ I’m sticking to it ! *g*
Petro!
No, I’ve put a mountain range between that mendacious bit of developer’s trickeration and myself…While the lower Mainland submerges itself beneath the waves, the S.S. darkblack will be in a dry berth far from the clamor.
;>)
Save me a spot, brother ! *g*
Ahhhh . . . thanks, I’m a bit slow tonight . . . it would seem.
Funny, one of the earlier linky’s from Anthro Doc was discussing a sea rise of only 3 metre’s in the next 100 years.
I guess there’s a lot of variance as to what will happen where and when if.
But even 3 metre’s in many areas will mean huge changes.
Any 20 metre’s will spell millions upon millions of folks for a population shift locale wise.
Q for all you in the know . . . if the West Antarctic Ice Sheet buffer ice melts, and the West Antarctic Ice Sheet does collapse, does it happen fast? Or slow? What rate? And then, how fast do the rest of the ocean waters rise?
Also, Q2: A linky said if West Antarctic Ice Sheet melts, the planets rotation of axis shifts 1500 metre’s. Isn’t that globally catastrophic for some reasons such as, magnetic force field polar disruptions, angle of sun, general weight shifts on continental plates and such?
Thanks if anyone’s still up and awake or cares . . . just idle musings on my part . .
Hey man send that cold shit over Boston’s way that way I can tell my family just how nice it is here tonight.. Down to a tee shirt with all the windows wide
OPEN!!
Wasn’t it Drifty who recently posted: “I do things, other girls don’t.”
Loosely translated, that is . .
*G*
*helps Petro glare*
LOL !!!
Margot !
Who needs garden fresh tomatoes in March anyways ?!! *g*
Indeed, Larue – The…(ahem) special sort of attentions that maintain one’s perceived electability as expressed in monetary terms.
…
Now, Petro – you don’t live in that lotus-eating bedlam, do you? I thought you were a denizen of the Big Smoke, a genuine Freasterner…
;>)
Dude, yes!
Speaking of Canada, Vancouver and NBC . . .
Honey walks into the computer room a while ago, wants to know is EVERYONE as pissed as she is with the coverage!!!
I said, yes, all the blogosphere is alight with derision and loathing for delayed broadcasts, a lack of listed programs and times of events, and a particular deep seated annoyance with a pre ponderence of athlete background fluff pieces instead of showing the damned events.
So, thanks all you in the blogosphere, for being on the same side of this as my honey.
*G*
the LQQK, Margot!
but it is still worth watching! yes???
That’s the one!
She is, I don’t . . . it don’t move me anymore like it used to . . . don’t even know why.
So, CA Pups and Pups Near And Far . . .
CA Senator Diane Feinstein (known as Di Sci-Fi) has endorsed the 4 Senator Letter to Reid regarding resurgence of the Public Option (which version, what components? I’ve not seen THAT spelled out) using Senate Reconciliation so the House will support a final bill.
Why am I worried Feinstein is on board with this?
Discuss. And only 7 minutes to LLN, also, so hurry it up! lol
I was hoping that the sub-competent greedheads seeded throughout the government and province in positions of power and influence would provide enough negative ballast to deep-six this corporate enrichment strategy masquerading as an amateur sport revue into the stinking dung bog of history – but apparently, they’re just not sub-competent enough. Yet.
;>)
Gosh I love those QQs
I do too. Can’t carry it off like Suz can, though. She’s got the LQQK.
Yes, Indeedy!
Di Sci-Fi?? Maybe history??
But from HuffPro:
Neither Klobuchar nor Cardin appear ready to sign a letter penned by by four other senators endorsing both the public option and the use of reconciliation. Eleven senators have signed the the letter.
Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) became the 11th Senator to sign on to a new effort by Democrats to press Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) to pass a public option for insurance coverage using reconciliation, her office confirmed to the Huffington Post on Wednesday.
Story continues below
The California Democrat joins a list of mostly progressive members to offer her late-stage support for the government run plan. In a letter to Reid on Tuesday a quartet of Democrats penned urged Reid to pass the proposal through parliamentary procedures that allow a simple up-or-down vote.
Heh, honey’s a Canuckistani, Scotian.
She said: “And Vancouver has screwed it all up, they aren’t doing ANYthing right! Too many delays! They shouldn’t ever be allowed to host again!”
And she’s such a slight and pleasant Scotian, normally . . . ;-)
Yep, been reading HuffPo all day on her declaration . . .
I worry. If she’s for it, I might have to be ‘agin it . . ;-)
possibly Larue possibly
Petro @ #81 got it partially correct..the truth is that I’m just a weak substitute for the real Late Night Sheriff.
But, FWIW, I was the one who convinced her to put on the kevlar.
So, your point is?
That she does :)
Vancouver shouldn’t be allowed to do anything more strenuous than beach vending of ‘herbal remedies’ and street-corner 3 card Monte dealing, in keeping with the high ethical standards of the locale.
;>)
Without question the stupidest blogpost I’ve ever read.
Thers, ever wonder about the toxic manufacturing process involved in making your car or tires, if you’re old enough to drive yet? or the manufacturing process of the servers for this website? or the heat the servers generate and the energy it takes to cool a server?
The fact is that the real eco-disasters are right in front of you…you don’t need to go chasing phantoms. While we hide toxic messes at home, and export the rest of our toxic processes to the third world, you sit at home cozily blogging away oblivious to real world environmental problems.
For the record dude, RealClimate is the home blog for Michael Mann, Phil Jones and the rest of the fraudsters. The real information is at The Air Vent, WattsUpWithThat & Climate Audit; However, to get through the materials you’ll need a high school education, a working knowledge of statistics and an IQ over 110 which may well be beyond your abilities.
