k.d. lang — Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen live at the Juno Awards in Winnipeg, 2005.

Oh, boo. I know the feeling.
KD Lang is amazing.
hey emerson — i forking love her voice — how ya doing tonight?
that is simply astounding
It’s really nice. Warm and starry.
hey mac — how’s noo yawk city tonight dood? i like the buckley but kd is my fav
Good, Suzanne. I feel the same way. Her voice is so pure. How are you tonite?
foggy 39 here but the fire has it toasty inside
Happy Valentine’s Day, Suzanne — thanks for this wonderful song.
She is amazing, isn’t she?
that’s part of the problem, i was too nice and left my beloved mac at my mom’s so she can use it for the history book she’s writing. I’ll get it back one of these weeks!
(my daughter would LURRRVVV it if i bought her a mac)
i’m doing well — enjoying the o’s on tv
hey earthquake weather — gives me goosebumps each time i hear it — how ya doing tonight?
hey teddy — happy valentines day to you too babe — i thought it quite fitting for today.
nyc has a ice covered aspect.
and I also (slightly) prefer kd.
also love her cover of Joni Mitchell’s Help Me
since corporations are now person, perhaps a threat or two wished to the dell about liquids and its vital parts will *ahem* motivate it
yeah, felt sorry for the Russian guy that fell. To work that hard for so many years and then be a millimeter off…It must be tremendous pressure.
the first kd song i ever heard
Suz, that’s fabulous!
Found the lyrics here.
It’s Valentines Day hope the romantic love is rewarding to all you lovers
hey sunny — glad ya like it — there are several versions of this song with different last stazas.. this is the version she sang in this video
how ya doing tonight?
hey bb — happy valentines day to you too dood — how’s your bay tonight?
Now THIS was worth watching without the mute button on!
hey ppd — how’s the south south bay tonight?
Hi, Suze, ndfg, all LLN’rs – love that song. A coupla years ago it seemed like it was on all the tv dramas – specifically recall a Cold Case. Love it anyway. Buckley was the original, right? Whatever. Nice choice.
Glad to hear everybody’s warm – it was Spring for a little while here today. Around 5:00 I went into the grocery store – wore my jacket, left my scarf (I usually wear scarves until it’s high summer) in the car.
Came out less than an hour later – 6 to 8 degrees colder, wind whipping my hair all around, wheee — the cold front’s here. Sposed to be in the 30′s tonight, I think, but back to the 50′s tomorrow daytime.
My mom is in the Baltimore area – marvelling at how much snow she’s surrounded by. Very, very glad not to have to shovel it, or even go out in it. She lives in a retirement community where she eats one meal a day in the dining room, to which she walks entirely indoors.
They did have some trouble with staff being unable to get to work this last week, so, she said, some residents were pitching in to help. The younger ones, I presume. There’s quite an age range there.
She was going to take the community bus to the grocery store Friday, but decided she was a little too wobbly yet to cope(she was hospitalized in Dec., and has been a bit weak, but finally released by visiting nurse and thereapist.)
hey tejan — leonard cohen wrote it and i think he was the first to record it (but that could be wrong). glad to hear your mom is doing better.
Here’s a cell phone capture of how kd sang last night..
Thank you. You’re so right. I listened again – the the lyrics were very different in the second half.
All is good here, thanks.
wish it was front page quality *sigh* dayam she gave a hella performance fri
This is the saddest, most depressing anthem of love i’ve ever heard, hidden in the most beautiful music and sung here by the clearest and most beautiful voice and wonderful woman. How odd to offer this at the opening ceremoniesand on Valentine’s Day. It always brings tears to my eyes…and makes me want to rework things to sing more joyful Hallelujahs…
Funny Valentine Chet Baker http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvXywhJpOKs
Thjis pretty cool http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-LWTuhf5oI
i have a daff in bloom in the front yard by the driveway. way too early of a spring up here
Don’t want to jinx the weather, but I looks like spring’s sprung at least until our early April snow storm.
the leonard cohen hallelujah wiki page (his name in the post is the link) had a lotta the history of the song
Yeah – it’s not quality enough.
but too bad, this audio only qulaity is good – just no video
Ah, no doubt, right. I guess, it was just Buckley’s version that was all over the place a few years ago.
hey lasinva — i agree yet it was magnificent at the opening. how ya doing tonight?
