John Roecker’s new web show Svengali is a gender-bending parody of television detective shows, riffing on cliches and plunging headfirst into a cesspool of camp. Svengali is described by Roecker as possessing
epic bad taste proportions
This is not an exaggeration.
Writer/director/star Roecker–oh let’s call him an auteur a la John Waters with same sense of epater la bourgeoisie and “hey kids, let’s put on a show” optimism–plays the title character, a disgraced LAPD officer who must solve a grotesque and grisly murder in order to get his badge back.
But the case is fraught with danger, professionally and personally, as he reconnects with Daisy Chain, the hooker with a heart of gold who is at the center of the case, and at center of Det. Svengali’s personal torment. Rancid’s Tim Armstrong guest stars as criminal mastermind the Professor in the first webisode; Jane Weidlin appears in an upcoming episode, with more surprise guests each week.
Svengali is a romp that crystalizes Roecker’s body of work to date which skewers and distorts societal conventions, his aesthetic combining high, low brow and folk arts into a modern pastiche of transgressive and inspiring images and actions based on do-it-yourself sensibility. Svengali is puerile, witty, utterly lacking boundaries, with an underlying core of tenderness and hope, like Roecker himself.
In 1995 Roecker pried open his mind and put it on sale at You’ve Got Bad Taste, a Silver Lake shop trading on kitsch and cultural artifacts, ranging from vintage board games and action figures to John Wayne Gacy’s paintings, then staged a massive punk rock art and photo show at the prestigious Track 26 at Bergamot Station, giving credence and gravitas to Los Angeles punk, a style which had long been ignored and overlooked.
Punk rock is at the foundation of Roecker’s soul, his drive to create. It showed him–like so many of us–that we could be free and outside of conventions, that art could be a way of life and that living through creating dreams into reality is the key.
While running You’ve Got Bad Taste, Roecker was also making Live Freaky Die Freaky, a stop-action animation musical based on the Mason murders starring Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong in the lead role as Charlie “Hanson,” and Rancid’s Tim Armstrong (who also produced the flick through Hellcat Films, a new division of his record label) as the narrator. Travis Barker, Benji and Joel Madden from Good Charlotte, X’s John Doe, Asia Argento, Jane Wiedlin, and Kelly Osbourne all had roles in what is considered one of the most offensive, yet hilarious, movies ever made. Roecker told the LA Weekly
I wanted to push the envelope, and I wanted to go so far as to actually offend both the liberals and the right. I think I have succeeded.
Roecker also documented the making of Green Day’s American Idiot, creating the feature Heart Like a Hand Grenade an evocative, provocative masterpiece which premiered in 2009. And he directed the 2008 Here!Tv series Everything You Wanted to Know About Gay Porn Stars*but were afraid to ask.
Topics covered in these revealing interviews include the impact of drugs on the industry, the dangers behind unprotected sex, depression, and the stigmas and drawbacks one must cope with when starring in the gay porn industry. Despite these very serious topics, the show manages to show us the lighter sides of these hunky entertainers, some of whom have very interesting and uplifting stories to tell.
John Roecker can and does offend some sensibilities–gay and straight, left and right, punk and square–but he is a force in underground film and art that cannot be denied. He is controversial, informed, outrageous, insightful and inspiring. Roecker is a true artist, his medium is pop culture and the disruption of societal conceits, reveling in punk rock DIY, blending his love of film and high art with low brow culture, Romantic decadence and modern nihilism, then infusing them with a sense of hope and possibility as he manifests his visions.

About Firedoglake
Hello!
Svengali is NSFW and contains graphic sex and violence. And stuff your mom wouldn’t like. You must be over 18 to watch it.
Svengali and John Roecker’s body of work contains material lots of people find offensive–frank sex, poop jokes, drinking and driving, blasphemy, gay porn stars, the Manson murders as a musical, etc–-so if this is not your thing, please consider participating another night, or finding another section of FDL to discuss things more up your alley. On the other hand, John is truly an artist and his skill and ability to bring his visions to life are inspirational and uplifting.
Also, um, you better be over 18 or you’re gonna get grounded. You know who you are….
That being said, let’s try not to get too smutty either. That’s what Facebook private IMs are for. But not with me, kthnx.
Please refresh your browser ever minute or so to see new comments, questions and answers. To reply to specific comment, hit the reply button underneath it and then type away. Always after a comment or question hit “send comment.”
