It’s almost Valentine’s Day, and apparently love is in the air in our nation’s capital. Unfortunately, though, any smell you might notice isn’t the odor of fresh flowers wafting over the recently fallen snow — instead, it’s the hideous congealing of conventional wisdom among Beltway pundits.
Yes, friends, though you might have prayed David Broder was alone in confessing his May-December infatuation with Sarah Palin’s “pitch-perfect populism,” Politico this morning broke the bad news, admitting on behalf of all “mainstream political reporters” that — and I quote — “We love Palin.”
Sure, Politico’s Pool Boy Jim VandeHei and Jonathan Martin play a little coy, claiming Palin’s lure is that “she knows how to exploit our weakness to guarantee herself exposure far out of proportion to her actual influence in Republican politics,” that’s merely squirming after falling into the trap. (Note: I tried to get a reading on my irony meter for Politico calling someone overhyped, but the needle hasn’t stopped spinning yet.)
Backing up Politico’s assertion are new columns by Marc Ambinder for CBS News and Joe Klein for Time making roughly the same argument — that although the writer sees through Palin’s calculated public persona, she’s got an uncanny sense of the pulse of mainstream (if conservative) Americans.
Curiously, this sort of respect rarely seems to be communicated on behalf of political figures who strike a chord with progressives — who instead are treated with derision as the Beltway pontificators strive to expose them as phonies (cf. Howard Dean). But then again, maybe both phenomena are simply evidence of the same point: Be very afraid when veterans of the Village punditocracy try to express their solidarity with “real Americans.”
Call it the Applebee’s salad bar fallacy.

Palin is a monster and these so called pundits are morons and boot lickers just like her. Broder is the worst of them because he should know better.
Palin will be the new American Idol Hope and Change Official 2012 candidate at this rate.
Palin running for the presidency is the only way Obama keeps his job.
Wouldn’t count on that.
I’m not certain Obama or anybody else can count on that.
We have three years of Democratic success ahead of us and the people may be in a foul mood, even if the corporations are happy as a pig with lipstick and blush, by the time election season rolls around …
Nope, I wouldn’t be sanguine atall.
No siree, rob …

Well said, Swopa. You can’t ridicule the media enough for this mindless fawning over someone the public long ago concluded is unqualified to be considered for anything serious.
So on Ed Show at this moment, O’Donnell has a Republican and a Dem advocated debated about whether she will run, rather than lamenting why we’re even asking the question.
GW Bush………twice……..whoda thunk it?
Jeb Bush 2012
Didn’t the public conclude GW Bush was unqualified, and even after a disastrous first term, won a second term?
So on Ed Show at this moment, O’Donnell has a Republican and a Dem advocated debated about whether she will run, rather than lamenting why we’re even asking the question.
Somebody needs to interrupt and say, “Why the fuck are we even talking about this shit? What are you people, fucking idiots?” Barring that, it’s going to continue, I’m afraid.
Petreaus 2012
didn’t win either the first or second election. f’ing cheated both times.
Slight O/T: Pierce is in fine form today.
Beautiful on the outside, ugly on the inside. A perfect metaphor for her party.
I’ve got to believe that her primary appeal for most of her fans is as a fantasy sex object. Most of them must be thinking, “Hey Sarah, show us your tits!”
No one could have predicted a lockstep parade behind Dean of the DC Press Corps David Broder, the most admired Washington political journalist for any Gen-X or BabyBoom careerist struggling to find footing in the New Media Age. When in doubt parrot the master. After all, one can always say to The Editor, “Broder thinks so too” and get off the hook for all manner of errors: Bush Bounce, Palin appeal, Muskie tears that weren’t.
Bush thrice?
(Well, ifn we count Obama as a “Bush” …)
Ta Duh …
The Bush Quartet.
A square’d deal for the haves and have-mores
And a screwed deal for the peasants …
(Too bad Obama Bush will only get one term but it will be perfect, an enemy of the good … But the other Bushes will welcome him into the fold, just as they did with Clinton … um … maybe we’re talking Quintet?)