I was thinking it was an odd choice for Olympics Opening ceremonies. Didn’t watch those. No doubt because of the several tv shows, I tend to associate it with surviving a death or at least a near-tragedy.
i’ve always thought of her version as a song of survival…. i don’t watch much network tv so don’t have the law and order etc association
Nice accompanyment too.
One version of Leonard Cohen’s 1984 lyrics Hallelujah
Found it. I’m such a contemporary culture dolt, but y’all are bringing me right along :-)
Not looking for any buds yet, first thing here is often the flowering quince. Love it, particularly the coral.
Not an odd choice from a Canadian point of view.
From this guy to the kd lang performance, Canada very politely challenged the US on it’s war status.
flowering quinces are so pretty
after the cultural portion of the opening ceremonies, i felt i knew my neighbors to the north a wee bit better — and a connection to these games that i wasn’t expecting. i’m a pacific northwestener now yanno — the games are a wee bit more than 300 miles north of me
I believe Jane used Anthem in her film, Natural Born Killers.
The birds they sang
at the break of day
I heard them say
Don’t dwell on what
has passed away
or what is yet to be.
Ah the wars they will
be fought again
The holy dove
She will be caught again
bought and sold
and bought again
the dove is never free…
Hi Folks. I can’t see the Olympics because we don’t get broadcast NBC in SF. Why? Because NBC corporate changed the rules on the local broadcast station.
“Give us money!” they said instead of “Care our shows and we’ll split the money with you. So a station in the south bay said, ‘We’ll give you money and we’ll take your shows!” NBC corporate said sure.
“What about the people who get broadcast in SF?”
NBC Corp: Screw ‘em if they don’t have cable or dish we don’t want them anyway.
The good news is Hulu will have some of the events, but nothing live.
Alright…! A Canuck wins the gold on Canadian soil for the first time ever…! Canada’s Women’s Hockey team will do it too…! ;-)
hey spocko — its forking tape delayed for the west coast on nbc too *spitting*
how’s sf tonight?
I’m particularly fond of the very first blooms, before the leaves set. So oriental looking on the brown angular stalks.
o canada!!! you are an hour behind the west coast feed dood — those moguls were great
Chet Baker is a real favorite of mine. Such a pure voice.
Also love k.d.lang, beautiful song, Suz, thanks.
my stepdad planted quinces at each house he and my mom have lived in. he loves the fruit and the modern artish first blooms — very striking. not sure how the newest (in az now) is gonna do but he got the ones in palm desert to bloom and fruit.
Just dropped back in and am now listening to KD Lang.
IMO, of the the greatest torch singers of any generation, and one of the FEW who can take Lenny Cohen’s works and breathe to and with them like Lenny did.
Great vid, Suz . . . incredible pic.
I was just noodling around Drifty’s n Busted’s places, and rediscovered LM’s Haiti post at GNB.
Some how, this vid brings it all back to the beginning of tonight, like you’d been out surfing and catching up with me, too.
What a great performance.
Now to catch up with the Pups . . . .
hey larue — glad ya like it — how’s sac?
hey margot — i think she is amazing — how’s ohio tonight?
For the Nagano games we were 18 hours behind the actual events… And we’re a heck of a lot closer to Japan than NYC…! ;-)
Remember me talking about the people doing open carry? Well they had an event at Starbucks in San Leandro. It appears that Starbucks has not become the “go to” spot for people who want to show off their handguns when they get their coffee.
I asked some of their customers what they thought about it. One woman said, “If they are going to make Starbucks weapon friendly then they should put a sign on the door so I can decide if I and to come in or not.”
Then I went to the businesses around Starbucks to ask if they had any spill over and what they thought of Starbucks becoming the place for arms civilians to get their coffee.
They weren’t happy about it.
big smile — very well done spocko
Don’t forget to engage your mute button, spocko – except for KD Lang’s Hallelujah.
Is that Tim’s son?
Tim Buckley Nails Fred Neill’s ‘Dolphins’.
I used to love Tim Buckley, despite his rather often misogynist lyrics and themes in his music.
Happy/Sad was a great piece of work, showing him at his best.
USA! USA! USA!
teddy! teddy! teddy!
Starbuck’s next ad campaign — Starbuck’s, Java with what’s left of the Constitution, guaranteed.
