Early voting for the gubernatorial primaries starts today in Texas. Details are at the Texas Secretary of State page.
Here’s 5 reasons why Democrats should vote early and often in the GOP primary — and vote for Hutchison.
- There is no danger Bill White, the excellent Democratic front runner who’s polling very well against Rick Perry, of losing the Democratic primary.
- Perry’s failure to receive more than 50% of the primary vote will ensure a runoff, taking resources away from him against White.
- If Hutchison actually pulls the upset and wins the runoff, a victory for Bill White is more likely, because the teabagger/secessionist crazies who Perry courts (and who Debra Medina says she represents) will stay home on election day in November.
- While it would be morbidly fascinating to watch Perry and Medina try and out-crazy each other during the runoff, the thought of Medina — who makes Perry seem like some sort of technocratic moderate — as governor of the second-largest state in the country is too scary to contemplate.
- Rick Perry is a corrupt, shallow, Christianist hack, and Texas Democrats should jump at any chance to finally get rid of him.

So what’s likely to happen? Perry & Hutch will do a runoff, Perry will win, Perry will win in the general? That’s what the polls you linked to show.
Thanks BT.
Go Texas Firedogs!
Heh. Prepare for much “They won’t play fair” if the Dems have much impact on this, coupled with complete amnesia for the push to have R’s vote Hilary in the presidential primary in 08.
The photo (above) of KBH makes her appear so lifelike. Do you suppose she uses the same makeup team as Perry uses for his hair?
If a Perry-Hutch runoff causes a victory for White, it’s probably going to really piss off Chuck Norris.
…and we don’t want that! :P
Do they have an “open” primary, i.e., one in which ANYONE can vote?
Bring it on!
BT, that is sound reasoning, and I am considering it seriously, because I can choose to vote in the winger primary. Trouble is, I feel dirty self-identifying as a republican. IIrc, all they ask is which primary you want to vote in, not if you are one, right?
AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen Blue Texan and the firepup Freedom Fighters:
OK, now THAT’s what I’m talkin’ about!!! Get the activist Democrats energized and keep ‘em focused…any way to get the Daley machine in Chicago ta put some troops on the ground down there? Now THAT would be a matchup I’d wanna see, Texas fascist cowboys against REAL gangsters from the block!!
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, IT’S ALL ABOUT THE WARS STUPID!!
.
Perry is inching towards 50%. We want to avoid that, and having KBH win the primary is gravy.
Yes. And an open runoff.
Get’s the Kinkster back in the race!
Sure wish I lived in a state that would let me vote for anyone in the primaries. Certainly makes thing more interesting.
speechless, eh? :)
Given the latest anti-democratic measures here in Indiana, I have to agree… or perhaps you’re here, as well?
Upstate New York – the pimple on the belly of the beast.
I love it!
Progressives need to stop being nice.
A vote for Hutchinson, is a vote for Bill White
Hmmm.
Not such a good lead to follow.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Rush_Limbaugh_Show#Operation_Chaos
Why?
I just prefer not to follow Rush Limbaugh’s lead. He suggested R’s do this during the ’08 election.
Actually her makeup artist hangs her by the ankles and dips her head into a vat of wax prior to any public appearances or photos. She does look so lifelike doesn’t she? It’s a trick that many over the hill politicians like to use to prolong their pathetic careers.
Ewwww!
I love coming on progressive blogs and finding comments slamming women for their appearance. It makes my irony sensor hum to the point of near-explosion.
If Rush Limbaugh said to drink water, would you avoid hydration?
I think you can question the logic of the tactic itself (had a good exchange with a blogger in Texas who thinks its a bad idea), but to reject it simply “because Rush did it” is unsound.
