That Harry Reid really runs a tight ship, doesn’t he?
Democratic Sen. Ben Nelson joined a bipartisan effort on Wednesday to block the administration from trying the Sept. 11th suspects in civilian courts.
Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) announced Monday evening that he will support a Republican-led filibuster over President Barack Obama’s nominee to serve on the National Labor Relations Board.
In trouble at home and looking even more silly after Scott Brown’s victory, Sen. Ben Nelson is now trying to claim that all along, he had planned to filibuster the health care bill before the final vote if the merged bill that came back from conference didn’t include the House’s more restrictive abortion language.
Forget Reid, where’s the White House? Where’s Nelson’s Senate colleagues? Where’s Rahmbo? Is everyone just scared of Nelson?
I can’t recall a Senate Republican who dared to screw with the Bush White House like this.

This guy is no Democrat
Will the real Democrats puleeze stand up … and I mean those in the White House as well !
“where’s the White House? Where’s Nelson’s Senate colleagues? Where’s Rahmbo? Is everyone just scared of Nelson?”
Golly gee willickers. They must just be scared.
What else could it possibly be?
IS ANYONE ALIVE AT THE WH????????
This getting way way beyond ridiculous.
Un friggin believable.
Seems to me that the main difference from Lieberman is that Nelson has a bigger schnozz.
I mean, if Obama doesn’t want the job, why not just make Nelson presnitwit???
Where are the freaking voters? And who’s primarying this jack of asses?
Hi Petro! Long ‘ol time.
This is why everyone is losing respect for President Obama. Hillary Clinton stated it during the campaign, “He’s not ready”.
If I were Obama I would have Nelson’s head on a pole by now. Along with Lincoln Landrieau and Liebermans
Yes, Petro, if Obama CARED, a friggin’ whit, he would call out such as Nelson.
But he won’t.
Therefore, he don’t (or doesn’t)… care at all.
BTW, Petro, are you missing any snow up there?
I got about three feet you’re welcome to, shoe enuff.
;~DW
Dear President Obama,
Having an “attack dog” is fine, but the one you have is biting your dinner guests and licking the hands of the burglars.
Time to get a new one.
And hair-piece simplex.
Hair Force One?
My attitude would be ,fuck with my agenda at your peril
“I can’t recall a Senate Republican who dared to screw with the Bush White House like this.”
While I don’t want lock-step uncritical unthinking sheep-like senators & reps who follow the party line exclusively (as most Republics do), this is just ridiculous.
WHY is Nelson called a “Democrat.” He’s gone beyond even being a DINO.
When does he run again & who can we get to primary him? A pox on his house. Between him & Lieberamn, I don’t know which is worse, except that Lieberman was at least forced to kinda/sorta change his party affiliation.
Brought to you by ever increasingly pathetic “Democratic” party, who certainly do not have their constituents’ needs in mind.
You all don’t get it, do you?
Nelson and Lieberman and Lincoln are not the subject of WH retribution, criticism or even a cold shoulder for one simple reason: they are carrying out the WH’s agenda. Strip away all the verbiage and look at the deeds – not the words. The WH is getting exactly what it wants through Nelson, Lieberman and Lincoln.
And come next year, once the Dems lose a few Senate seats, the conservaDems will routinely flip and work with the Republicans to give the Obama White House exactly the bipartisan results they want.
Nicely done.
lol!
He’s the Doctor of Rug.
The big storm dumped all of about 2 inches ,here in central Mass., cancelled a whole day of work for nothing
Not ready? Or just bought off?? Either way…. pathetic and excessively frustrating. Primary both BHO and Nelson. BAH
Perhaps Robert Preston in the “Music Man” as Harold Hill as seen in a fun house mirror.
If I had a little more trust in my heart I’d say that Nelson is doing this in spite of the White House.
Yes. Agree completely. Got it 100%. Loud & clear.
As I wrote the last time a Ben Nelson post was up, he is a Democrat. Look at Obama, all the Democrats in the Senate, almost all of the Democrats in the House, they all have more in common with Ben Nelson than with us.
