About Firedoglake
Thanks for your hard work, Elliott;
looks like snack time for the superbowl is what my tv is on about.
While Chris Matthews is on about the pres’s testosterone.
and Sorkin and K. Parker are on about the big negative force is the left, those spontaneous teabaggers are not ever coming over to the side that actually represents them … okay, my phrasing there.
Duffy on about No Deals, and the pres. needs to hang the rightwingers with Party of No.
Tweety at least dealt with the leaders of the right extremism and shows a graph of how big Pres.O’s numbers are with Fox viewers.
Panel saying he ‘can’t work around them’. All about job numbers, and they won’t get up fast enough.
A
book plugfascinating discussion with John Yoo.More from Chris Matthews;
Tweety; why have attitudes changed on DADT since Clinton got beat up on it? Panelists all say generational,
Parker; we raised out kids not to be judgmental but is it a social issue or for military.
Tweety, disagree, it’s an Am’n issue.
Duffy, the kids just don’t really care.
Why doesn’t Obama ever talk about the poll numbers on the public option? Why don’t the dems?
I’m confused.
Because none really want it?
Truth. everyone wants single payer.
:)
When Obama was having his Q&A with the Repubs he made the statement that if someone showed him a way that is more financially sound and achieves his goal of covering more people etc. he would support it (he’s not an idealogue). I was screaming ‘single-payer’. That’s the answer, he didn’t support it.
If aspiring Villager Kevin Drum were a marriage counselor,
he would tell battered spouses to work harder on pleasing their batterers:
But this is just blogospheric trash talk on my part.
I can’t remember her name, but there was this doc, a pediatrician I think, on Bill Moyers this weekend who has been pushing for single payer. She’s gotten so frustrated of late that she’s taken to civil disobedience, albeit mild forms, and has been arrested a few times for it. We need more folks like her, and less like me who can’t even remember her name.
I believe whole heartedly in what she stands for, I’m just a putz and watch too much tv.
Dr. Margaret Flowers?
Yeppers and thank you. That was her :)
Good morning, pups. It’s Dowd, Friedman, Kristof and Rich today. In “A Scrubbed Toe in the Race” MoDo says that Harold Ford Jr., the transplant with the Tennessee driver’s license who was raised in Washington, D.C., professes that he loves, loves, loves, loves New York. The Moustache of Wisdom is in Sana, Yemen and sends us “A Postcard From Yemen.” He says Sana is not Kabul, and Yemen is not Afghanistan — not yet. Yeminis have the resources to save themselves, but they need to be mobilized by better governance. Mr. Kristof, in “The World Capital of Killing,” says that Congo has become the world capital of rape, torture and mutilation in ways that sear the survivors of a war that appears to have claimed more lives than the Holocaust. Mr. Rich suggests that we “Smoke the Bigots Out of the Closet,” and says after Adm. Mike Mullen called for gay men and lesbians to serve openly in the military, a curious silence befell the right.
Here they are.
The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are ready, and I’ve got French toast made from challah with a bit of cinnamon. Just in case any of you were losing sleep at night panicked at the prospect that someone was going to implant a chip in your body against your will, come on down to Georgia. The Georgia State Senate has passed a bill prohibiting forced microchip implants. Not that it’s a problem, mind you, but I guess it’s just something else to freak out over. You can’t make this stuff up… Have a great day. (Added on edit — to make it even more fun both sponsors of the microchip bill go by “Chip.” [rimshot]}
NPR covering the Sarah-Teaparty….quotes from the Speech “tearing into
Obama….hopey/changey”
You’re welcome. Obama’s phoniness is just grates on my nerves. Yeah, he really is just a man of the people, taking suggestions from the left and the right. What an obvious jerk.
NO elects Mitch Landrieu….1st white mayor in 32 years….since his father who had pushed for integration
Thanks, Marion, are you sure it’s chip implants Ga’ns are feared of? Maybe it’s brain implants they’re fighting. It would really change the electorate that sent them to the legislature.
I’m kinda getting weirded out. You know, I read stuff and listen to music that was popular when I was a teenager. That was 50 plus years ago. I expected it would be good nostalgia, not meaning much.