Please stay on topic and there will be a lot tonight–Svengali, pop culture, punk rock, living your dreams, shocking squares by being yourself, John’s life….
If you want to jump in about health care or anything else not about please find a post elsewhere on FDL to do so. Thank you.
Please–and I can’t believe I still have to say this, but–no ad hominen remarks. And please be respectful of our guests and of each other. And yeah, I tpye badly…
John! Thank you for joining us!
Hey John, what was your inspiration for Svengali?
I laughed sooo hard udirng Svengali..shock and awe. And what a tender love story. What inspired you to make this–out of everything you make?
Thanks for having me! So no talk on health care?
Hey John, how on earth do you keep getting better and better at shocking people? The latest episode of Svengali is the best yet.
I just wanted to have fun and grab a camera with my friends and shoot a series. I wanted instant art. There was nothing on tv that I wanted to watch so I made my own show.
And for those unfamilair wiht your history..where did you grow up and what brought you to making the movie you do?
I did not really do it to shock just my sense of humor. I guess I was dropped as a bay a lot. And yes it is a love story and when the story unfolds you will know what I mean. I made it personal on my own relationships.
Bad LSD trip?
You have a very non traditional sensibility…to say the least. And tell us about your “church”?
I grew up in the wonderful Valley- it was like a prison and so then I ventured to Hollywood and I knew that is what I wanted. Do make films..sounds corny but I love this city so much. I wish it was like it use to be but in my head I still see it crumbling- Hollywood sign in decay.
You’re gonna hate this question, but I feel people will ask it anyway, any news on Heart Like a Hand Grenade or They’re All Out Without You?
Oh LSD I thought we were not going to talk about health care. Yes LSD is a good way to expand yourself and not take things so seriously.
Dear John,
What were you trying to convey with the Shroud of Turin man pads? Also do you thing religions should be given any respect or reverence at all or is vehement mockery needed?
One thing that comes through in Svengali, and i all your film making is that you a very caring, loving person. With a wonderful and absurd sense of humor
How do you handle the fact that you’re a huge inspiration to people? Does it make you question their sense of moral qualities?
I have some really good news about that both these babies will be out this year. Yep you heard right. I am glad we waited now it makes sense. It will be a great closure on something very important. Odd that record was so personal and I recall the first time they played it and I had no idea what the reaction was going to be. I was very happy with the result
I like ot think that any religion that can’t laugh at itself is still a cult.
And it’s the shroud of turin, which hasn’t really been proven ot be really much more than a very hoax.
The Shroud of Turin was just a fuck you to my relgious upbringing..but if I go too hell because of that- I can always tell God it was a fake!
So now you won’t have to hear people constantly asking when those are going to be released, eh? What made you decide to be the star of Svengali?
I do care I am or try to be a nice guy. I just so want people to do art. All I want. Like I said pick up a camera, a pen or a guitar and do it. I never had anyone tell me I could direct or write ( hmm maybe there was a reason) so I just did it myself. And I would love for someone to say I did a movie or something because of me..wow that sounded a tad egotistic..oh well
Tell us about Heart Like a Hand Grenande, your Green Day doc…How di that come into being? I was blessed enough to see and was BLOWN AWAY, not just by how loud the volume was int he theatre, but also by your visual sense.
This year? oh god, that’s amazing!! I’m sure that it was worth waiting for!!
I did not want to act at first- I did the series for Mikey- he is a real star and I wanted to help him out. but he would not do it without me. I was going too write myself out of the series by the 2nd one and/or repalce me with some like they did in the old days. But I stayed in.
People who make thier dreams come true inspire others. We saw that with punk rock..and here in LA, the people who came out punk helped shaped the city–they are in entertainment business, media, journalism, filmmaking, music business and other gigs, they were empowered by the relaizatin that they COULD do something and break out of conventions
I think that everyone deep down loves someone who can keep things original, lively and non-PC. You’ve inspired me to do many a thing, and it’s nice when you have people believe in you. That is worth more than a thousand years in any school.
Mikey is great…he has a real vulnerability. What’s his story?
You’re such a sweet guy to do that for him! And look at the result, the show is GREAT!
You seem to have had some negative run-ins with scientologists, have you felt any impact from this on your personal life or your career?
when did you meet Tim Armstrong?