You betcha! A neoliberal feast …

Palin is a MILF, a conservative sexual fantasy. We have seen this before. Ann Coulter anyone? If she were a dumpy, baldheaded man saying this garbage, she would be Rush Limbaugh. But we already have one of those, so another one would be redundant.
You beat me to this point. I owe you a drink.
As if the PTB won’t cheat to get Palin/Petraeus into the Oval Office. Or Palin/Cheney. Or Palin/Newtie.
It could happen. They’ve honed their cheating skills. They are actually better at it than they used to be. Plus, of course, the Louisiana diaspora: New Orleans African American voters spread across otherwise Red States, diluting their impact and making Louisiana a reliable red state.
i’m getting a little tired of reading postings like this. Read Broder and cite any quote from that article where he says he thinks Palin would make a swell President. It’s not there. All he says is that she has political skills that he believes places her at the front of the nut parade, and could be enough to get her elected President. Klein says about the same thing.
Anyone who was around when Reagan was starting his run for President knows these are not idle opinions. For those of you who aren’t old enough, do a little research into all the MSM articles reporting conventional wisdom that American’s aren’t ready for a movie star President, and the shock when that became a reality.
Broder has his faults, no doubt about it; but on this one, i believe he has a point. And with the political malpractice by the Democratic Leadership and the Obama brain surgeons, I can’t say I’m not worried.
This is really horrible. First of all, populism is legitimate, issue-oriented politics grounded on the true perception that the monied interests have too much power in government and are ripping people off. The pundits are united in hating that kind of politics.
The think that everyone outside the Village is an idiot. (It’s a clan thing, so for them PhDs from outside the Village are idiots too). Since Palin is an idiot, that makes the pundits feel good, first of all because she makes them feel smart, and second because she confirms their prejudices about the average American.
But the pundits lean right, and so does Palin — she’s a winger running errands for the monied interests. So they like her that wayy — “Sure, she’s a moron. But she’s OUR moron.”
Some of the actual Tea Party populists are getting wise to Palin. (“Pitch-perfect” my ass — Broder’s been brain dead for 20 years). Most of the Tea Party Populists are pretty nasty customers, but they can see that Palin is a total fake.
The thing about Palin is that she’s essentially the neighborhood queen bee that always shows up at the City council meetings shooting off her mouth about this thing or that with no facts, rational argument or policy suggestions; the typical reaction is to let these types mouth off, then move on.
This political animal usually gets weeded out early, never getting enough credit from the regional power brokers to back them in a move into some higher office because they are obviously such nuts.
In Palin’s case, however, we have McCain to thank for giving Palin a free ride around this natural vetting and weeding process, throwing her straight into the national spotlight like some smelly fish from the bottom of the sea, which has enough fascination to grab the attention of the nuts. Now we have to deal with it.
Many of the nuts may see she’s a fake, but what else do they have? What else do the Democrats have on offer that tempts them? Nothing. So far, they are trying to marginalize them by making fun of them (a real easy thing to do), but it’s dangerous when circumstances might conspire to change the game.
Obama’s biggest error, in my view, is that he rode into office on the populist wave, then abandoned it! Unbelievable! Somebody’s going to lead it, and Palin’s going for it. What are the Democrats going to do?
But was STILL the Prez. Doesn’t matter how.
Both Republicans and Democrats hate populism, but the Repulicans are less embarrassed about faking it, and the Democratic leadership spends a lot of time keeping the populist part of the Democratic rank and file under control.
Republican populists really are loony.
I was going to say: as far as I can tell, the teabaggers are just the same old crazified 27% that makes up the Republican base. They;re just getting antsy because the Republicans haven’t been coming through for them, and thye might have figured out that the Republican establishment thinks that they’re morons.
The scary thing about them is that the Democrats are pretty demoralized too, things aren’t going well and will probably get worse before they’ll get better, so there will be a big political vacuum and the teabagger crazies might end up filling it.