Which Republic is not?
um why? the claim that the tea baggers will stay home if kay baily is the nom and she is easier to beat. yeah right.
yes bill white will likely win the dem nom but here is the thing- we have other races, very close int he primary for lt guv where linda chavez thompson, frmr exec head of afl is running against ronnie earle- they guy who indicted delay and many others. in harris co- where houston is- we have 80 races as the dems are fielding judge candidates for all the seat. we are taking on all republicans here.
no good progressive should vote for a conservative hack like kay bailout. she is conservative. she is also a scary pol- she is well liked bc she doesnt take stands on much yet votes the party line. her approval has been at 80pct. perry has high negatives and is detested by most- he has been a sucky guv for 10 yrs.
also at 715pm on mar 2nd, primary day, is the caucus where we take up resoutions for the state conv. many will propose ending the caucus system. we want primary reform. there is no good reason to vote for hutchinson in the gop primary. none.
im voting for bill whit and linda chavez thompson at the top. thompson is a progressive labor leader who had organized thousands in the valley. she needs every vote as ronnie earle is more known although not very progressive. i also think its high time tx had a latina lt guv who will fight for working folks. heck tx has never had a woman lt guv! remember the lt guv has more power than the guv here.
Ellie Mae or is it Jethro?, it’s a slam on phony politicians. Spare us the false outrage.
We do the same thing to men.

It’s a start.

Okay Blue Texan, you’ve convinced me. I was thinking about this a couple months ago and decided I just would feel icky getting in the GOP line–like someone else above said. But if it will help us get to a runoff, it’s worth it. Those two are beating each other up in the commercials and I think that should continue.
That’s your opinion. I have mine. Simply stating your opinion doesn’t make it correct.
I happen to think Hutchison is much more vulnerable in the general against White than Perry.
BT, this is an excellent idea. It’s what the Rs did to get Lieberman elected. The Rs think everything is fair game so go for it.
Gee BT. I wish you wouldn’t mince words. *g*
I still miss Molly I. terribly. But … you have a gift. Thank you!
I’m in TX, and this is what I was planning to do in the primary. Perry needs to go.
all im saying is the lt guv slot we have a real chance here to break a glass ceiling here for an actual progressive dem who w ould have more power than the guv. my opinion is perry is more beatable than hutchinson.
I hope you’re right! I think that’s where it will wind up. I just want Perry to have to waste a lot of money trying to beat Hutchison.
Seconded
Thanks BT.
As a fellow Texan, I will humbly submit that this is not the best idea for Texas Democrats who live in competitive areas (like Harris County where I live). There are a lot of important primary races we need to vote in. A very good friend of mine is running for judge (yes, we still elect all of our judges… sigh).
I just sent a link to this thread to a friend who lives in Houston, who is active in D grassroots politics. She’s been away from the office for a couple of days, so she’ll probably not get a chance to look at it today. But I’ll be interested in her take on it.
Considering they were probably posted by you, it makes my irony sensor positively tingle.
Hey, Bt, William, and others in Houston – absolutely agree if you have downticket races where voting Dem primary is important, you should stick w/ the Dems.
Here in Bexar Co (San Antonio) I don’t know that there is anything that important – I’m w/ Ruth, the thoughtt of requesting the Repub ballot for the first time in my life is …disquieting…but it might be worth it.
To art3, that Perry is more beatable than Kay Bailey, I doubt that. I’d love to think it was true, since he comes across to me as a scary kook who is also about on la Sarah’s level of intelligence/education.
But given that he’s already been re-elected twice, and the teabaggers are really fired up this year, I don’t think that that is correct.
I shall have to think about this. I have today more or less free, and could go to early voting.
I’m interested, too. You’ll let us know, right?
Don’t think I’ll make my decision today – plenty of time still.
No doubt this strategy has its downside. But getting rid of Perry is, IMO, absolutely paramount.
You (almost0 make me wish I was a Texas voter, so I could slap Perry in the kisser and help Bill White at the same time.
Yep, after I hear back from her, I’ll look for a thread to post it on. I’m sure this won’t be the last post on this subject. *g*
5.”Rick Perry is a corrupt, shallow, Christianist hack, and Texas Democrats should jump at any chance to finally get rid of him” you should add rich enough to own the water under Texas. You can do without oil, not water.
Okay, have checked to see if there is any competitive race in my district in the Dem primary, and there is one, so I will not switch to the winger line.
Let me see if I understand you correctly. You want me to vote in a Republican primary where my choices are a Whorn, an Aggie cheerleader or a teabagger?