I was wrong. It’s damn apropos. That’s scary. This is stuff we should have dealt with long ago.
Obama. Yeah….you know, as far as I can tell he’s just a little right of Nixon.
As far as the people. They haven’t had a voice since Woody Guthrie. Well, there’s a lot of voices. Today….Al Franken. I like him. Rachel Madow, John Stewart….that’s about it.
You know…Al’s the only one that put the neo-cons over a barrel. He got them to vote in support of rapists. Now why can’t more of our so called progressive representatives do likewise?
Re GOP put over a barrel;
“House Democrats are going to force their Republican colleagues to vote on a resolution opposing the privatization of Social Security. The move shows Democrats are putting their full political muscle into painting the Republicans as enemies of Social Security and using the chief GOP budget writer Rep. Paul Ryan’s plan to cut benefits as evidence.”

it can’t be sunday — i don’t see president mccain appearing anywhere….
don’t chip me!
lol
Go Colts !
Geaux Saints. Also.
Got Dat Right!!! Beat me to it!!!
I’ve had the car radio tuned to an oldies station all week. Some of the old songs are just silly. Honey. Sugar, sugar. You are my candy girl. Beyuck.
But, I agree with you there are some good voices for the people, and I don’t think they’re all on tv either. There are some really good investigative journalists out there. We also have entertainers who are speaking out against bad policies and issues. Singers like Bono and Springsteen. People like all those who put on the Fundraising concert for Haiti. There are a lot more voices than Rachel for sure.
What happens if it backfires? I could see the Blue Dogs voting with the Republicans and actually forcing the privatization of SS and the abolition of Medicare. Congress really IS that screwed up.
Hi Hi. I made gumbo for my Superbowl Party. What are the hoosiers eating today?
Yep. I’m watching that very closely. That could be a turning point.
On a side note, just who is Rand Paul. Ron’s son who Palin endorsed. A Kentuckian. I’d say craker, but that word has a lot of racial, negative overtones.
Truth is all I would mean is someone who brewed his own bourbon (Jimmy cracked corn…etc). Well, that ain’t quite true…someone anti federal government….someone interested in making buku profits.
You know, as I think on it, crakers are mofo’s. Not just for racial reasons. They be mofo’s for social reasons too. They’re in it for themselves. They don’t give a hang about anyone else. That means you Sally May, working at the local diner because your husband can’t get work.
Well, Americans are strong. Americans are can do. Americans will work things out, even in this crisis we’re facing.
What our pols don’t get is, when we, the Americans figure out just how to get things going again, it may require leaving the pols behind. It might require us backing down from our foreign policy and attendant defense spending. It might require us to think first about what’s good for us.
That’s something we haven’t done in the past. We might have to quit being scared of some foreign bogeyman and actually care about how to take care of our fellow citizens.
Yeah, I know. We’re not ready for that. But, I think we will have to do that anyway. What a drag….we may have to give up nation building and endless war just to take care of our neighbors.
What horror.
(ok, anyone, someone, take this keyboard away from me)
Morning all. Thanks again Elliott for your work.
Seems like the only worthwhile thing on the tube this AM will be Fareed Zacharia. Good thing since I have to get ready for a party this afternoon.
No way– it’s called self-preservation. That’s why SS is known as the third rail of American politics. This is a sure fire winner for Dems.
(I know, I know– they’ll probably fuck it up.)
Let ‘em try….just let them try. That’s a fight I would welcome in a heart beat.
What are the hoosiers eating today?
I’m prolly the wrong guy to ask about any non-frozen food…. *G*
They don’t have the votes to get it out, and if they did the rightwingers would not vote for it, since their constituents (and elderly relatives) would get the axe, in time for the election.
Good morning.
Caturday for me today.
CNN Sunday Morning switcheroo, starting at 9 am ET:
one hour with Candy
one hour with Fareed
one hour with Howie
one hour with Candy
Will give this a try — Linkins et al can cover the rest
For the record, as a native Kentuckian, you might try to be a little less condescending in your stereotypes.
Rand Paul is an Opthamologist in Bowling Green. He may not be your political cup of tea but that doesn’t mean he’s an idiot.