I think you are missing the point. Broder is all about how popular and populist Palin is without ever questioning the complete lack of substance there is to her. Indeed he implies the opposite:
This is validation not criticism or even analysis.
The Democratic party didn’t do such a good job of keeping the populists under control during the Reagan run. It was pathetic how many union members and “natural” Democratic voters turned out to vote for Reagan. Again, if you aren’t offering what these voters need, they go to where they can get it; and the Democrats got nothing on offer, not at least in terms that they understand. Thus, my argument that the Democrats really lack the political skills at this time to be a strong governing party; they just don’t do politics very well.
Obama never had any intention other than using that populist wave to get to the WH and dumping it once he was there. It wasn’t a mistake. It was strategy. I agree that populist anger in the country is up for grabs. My question is why aren’t progressives going for it. Screw the Democrats.
Anytime. Anywhere. ;)
Sarah Palin’s Nashville speech was the most significant oration of the 21st century.
See:
http://notionscapital.wordpress.com/2010/02/09/tennessee-tea-party-sarahs-sassy-speech/
Where does Broder ever say that Palin’s points on these issues are good, or make sense, or are what America needs, or anything at all in that vein? He doesn’t characterize her arguments at all. All he’s saying is that Palin’s pitch is being bought by the nuts. That’s it.
Now there may be other articles he’s written that do approve the substance of it from his perspective; I’m just not seeing it in this one. That’s all.
The main point he’s making, is one that I frankly think is a good one, and that Democrats need to address: Look! All these folks think Palin’s freaking great! A big chunk of them support her! The implication i draw is the question of whether America is ready for this, because it could happen, and it’s going to take more than sarcasm to deal with it. Democrats ignore it at their peril, and frankly, I’m stumped on why the Democrats don’t want to try to lead that parade.
By “keeping the populists under control” I meant “keeping them from having any influence on policy” or “keeping them from getting uppity”.
You’re right to worry. After two terms each of Reagan and Bush, who explicitly played the “I’m a dunce” card at every opportunity, and made it work for them, only a fool would assume the American public is above being fooled again.
It’s just the ludicrousness of the idea on its face that gets the reaction you object to. It’s kind of like being nibbled to death by ducks–you can’t believe it’s happening, and you keep giggling until they take you down.
Broder really had to show that Palin’s support was from more than the crazified 27% of hard-core Republicans. She’s not very popular. She gets a lot of media play, and her 27% are fired up and noisy.
There is a danger though, as I said: the vacuum. The Republcians aren’t doing that well, including Palin, but the Democrats are utterly failing to pick up the slack.
Totally agree. This was originally going to be the point of the post, but it kind of wandered off course when I was writing it…
I can’t disagree with the ludicrous angle. Look, this story has played out over and over again through history. Nothing’s happening here that the Greeks hadn’t figured out by somewhere around 400 BC. Despite, that it keeps happening. Why? Study the Democrats and you might get a good feel for the answer. Man’s nature to ignore what you feel you have no skill or power to do anything about, and hope it doesn’t seal your fate.
Well, when you’re talking about Dems, what we all know is that they won’t fight in a campaign. Whether they think it demeans them, or whatever, they just won’t fight. which is a big reason why it really sucks to have to rely on them to be our champions. Any ignorant, loudmouthed moron can beat any Dem, unless that Dem is a novelty item like Obama, because the Dem will never call them out for being an ignorant loudmouthed moron.
I’m with Hugh, above, when he says it should be the damn Dems that are corraling the populist sentiment in the country. And also I wonder why progressives aren’t doing it, rather than the Teabaggers.
Jeb and Petreaus would be a real problem to beat, with any Dem thrown up there, be it Obama or not.
Unless the Dem’s create 5-10 million jobs in the next 12 months, then the Dem’s could sweep huge.
If no jobs, dem’s lose their asses in ’10 and ’12 . . . but yeah, as long as Palin IS running, we have a modicum of hope to retain the WH . . .