Ben needs a haircut, a wiffle..
Democrats sure don’t act like Democrats , do they ? Right now I’m thinking it’s time for a new political party , one that actually represents the people , instead of their corporate masters.
The Palin Party is riding to the rescue … LOL.
God help us.
How long will it be until the remaining true believers stop identifying the Democratic Party brand with populism?
“Look at Obama, all the Democrats in the Senate, almost all of the Democrats in the House, they all have more in common with Ben Nelson than with us.”
This party has a cover charge I can’t afford.
Scary, man, scary.
Kucinich/Paul ’12
They want bipartisanship? Let’s shovel it down their throats.
in a way, yeah.
Won’t God be Sarah’s campaign manager? Or is it Todd? Probably one and the same in her eyes.
I recall an earlier charismatic, if lampooned-at-the-outset rabble-rouser, who led the world into unimaginable tragedy.
They act like a wing of the establishment, which is precisely what they are. You didn’t think that NFL teams actually fought off the field, did you? The players’ union above all!
And Obama claiming to be on the left? it is to laugh.
Yes, it is time for a new party system, and preferably with as many parties as possible so that it’s not so easy for the idle rich to take over the whole shop again. In the meantime, vote for anyone BUT the establishment. Even if your candidate doesn’t win, that’s not the point. The point is that the establishment LOSES.
I’m with you on that.
More like George Bush in drag. F’ing terrifying.
I actually think this is more or less correct.
I think Barack Obama has shown that he really is genuinely interested in “bipartisanship” more than in any of the things he claimed to be in favor of earlier (single-payer, then a public option) all of which he’s jettisoned without fanfare in order to get Republican or even Conservadem votes. And Lieberman, who’s in a shameless class of his own.
The problem of course (one among many) is that “bipartisanship” defined as giving half your consideration to a party that wants only to destroy you and will keep asking for more to meet that end, and meanwhile ignoring the 70% of the public for instance who were in favor of a public option– isn’t bipartisanship in any traditional sense at all.
In any case it’s short-changing (there’s a phrase!) those who voted for him, i.e. those who wanted a public health insurance option, who are the actual majority, not one pole in an imaginary binary system.
Oh, you mean…?
Nah, Palin makes him look competent by comparison. All the media consultants on Earth won’t change that. Her appeal will never be much broader than it is today.
Hey! I didn’t know W performed with the Wiggles!
I certainly hope you’re right.
Obama is so weak that no Democrat or Republican has any fear that there will be retribution. They know he won’t do anything to them so they are running the whole show. He’s not in charge of anything and the entire administration is too dumb to see that.
He must have been very important to have the Teletubbies as his honor guard.
Notice the sailor giving a left-hand salute.
and the Baby On Board sign on the aircraft…
LOL, yeah, I Photoshopped all that shit on there.
This dude has gotten some kind of serious quid quo pro from industry. Obviously he will lose re-election, no base support and Republicans hate anything with a (D) next to their names. I would say it’s principle but this guy is no political thinker, he’s a professional asshole. Dems need to wake up and cut the cord with this dude if they want to salvage anything come 2010. Going with the least common denominator, when that person is probably on the take, is a very good way to lose.
Obviously, he’s holding the Democrats hostage all because of this 60 vote magic. No one senator should have the power to do that when 60 is certainly not a majority.
Ben Nelson is a terrorist! Ben, Lieberman, Landrieu, Lincoln all belong to the terrorist party.
Obama’s Life Lessons (at least what he learned from them) are leading to a disastrous presidency. The Nelsons and Baucus’ are simply taking advantage of Obama’s inability, his failure, to lead.
What Obama is doing now is the equivalent of Pres. Lincoln extending his hand to the Confederacy, seeking a compromise, in which both sides will “compromise”. It’s like Lincoln saying the Confederacy has some good ideas, and that the Union should incorporate those good ideas.
Can one imagine IF Lincoln had been that waffling, what kind of America we would be living in today?
I fear what America will be like after this Jesus Christ wanna-be is done with his four years in office.
Birthday cards at Xmas, Shadow.