The Green Day film was a spur of the moment thing. During a conversation I had with Billie Joe I was begging him to film the recording. He said they tried before but it was impossible because the band got nervous etc. So I just told him to get a tripod and he said fuck it your filming it..I know you want to be the tripod John. And I think I got a good fly on the wall film. It was amazing to see a crowd of people inline at the Egyptian Theatre waiting to see that film. Very strange because I walked that street as a kid and dreamt that would happen.
I met Tim when Exene and I had a store together. He came by and we became friends. He is truly an amazing man and has done everything to help me out. Without him I would be nothing- and I mean that. He has been part of most of my projects and I have always wanted a relationship like that with another artist and I got it..and he is pretty to!
What do you think of all your fans? How they’re inspired by everything you do?
YOu are VERY good at manifesting your dreams, and helpin gothers manifest theirs.. I am so glad that Heart is coming out and hopefully you’ll come back and chat with us about it when it does.
Seeing it made me realize what an awesome filmmaker you are..the visuals, the homages etc.
How many episodes of Svengali do you have planner. ANd can I play a witch? LOL
No the cult people have not done anything bad to me. Except ruin my Wiki page and telling everyone I am a homo! Everyone was saying you will never work in this town again? Oh really first they don’t have that kind of power and second if they did own this town I would not want to have anything to do with it. Listen I don’t care on what people beleive or not..it is their choice. But others need to kno the truth of these cults..I find them dangerous. They have their rights let me have mine. And I did it with humor
I don’t have any fans..we are friends!I am more of a fan that my so called fans. Seriously amazing group of misfits! Lushies unite!
Could you tell us more about your store you ran with Exene back in the 90′s. How did you get it all started and what were your inspirations/reasons behind it?
Ah thanks Lisa We run though MArch with Svengali 3 nd a half hours of wonderfulness. Well that is if we don’t get cancelled mid season the comments are great but it is taken some time to take it’s wings. It is not like the Guild which is huge we are indie..but be nice if people saw it and did their own also. In fact I want to do a contest where people film their own scene from a Svengali episode.
John’s store, You’ve Got Bad Taste was a repository of the arcane, the absurb, the evil, the silly and the strange. He hosted some great events there and then went on to give back even more to the music that inspired him by staging a punk rock art show at a major gallery in Santa Monica. The attention it garnered helped get LA punk rock noticed as its own genre (and if you saw Saturday Night Live last week, there were plenty of reference to LA punk in the wedding band skit, inclduing using the name Cadena–Black Flag’s guitarist) and the music style of the band…
I would participate in that contest. Any plans for a second season of Svengali or anything of the likes?
That’s what Flip cameras are for!
I left Los Angeles for a couple of years because it was turning into this shit town. SO IF you ever want to appriecate your city move to San Francisco that will do the trick. SO I told Exene I am coming back and wanted to have a general store like the old days SO I went to Silverlake which was totally empty. All these empty store fronts and got a giant place for 700 bucks and went from there. we sold stuff from the 1920′s though the 1980′s had bands play on Sunday for free and had our windows smashed in a lot!
You will have to see how the last episode of Svengali ends to see if we are returning!
Do you ever get starstruck? I’m sure that by now the amount of artists and people you have worked with, you don’t get like that anymore. Is there anybody out there that you haven’t yet worked with, but you would love to? And why.
I love to flip..er I mean flip camera! I told the makers of the flip that I shot some of Svengali with the camera..they were not amused..so no endorsment deals yet..sigh
I am always star struck are you kidding. I am just a stalker with a camera and not a knife.
god am I missing any questions? Sorry if I am..
What works, or people have been the most seminal in the inspiration for your art?
Live freaky Die Freaky–the Manson Family puppet musical: I guess “why” is a good question, but being native like you, really Manson so changed the landscape here. I remember we moved right after, we’d bought a house in the hills and the first my stepdad did was get us a big dog. And I remember being home sick from school and seeing the ABC news local where they found a knife used int he murders…and the trial..Plus I later went ot Westlake School for Girls, just aroudn the corner for Cielo Dr and we’d ditch over there and stare at the gates…
Also one thing about Svengali when I did my last project a series on gay porn stars I was gutted for a long time because of one of the men I interviewed named Harlow Cuadra. He changed my life around. Knew life was short. If anyone wants to see my show about him here is the link..http://www.advocate.com/News/Daily_News/2009/03/03/Cuadra_Expected_to_Take_the_Stand/
I cannot stress enough how important it is to get support for him. The West Memphis 3 case all over again
YOu are doing great, John!