First KD I Heard That Killed Me
I swear there’s a youtube of her doing ‘One More Time Round The Dance Floor’, but I can’t find it.
I might have the title wrong . . . but it’s up there ‘The Reins’ . . *G*
Wow, Suz — did you see the rogue waves hitting spectators at Half Moon Bay watching Mavericks?
So in addition to contacting Starbuck and all the businesses around Starbucks I contacted the local police to get their comments.
They said it was up to Starbucks here is their statement,
For Starbucks, the safety of our customers and partners is our paramount concern. We have existing security protocols in place to handle situations related to safety in our stores. We will continue to adhere closely to local, state and federal laws and the counsel of law enforcement regarding this issue.
What do you think of that? What does it even mean?
her voice draws me in no matter what genre she is singing
NICE Chet Baker catch!!!
West Coast Cool School!!!!
Great catch . . . *G*
The thing is that Starbucks is being forced into this position by a radical fringe of the NRA (yeah, hard to believe, but it’s true). Not all of the NRA people in CA like the open carry method.
What Starbucks needs is to listen to their customers and staff. Ironiclly they wouldn’t let me talk to the staff and customers, they told me to leave!
“Starbucks, you are welcome to bring your guns, but no talking!”
tis a non statement statement. pd won’t act until there is a carry and they get the 911 calls. depending on the carry laws at the state, county, and muni level, there could be a violation — hard for the cops to prevent that which has not occured i’m sad to say
yup — made the local news up here
yeah he was Tim’s son and I was playing some Happy/Sad earlier today.
the mrs. is dreadfully fond of Buzzin Fly.
Welcome to Java Perditionville – where the 1st amendment is banned to preserve the 2nd amendment.
Holy Moly, Rocky! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCLZ9Z3gJQ8
an oh fuck for sure dood
I always like hearing our anthem played the first time, and for Hannah it’s very special considering her heartbreak in Torino. Plus Shannon has pink hair, how cool is that!?
It means they’re being incredibly stupid. Given the enormous investment in image they made, permitting a situation that may cause potential customers to fear entering is bizarre.
OTOH, they are on hard times and may be getting stupid. Hard to think gun lobby publicity would be more damaging.. But they should know their customers – I don’t.
shannon’s mom had a pink streak in her bangs last nite — i thought that was sooooo cool
Getting ready for The Next Big Storm. I chipped a few inches of ice off my driveway today, it was sunny.
I’ve been thinking about this event (and tea party events) and specifically how it is a battle being fought in the media, yet our response to the events are reactive.
My goal is to be prepared to provide the media with a different narrative.
So, for example it’s not Starbucks “complying with local laws”
it’s “Starbuck’s sells out the feeling of comfort of their customers to avoid the rath of the NRA.”
Or, to be more proactive. If they want to court the crowd that wants to have their gun on them at all times go out pitch them. Make them feel welcome and then see what your other customers do.
The stores have rights to refuse service and to make internal policies in line with their stated values. They are being bullied and aren’t willing to say no to these people. (because they have a gun?)
oh no — you got enough of them roof shingles to last ya to spring?
It’s word goo, takes the place of actually saying something meaningful but it sounds good.
Yes ma’am. Also bought some kitty litter just in case. Car floor mats are good too.
Sounds like they’ll be retraining their baristas to make and serve that NRA Kool-aid.
It sounds mushy enough that stupid people on either side might read that and say, “See, we won!”
Who is their demographic? Which group has been called Latte’ sippers?
I spoke to 9 customers at Starbucks. 8 weren’t happy with their decision.
One said she usually just comes in and out and wouldn’t notice.
I talked to the waitress in the restaurant next door. She said when they came in with their guns she “didn’t know their story” and it made her uncomfortable.
I called all the folks at the headquarters of all the local businesses to get their policies. I haven’t gotten anything from any of them yet.
by the power of the nra and the pull the nra has with both political parties
congrats on the 100 ppd
Yep, those were the two I first heard of her, a primary influence on me.
Then she went off in her career and well, covered Lenny Cohen and blew us all away yet and again and still.
Incredible voice, talent, heart . . . for a few decades now . . . *G*
Word goo! :-) I love it!
Exactly my thought (but you said it better!)
Bingo, one of MY fav’s, also . . .