Me. too. Ive got a Vet question. But I will likely be late. Cheers, Folks. Im out. B
Agreed.
hopefully, even the dissociative will see thru the same irresponsibility about their country that got us into this mess.
Since my daddy was a Hoosier but we are also Lifting Up New Orleans, we will be rooting for both teams today. You can have some of my gumbo if you’d like. The only frozen ingredient is the okra, though.
BTW, I was expecting wall-to-wall Sarah this morning, but she’s only on Faux. I guess that’s because she knew she would be expected to answer real questions on the other channels.
Seems like she even has trouble with the softballs;
http://thinkprogress.org/2010/02/06/palin-hand/
There is just so many crib notes she can write on her hand.
http://thinkprogress.org/2010/02/06/palin-hand/
you guys have to see THIS
palin is USING THE HAND for CRIB notes on her
“question and answer”.ask me what I tell you, I’ll answer what I CRIBBEDnow the best part;
sitting down it looks like she’s in a stripper skirt fondling her thigh, knee and calve, she CAN’T keep her hands OFF herself
uggg
imagine if the first lady or the hill performed like that on national tv
What are you drinking?
mindmeld
Mmmm…frozen okra…
Hey, you got crawdads in that?
mindmeld II – and appreciate your comment over at my post on provocative weakness yesterday. Fascinating, when you go back in their history, the war criminals were heading together into crime early on.
and I’m drinking coffee. really.
Frank Rich wrote an excellent op ed in the NYT yesterday, titled Smoke the Bigots Out of the Closet. It’s a nice summary and includes lines like McCain, the crazy man in Washington’s attic,.
uggg
ruth beat me to it but nobody noticed what else she was doing with her hand besides LOOKING at it
http://seminal.firedoglake.com/?p=28549&akst_action=share-this&oxdown_publish=true
Truth is, I think you’re the one reacting to stereotypes. Cracker, used in the old way that most Kentuckians would understand, doesn’t mean what you think it does.
All it means is someone who made his own alcohol. Crackers were anti federal government because the government wanted to hit them with taxes. That’s all it meant, back in the day.
Yeah, since then it came to mean good-ole boy networks, white racism and a bunch of other ills. But, historically, all a cracker was was someone making his own alcohol. Either for his own use or for sell.
If there is a stereotype involved, it’s on you. Me, I remember that “Jimmy cracked corn, and masser don’t care.” And yeah, there’s some racisim in that…but it were on masser and not on the fellow cracking.
but ruth, you didn’t notice what she did with “THE HAND” when she wasn’t admiring it for it’s intelect
Nope. My sister doesn’t do pork or shell fish and she’s coming to my party, so it’s basil turkey sausages and chicken for the meat. So, maybe it’s just faux gumbo. Or, gumbo-ish.
by the way, I see some of you here who helped me through the other day, I thank you and the family thanks you, they printed out the entire diary and each of your responses will now live with them
thank you
I’m shutting my eyes. ewwwww
Me, I’m doing baked pork loins with peaches and Grand Marnier. So Sis would hate my table….but I’m looking forward to it :D
Oh, Perris. When my daddy passed on, the FDL team was swell and I printed out the comments and read them over and over. It helped me a great deal.
What do all of the guests on all of the talk shows share in common? They all read each other’s stuff and think that’s all they need to know to understand “the news”.
The media industrial complex. The best minds money can buy.
I’m not getting into a p*ssing contest with you, but we don’t live in “the old way.”
Just as many other terms over the years have morphed into slurs and insults, so too has the term ‘cracker,’ no matter what it’s original use may have been.
Claiming “but I was using it in the old way” is only a dodge to deflect the insult.
Chicken works well and is completely authentic…never tried turkey sausage, but it’s the flavor which matters!
Crawdads are really “down home”, but a huge mess, so it’s no big loss.
If people start grinning while they’re eating it, it’s the real thing!
Sissy’s SO is Muslim and she honors his traditions and I honor hers. But, I’ll take a couple thimbles of that Grand Marnier for my coffee, please?
Yeah, you’re right. I can take some pride in knowing where the phrase came from…but it’s totally ignorant to deny what it means today.
I’m sorry. I was guilty of just showing off some arcane knowledge of mine. And I was wrong.