Never fear … Palin, or someone very like her, will be enthroned next.
Then we shall have to exercise a modicum of discretion …
While Obama pays us no attention, his successor certainly will.
It won’t be pleasant, so let’s regard this time we have as “practice” for what we have to “look forward” to.
DW
He is a darling of the New Democrat Coalition, along with Rahm, Baucus, Lincoln and cool-hand Conrad, the Medicare chopper.
No one fears Hapless Harry Reid either. I guess he is still Leader because he leads the way his Party wants him to. You really have to wonder about the Democratic Party.
Isn’t Illinois Senator Dick Durbin supposed to be the Senate “Whip” in charge of herding the cats and lining up votes? All Durbin knows how to do is apologize to Republicans for anything thruthful that he has the temerity to vocalize. Durbin would absolutely shit himself if he even heard the crack of his own whip.
A hundred times, yes! This is exactly what needs to be heard more.
Like I said, he’s on my calendar for a card.
I think our downward spiral in unstoppable, as well as inevitable.
Whether the next presidential stooge is Palin, or some other telegenic but totally unqualified and inappropriate for the office dummy matters only in the degree of splatter when our once great nation finally smacks into reality.
Can we really be certain that Nelson (or the other conservative Democrats) is thwarting Obama’s agenda? If his agenda is to give lip service to the left while enabling the worst policies of the far right, then I see conservative Democrats as helping to fulfill Obama’s agenda. This would be why they suffer no bad consequences for their actions.
Patterns of splatter, Shadow.
Like a bug on the windscreen, America won’t have the guts to do it (democracy) again.
(And we never got very far down that road, anyhoo …)
DW
On one level anymore, it matters little whether it’s BHO, or frat-rat silver-spoon legacy W, or white trash grifter Palin “elected” as POTUS.
Whether smart like BHO, dumb but entitled like W, or mega-christianist like Palin, they are all marionettes, and the powers-that-be squat behind them and pull the puppet strings. This was already quite evident with Clinton & esp W, but has become clear as day with BHO.
Although I would loath & detest dumb-as-a-rock Palin being our alleged “POTUS,” I am ever-more inclining to thinking that it really won’t matter anyway. Neither W, or BHO or Palin really is in charge. Witness Palin’s recent “speech” in TN. Despite the “hand job” stuff, it was clear that someone nefarious had ginned her up to start squawking about war with Iran… sent chills up & down my spine because I knew it wasn’t dope Palin saying that.
So really we are stuck anymore with a figurehead POTUS. Republic voters LOVE to have really, really dumb people represent them (go figure), I guess because they seem more “sympathetic” or something. DFH liberals prefers us some book-learnin’ smart folks. But the end result is the same thing, no matter what.
Big Daddy WarBuck$ runs the show. The end.
The caption on the Nelson photo above should read:
“Hey there, Senator Joe. You got a real purty mouth…”
Jeebuz Xmas these people are awful…
Shorter answer: well, right. exactly.
I can’t believe you guys can’t see through this Kabuki dance with Nelson & Lincoln.
After his cornhusket kick back he is basically trying to recover his “conservative” no “whitehouse stooge” creds in his home state, same with Lincoln (who I hope loses in the primary). Essentially Reid and the white house is allowing both to go rogue where it won’t hurt them. Becker wasn’t going to get by the filibuster anyways and the trial in military commissions legislation will fail, but it allows Lincoln and Nelson and the other conservaDems to claim independence.
This is simple meaningless kabuki. You guys follow blow by blows too closely, take a Xanax and focus on votes that have real meaning.
What Nelson and Blanche is doing is marginal posturing on items the dems were not going to pass (assuming they want it to pass) or things that will fail anyways but gives these guys the ability to go back to their state and claim the bucked Obama. Its triangulation 2010.
He’s thwarting nothing:
This is all kabuki.
Don’t fall for it.
Don’t be a sucker.
And the “show” must go on … and on … until …
You say “the end”, onitgoes, or you could say “fini!”
Until everything has been reduced to the lowest common denominator of hate and conscience-less greed.