Damn what a talent and a waste of a loss so young . .
Now I wonder if Starbucks wants their weapons welcome mat known in ALL areas?
“Hey Gangsters! It’s open carry day every day at Starbucks! Support your 2nd amendment rights!”
thanks, Suz — it’s the quality, not the quantity, eh
ya would think that after those 4 lakewood washington cops were killed inside a coffee shop starbucks would have more than word goo to say
For Mac’s Old Lady, And Any Pups Never Heard Tim Buckley Back In His Time
This is SUCH a love song . . .
i like to think of it as both
Yea. Of course I know the open carry people’s response. “If *I* had been there…”
i like to remind those folk that the 4 cops were in full uniform and armed.
Like the coffee shop scene from Boogie Nights where everyone is shot dead
Why don’t you write a letter to the editors… very carefully phrased.
That’s gotta be the publicity they don’t want. Major media might not publish it, but indy papers might.
How much do you know about their organization and ownership? Are any of these franchise operations? Have you communicated with nat’l mgt? Folks in other parts of the country, e.g. big city east coasters might care more than folks in the south and west.
I would run, not walk, from any place folks were showing weapons.
One of the greatest torch singers ever (and Ella’s favorite) Surprise!
everyone in seattle is still real touchy about all the cop shootings recently — i bet spocko might find more of a receptive ear from one of the seattle tv news shows…. isn’t feb ratings month?
oh my…. not heard her in years
Wish I could find her old show music album from the early 60′s. My dad played it all the time and I’d like to find it for him, but it has disappeared.
I said, “Dad, Eydie Gorme?”
He said, “Michael, you’re going to come across many different things in your life, but there will be a few that give you chills, just because of the quality. Those are the ones you’ll always remember.” He was right.
I’m not sure I’ll agree with your or Ella, and damned I am for that . . .
But, Steve And Eydie Were Precious
A bit too pop and older for me, age wise, but my wife loves them to this day.
I like their work, I like her.
Torch? Eh, too many others methinks, of much grander scales.
i want to thank you.
i thought tonight’s song was special and ya’ll confirmed that for me by spending a goodly portion of the thread talking about the song and performer. we’ve always had an ‘off topic is the topic’ atmosphere here at late late nite and and i’m gobsmacked with gratitude that ya’ll liked this video so much that ya’ll talked about it and her so much.
time for me to head out — g’nite and thank you.
night Suz – be well
Ah, The Dad Thang.
I got a bit of that . . . pops was a voracious holder of vinyl from 20′s forward in his lifetime.
When he said check this out, I listened.
Often, as the 60′s and 70′s folk and rock scares kicked off, he pointed out jugband songs being redone by the likes of Jim Kweskin and other rock covers by Jeff Air, Dead and more . . . he’d bring out a 78 of FireHouse 5 + 5, Kid Ory or someone in the 30′s and 40′s doing them blues tunes rock bands and folkies were doing.
Wish our pops had met to swap and tawk music . . . *G*
night all – take care
Dang, I wasn’t done heapin thoughts and praise on her for this effort . .
Ah well, she’ll be back, soon . . . ;-)
And we’re lucky that way . . . *G*
they did a story about this on Friday.
Note in the video that the open carry guy suggested a boycott.
Starbucks is trying to appease these open carry people and in the process hope their customers won’t care.
They could have avoided this by establishing their own rules earlier. Why didn’t they?
thank you. BTW you’ll find oblique mention of the pregnancy that resulted in Jeff in the song.
My friend, I’d wager you mostly heard Eydie with Steve Lawrence, but if you ever heard her solo in the 60′s, you’d flip. Just like Ella did. *g*
Like I said, Timmy was a real wierd fuck, and a misogynist.
But the Stones and many other bands were also singing songs and hits that had bad shit in them for women’s.
And then, the wimmen’s came back!
That’s a whole nother musical precept and posit, that cuts thru music from the first days of recording.
The men, then the women . . . thru it all . . . back and fro . . . what a concept show or series to track it from the earliest transcriptions forward to now . . . . the ebb and flow of women sangers and artists, women bands, women LED bands, women influences . . . thru the history of recorded music.
I did a similar show once, long ago, from my vinyl of folk and jazz and rock, on a college radio station.
But a real history course of women’s place in music, over a few hundred years?