It’s wrong to ignore what words and phrases mean today no matter how much we may love language and it’s roots. I was/am very wrong. Again. I was wrong and I apologize.
I missed that. Link?
Gotta get going now, but just a note; redneck refers to a farmer’s sunburned neck because he’s out in the sun so much, but I wouldn’t try calling some one a redneck just to be friendly. I tho’t GeorgiaCracker was one word, really.
I was hoping that diary goes front page, that’s stuff that should get national attention
Thanks. That makes me feel better. A couple of the gals from the gym are coming over too. I’m sure we’ll have a blast. I just have to get some house cleaning done after church and before the game. I should probably be doing it now, but I love my morning FDL chats too much.
Thanks, I’d like more of us to know that background, but think the FP was full yesterday.
http://seminal.firedoglake.com/?p=28138
today at two we all meet to say so long ecahn, the comments are going to be read by the family, hearing from you will make it that much better for me when I need to revisit
Good person. Proud of ya.
there is today, tomorrow and the next, I would prefer the day and time slot that gets the most traffic on that one
Accepted. Thank you.
Eesh, they’ve got two conservatives on Washington Journal talking about deficit spending and Greta’s just tossing them softballs and not challenging their bullshit at all.
Thank you. I meant every word of what I wrote.
Luckily I’m used to feeling a fool. I will take this lesson and hopefully pass it on. It’s what many kind folks have done for me in the past.
Again, thank you for excepting my apology. It was truly meant.
Gave you some hugs. So sorry for your loss. Sounds like a great guy.
Oh, you people should watch Wanda Sykes take on the Superbowl ads controversy.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/02/07/wanda-sykes-takes-on-cbss_n_452473.html
Talk about a Great Voice! She’s a hoot.
Hugs from us too, and kitteh purrs.
Perris, even though I was as usual, dealing with my own…er…merde. Man, I didn’t know you had suffered such a loss. Nothing anyone can say could make it better or ease the pain. But it stands true, you have friends here, and we are with you.
Probably not quite on topic, but my daughter and son-in-law gave me season #! of West Wing for Christmas. I was a huge fan back in the day, and I’m nearly through the three double-sided DVDs. I am struck, over and over, by how this show that is now more than 10 years old still feels timely and fresh. They even had a panda bit in one episode.
They are debating gays in the military and DADT. They were dealing, by the end of the season, with a President who was too cautious and not taking firm stands on the issues because he wanted to be reelected. Admiral Fitzwallace, played by an African American, reminded people that when they integrated the military the same arguments about threatening morale and cohesiveness were made by the bigots.
Maybe all that means is that we haven’t come very far since 1999.
I couldn’t possibly expect people to know fenestrate, we all go through what I went through and I was a little selfish getting my family here to help me through
we are a family
how bout those saints?
Happy Gumbo!
I’ve got to get moving too. I’ve got pizza to make (yes, make, as in from scratch). Always better when I “roll my own”.
Ta for now, y’all! Easy on the drinkin’ and forget about drivin’ til you sleep it off!
(((perris)))
on the road to victory!
thanks again everyone, I didn’t want to derail the days worth of politics
I want to get sarah and her stripper skirt fondling herslef on national tv talked about on dish type of blogs
I can tell you it will mean alot to us here, I don’t think there’s ever been such a large sentimental favorite, their talent may just deliver
they’ve never had one and they long hard, they even cancelled official events and school
Morning Marion -and everyone-
Thanks for the French Toast, just what I needed this snowed-in morning.
*g* sorry guy, how about them colts.
No, we, none of us know. I could, heck we all could, drag out some horror stories. It don’t matter. The only story that matters is the one you’re going thru.
I haven’t talked with you much, but I’ve read a lot of what you think. It all makes me feel as if I know you. Yeah, I don’t…but that’s how I feel.
But, for better or worse, we….idiots like me, and true friends here you’ve made over the years, and everyone inbetween…all of us, we are here for you. You are not alone.
I’m truly sorry for your loss.
yeah what a waste of time, I got a kick out of the caller who griped they had the same answers to everything.