Warbuck$!!!!
he leads the way his
Partycorporate masters wantshim to.Fixed it.
You got it. In fact, Karl Rove went out of his way to give the reality-based side of the blogosphere its first scalp, in the form of Trent Lott’s job as Senate Majority Leader, because Lott had been getting a wee bit too impudent, insisting on the Senate’s being independent from the White House and all that.
My fading memory banks suddenly spat forth Lil Orphan Annie and big daddy WarBuck$ and suddenly I remembered a whole buncha stuff from when I was kid. There was a TON of political commentary laced thru comics in my childhood, even including the wonderous Rocky & Bullwinkle (Boris & Natasha anyone?).
So now Big Daddy WarBuck$ has assumed the position of my favorite depiction of what’s really going on & on & on & on & on & on… etc ad nauseum. And yeah: one could also say: fini!
WarBuck$!!
GOOD GUYS ALWAYS FINISH LAST!!!
Progressives need to understand no one plays by the rules.
Thus this is the answer to the progressive problem.
Progressives candidates must learn how to act and talk like a conserverdem, and once they get to congress transform into a real progressives once they get to congress.
Remember GOOD GUYS finish last.
Barack Obama, Rahm, Ben Nelson, Blanche, Liberman, these Neo-Liberals have step on the dreams of progressives long enough.
Just throw away the titles of Dem and Rep, no one cares.
Somebody gave him the green light to do this, and told him he wouldn’t be slapped down.
We could use Walt Kelly … and Pogo, about now, as well, onitgoes.
DW
Ah, Pogo! Indeed. I guess that our court jesters, Jon Stewart, Steven Colbert and sometimes Bill Maher, play somewhat of a similar role.
Well, it was a bunch of rich white guys who got the ball rolling in starting this country. (Washington largest land-owner in colonies.) I guess they have reclaimed it. They were fearful of the proletariat, and so set-up a Senate as a House of Lords to to ultimately “do the right thing”. No, not that kind of right thing … the OTHER kind of right thing.
The idea that government is responsive to the voters who elect them has to be one of the most enduring frauds of the last 230 or so years.
What saps we have been.
There’s a lot of misplaced anger here. Neither Ben Nelson or Joe Lieberman owe their jobs to Obama and there is very little Obama can threaten them with to enforce his will. The blame here belongs with only two people – Harry Reid and Sen. Schumer, the DSCC head. It’s Reid’s fault because he won’t threaten Nelson or Lieberman’s committee assignments, as in “If you don’t support us on this, you will be moved to the Fisheries and Oceans Committee Ben, so you decide.” And it’s Schumer’s fault for actually using DSCC money to run ads in support of Nelson in NE after his disastrous Cornhusker Kickback fiasco with HCR. He should have been telling Ben “too bad, asshole, you should have supported us on this issue instead of making an ass out of yourself.”
So send your angry calls and letters to Sens, Reid and Schumer, not Obama. But it isn’t hard to see that Nelson, Bayh, Landrieu, Lincoln, and Lieberman would see Obama as a weak, ineffectual leader without the testicular fortitude to engage in political discipline.

I’m not a fan of Nelson. Or Lincoln. Or Landrieu. They all represent the worst of corruption with their participation in bribery.
However, I would like to point out that senators are supposed to represent their own specific State’s people and their wishes, concerns, etc., and not the people of the other 49 States or the DNC leadership. Keep in mind that Nebraska is a very conservative State (and thus the vast majority might be opposed to the current bill), so maybe the people warned Nelson to vote their wishes or they’ll throw him out. This would be no different than Gillibrand and Schumer defying the Dem leaders on another issue, and representing the wishes of New Yorkers, as an example.
That said, the filibuster is overused.
Would you agree that sometimes, the good of the nation takes precedence, or should take precedence, over more parochial concerns.
Does a national policy of torture, for example, benefit Nebraska?
Does an economic melt-down hold any interest for Michigan or New Hampshire?
And if a Senator heads a committee that affects these or other things, would you maintain that said Senator need not respond to anyone whose zip code does not fall in said Senator’s bailiwick?