I’d watch that one . . . *G*
That would be very cool. There’d be a lot of singing going on. *g*
Spocko: here’s some corporate org data as of ’08
I’ve been trying to get throught to national management. I always try to think of the economic angle. The radical guns rights owners are very good at arguing their case and they have clout. When opposing them I try to thing”who are the allies and who are they afraid of”
my hunchis that starbucks is more afraid of their customers associating Starbucks as a gun friendly place than a potential boycott from a small fringe group. But the people they should get to support them are normal gun owners. They need to move the question off of 2nd amendment and into customers feelings.
Hoss, thruout the 60′s she had Steve as the piano player, as the producer for the most part, as the manager, and as the agent.
I think I heard her, when she sang with Stevie . . . at her best.
And no, I did NOT hear her a lot solo, aside from Stevie, but there isn’t much of her APART of Stevie!
So, I’ll defer to your posit, cuz YOU know your stuff, and I don’t have any info about her sanging without Stevie’s influences . . *G*
And bottom line? The Real Torches are far and few between, no?
Just a quick hit to say thanks for all the activism you have done and continue to do.
I’m not sure I’ve always said thanks, but here on LLN, while yer here, I thought I’d send that out.
There are almopst none!
BTW, Eydie’s idol was Sarah Vaughn.
Lord as much as I’ve loved good picking on acoustic and electric instruments in my lifetime, I truly value the voices, and have only recently tried to start sanging after my pops passed.
HE, in his earlier years, knew music and sang parts in a barber shop quartet.
Sadly, as us kids were born, we didn’t learn of this till we were in our mid teens.
Not sure if I had learned this as a younger kid, it would have made me any more interested in music, as the theory and LEARNING of it, always seemed too complicated.
Still, it’s served me in MY older years, to pursue music . . . and smile about it. *G*
Love Sarah Vaughn!
A hand full, or two over time since Billy Holiday . . .
Torches, that is . . .
Thanks! One of the pleasures of batteling wing nuts of every stripe is Meeting and leaning from nice people like you.
I work these strategies and tactics with your input. I also get get insight into what messages work.
Just today some suggested that I also talk to the landlords of the buildings that Starbucks is located on. I hadn’t thought about that angle.
I’m sick of right wing bullies pushing people around. Now they feel they have to do it showing off their gun like they are in a tv western.
I’m sure he’s smiling about that right now.
Sigh, most are gone . .
Nite Emerson, and any other Pups still barkin . .
Thanks all for the woofies and especially the music!!
Heh, that was nice of you to comment as such and thanks . . . and yeah . . . they’s up there I ‘spoze, in our hearts to spur us on . . . I wanna think that, at least . . . *G*
Ok, gotta go, always a treat to chat music and family with ya hoss . .
Thanks . . . we’ll do it again and I’ll look forward to it . . . bless ya . . .
Nite awl . . . . *poof*
Nite Larue and Spocko.
Thanks for the data. What was interesting was that no one would tell me the name of The insurance company who writes Starbucks liability policies.
“Dear starbucks insurance company. Are you aware that Starbucks has become the meeting place for the open carry gun movement (link link link) in light of this will you continue to cover Starbucks at the same rates?”
Nite! sweet dreams!
I’m pretty late this evening, having been working on a series of images I shot this afternoon.
Before leaving for the shoot, I spent several hours looking and listening to the various k.d.lang versions of the Cohen song, which struck me so deeply Friday night I am in another dimension yet. There is so much I want to say about it yet the only response I could make was with the camera.
Cohen’s “Hallelujah” is so amazingly different than Handel’s that it seems if ….well, I just cannot express it. It’s biblical (invoking Sampson and Delila and/or David and Bathsheba) it’s contemporary, it’s both depressing and stunningly soaring, yet transcendent in it’s simplicity.
I just had to go to the piano and find those chords of David. They really are as she sings of them in the first stanza, rising and falling through the sequence she names.
Music imitating itself. My heart is bursting.
I’ll leave with those thoughts in place.
In case you missed it, Huffpo had a recent article on the subject.
K.D. must have good circulation because bare feet on a stage floor is cold. I would have at least wore sandals, somebody go buy her a pair.
hey ohthehumanity — i thought i was the only one to notice she was barefoot onstage (laughing)
