A Valentine’s Day thought that came to me in an email:
Someone in the audience during a Q&A on “American Perspectives” on C-SPAN noted:
The Dred Scott decision declared people to be property, and the Citizens United decision declared property to be people.
Does this mean that if two corporations can merge then same-sex marriage is legal?
Irony is my favorite form of humor.
Happy Valentine’s Day to you all.
XOXO

Two corporations marry and produce a bunch of little corporations?
Small businesses?
The decision in “Citizen United” is deep into “Dred SCott” territory with its fundamental denial of HUMAN reality.
And, again, this decision was made to benefit the Economic Masters.
Thank you for putting the two together, Cynthia.
DW
I didn’t put them together, somebody on CSPAN did. unfortunately, I learned of it from an email and therefore don’t know who the clever person was, I would have given attribution otherwise.
If anybody knows who made this brilliant observation give that person credit here in the comment thread
If corporations be people, can they run for office?
If they win, can they sell the seat?
Oh supremes!
Does this mean that if two corporations can merge then same-sex marriage is legal?
Excellent point.
On another note corporations may as well be allowed to run for office as they will have bought and paid for the individual who does anyway.
If it doesn’t last . . . who gets the children, and who pays the alimony?
Both decisions take theory to an absurd result.
You guys are gonna have a lot of fun with this, aren’t you? the snark is already coming thick and heavy. :-)
I have this ancient memory of 9th grade social studies where it said in the book that ‘corporations are immortal’. Can someone explain to me the basis of the original court case giving corporations ‘person’ status because the last time I looked, ‘persons’ are NOT immortal. It seems to me a basic contradiction.
At exactly what point in the process do the corplets attain personhood?
Cynthia, Gong Xi Fa Cai. This is the year of the Tiger. Or in my household chúc mừng năm mới.
Well, Cynthia, marriages of convenience often tend to have repercussions, sometimes, as well as “issues”, and questions of consanquinity …
Especially if the … um … gene-pool is restricted.
Mutations, mutations, and who knows what?
Seriously.

At conception, as there is no birth. A corporation is not, then it is.
Corporations are amoebic life forms. Eating and reproduction are amoeba like.
Bankruptcy is death. Creditors like fungus on a corpose.
Probably immediately upon incorporation (closest thing to inception I reckon)
So marry AT&T. wait a couple of years, file for divorce and sue for half of the assets…
I taught a couple of semesters of corporations.
I used to start out by saying that corporations were “incorporeal beings”. And I would ask the student what they thought that meant.
Ghosts. Toothfairy. Banshee. Poltergeists. etc. etc. That was always a fun class.
But when does corporate life begin?
When still a nascent “concept” or when “baptised” as wholly legitimate?
How soon must a corporation be named?
What is going to happen when the world is filled with corporatiions?
They can live forever, ya know.
Will the world become over-crowded or will cannabalism become the norm?
DW
It already is.
Southern Pacific and Santa Clara County, in the dicta written by the clerk. Who should be doing a very long spell in a very warm place for that piece of crap.
Quite a tale, that, PJ.
Bmaz has promised to regale us with the story.
One hopes he will do so soon.
He will have a most attentive audience.
DW
cannablism is the main thing now.
The focus.
Privatization is a part of that. Extracting nutrient from the rest of the organism.. (… society… ) then things like “soylen green” etc.
Rats are too many, need corporate rat control,
Corporate abortion made legal and night after pill too.
But corporations can’t fuck each other, they only fuck real people. What a dilemma!!
If corporations are people too, then they are the worst, because they don’t have to have a consciousness.
At least not like most folks.
So lacking a consciousness is well on the way to being a sociopath.
Most of the features of humanity are in the development stages, with the new tech, but not the softer or kinder things that used to be conjured up in the definitions of.. “human.”
Don’t forget, it’s not just the ridiculous notion that corps are persons, but since they are deemed to be such by virtue of the 14th Amendment, originally passed to protect blacks, and later other “oppressed” groups, the Court has adopted the truly insane view that corps are like ‘oppressed persons.” Thus, the law is revealed not only to be an ass, but also an asshole.
Everybody should read this case, which explicitly says in the opinion that the 14th Amendment argument was NOT being considered.
And the clerk who wrote the misleading contrary headnote was a known railroad sympathizer and probable operative. Great basis for a legal rule that has shaped society more than any other I can think of.
I pledge allegiance,
to the Logos of the Fortune 500,
and to the Corporations for which they stand,
one Walmart,
under priced,
with values
in every isle
for all.
that is what taxpayers are for.
Oops,Correction

One Walmart,
Multinational,

How about this for a constitutional amendment:
Rights of citizenship are extended solely to biological humans and are conferred at birth or from the recognized federal naturalization process.
Two birds with one stone, perhaps?
You might want to include “,for furriners,” between “or” and “from.”
If corporations be people, why are they allowed to buy other corporate people?
Since slavery was abolished, isnt’ that unconstitutional?
Why, they even try to sell them at a profit or break them up and kill parts or all of the corporate person!!!
Isn’t that murder? Is corporacide any different than outright murder? Are partners allowed to do that to one another?
Why do I lose paragraph breaks when I edit? Anyone know?