God there are so many! lately it is Charlie Chaplin. just an amazing artist. Punk rock mostly because it was fast and anyone could do it..it was truly an amazing thing to be in Los Angeles during that time. I once saw X at the whiskey a go go- they looked and sounded perfect and i was in front. I took my friend and made him step back and I said to him. Take a good look. Cos it aint gonna last. Sadly i was correct
Interviewing porn stars sounds like a dream job for many. Did you meet Harlow before the he was accused of the crime? And is there enough to launch an appeal?
If you could redo anything in your life, what would it be and why?
I did Live Freaky as not as a postive film about Manson but as a warning to people who dive into cults and misguided leaders. Like the quote from the movie says: Man is an amazing thing they cannot make a gnat but can make gods by the dozens. SO true. I feel without relgion we would be in an amazing state of being. That is why is started Lushotology. It works!
John, England wants you, and soon. Bring a jar of L.A glitter with you, then you won’t turn into titty dust. When was the last time you flew abroad? Do you think you could ever bring Svengali to different seas of Yonder?
Are you an atheist? A humanist? You do have some great religious art. YOu are an avid collector of both fine and pop culture stuff…
I met Harlow when he was already arrested and I worte to him and he trusted me. He shouldnt have but he did. There was no way he could of commited the crime. He as fucked from the get go a fag and a porn star in a little town. The appeal is set and boy are there amzing developments I would love to share with you all. I taped him for 7 months without first telling him I did so..just to see if he was telling me the truth ..i did’t want canned response to my answers. I told him I wanted to do the doc on him and he said do it. Everything I said was true. No way would I have done it without his consent. And I am glad I did it even though it was hard because he had a voice for the first time. Also the death threats I got were fun!
just wondering … what are your favorite punk rock records or records in general?
I want to go to England so badly you have no idea..If I could redo my life? I would of started sooner in my work. I was to scared and felt insecure about myself, So I beg you all please don’t do what I did.Don’t wait.
My punk taste go in the 1976 to 1982 area and then it died..and thank god it came back or I would not be able to tell everyone my war stories at ad nuaseum
I am a humanist who likes wine!
How did all the stars of Live Freaky react to the script?
what are your favorite movies?
So many creative people are these days finding it hard to get noticed. These days, I think people are scared to really get themselves out there or express their views in a way that would make people gasp. How would you suggest people get their talent noticed in the days we have ahead of us? I’m sure it’s a lot different now than what it used to be.
Holy cow!
they all loved it. But I am not sure they read the entire thing. Once they saw the puppets and what they were doing I was scared they would get angry but they go it. here is the thing about this- If you love what an artist does. You GET their work then chances are your going to like them. Because there is a connection. And it was amazing to see people I loved and admired loving the work I did. Very nice I can die a happy papi!
My fave movies Salo- the bad seed, faster pussy cat kill! Kill! Beyond the Valley of the Dolls..Wizard of Oz..god I am a fag..
What do you think of James Cameron? Genius or something else?
it is so much easier to do art then before because of the internet- pro tools and digi cameras so there really is no excuse. You got to do it for yourself mainly. to express your voice. Do not cave into what people tell you what they think you should do it will never work
I saw his penis once at a birthday party..now I know why he does such big things “cough” he has to make up for it..just kidding sorta..I loved Terminator does that count? He just seems a tad douche and I hope his ex wife wins for Hurt Locker
What do you think is the most pressing issue facing humanity, the hurdle that must be over come?
He’s kinda over rated in my opinion
just wondering … what are your favorite punk rock records or records in general?
Do you have any more upcoming projects in the pipeline?
I think the biggest hurdle is that we are not learning any lessons from the past. God Jim Jones was right! scary
I wrote a script which is about my realtionship with Harlow and it is the best thing I have done. It has all the elements I was going though- tears and laughter and I really want this to be done-I just need to find Lee Pace to play me! Serously I really do.
John my question for you is…..how big is Billie Joe’s cock?! No just kidding LOL my question is do you plan on putting Svengali on dvd when the first season of the series ends? I know its a little early to ask, but i think its fucking hysterical and awesome and should CUM on dvd one day!
What do you think of the internet in general? Good or bad?
I hope I am not getting graded at the end of this! My spelling is like a 5 year old-
It’s because hipsters have bad grammar! I’m too socially awkward to be one of those.