There are PhD’s and Professors across the globe at every major institution that dispute the premises of AGW. What’s your position Einstein? They are idiots and you’re correct, especially as the “scientists” who prepared the IPCC AR4 are running for their lives. They’ve manipulated data…and conveniently “lost” data that supports AGW. Why is Britain completely rewriting all of their temp reports going back 160 years? WHy did Phil Jones just state that there has been no global warming since 1995, caused by man or otherwise?
You talk of liars & charlatans….is this reverse-world? We found the liars and charlatans…and they’re all the former purveyors of AGW.
Here’s a nice article about a Princeton Professor http://www.dailyprincetonian.com/2009/01/12/22506/ who correctly states the affairs of Climate Alarmists. While his colleagues were reaping millions from BP and the Alarmist infrastructure to peddle their tripe….where will they get their funding now? BP has pulled out…no longer funding the Alarmists. The public is out. Most of the media is out…it’s run it’s course lad, move along. A few struggling outlets continue to fight the fight…for example in 2009 the SF Chronicle reported more fog in the future due to ACW, Yesterday they reported less fog in the future due to AGW….this AGW is so dang difficult to figure out…basically whatever happens…it’s AGW. The issue is dead and buried and it’s not coming back…the Golden Goose is dead.
Now if i can just do a better job of malting the corn i will have it!!
And white oak for the barrels.
Or may be it will just concentrate teh “crazy”. :-(
You’re a little late to the game, bloke. Despite your hysterical invective you and your mob of tabloid journalists and amateur scientists had best be prepared to eat shit. Your tissue of lies and obfuscation may have fooled some hoopleheads looking for villains, but to put it bluntly, you have no idea what you are talking about.
The scientific academies of EVERY industrialized nation have endorsed the findings of climate change science. Should I believe them or should I believe the consortium of whosits, whackjobs, and whatsupurarse websites trying to establish a bizzarro parallel universe of science, complete with your own peer review system. When any one of the aforementioned national academies or even the academy a minor country officially questions the science of AGW, come back and we’ll have a serious discussion. Till then you can continue to howl at the moon, just do it somewhere else.
Oh, and BTW realclimate.org is run out of the University of Chicago. That’s in the USA, [edited by mod].
[mod note: Please do not insult other commenters. Thanks]
[edited by mod]
As to your bizarre allegations I respond as follows:
1. I never said Realclimate was anywhere other than the USA? SO stop frothing at the mouth. It just happens to be a clearinghouse for leftist tripe from Mann, Gore, Jones, Briffa and the rest of the Alarmists.
2. Get your facts straight [edited by mod]…then shoot off your mouth. I don’t know what National Academies you are talking about but either the UK and the USA are not industrialized or you are making broad statements that have no basis in reality. In 2006 you’ll recall there were US hearings and the Wegman Report confirming that McIntyre’s analyses were correct. The National Academy of Sciences concurred. In the UK the Met Office is forced to review 160 years of data because they relied heavily on land data from East Anglia…the UK Royal Society (their National Academy) relies on the Met office…so how can it be said in light of recent events that the Royal SOciety supports conclusions for 160 years of data as yet to be produced. As for Russia…I believe to be industrialized, forget about it.
3. There is no evidence of global warming for the last 15 years…ergo more C02 does not equal higher temperatures let alone a feedback amplification of temperatures at a geometric rate….don’t believe me? Just see Phil Jones, aka Mr. IPCC aka Mr. Hadley CRU in his interview with the BBC last week. SO there must be another explanation. Also Dr. Jones was kind enough to admit the obvious IPCC conclusions of 2 decades ago, to whit, the Medieval Warm Period had temperatures as high or higher than today without the C02. There goes the hockeystick.
4. Since you apparently need a worthy cause, please tell Dr. Salzar to stop drilling holes in the Bristlecones to support a bogus theory when there are ample cores already. Those trees survived for 4,800 precisely because they didn’t have 3 sets of over officious global warming scientists drilling holes in them over 2 decades allowing dangerous bacteria into the cambrium and sap.
Seriously Al, [edited by mod]
[mod note: Please do not insult other commenters. Any further comments doing so will be removed. Thanks.]
1. realclimate is operated by climatologists. your sources are operated by (provide your own epithet).
2.June, 2009–In a joint statement, the science academies of the G8 countries, plus Brazil, China, India, Mexico, and South Africa, called on their leaders to “seize all opportunities” to address global climate change that “is happening even faster than previously estimated.”
Go look it up yourself: http://dels.nas.edu/climatechange/
3. You simply have no idea what Phil Jones said. You may think you do, but I’m afraid you are deluded, insane, or both.
4. I have no idea what you are talking about (see 3).
go back to whatsupyourarse.com
Since I take you to be one of the brits, let me lead you to the official site of your own Royal Society and their official position on your tissue of lies.
Further more the Met Office has produced nothing since November 2009 to rescind or revise the official position on the urgency of confronting greenhouse gas emissions.
Since the moderators removed my previous comment, let me just repost the Joint Statement of National Academies from June 2009 of the G8+5, which includes:
USA, UK, France, Japan, China, France, Canada, Italy, Germany, Russia, Mexico, South Africa, Brazil, India
To the moderators. I applaud your efforts to maintain civility in comment discussions. However, there should be some consistency. Nothing I have said was out of line with what is said in the main body of this post, regarding the undue influence and assault on reason by a mob of “[edited by mod]“.
Thank you very much.

Wonderful. Tell it to Thers. Do as I say, not as I do?