Just asking, upstate …
DW
Everything I needed to know about politics I learned around Kidergarten age. The first memories I have about politics and politicians was hearing adults say politicians are a bunch of crooks and liars.
To my utter dismay, decades later, I have independently arrived at the same conclusion.
From where I sit, the Examined Life is tied even with the Unexamined Life … at least in so far as politics and politicians are concerned.
Then there is NO need for political Parties at all, if your premise was the operative one. Being a member of a political party entitles a politician to a percent cut in the graft and corruption and earmarks from the U.S. common wealth. Let us see Sen. Nelson plunder the American taxpayer as a member of the Whatchmacallit Party.
No, it’s the job of a senator to capture as much booty from the government for himself and the ruling elite in his state, NOT to enforce his/her states ideology on the rest of the forty-nine states. THAT IS UNDEMOCRATIC, if one dabbles in that occult.
You is on a roll, Shadow.
Philosophically, you’ve covered pollyticks most thoroughly, in your answers to to upstate @ 79, and your comment to me @78.
Go on with ya.
;~DW
I simply examine the bed-pans of politics and simply narrate what I see and smell.
The bed-pans I see inform me that we (the U.S.) have raised bribery and corruption to an artistic level in which one would find MichaelAngelo.
What has happened to the statues of limitation?
To the fine artifice of dissembling and dervish spinning?
Gleaning the entrails for a hint of sublimity or trailing the footprints of nuance has become a lost art, but you, Shadow, are a master of knowing.
And you possess a right sharp wit, which is most appreciated.
DW
Anybody thunk that maybe, just maybe, Nelson is pulling a Phil Gramm/Dick Shelby. And is Nelson’s middle name Dick?
Thank you for the gracious, but not fully deserved, notation. But is not the rapier of piercing wit most suited to lance the boils of hypocrisy, greed, and false pretensions?
When enlightened reason fails to persuade, it is time to work from the shadows.
“the rapier of piercing wit.” Yes, indeed. And also the point of a sharpened pitchfork.
Sharpened to a razor-like, highly efficient edge I assume.
Ah, there is the scent of revolution in the night air… the heart quickens with thoughts of justice and equality in the purloined kingdom.
But wait, that is Iran, not the United States, which I see in misty horizon.
Ah, those wacky Blue Cross Democrats…..
As for why Rahmbama does nothing? Has anyone considered that maybe Nelson, Lieberman, Bayh, and crew, are closer to the president’s true policies than Kucinich, Feingold, Sanders and other progressives?
Let me put it this way…had a progressive stirred the pot and done the same thing as Nelson, but touting progressive values as the cause, how many nano-seconds would it take before Emanuel began defaming that person?
This is the government Obama wants.
Case closed.
“Case closed”, postage affixed …
Now, leliorsen, to whom shall we send it?
[Doubtless, you know that many here agree with you, some are even thinking "post-Obama" ...(no pun intended).]
DW
If Ben Nelson is a sabotaging, back-stabbing reactionary who’s undermining everything Obama and Senate Democrats claim to want, there’s only one way to deal with him — reward him with a committee chairmanship!
From your fingertips to Obama’s ears …
(You gonna own up to putting this “out there” when it happens? Or are you going to let Rahm take all the credit?)
;~DW
Blue Texan, It’s worse than you wrote. Ben Nelson scrubbed a lot of stuff out of the bill before it went to conference in return for his vote, and then held it hostage again for the regressive anti-choice stuff even more restrictive than Stupaks.
http://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/2010/jan/10012603.html
I read this transcript after dinner, and now feel sick to my stomach.
Anyone who spends a part of their day negotiating would understand the power given the 60th senator was obvious.
The BEST way to get them to be honest is reconciliation. This doesn’t require eliminating filibuster, which would also be acceptable.
Yeah, It’s quite a transcript isn’t it?
I got the link from someone here, I don’t remember who tho..
Obviously what Ben Nelson gave away in that interview wasn’t meant for popular consumption, just anti-choice people.