I think it is both good and bad like everything. It is also interesting to see how people can express themselves better online then they can do in person. But I love the how instant art of it all. Make a movie.a song or a picture and it is up in within moments..but then you get the negative comments which use to bother me but now I find them very funny
You may have been asked this many a time, but we love the story. How on earth did you get involved with a project like the Network? How did it all come about that they wanted to release a record?
Svengali will be on DVD as a bootleg- amazing outakes to say the least. It is funny looking back on it..we really did have a fun time doing it. It seems so long ago..
The Network was where Svengali began- before being a detecive he was asked by Mr. Armstrong to look after his band he signed. I seriously am in love with that band. Fun fact I ooked that show before asking them to do it!
Easy on the language. Thanks
haha I think she meant Rooster! Billie has a giant rooster at his farm!
Now of course we are all plotting our own episodes of svengali…
I meant the verb ;) But i am glad to learn he is an fowl lover.
That would be great my cast is also available for any spin offs! I knew they would leave me for better and great things!
They’re my 2nd favourite band ever. I mean, they seem like such a fun band to go see live, it’s just a shame they didn’t do more than a small handful of shows, because I’m sure with some mass hysteria they have surrounding them right now, it’d be more than welcome that they come back into the limelight. We need more bands that will never reveal their identity.. Svengali sure must be talented, to be a Dr, a detective and a manager. How on earth does he do it a the age of 25?
Lisa I hope Bob Forrest didn’t get more questions than me! I mean it!
Svengali is hooked up to a booze IV to keep himself pickled! Anyone want to come over and help me fold laundry?
You are beating him I think, but tying wiht Margaret Cho…
Do you have an opinion on the Foxboro Hot Tubs? IF given the chance would you work with them?
Damn you Cho! She was an ex Lushie!
I cant fold..
did you ever try to play an instrument ?
How does one leave the Lushie fold? 12 step?
The foxies already have their manager- I was not needed..”sniff” But I would love to do a battle of the bands my band the network vs them! Your going down Hot Tub!
We have 13 steps Lisa- we do everything better than the quitters. We embrace being toxic in a toxic world. It is the only way to survie!
The Ultimate battle of the bands would have to be Foxies Vs Network Vs Green Day. The question is, who would win?
No alas I was born without a musical talent- except I know great music when I hear it
The Network because they have more money and power behind them
Also Like to say fuck you to the Grammys for not putting Lux Interior in the memorial section
Ii second that emotion
Well doesn’t Warner own all 3 of them? But I must agree the Network would definitely win
What’s the most weirdest thing you’ve ever seen in L.A? I’m sure downtown has it’s oddballs.
Speaking of award shows John… how do you feel about them in general, good thing or complete waste of time?
!0 minutes more!
I love award shows because they are fake and I like to think they are real like reality tv shows! I am such a sucker for fantasy! I love how they thank god in their speeches and I love how god usually has horrible taste!
the oddest thing I see is when you see poop on a wall outside of buildings. Not sure why people ( homeless) poo standing up. If you notice the opening credits of Svengali I have a gun and run of the wall has poo on it. true story.
Did you watch any of the Super Bowl?
Also the reason I thanks all of you in the credits for Svengali is because you are the reason I did the show in the first place. With so many delays in my projects I wanted to give you something…now it is your turn!
No I was to busy watching my weekend show Svengali’s Video a go go! Playing the hippest and newest music out there! We got an exclusive video from The SMiths live in Paris and Vanit 6 doing an acoustic number!
In other words–make art and live your dreams!
please do! and don’t worry what the haters say- I don’t funny they spend all their time judging when they could be creating. It is their loss
If someone says they could do better than tell them to do it then.
and reach for the stars and the bottle!
As Ted Nugent once said “If you don’t piss off the assholes… you are one” Thank you John… you’ve given us all more than you’ll ever know =)
you know I will just be commenting all night right? a marathon of ramblings..
Oh Ted the true American who urinated on himself so he would not go to Vietnam..
Going to be a great year kids. hope you like the rest of Svengali and They’re all out wthout you and hlahg..seriously anyone know where I can find Lee Pace?
Well… he did have ONE good line in his life at least. We can only hope he pisses himself off at this point
I’m sure they’ll be great! HLAHG is now the thing I’m looking forward to the most this year, closely followed by the rest of Svengali and they’re all out without you! Thanks for being such an inspiration that I want to grab a camera right now and film something
Thnak you john! and Guests!
Thank you Lisa!
Thanks John! You’re amazing can’t wait to see the rest of Svengali !! <3