So happy today! Credit card was to run out this month, and they sent me my new microchipped super duper secure one!!! No catches at all…oh wait…what is that? My new interest rate is DOUBLE what it was you say? How can that be? I’ve never missed a payment, and am not maxxed out, and will you look at that? They’ve increased my credit line again!!!! Wowzers, whatever did I do to deserve all this attention! What exactly am I supposed to buy on my credit card that totals 10 grand?
I called to get my apr lowered, they did it with absolutely no questions, it seems all you have to do is ask
she was just trying to wipe off the cribbin’ evidence
Don’t look at me. I aint got no credit card. I’ve finally paid off my house, paid off my edu loans long ago, and don’t have a car. Those are the only three debts that are excusable.
Well….sorry, it was a lecture I heard back as a teenager that made me feel that way. Yeah, I understand that in this day and age you have to worry about your credit score to get a good job, or even rent an apartment…….
Man, I gotta think about that. That last paragraph… um, I don’t know, I’m just an old fart, but are you guys getting taken for a ride. I mean. You have to have a good credit score to get a good job. You have to have a good credit score to get a decent apartment to live. We won’t even think about what you need to buy a house.
I mean. Think about it. Who controls this. You? Or the Banks/Credit agencies? If you don’t do well, if you flub up at all, you are doomed to sub-standard housing, jobs, etcd? Seriously?
I’m old. I’m sure I don’t have a credit score. I own my house. I pay my bills. I don’t borrow a dime from anyone. (it’s tight, but I’ve lived with less in the past).
So, I must have a credit score of zero….or is 500 or some other silly number the new zero? But what I meant to say, if I wasn’t an old fart. If I was just a kid starting out. Going by what is obviously an out dated philosophy. And had a minimum, as in paid up and not owing anyone, credit score. Do you meant to tell me I couldn’t rent a good apartment? I might not get a good job? Are you so-n-so’s serious?
Yeah, I’m old, and I often don’t get it. But, seriously, I’m I nuts for thinking this is nuts?
Seriously?
That reminds me of a time many years ago, when I got my teenage daughter her own phone and she rang up a huge bill calling a boyfriend in a different area code. I pleaded with them to reduce the bill and they did. We also changed the plan to include the other area code. Sometimes companies will work with you.
mMmm homemade pizza
there ought to be a law against usury.
Would make interesting visual for Jon and Stephen, Rachel, Keith….
Maybe Andrea could talk about it as much as she talks about Sarah’s big mo. Hmmm, wonder if Andrea mentions the crib notes?
Spotlight time…. tweet it to the world… pull out all the stops. This is the same media that virtually ignored Netroots, and now they’re slavering over Sarah.
Roger Ailes and Rupert Murdoch are laughin’ at the media fools….
I was raised by a mother with a horror of debt. I pay my mortgage and car loan on time, and have one credit card that’s paid in full every month. (I find it more convenient than cash.) Oh, and 10% of my salary goes into my 401k. I must be some sort of a freak…!
Maybe, and maybe not. But that is not what bothers me. What bothers me is this….because you do everything “right” by our parents lights, do you have a good credit score. If you had to go looking for a job, would your credit score help you or hurt you. If you were looking for an apartment same thing.
You get what I mean. When I was growing up, a credit score, if there even was such a thing, had to do with borrowing money. Now it means do you get a good apartment, do you get a good job.
I’m sorry, but does anyone but an old fart like me see anything wrong with this picture?
Mornin’, Elliott, pups
My team?
The War Resisters League.
Industrial Workers of the World
American Friends Service Committee
American Civil Liberties Union
United for Peace and Justice
Well, three of those I know are pretty hip. I’ll have to check out the others. I’ll get back to you.
(like what I think matters)
h/t to boxturtle for the idea of putting parentheticales at the end of posts.
Actually, from what I have been told (not sure how true it is) but you have to have a credit score with regards to your auto and home insurance now! The worse your score, the more you pay. Un-friggin-believable. I don’t use the credit card alot. Actually, not much and when I do, I pay it off. Just thought it was odd that a customer that should be classified as a good one, is given this new interest rate for being a good customer. Wouldn’t want that.