I’m going to need lots of tequila ……….
Yes...please a runoff, they did it to use, why not kindly return the favor.
Citizen Raven:
Hell yes!! The Kinkster can represent all those disenfranchised Texans on the dark side a the moon.
If Kinky got elected Texas would have more fun than it deserves.
Have you read his books?
No doubt you’re right. So glad we have BlueTexan. If I haveta live in Texas, it’s good to have someone keeping me apprised of stuff I wouldn’t otherwise hear about.
That said, I have been thinking that if Perry wins again, he’ll likely move ahead with some of his crazier ideas, and I might have to pack up and move on again. Logically, to Maryland where I could help out my mother more (it won’t surprise me if she lives to 100, 9 yrs away). But the cost of living is way higher there, and that’s the biggest reason I haven’t already done it. My chances of earning a living at a salary sufficient to cover the difference are minimal. (And I’d have to figure out how to tame and transport ‘my’ feral cat, along with the four who live with me indoors. Oh, and persuade a landlord to rent to a person with five cats. *g*) Much easier to stay put. and not shovel snow.
Kinky I think dropped out of the Governor’s race this year (he was running as a Dem this time).
His best shot was four years ago when he got something 1% to 15% of the final vote.
I think you’re right, that he announced a month or so ago he would not run.
You still see the “Kinky is my Governor” stickers, though.
I must have missed your incisive critique of her politics in between your musings on her makeup technique.
Yeah, I’ll be waiting for evidence of your false accusation.
And that makes it okay. Because, you know, women aren’t disproportionally criticized for their appearance by the culture at large.
Somewhere a bridge is missing it’s troll.
WO, What is your assessment of Bill White–if you’re still around…
Perry is worse than Bush, imo. He’s a sneering, leering, snide little puke who does frat-boy even better than George did.
Somewhere, a commenter is missing his argument.
Perry used to look like a frat boy – now he looks like Hopalong Cassidy. I guess Texas prefers the cowboy look.
Unfortunately, having spent some of my “formative years” in Texas, I can tell you that Ms. Hutchinson’s “look” is quite “normal” for lots of women there.
I don’t give a fiddler’s fart how he looks. I’m referring to how he acts. If you caught the GOP debate in TX, you got a dose of that. He’s just a punk.
Didn’t mean to ruffle your feathers. I meant that he had changed his look to go along with his down-home, I’m just a country boy campaign.
I beg your pardon, Twain.
vote medina -she is not part of the democrat/republican party-or vote hutchinson for the staus quo-that will bring change
Medina’s a whackjob who wants to cut taxes in a state that’s going bankrupt and has some of the worst services in the nation.
It’d be great if a tactic if it worked, but it never gets enough people involved and throws off valuable metrics for judging the candidates real support or lack thereof. It was pissing in the wind when the dittoheads did it, and it’ll be the same way with the few Dems that participate in this.
Vote for your choice, not for a gambit.
My 2 cents.
Way late to this but our paper had a piece about DEMS not doing this in the primary b/c that decision, to vote R in the primary, keeps them from voting for down ticket Dems.
Choice between Dem/Rep ballots in primary.
I took the republican one so I could do exactly what author suggested. Could not believe the ballot propositions and their wording that were included on the Rep. ballot only. i.e.#3 “In addition to aggressively eliminating irresponsible federal spending, Congress should empower Amer citizens to stimulate the economy by Congress cutting fed Income taxes for all federal taxpayers, rather than spending hundreds of billions of dollars on so-called “federal economic stimulus”.
#5 The Texas Legislature should enact legislation requiring a sonogram to be performed and shown to each mother abut to undergo a medically unnecessary elective abortion” #4 Public Acknowledgement of God…you get it. Couldn’t find one on guns, shocked me.
Glad I decided to take the Rep ballot, otherwise I never would of seen these propositions. Sure hope White has a chance for governor. Perry is a nightmare. And he dreams of running for Pres. with Palin. So he wouldn’t be around much to govern anyway.
what are down ticket Dems?
The Governor’s race is the top of the (voting) ticket. Down ticket races are all the other races – state senate, state representative, City council, school board, whatever
thanks!