Him and Jeb, to be greatly feared . . . it will mark the completion and final nail in the republic and usher in a fully facist era (not that we’re not in one now) fraught with global war issues on an ongoing basis, MUCH worse than now.
Thanks you, that would be correct and nice to see your letters again, how’s things . . .
There’s a lot to the fight stuff. The Democrats, at their best, are able to articulate good arguments based on fairness, man’s higher nature etc. and should keep doing that. But they also need to understand that there’s a fight on for the levers of power, and their grip right now is weak.
I think T Roosevelt had it about right “speak softly, but carry a big stick”. Although coined for the national security arena, it works at the national level. From historical reports, LB Johnson was one of the more skilled practitioners of this philosophy. Obama needs to bone up on that.
Your concern is duly noted . . . please let Mr. Sunstein know we heard your voice.
Kthkzby.
Who’s Mr. Sunstein? and what’s kthksby?
When the audience is coarse, good arguments based on fairness are the least effective weapons.
The Marquis of Queensbury loses to a good streetfighter every time.
The Rethugs know that, and the Dems don’t.
Can’t disagree. But right now I’m distracted by who Mr. Sunstein is, and what kthksby means. I’m kind of old, and not always up on the latest literary allusions.
Larue is mistaken in this case. Let me explain:
Cass Sunstein is a bit of a creepy adviser/best friend of Obama, who advocates that people should infiltrate blogs and move the conversation along towards whatever propaganda du jour is. read about it here:
http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/glenn_greenwald/2010/01/15/sunstein/index.html
Larue will catch up to your further comments and see you are not doin the Sunstein thing at all.
kthksby is “OK, thanks, bye bye.”
There is nothing in your comment that is not spot on.
Nicely worded. The populist masses are there for the taking . . . yet, crickets (other than for the 23% teabagged wing nutter fruit cakes).
Why?
Because it’s a class war, and the corporate owned government does NOT want to support the populists, in any way, shape, or form.
It’s a class war, baby, and it’s us against the entrenched facist structure.
It’s a FINE post Swopa, don’t let ANY moran tell ya different!! *G*
Man, that’s cold . . . outing me like that . . . :p
PEOPLE vs. BIG CORPORATIONS! That’s all you need to know. I can’t fathom why some find that so hard to see.
Mookie!
Thanks, I’m forever in your debt.
If you don’t read Glenn Greenwald regularly, I suggest you should. I think from what you’ve written in comments that you might appreciate Glenn a bunch.
Just because you don’t agree with me doesn’t mean you have reason to believe I’m a moron. Since when did you assume of the role of maintaining progressive orthodoxy?
Now, off to chinese food!
I do read him, and believe he is one of the true warriors of our age.
Ignore Palin, fix the Democrats.
Palin is like a doll made out of tar. Wrestling with it will leave you covered in gunk and looking rather foolish.
Anyway, the only way she’ll win is if the Democrats continue to commit political suicide. And if the Democrats do that, nothing is going to prevent a right wing nut from getting into office.
he didn’t call you a moron! i was there! i saw it!
I’m really tired of these kinds of comments. Is it too much to ask that we not assume every single person who disagrees with us is a paid political operative?
Spot on, razor. And Hugh, as well, a couple of posts down.
As far as Beltway pundits are concerned, isn’t it mostly (or exclusively) male commentators who are falling all over Palin? This is more proof of your theory.
Palin’s appeal to women is to those who 1) want to know her makeup secrets, 2) are prone to get misty-eyed over babies, especially those with Downs’ Syndrome, and 3) haven’t outgrown their Barbie Dolls.
Don’t underestimate the Democrats ability to take defeat out of victory’s mouth and don’t underestimate the right-wing propaganda machines faux news, Rush Limpball and Sean Hampster. Sarah Palin is clueless but she has a 27% favorability among some rabid supporters and no one should underestimate this woman considering Obama won the election and as recently as 2007 most people didn’t even know who he was.
Palin is to Politics as Paris Hilton is to Acting.