Was thinking of doing that. But, honestly, why should a good customer have to ask to be treated like one? And STILL we bail out these banks? Wow.
winners all!
a charming quirk to be sure
I don’t really understand how they figure out credit ratings. I did find it weird, however, that my score went DOWN after I canceled some credit cards I wasn’t using, even though they had no balances. I’m sure that the credit reporting agencies have their fingers into all financial pies, and I had a good rating as an apartment renter, so it’s not all tied into home ownership. They knew all about how I paid my rent on time, and wasn’t behind on the utilities. But, as I said, I think they set it all up to be as confusing to us as possible. Which sucks.
It’s all tied together now Fenestrate, and it isn’t right. And yes, your credit score does affect you if you are looking to rent. It’s sad. The world has gone nuts over something manmade. Money. What’s it’s value? Nothing.
They keep track of you for the corporations and banks. No other reasons. It isn’t right at all. They always spout free market voodoo bs, but not with regards to their customers. I mean, in a free market, there wouldn’t be agencies set up to monitor potential customers. The best part, is if you want to find out your credit info, you have to pay. Oh they say it’s free, but they lie.
weird, used to be it was to your benefit NOT to have all that unused credit at your disposal. It’s all a freakin’ racket these days anyway. Small wonder the economy has gone to hell.
The credit card companies are nuts. At one point I had a credit card with a limit that was larger than my annual salary… Go figure THAT out, if you can! I had another one I could have charged my car on… It’s just flat out nuts.
Ouch. My house insurance agent is still giving me a good student driver’s rate. Think about that a while. It’s homeowner’s insurance, not car insurance. Worse, I haven’t been in school for coming on four decades.
Here’s the thing. It’s all words. There’s no regulation. None. That means if they put any word at all on your situation, that carries weight. They don’t have to prove it.
Man, that’s how the sub prime thingy happened. Do you get it?
Yeah, it can work for you…it can also work against you. And heaven help you if you ever have to claim/recover from your insurance.
But heck, that’s not what I’m talking about.
Guys. I know most of you are young. A lot of us aren’t. Darn it, ask us. You’re credit rating should not control your life. Don’t you get it? If your rating is all that important, then that means whoever sets that rate has control of your life. Is that what you want?
Dang it, dag nabit, fussawasit. Doesn’t anyone see what I see.
Please, I’m begging you. If you don’t see this scam how the heck do you think you’ll ever deal with health care? Come on. Get real.
My daughter was in high school, and only working less than 15 hours a week, when the banks sent her 3 cards, with a total credit limit of over 10 grand. For a high school kid!!! She wasn’t even 18 yet
I understand your frustration, but trust me, I’m not young. Was alive to see Kennedy go down. My parents NEVER used any type of credit, except to buy the family farm. Even for a car, they paid cash. Never had a brand new vehicle in my entire youth. The only reason I have a credit card, is for work. The entire system is rigged so that you are forced to join, or be left out. The day is coming fast, where oldschool will be gone. It is sad. Healthcare? Isn’t going to pass. What will be passed will be more corporate bailout. The US as a nation is plummeting to the bottom. Don’t think a rebound will be anything like people expect.
Oh well. I’m just a DFH. Worse, I’m one of the infantile left.
If’n you straights (sorry to the gay contingent, in this context straight means something else) ahem, as I was saying, if you straights don’t get it. If you don’t know you’re being had. And if, well, no if about it, if you’ve been told that you’re being had….then if you don’t want to do anything about it, it’s on your heads and don’t ask for any sympathy from me.
I’m in south west Ohio. There are folks here who get it. Yeah, they tend to be quakers and Mennonites and Amish types. But they’re here, and you guys aren’t. Even if you were, you don’t get it. You’re being sold a bill of goods.
Oh well…there’s none as dense as them who intends to be.
Rebound? Are you serious? It would take more than a rebound to help us. Man, there’s a paradine shift going on. And it’s not in the future. It’s already happened.
I’d be happy to shuffle off this mortal coil, but darn it, I want to know how this works out. Luckily, I’m old, so if it works out bad, it won’t be a big deal for me.
What are you young kids gonna do? Well, either you’ll come up with something, and real soon, or you’ll be serfs/slaves for life. It’s ok though. If your kids don’t get hip and rise up, then your grand kids will.
I’ll be gone, you’re kids won’t be here yet…it’s you who’s gonna suffer.
Have fun :O
